To keep the signal consistent. The side-chain is just triggering the compressor, so once you set it up at the right threshold, you want to keep the volume the same, hence pre-fader.
@DaCapo2010 Not the same resulting. EQ can be used to turn down a specific frequency range. Side-chaining is used to turn down the ENTIRE bass track briefly.

Hey is there a way to have this only affected by the kick and not the snare? I noticed in the clip that the snare was taking from the bass as well. Is this what the HF and LF knobs are for?
Joe, at around 5 mins and 6 seconds you said that the bass would be turned down fairly quickly, but with a slow attack...This statement seems kind of confusing.
He's asking why would you choose to make a slower attack since you would want to have the bass cut off right as the kick hits most likely. My answer is because you also want a bit of that hit of bass before you take it down via the side chain other wise it will sound super unnatural and not as punchy overall
But why don't you mute the copy of the kick drum? Cause you end up with 2 kicks. I think it would be worth mentioning that you can also automate the bypass on the sidechainned signal so that it doesn't do it on undesired beats.
nice tut but gosh, that bass track sounded like crap with that compression. It just sounds unnatural even with the entire mix going. I understand you're trying to get the best of both worlds. Louder kick with bass coming in just after but the whole point of bass/kick in most songs is that they BECOME one sound. You hear the click and deep oomph ALONG with the bass note. but nice tut! very clear and easy to understand. You could roll your own de-esser that way too. or just use multiband.
The narrator should have demonstrated the difference between threshold levels, compression levels, and release times to better demonstrate how useful this can be.
I dunno. So technical it diminishes any actual music being played. What's being worked with could have come from a computer and is certainly as sterile. In other words, all this technobabble comes off like a class in dissecting frogs. The importance, the living entity, has vacated the premises and what is left is this technical carcass.

You could still compress it, too. It's up to you.

awesome tutorials is there neway you could some instances where we/you would use the prefader sends and vice versa?
im assuming you want it pre fader due to the fact that its going to be used as a guid for the side chain im still not too sure

ok so i figured it out ....you set your send to pre fader because you dont want to lose your key input when you must or solo a track

Also, EQ is kind of permanent, but the sidechain just kicks in when the bass drum hits,

not a bad job but when that bass came back to full strength you could hear it pretty bad
