    Have been trying to figure out for over a year and a half on how to actually use sidechaining and have seen many videos on the subject but I never understood. I've actually adjusted the volume of individual notes on individual tracks to get a sort of side chaining effect. Very time consuming but thorough. You do what you have to, in music.
    Although I use Cubase I thoroughly understood what you were doing. Thank you Thank you Thank you. You're very good with your instructional explanation. I just need to find out how to assign my bass (or any other instrument) to a buss then applying the sidechain. Thanks again.

    To keep the signal consistent. The side-chain is just triggering the compressor, so once you set it up at the right threshold, you want to keep the volume the same, hence pre-fader.

    Man this is a great tutorial, also good to see an example of mixing good pumping rock. Cheers Joe!

    @DaCapo2010 Not the same resulting. EQ can be used to turn down a specific frequency range. Side-chaining is used to turn down the ENTIRE bass track briefly.

    Thanks Joe, I needed this!

    @joe0404 Hi Joe. Yeah, I misspoke. If you look at the actual attack parameter, you'll see that it's very fast. (I meant to say "low" instead of "slow.")

    You could still compress it, too. It's up to you.

    Very clear explanation, even for a newbie like me. :)

    awesome tutorials is there neway you could some instances where we/you would use the prefader sends and vice versa?

  • @espionagebeats

    im assuming you want it pre fader due to the fact that its going to be used as a guid for the side chain im still not too sure

    ok so i figured it out ....you set your send to pre fader because you dont want to lose your key input when you must or solo a track

  • @blakplanit
    @blakplanit 12 років тому

    Why would you want the pre fader signal as opposed to the main channel control or fader signal?

    Hey is there a way to have this only affected by the kick and not the snare? I noticed in the clip that the snare was taking from the bass as well. Is this what the HF and LF knobs are for?

    so the bass drum is only compressed through the side chain? No compression before hand right?

  • @joe0404
    @joe0404 14 років тому

    Joe, at around 5 mins and 6 seconds you said that the bass would be turned down fairly quickly, but with a slow attack...This statement seems kind of confusing.

    btw, can't you cut frequencies from the bass track with an EQ and get the same results?

    Also, EQ is kind of permanent, but the sidechain just kicks in when the bass drum hits,

    why a slow attack wouldnt it cut right at the kick w/ fast attack?

      Just asking a question, why do you use slow attack?

    • @philosoraptor6355
      @philosoraptor6355 7 років тому

      Because the compressor is affecting the bass not the kick, right?

    • @Gawdzillest
      @Gawdzillest 6 років тому +1

      He's asking why would you choose to make a slower attack since you would want to have the bass cut off right as the kick hits most likely. My answer is because you also want a bit of that hit of bass before you take it down via the side chain other wise it will sound super unnatural and not as punchy overall

  • @theworstexperience
    @theworstexperience 12 років тому

    But why don't you mute the copy of the kick drum? Cause you end up with 2 kicks. I think it would be worth mentioning that you can also automate the bypass on the sidechainned signal so that it doesn't do it on undesired beats.

  • @TruthSurge

    nice tut but gosh, that bass track sounded like crap with that compression. It just sounds unnatural even with the entire mix going. I understand you're trying to get the best of both worlds. Louder kick with bass coming in just after but the whole point of bass/kick in most songs is that they BECOME one sound. You hear the click and deep oomph ALONG with the bass note. but nice tut! very clear and easy to understand. You could roll your own de-esser that way too. or just use multiband.

    The narrator should have demonstrated the difference between threshold levels, compression levels, and release times to better demonstrate how useful this can be.

    nice vid, try and incude the whole mix window, your insert portion was blocked off. i need the whole picture. like whats were. its a mental thang.

    not a bad job but when that bass came back to full strength you could hear it pretty bad

    This could have been much better. Too much o'head on the drums to hear how well the technique works.

    I dunno. So technical it diminishes any actual music being played. What's being worked with could have come from a computer and is certainly as sterile. In other words, all this technobabble comes off like a class in dissecting frogs. The importance, the living entity, has vacated the premises and what is left is this technical carcass.
