    Congrats on the subs! Thanks for checking my timing chain last time I was in your shop Pierre. I didn’t even ask or even think of asking… good to have the peace of mind. Thanks

    This is great information for working on my 1981 W123 240d. I check my timing chain every year when I adjust the valve lash.

    swapping from a #14 head to a #17 head on my OM603 after it finally gave up the ghost after 340k miles, I checked chain stretch, and it was only 2 degrees, I was thoroughly impressed. But honestly not very surprised.

    Great content, just started getting chain slap on my 420sl. On investigation found 8 degrees of stretch and a febi tensioner. Had the confidence and knowledge to check thanks to videos like this.

    Mimicking rattling noise… on point 🤣
    Man I just got my water pump changed in my 2016 gti. I mentioned changing the timing chain cause I’m about to hit 80k miles and the guy didn’t change the chain. He’s a mechanic idk how he didn’t notice that rattling noise lol. It’s a family friend tho so I didn’t want to make a big deal.

    Timely reminder Pierre. While my 450SE runs very well, checking the chain will surely be high on my list of preventative maintenance in 2021. Merry Christmas!

    This is my number one concern right now, since the prior owner had commented that the car had troubles at idle right before the starter failed. Still trying to see if its starter in actuality since that monster relay near the wiper arm on the firewall was pulled loose of the mounting point. Don't even want to try and start the W126 till I've pulled the valve cover to check for slop in that chain and tensioner. I'll make an effort to find German parts since replacing it more often just means spending more cash in the long run anyways. Thank you.

    with my 85 500sec tribute i had done all this work, body kit, audio, wheels suspension etc and etc ....car ran great.....but in the three yrs i owned this car i didnt check the chain or guides
    took it in for an oil change and asked my mechanic to just have a peak....driver side guide had already broke and was wedged in there.....phew got so lucky....so we did the chain anguides etc....and decided to paint the valve covers for fun -- nautic blue

    Thank you Pierre for the advicing ! On a w203, m111.745 , kompressor, German factory assembly product, it is the one with double timing chain, with regular oil and oil filter changes every 5.000 kilometers, is it possible that it could last for 200.000? kilometers?

    Thanks Pierre, got a new timing chain and the plastic parts for the camshaft oiler tuber coming - my 5.6 117.968 has over 330K miles on it but I am not sure on how many times the timing chain and associated parts have been changed.
    When you say degrees, are you referring to degressivere of distributor? Could you please recommend which tools to get for this job? Many thanks for your videos! Peter

    Hi Pierre, Would please be able to comment on timing chain issues regarding W211 E200K 2007 ( A271 1.8 litre engine ) with 250,000 Kms on clock. Not making any strange noises but sometimes when driving into my garage the engine sort of flutters when at low revs as I approach and slow down. My drive-way has a steep hill then levels off - this is when I notice this sort fluttering of the engine like it momentarily looses power - but doesnt stall. Maybe if you can a video regarding the timing chain on this engine would be great . Love your videos which are so easy to understand. Cheerz Stuart from Australia.

    Hey Pierre. What about m115 4 cylinder gas timing chains ? Are there any warning signs for them ore are they robust enough that they don't need maintenance ? And can you make a video about adjusting and rebuilding stromberg constant depression carburettors specifically the 175 cdtu ?

    Are there any engines that don't seem to suffer this problem as much? M103? 104 perhaps?

    • @Izrealeu
      @Izrealeu 3 роки тому

      From my experience working for MB in the mid to late 90ties we did see some replacement on the M103 and M104 but this was at around 250 to 300K km's. We had a few of those and they were mostly running LPG, which in the Netherlands was economical at higher yearly km's. I have owned a OM104 in a 1992 C124 which was unfortunately totaled by a friend to whom I borrowed it when he was in bind, it at the time had well over 350K km's and I had done a service not long before with a chain inspection and it was well within spec. Obviously proper maintenance and allowing proper warm up before loading the engine are fundamental, but this is true not just for the chain and tensioner.

    Mercedes timing chains are a good reason to use full synthetic oil. Years of Full synthetic oil practically eliminates chain stretch in diesel Mercedes.

    I use to have an early W201 4 cyl petrol it had an single chain it broke unexpectly i had also an W638 with the om601970 engine and the gear wheel what was on the feul pump broke and the the chain jumped but fortunaly an om 601 602 603 engines are not interferring engines so no valves were broken.
    What is the best make for timing chains besides mercedes ??

    • @Izrealeu
      @Izrealeu 3 роки тому

      I guess you were lucky, as OM601to606 as well as practically any diesel as well as M102,3 and4 are interference engines. it may happen the hydraulic lifters helped to cushion but in general there is substantial damage.... I lucked out with one as well, a 25K km OM601 where the vacuum pump decided to give up and dropped shrapnel down the engine skipping the chain and destroying the guides.

      @@Izrealeu in my humble opinon if you se the top of the cylinders the are cut outs for the valves. i have german book for to rebuild the engine an that book states that this engine is an non interference engine

    • @Izrealeu
      @Izrealeu 3 роки тому

      @@peterjanvanbijnen226 Cylinder cut outs are not (necessarily) for non interference, they are (in most cases) for allowing longer valve opening/cam duration or overlap. I do not have my manuals here at the moment, but have been an MB tech for passenger cars in the Netherlands for quite some time. I stopped in 1998, but am pretty sure that all post 1980 MB engines up until 1998 when I stopped are interference engines. As it is not exactly clear which engine you are referring to specifically here as you mention 2 I will not say this is a definitive answer, perhaps you could make that more clear and I can check tomorrow when I am at my work shop but I am fairly confident all are interference engines.
