Hey Scotty, I bought a 2005 SLK 55 AMG back in January of 2018 for under $20K with 50K on the clock and I absolutely love it. I do most of my own work, replaced DRLs for under $100 and replaced brakes all around including rotors (Brembos in front) for under $900. This is not a vehicle a person that runs to the dealer for every issue should own nor is it a "daily driver" but it is an awesome vehicle bordering on "super car". Thank you for your honest assessment. I just recently bought a 2013 Fiat Abarth, yep I like unusual cars and I'm not afraid to work on them when needed.
Reliability on german cars depends on keeping on regular maintenance. I have a 2011 BMW 328i coupe that I bought used 4 years ago with 41k miles. Now it has 74k miles with ZERO issues since I bought it. I didn’t even change the battery and the brakes during that time. @@matt7iron every 4,000-max interval 8,000km it’s whole life. Average around 5-6. 5w40 with 229.5 spec is the way to go. 5w40 stays on the parts better than 0w40 and offers more protection on startups especially cold.
Those codes likely tripped after they disconnected their battery. A lot of those codes look like the same codes my mechanic found in my SLK230 when i had replaced the battery in my car. If the battery is disconnected for more than 10 seconds, with most Mercedes', when you turn them back on, before driving you must turn the wheel all the way left, all the way right, and back center before you move the car. Otherwise, it trips a bunch of codes.
Scotty, my friend you started the benz wrong. You do not have to hold it to start just twist the key and let go and it starts. It is an auto start key.
If the battery is weak or has been disconnected at some point, the undervoltage and circuit codes get stored in differnt modules. There is no actual probem in them if the battery and alternator are fine.
Just bought mine. Last week. 2007 E350 1 owner. $5k. I go to a shop here and pay half dealer cost for maintenance. Mercedes engines are bullet proof. Especially the old 5.0 liter SOHC V8. BULLET PROOF.
Being the owner of an SLK 230, you fix the main fault and a lotbof the other fault codes will disappear, they're just spin offs, so its not that dramatic...have fun !
I've owned 3 Mercedes in the last 20 years. Finest cars I've ever owned. I have a 98 c 230 with close to 300 thou. on it. It still runs smooth, paint is nice, and gas mileage is great. Simply amazing cars if you know how to take care of them.
@@Enest03 that's the best part about those because they can easily get to minimum 400k mileage. Most diesel Mercedes are quite good and it's common to see diesel E class taxis with a gazillion miles on them
Kam yeah I know and understand that but scotty might have an objection to diesel e.g it’s only needed if your towing stuff cross country or something like that
Like everything else nothing is perfect. With a luxury car you get performance and technology that others don't have. But in exchange it costs a lot to fix and service
This is exactly what I drive. Mine is an 06 and has just barely over 70k miles. Fuel pump went out, and that was fun. They arent cheap to fix. $1200 at the dealership. I did it myself for around $250.
I've just bought a 1993 W124 300E - the last of the Mercedes non computer cars. I've had 6 older Mercedes since 1978. I'm now 75 and I hope that I can keep this old girl going until I cannot drive any more.
Just as an observation from my knot-hole in the fence, it seems that several of the fault codes could be corroded or loose ground connections. Maybe it would be a good idea to clean and tighten ground connections after 8 or 10 years of use.
Drove one as a valet, it is so heavy duty and good feeling with the steering wheel pairing perfectly with the point of view at which you sit, the size and length of the front gives this a crazy heavy duty feel.
That's awesome how you sat on his hood with your keys hanging off your belt and whatever metal snaps are on the pockets of your pants, plus the embedded dirt and grit in the fabric from working in them rubbing the paint. Probably scratched it up real good. I'd fire a tech on the spot if I saw them do that.
i have a 2001 SLK 320 with a 6 speed manual as a summer car. It runs great and is a lot of fun. It has just over 60,000 miles. No big issues but routine maintenance, new struts on the hood and trunk and the auto dimming mirror was replaced with manual one. No endless money pit, just fun in the sun.
At 78K you may not get too many problems with MB or BMW but once they cross the thresh line of 100K and/or ten years then the problems start piling up.
My 2007 2 seater Toyota has a V8 that produces in excess of 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft torque, I purchased it used for $5k with 270,000 miles. This vehicle continues to amaze me as it nears 300,000 miles.
I have an identical 2006. I bought it 6 years ago with 36,000 miles on it; now has 52,000. Has never needed any work but oil changes. Rides like a truck with AMG suspension, but handles well for the weight.
Why is the cup holder up so high and actually in the line of vision? So I can show off a big gulp while wrecking due to a blind spot? Really stupid......
I have an SLK and that was obviously an afterthought for the American market... It is really dumb because if you used it, you would spill all over your sound system and controls. I don't use it.
Those are nice little cars. I've seen a few of those around and I like how they look. Saw one once, black, gold wheel rims and while I'm not usually a fan of this kind of thing .. it had an under-lit carriage and it actually made it look really cool. I think in part because that's *all* he did. Just some nicer wheels and the light and done.
Howdy Scotty!!! I've got an '05 Merc SL500- similar car. I think it needs a battery. Mercs will test funny or not at all if your line voltage is low or unsteady. If the customer is willing, ask if you can put a new battery in it. Clear all the codes and put at LEAST 50-75 miles on it and scan again. Whatever comes back are most likely to be "real" codes. I lived through this when I bought mine about 3 and a half years ago; fortunately, it was just one battery [mine takes two!!]. Just my 2 cents! Great work, buddy.
Cars optioned to the gills with all the bells & whistles are fun when new. But they become costly to fix when it's out of warranty & starts breaking down. Glad I chose to get my '06 Mustang GT with the base trim.
Hi Scotty you mentioned in your video that the electronic odometer on this car was the actual mileage according to your scan tool. Is it possible for the electronic odometers to be altered? If so how difficult is it to do? I think on the car I have the odometer is not telling me what the real miles are on the car...
I've bit my tongue for awhile. For hoods that use dampers, do not rely on a prop. If you knock it and the hood slams shut, it is not designed to take that load and you risk cracking your head lamp or worse, breaking the headlamp seal and allowing water vapor to get in and ruin your headlamps when you least expect it.
Usually when you get low voltage errors or communication errors between the modules it means the battery was ran low at some point. Maybe the lights were left on or the battery failed and had to be replaced. So many people believe that when there is a problem, just disconnect the battery to clear the code, but in reality that's not what happens. It stores codes at a deeper level of CAN BUS. That cannot be read unless you have an expensive code scanner or the case of this vehicle a MB Star C5 or C6.
Boris Stojanović He’s always had the money to buy one, but he doesn’t want to waste money on trash either. The last thing a mechanic wants to do is fix his own car after spending the entire work week fixing other people’s cars. Kind of like how Janitors have messy homes.
All faults showing error of the same nature with low voltage... So battery, alternator, or one of the grounds not being so great? (Seems like the kind of thing if you find the root source, a whole bunch of faults could go away in one fix.)
Most cars of this age will have fault codes stored, it doesn't actually mean there are any faults that need fixing. They could have popped up due to low battery or some component has been disconnected e.g. when dismantling trim to install accessories etc. You need to clear the codes and then drive the car a few days and then put it back on the computer and see if any of the codes reappear.
A lot of these trouble codes are low voltage codes. I see this every day when customers either use cheap batteries or have a mercedes battery that's very old. Or if the car has needed to be jump started. The ESP codes are stored so that's no big deal, BUT when it's a current fault it can be a huge headache especially on this model
@@IKhanNot all the control modules in these cars requires a proper battery that is getting a proper charge off the alternator. Tightening a properly installed battery will not solve the issue. And cleaning the terminals to solve any engine trouble code is not going to fix anything. Any battery requires a test to show the battery is charging
Change the steering fluid and tighten up all steering hoses...because overtime the hoses get lose under the clamps from the expansion and contraction....i did that a lot and stops the whinging most of the time
This type of code mania probably occurred because someone jumped the car wrong. Most of the newer mercedes will do that if you only jump the main engine battery. Using the factory jump points are important. That's why all the codes are stored codes, not active ones.
All those “Stored” error codes appear consistent with a bad battery potentially supplying inconsistent voltages. Same thing happened to my ML55 AMG. Was never anything wrong with the electronics.
The previous generation is even better, look for an SLK 32 AMG. I have a stock slk 320 and love it. The 320 does 0-60 in about 6.3 seconds on a good day.
slk 320 as an NA e55 Amg owner I have to say the slk32 is no joke that car is a Little Rocket!!! With pulley and tune it’s at over 400hp and nothing beats the supercharger whine that it packs. I’ve never seen one in person unfortunately but I’ve seen a few c32 amgs which have the same engine and those can leave a lot of modern cars in the dust till this day 👍🏻
Mercs store codes for like ever unless they are cleared off, those low voltage codes are because the battery has gone flat at some time in the past. Best to wipe all the codes, use the car for a bit, then re-read the codes for fresh faults.
Im about fed up with BMWs myself, been tracking coolant leaks on my grandfathers 1991 BMW 318IS since he bought it laat year. I replaced all the hoses (which requires pulling upper and lower intakes) then it was still leaking, tightened hose clamps even more then it popped the radiator. Turns out this whole time it had the wrong radiator cap 200kpa/30psi instead of 140kpa/20psi. New radiator, new radiator cap and it quit leaking, BUT after a hard teat run the plastic water pump impeller blew up. After I put a new water pump in with a cast iron impeller hopefully that'll be the last work for a while.
If Scotty knew anything about anything he would know that the stored codes are from a dead battery some time ago. Damn why would anyone listen to this dude?

Had as in past tense? Why did you sell them?
I drove one of those and I gotta say it feels amazing. Fast, low, and good looking little beast car.
From what I see on those codes most of them were caused by a bad battery, I used to work for Mercedes, a sensitive car about voltage

Actually it’s the most reliable car I ever owned including my 2007 Toyota Avalon which I bought new
I find it funny with these guys.. I bought a bmw with 41k and it's got 74k super reliable... that is super low miles for a car no car should have problems till like 100-120k+ it just sounds stupid own it for 4 more years check back in

You usually get these codes if the battery has been disconnected but I'm sure once you clear the codes they shouldn't come back on
True, a lot of them are just stored codes over 12 years which can be cleared

Those codes likely tripped after they disconnected their battery. A lot of those codes look like the same codes my mechanic found in my SLK230 when i had replaced the battery in my car. If the battery is disconnected for more than 10 seconds, with most Mercedes', when you turn them back on, before driving you must turn the wheel all the way left, all the way right, and back center before you move the car. Otherwise, it trips a bunch of codes.
Scotty, my friend you started the benz wrong. You do not have to hold it to start just twist the key and let go and it starts. It is an auto start key.
My '13 chevy used to do that, our '19 Kia doesn't do it, caught me a bit off guard when I got on it.
If the battery is weak or has been disconnected at some point, the undervoltage and circuit codes get stored in differnt modules. There is no actual probem in them if the battery and alternator are fine.

Just as an observation from my knot-hole in the fence, it seems that several of the fault codes could be corroded or loose ground connections. Maybe it would be a good idea to clean and tighten ground connections after 8 or 10 years of use.

Thanks Scotty I was waiting for that video too. I'm planning in buying one of those bebys. Now I'm going for it thanks.

Sick I'm excited that Scotty found a good MB it gove me hope
Usually when you get low voltage errors or communication errors between the modules it means the battery was ran low at some point. Maybe the lights were left on or the battery failed and had to be replaced. So many people believe that when there is a problem, just disconnect the battery to clear the code, but in reality that's not what happens. It stores codes at a deeper level of CAN BUS. That cannot be read unless you have an expensive code scanner or the case of this vehicle a MB Star C5 or C6.
I like the official Mercedes hood strut !!! 😅

Yeah a battery change along with cleaning and tightening of the battery leads usually helps with a lot of those errors.

This type of code mania probably occurred because someone jumped the car wrong. Most of the newer mercedes will do that if you only jump the main engine battery. Using the factory jump points are important. That's why all the codes are stored codes, not active ones.
