I am now doing my prerequisites to become a dental hygienist. I’m really excited about the career, but due to having chronic depression in my teenage years, I could not perform self care tasks like brushing my teeth. I now have periodontitis. I feel like no one will want to hire me because they will think I either don’t know how to take care of teeth, or that I will be a bad image for their business. I feel very ashamed for it.

My end goal is to become a RDH ❤ I'm researching and learning as much as possible to make it there! I'm in dental assisting school (graduate in October) and plan to go to Carrington college after a year in the field. They require you to have dental experience!! They also teach all your pre rec's there so no need to get them done first! I'm so excited to move on in a career Im actually excited about. I watch all your videos because they give me such a heads up into the field!!!

thank you so much!!! and not unless the RDH took all of the prerequisite courses for the intended dental school (which involves taking more classes than the required classes in dental hygiene school) ...plus the DAT (dental admissions test). So, it is possible if you prepare ahead of time to do it by taking the extra classes (and most dental schools also require a bachelors) and preparing for the DAT ...but it won't be possible if the RDH doesn't take the extra courses, get a bachelors, and prepare for the entrance exam. Hope this helps!

I'm taking my last two prerequisite classes this fall and i should be graduating by 2021. Long overdo. I'm just ready to have my career and do a job that i love and not just work for money. Dead end jobs are the worst.
How many pre req classes would need to be taken before actually being able to get into dental hygiene school ? People online make it all sound too easy saying “it’s just an associates” and “it’s only 2 years to get a degree” which may be true but I don’t think they are accounting for all the ore reqs before you even get to that point. I'm in dental hygiene school now and you do not need to be a dental assistant first at all! DH school will teach you everything you need. At my school, plenty of the girls weren't assistants first and they are doing great!

You will do great! Mechanical tartar scraping is a super straight forward procedure. I plan to make a video all about fear and dental anxiety soon! GO FOR IT GIRLLL!! I am now getting a bachelor's degree in accounting and a minor in psychology, but once I get my bachelor's I will go to a dental hygiene program to become a RDH... It's totally worth it because if you get tired of one career you can switch :) It's better to have many options than just having one
yep! every school is different - some require you to take your prerequisites prior to applying to the DH program - but some (especially 4-year bachelors degrees) you can apply to right out of HS.

In Canada, Ontario they only look at your highschool level science classes as prerequisite.
