There was something similar in the Mandalorian episode where the townspeople and tusken raiders watch as the Krayt Dragon starts to wake up, really gives a cool effect of tension
Pootis Engage was made by Ceno0 for those who're wondering. He's a Ukrainian dealing with the war from what I know, and I hope him the best since his SFM is some of the best modern SFM animation.
The way Pootis Engage utilizes the frame is particularly fascinating because it's an evolution of what a bunch of folk have been doing in SFM for a while! At some point someone came up with a way to introduce cinematic frames, something SFM doesn't have any dedicated tools for, which was by using a physical model. Naturally folk realized the power of this and started playing with things moving in front of them, animating them, or interacting with them. Real rad to see the effect getting noticed more outside the community! (And Ceno is like, the APEX of the technique!)
Also it's actually a great media at just how many emotions and different faces there are. There's like a hundred different doodles and they all move, rather than jank around, like other animators do, and this is really cool.
I love how the house in the background of every video, even these filler ones, continuously evolves, and keeps damage or changes from previous videos. Like how literally 75% of the house is the absence of house thanks to the Need For Speed video. Very neat detail I feel is something you really need to give Noodle props for.
To explain the Life of Pi situation a bit further: that technique is known frame break, and was likely applied because of the film being shot in 3D (the effect looks more impressive in 3D). There were a number of other films that employed this technique, including the 3D version of G-Force, the IMAX 3D versions of GOTG Vol. 1 and 2, the 3D version of the 2016 Ghostbusters film, and the IMAX 3D versions of the first two Fantastic Beasts films (I believe Life of Pi was the only film to use this technique in the 2D version as well). EDIT: Some people in the replies seem to be misunderstanding my comment. I should point out that I’m talking about things popping out of the frame and into the letterbox bars, not the frame changing aspect ratios.
Glad someone mentioned this. Ghostbusters 2016's 3D version is like... Honestly one of the only films which benefits from being in 3D and that's bizarre because it's... Friggin' Ghostbusters 2016, a film which is otherwise pretty mediocre outside of the internet hatestorm it created.

Fun fact, in Mob Psycho 100 the Mogami arc is entirely presented in the film-esc black bars aspect ratio, the studio being as passionate as they are, they got special storyboards made specifically so everything was animated with said ratio in mind, they didn’t want to just crop it or do anything in post, they wanted to make sure every artistic decision was made with that intentional aspect ratio behind it.

For the whole duration of this video as noodle praised the creativity of those moviemakers i was thinking of how creative he is himself. Honestly it always cracks me up how creative he can be with his animation styles and the scenarios made for the paper cutout videos, always matching the super unique and interessting themes of the videos. I love the way he evolved his art over the years all the way back from the adaptive game sountracks video (where i first found his channel). Stellar work dude, love the videos, keep it up!
12:16 this is a BIG problem in GTA:SA remastered. EVERY SINGLE CLIP is zoomed out, meaning that you can see frozen characters models or props pop to life (like the food Big Smoke brings from thin air into the vehicle). Thankfully later versions fixed this but play the remastered on any early version and the cinematics will fuck you up CONSTANTLY
Straight up cheered when I heard Ceno's beauty start to play. I thought I grew out of anime TF2 shitposts long ago, but he puts such a ludicrous degree of effort and creativity into his work it's baffling. Certainly helps that it includes more comedy than just "lol random."
I want to take a moment to thank you for mentioning Wolfwalkers. The way that movie uses aspect ratios and panelling is a marvel. The scene where Robyn and Mebh have a tearful argument in the scullery while the aspect ratio just gets narrower and narrower and narrower until it gets claustrophobic is just the tightest shit in existence.
One of my favorite examples of using cropping bars effectively comes from the anime 86. Stuff happens in front of them, behind them, they interact with the scene, they're used to create a feeling of claustrophobia, and the list goes on. The show itself is a masterclass in cinematography, but how they use the bars (especially near the end of the second cour) makes it go from great to amazing.
Only noodle can just casually have Brenden from PST do an ad read for him, and CrackerMilk for a cutaway Collab and I'm not even done with the video. I'm scared to see who else is involved
Love how Noodle's canonically a little doodle boy on a piece of paper and popsicle stick, the size of an easily stealable credit card that you can use to get discounted ball shavers.
I think one of my favourite examples of clever storytelling use of aspect ratios has to be Everything Everywhere All At Once, where every single universe, without fail, has a very slightly different aspect ratio. I only noticed it after watching this video, but it is one of the coolest small details in that movie that makes it so gosh darn good.
I'm a bit late here for the party but I just want to say that the cardboard cutout videos' style is great. It still has your hilarious style of drawing, but also it distinguishes your video from all other drawn online ranting channel. If it's less work then I'm glad both viewer and creator is happy :)
3:40 it is really insane how talented, dedicated and cool the TF2 fandom is. I really wish my friends would care more about it, I love the game quite a bit and its community is just silly af, in the best way
My favorite use of live-action using aspect ratios to its advantage has to be the teaser trailer for the live-action Cowboy Bebop. It's so artsy and fun and weirdly a lot like pootis engage where they move around and use the borders as weapons, it's so unserious and if they kept the aesthetic for the actual show, it would almost make it almost watchable.
That representation of the age old dumpster fire that is people saying "no one cares what you think" followed by them very clearly showcasing how much they care. God, had me tearing up.
The white background and ambient music is a really good detail. It's actually crazy how you don't even have to think about it. Also a really good topic to hear you talk about, especially as someone who isn't really into things related to that by default
I HATE ! THEREFORE I AM ! Is the most relatable quote of the year. Facial expression included. Seriously, I love your cardboard cutting, they're actually super expressive, and it's a fantastic blend of "stopmo" (even though it's just moving cardobard figures, but at least, we got the real life environment) and "2D animation" ! Super fast, lazy, and efficient. The apex of great storytelling with great dia (mono)logues. Besides, thanks for making me discovering that little gem that Pootis Engage is. I had no idea such a treasure existed !
I love the scene from Mysterious Benedict Society where the screen splits into 4 scenes with different camera angles showing the different approaches of the children completing the challenges. Its ridiculously cool.
I'm so freaking happy you talked about Pootis Engage! I agree with you that it is one of the most creative use of framing I've ever seen. SFM animators are genuilney in a league of their own.
Noodle videos are the only time I DON'T skip video-sponsor segments. His sponsor segments are so funny and creative I can't help but watch them! I wish more channels took note from Noodle
Noodle is great at these! Other channels that I actually like their sponsorship stuff: "Some More News" does really good ad sponsors too--they're intentionally hackneyed, off-kilter and sarcastic. Also "Internet Comment Ettiquette", he does whole skits for his ads. Both are fairly sardonic and semi-political, in case you unironically use the word "lib-tard", but I like 'em.
I'm so glad you mentioned Scott pilgrim, it's such a great example of how they use aspect ratios and treating it like a comic panel to change the mood in a movie!
God damnit... Noodle is not my favorite content creator, but he is definitely one of the best that I've ever freaking seen. Always outstanding and outside of the box content, and a film level production which is cleverly hidden by the cardboard aesthetic. I'm talking to myself like: This whole sheez is as if Quentin Tarantino was a slightly family friendlier version of himself and was a UA-camr. Good for you man, good for you...
I really like the popsickle stick videos. theyre not as high quality but theyre weirdly more charming than the fully animated videos and feel more off the cuff like youre just speaking your mind and for someone like me with ADHD it just feels like i resonate with it more
oh I freaking love Pootis Engage and its sequel, Ceno put so much effort into it and you can tell. I have probably watched them more than a dozen times each and they're just as great every time.
I dont know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but there is an animated cutscene for Honkai Impact 3rd called Because Of You and it uses ratios in a really neat way. As the lead's eye gets corrupted, the ratio shrinks and when she regains it, she blasts the black bars away and it looks really good.
I really like how, even when doing production, you still put flair and an interesting directorial spin on the presentation, dialogue and vibes. ((: top tier

FINALLY someone talked about how creative Pootis Engage 1 and 2 is with it’s borders. That entire fight scene redefined animation for me. It’s so unbelievably well done.
It's kind of insane to think that there's a legit possibility in like 100 years film students are going to have to study a post-ironic shitpost SFM in order to get a grade for an animation credit.
15:04 that's actually really similar to sonic adventure dx on steam the steam version is a port of the xbox360/ps3 release which is a port of the 2004 pc version which is a port of the gamecube release which is a port of the dreamcast original that changed a lot of the graphics to be "better" btw each port got more and more bugs like how the little cameo of cream the rabbit showing up, has super glitchy fucked up textures on steam or the fact that when sonic is running full speed his shoes textures get fucked up and can even be seen on one of the screenshots on the store page
I like how when you mentioned forcing the artists, programmers and play testers to go back and correct animations, you used a furry to represent the programmers.
I'm dying over here. There's literally this one scene of chaos in the third act of _Penguins of Madagascar_ where they erect fake aspect boundaries that get encroached by multiple flying critters. _What is that same moment doing in Life of freaking Pi_

I can't express how much I appreciate an icecream stick cardboard style 😁🖤
Pootis engage is legitimately one of my favorite visual pieces of media right now because its so solidly put together and funny as hell.
Blur having a cancelled sequel still leaves a hole in my heart
Same this hurts.
I loved Blur ...
As someone who plays blur regularly this is pain
they just turned into Gorillaz
@@rosestrohm7986 Rumoured to reform next year
I want to take a moment to thank you for mentioning Wolfwalkers.
I love how much effort Noodle puts into his set designs
The Cracker Milk crossover at 6:55 came out of nowhere, like holy shit, I'd have never expected that !
Thank you for addressing the things I thought about in your last video
1. Artists are cool
2. Gamers are terrible
Keep playing those Greatest Hits ✊

12:30 proof that all programmers are furries, Noodle you madman I love it
I am so damn happy you brought up Pootis Engage. Some of the most creative SFM animation I've ever seen. That animator went all out and it's glorious.
Only noodle can just casually have Brenden from PST do an ad read for him, and CrackerMilk for a cutaway Collab and I'm not even done with the video. I'm scared to see who else is involved
I just got to the CrackerMilk cutaway and I thought the video was done
i mean, brendaniel also voiced the "unlimited ram" add so idk if he's really that exclusive lol
Love how Noodle's canonically a little doodle boy on a piece of paper and popsicle stick, the size of an easily stealable credit card that you can use to get discounted ball shavers.
I do miss his hand drawn version but gotta say that it's pretty funny this way too.
Oh.... I hope no one takes noodle saying "man up and become a groomer" at 6:10 out of context... ever...
Well... They did. And now Manscaped got free promo!
I love how the "programmers" puppet just is a furry. That's dedication to accuracy.
sfm artists on their way to make the most extremely amazing thing youve seen with a 17 year old tool based on a 20 year old engine
literally this. pootis engage extreme is god like
I'm a bit late here for the party but I just want to say that the cardboard cutout videos' style is great. It still has your hilarious style of drawing, but also it distinguishes your video from all other drawn online ranting channel. If it's less work then I'm glad both viewer and creator is happy :)
3:40 it is really insane how talented, dedicated and cool the TF2 fandom is. I really wish my friends would care more about it, I love the game quite a bit and its community is just silly af, in the best way
You gotta get new friends... I'm only half -joking rn
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI when is half-joking three then
+1000 For bringing up Pootis Engage. That is a great example of using aspect ratios. hell, you have a character literally USING the ratios!
I hope I'm not the only one who started jamming when they heard Ken Ashcorps music. God damn that guy needs more recognition.
Immediately added to my spootify when I heard that track.
I don't think I ever expected a CrackerMilk and Noodle crossover
this is so unreal
3:25
Ohhh so you've found the biggest masterpiece of our century
The white background and ambient music is a really good detail. It's actually crazy how you don't even have to think about it. Also a really good topic to hear you talk about, especially as someone who isn't really into things related to that by default
"I hate, therefore I am."

Damn where have I heard that before?
@Voidware nah
Bro thinks hes AM
5:28 I literally started crying with laughter
I'm so freaking happy you talked about Pootis Engage! I agree with you that it is one of the most creative use of framing I've ever seen.
SFM animators are genuilney in a league of their own.
Noodle videos are the only time I DON'T skip video-sponsor segments. His sponsor segments are so funny and creative I can't help but watch them! I wish more channels took note from Noodle
They're right up there with Internet Historian's ad bumpers.
I think Internet Comment Etiquette has historically had some of the best. They've been kinda hit or miss for about a year now though.
I really like the popsickle stick videos. theyre not as high quality but theyre weirdly more charming than the fully animated videos and feel more off the cuff like youre just speaking your mind and for someone like me with ADHD it just feels like i resonate with it more
i love how the set is slowly turning into a post apocalyptic world
also ratio
oh I freaking love Pootis Engage and its sequel, Ceno put so much effort into it and you can tell.
14:55 Sonic Adventure 🤝 Halo 1
having their most available releases being ports of remastered ports of ports of ports of games meant for other systems
I fucking hate the port too because it fucking made everything like 60 fps to fucking 40 fps and break the animations as well.
I really like how, even when doing production, you still put flair and an interesting directorial spin on the presentation, dialogue and vibes. ((: top tier
It doesn’t matter what Noodle is talking about or how, he always manages to entertain me deeply
A way out's framing was FREAKING SICK.
oh DUDE i was hyped UP when i heard absolute territory by ken ashcorp here and knew u were going to give the equivalent of a *tsunami of praise* for pootis engage, it's a literal work of art and cen0 deserves nothing but respect
10:22 this sequence hurt my brain
FINALLY someone talked about how creative Pootis Engage 1 and 2 is with it’s borders. That entire fight scene redefined animation for me. It’s so unbelievably well done.
It's kind of insane to think that there's a legit possibility in like 100 years film students are going to have to study a post-ironic shitpost SFM in order to get a grade for an animation credit.
that halo anniversary segment was such a rollercoaster ride with so many twists and turns and then it just… ends.
I absolutely love the fact that Noodle loves aussie youtube comedians. The Aunty Donna reference and the Cracker Milk cameo, fucken, my man.
This is my favorite Sunday television program. Thank you noodle
15:04 that's actually really similar to sonic adventure dx on steam
the steam version is a port of the xbox360/ps3 release
which is a port of the 2004 pc version
which is a port of the gamecube release
which is a port of the dreamcast original that changed a lot of the graphics to be "better"
btw each port got more and more bugs
like how the little cameo of cream the rabbit showing up, has super glitchy fucked up textures on steam
or the fact that when sonic is running full speed his shoes textures get fucked up and can even be seen on one of the screenshots on the store page
I like how when you mentioned forcing the artists, programmers and play testers to go back and correct animations, you used a furry to represent the programmers.
he isnt wrong lol
I'm dying over here. There's literally this one scene of chaos in the third act of _Penguins of Madagascar_ where they erect fake aspect boundaries that get encroached by multiple flying critters. _What is that same moment doing in Life of freaking Pi_

The inner machinations of experienced industry programmers are an enigma.
