I personally believe the 98 season was MJ greatest season. MJ carried the bulls despite no pippen for much of the season, rodman's decline, age, fatigue both mentally and physically. He willed a bulls team on fumes to their 6th title. game 6 vs utah in 98 was the ultimate display of why MJ is the GOAT. statically its one of this worst finals games but if you watched and take into account the injury to pippen, ineffectiveness of rodman and they role players. You saw that will to win that everyone talks about with mj was on full display. MJ didnt shy away from the moment he embraced it.
I agree. At this point MJ had a perfectly sculpted game. He already proved he can get any numbers he imagined but watching that season you saw an MJ that blended in with the background more yet before you knew he put up 30-8-6 with 3 steals and 2 blocks and turned out he went on an 8-0 scoring tear in the final 2 mins for the win. I saw this night after night while all my friends kept saying how overrated he was I was watching in awe and trying to figure out how this genius is managing to not waste a single bit of energy out there. Energy efficiency like I’ve never seen again. These GOAT talks make me laugh. MJ no contest. He will always be the greatest in my eyes and the way he came back from retirement twice and was always a top gunner is amazing. No one talks much about his old man stats with the Wizards. Combined he still averaged 21points, 1.5 steals, 4.5 assists, 6 rebounds, with 36 mins, and still shooting 45% from the field. Everyone was raggin on him for not putting up 30 per game while I sat back amazed at this old man and his complete game. Also did I mention he played SF those seasons? MJ is GOAT.

Dude, you left so much out of his 87-88 season!!! 87-88 was BY FAR his best season, not only that, but it was the best season any player has ever had in the NBA. Let me explain. In 1987-88, Jordan won the Scoring title, the Defensive player of the year award, the league MVP, the All Star game MVP, the Slam Dunk contest, led the league in steals, became the only player in NBA history to record 200 steals and 100 blocks in back 2 back seasons, and averaged 35ppg on 54% shooting. So yeah...............you left A LOT out of that season. He was at his absolute peak offensively and defensively that year, and the awards back that up. That was the most ridiculous season any player has ever had on both ends of the court. Some could say Wilt but Wilt played in an era with fewer teams and less talent in the league. Jordan played in the most talented era ever and was the best player in that era and it wasn't even close. Nobody has ever led the league in scoring AND won the defensive player of the year award AND the league MVP, plus all of his other accomplishments. He was BEAST that year.

Id say it’s his second or best regular season, but in the playoffs Detroit managed to defend him well. Overall it’s hard to not go with one of his championship years as his best.
I watched MJ's whole career and I have to say in my opinion 02-03 was not his best season but his most beautiful. He was like a God that had been cast off Mt. Olympus by his own Ego and at age 40 looked almost mortal at times. It was a wonderful drama to watch him falter and fail at times, but then dust himself off and redouble his efforts. Here was a 40 year old man fighting Father Time with all the ferociousness of an old hero who would not go gracefully into that good night. Every 20 year old in the league was trying to make a name by killing Jordan, but he fought them all. He was a poet. He was a champion past his time with a middle finger in the air who said "To be the best, you've to beat the best." Turns out the only opponent Jordan couldn't defeat was the clock.

I think his greatest achievement is being grounded even though we called him Air Jordan. So humble, a very good example of sportsmanship that future generations can emulate. For me he was good his whole career. Been so blessed to have witnessed such greatness firsthand.

Best accomplished season '95-'96 when he swept all the MVP awards, regular season MVP, All Star Game MVP and Finals MVP, along with winning another scoring title, making the All NBA First Team and All Defensive First Team while leading his team to 72 wins.
But the Bulls went to the Finals without him when he quit in 93/94 for a year to play baseball. Selfish of course. @Tyler Vincent You're the first person I've seen mention this. Pippen shot under 39% or less in several playoff runs, and never dominated a Finals offensively. In fact, he usually disappointed and MJ had to carry even more of the load.

He was his physical best, along with the strong mental aspects of the game, in 1991-1992. His best statistical year was the 88-89 season (32, 8, 8, 53.8% from the field, 85% from the line, 2.9 steals per game). A very close second is 1990-1991. His numbers were so good because he switched to the point guard position in March of 1989 and held it to the end of the season (24 games). This helped increase his rebound and assist totals/avgs for the season while his scoring dipped a bit. He also recorded 13 triple-doubles during that stretch, totaling out at 15 for the season!

kcire10 10 you can also clearly see that 91-92 is when he stepped up the post game and fade-away. He had both of them before but he really stepped it up during that season.
Then before the 4th title is when his fade-away and post-game went from like a 9.5/10 to a 10/10 as he polished them up even more

There has to be some kind of boosted stat effect by being the primary facilitator. It can't be just coincidence that the moment MJ started playing PG, his assists and rebounds shot up without any significant difference in his scoring. He averaged I believe 30.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 10.7 assists during those 24 games. It's pretty easy to figure out why the assists went up but why the rebounds also shot up is a little harder to figure out. But it happened so there was definitely something going on. Then the moment he went back to the 2 the following season, his rebounds and assist totals reverted back too. Because of that, I'm convinced had he stayed as a point guard throughout his career, his boosted stats would've stayed with him. He played the boosted stat role better than Lebron, Westbrook, Harden and all the others.
I always point to those 24 games when someone tries to claim Lebron was the better player based on the stat comparison between the two players in assists and rebounds.

The only thing I’d add under the season highlights would be in 1992-1993 when he averaged 41 points per game in the Finals against the Phoenix Suns which is the highest ppg average in NBA Finals history. Also, what Arthur McKelvie mentioned below about his 87-88 DPOY which I forgot about when I watched this.

For me personally, his best season was 92-93. 3-peat was an illusion because it never been done for a long long time n people started to doubt his legacy would continue or not. His teammates I believed have downhill situation, like Paxson, Cartwright, etc were aged. So he had to carry his team more that season. Knicks held homecourt advantage but yet the Bulls beat them. Barkley & the Suns held the best record n were predicted to win the championship. I remember watching the 93 finals amazed by his performance, dominating every game n after first 2 games I started to believe that they can win 3-peat. The drama of game 6 was unreal!!! Unbelievable game with amazing finish!!! I believe he averaged 41ppg in that series wasn't he.

Emmanuel Enyinwa what "Aged" teammates on the Bulls made the 1993-94 All Star team because Pippen,Grant and Armstrong (All-star reserve) weren't who he was talking about. And the Bulls added Steve Kerr,Luc Longley,Bill Wennington, and Toni Kukoc just to replace one man (Jordan) and still lost in the 2nd round but yet that same team the following season was struggling to stay above .500 before Jordan returned in 94-95.

Team barely noticed he was gone? They failed to make it to the ECF after 5 straight appearances. They did not win the title after 3 straight titles and their offense went from second best in 1993 to 14th best in 1994. I would say they missed MJ greatly.

His second best season was 1991-92 season. He won his 3rd MVP, 6th Scoring title, 5th All Defensive team selection. The Bulls had the best record in the NBA at 67-15. MJ had averages of 30.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 2.3 steals, 11 40 point games, 2 50 point games, 2 Triple Doubles, a 56 point game in the playoffs (Game 3 at Miami) a 46 point game in the Finals (Game 5 at Portland) Won his 2nd NBA Championship, 2nd Finals MVP, and a 2nd Olympic Gold medal in the summer of 1992.

It's actually difficult to say which season is the best because we always have to take into account there are personal accomplishments and team accomplishments. At personal level MJ had better seasons than that 90-91 one you chose but as a team that was the first real successful one. I also consider the 92-93 season and especially the finals against the Suns and MVP Barkley as one of the best ones. The Bulls beat the Suns with the league MVP and MJ had an amazing statline in the finals again against the team with the MVP. It's very difficult for me to say which one is the best one for me, the one when MJ had the biggest ppg total, the first championship or the 92-93 season but I think I'll pick the last one, 92-93 season and the finals against Barkley! "The unstoppabulls" season 95-96 was historical at the time of course with the 72-10 record but I think the Bulls were more stacked then than during the first three peat so 92-93 it is for me.
Good choice. Jordan had so many great years that sometimes it just comes down to what you personally value the most. The third championship put Jordan and the Bulls into a whole new class. It was the year Jordan himself felt he had accomplished enough in the sport. Plus facing Barkley and the Suns just added another level of drama. LeBron could tell you from recent experience that it's not easy beating the MVP in the finals.
In his rookie year for the 84-85 season, the Bulls fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Playoffs. Mike has always made the playoffs with the Bulls.

The 1992, 1997, and 1998 seasons are the ones that stand out to me the most.
In 1992, he faced the toughest Finals opponent of the 1st 3peat, the TrailBlazers. And he was more refined and smooth, while retaining his explosive athleticism.
In 1997, he was clearly older, and losing just some of his athleticism, while still being the best player in the league. And W/ his age, his game became even more refined, and his wisdom would become even greater. I believe he was robbed of MVP.
In 1998, the grand finale of his illustrious career W/ the Bulls, he was still able to get the job done. There's just something about him this season that lets you know he will never guardable at any age.

I’m sure he would say any season where they won the title was his best year, but it’s hard to overlook what he did in the 87-88 season. That year he was the first and on,y player in nba history to win the scoring title and defensive player of the year during the same season. Along with that, he won the dunk contest, all-star game MVP, and the league MVP. I was in high school back then and I remember how enjoyable it was watching him play on WGN. In the 90s he became an overall better player being much more efficient and team player. He also bulked up to take the physical beating he was getting from the bad boy pistons. But during the late 80s there was nothing like him or since. He was so quick, could jump out of the gym and had this ability to hang in the air while the other players around him would fall to the ground. He literally made the other players look foolish. He was just a this raw talent unbelievable talent.
Bird and king had their highest ppg of their careers in 84. Jordans 28.2 is higher than either bird or kings next best season.

This guy definitely don't acknowledge MJ's defensive accolades. He won a defensive player of the year award and should mention his all NBA and defensive team citations. He also won all-star MVPs and Finals MVPs.

In 91’ season , you forgot one important factor that made them beat the Piston and that is the “Triangle Offense”, that made the Jordan rule ineffective.
Hard to argue against 1991 Jordan. I mean, he had a lot of great seasons, but it was a good blend of his athleticism and basketball savvy, not to mention team success. 1988 or 1989 was his best box score year, but 1991 was just as good as any season according to Basketball Reference.
His best box score season, 1989, I tend to look at as what if Westbrook took fewer bad shots and forced fewer bad turnovers. I also liked that playoff run, because that was the last year in which the Bulls were true underdogs and yet managed to pull off some impressive playoff wins.
The Bulls did make the playoffs in Jordan's rookie year losing to the Bucks 3-1. How hard is it to look stuff like this up?

This vid was obviously done by someone who knew mj only as a scoring machine and not much more. He even highlighted mj's slam dunk win (which is novelty to be honest) and said absolutely nothing about him winning the DPOY and leading the NBA in steals per game. And then tell us what mj's best season is.

MJ'S peak was 1991-1993. He built muscle, could drive on you anytime, all the time, became a good passer, and could kill u with his jumper. He also developed his post game. All that wasnt the case his first couple yrs or when he came back

Thanks for the vid. Good analysis but you left out half of his accomplishments. One of Jordan’s greatest attributes was his ability to play both sides of the ball. He is the only player in history to get 200 steals and 100 blocks in a season and he did it twice! The winning play vs the Jazz in the finals the first year was a steal by Jordan. His defensive game can not be overlooked.
Also his playoff stats are better than his regular season stats. His Finals MVPs are not mentioned.
He played 82 games 9 times and dude was averaging over 30 with only 2-3 3 pointers attempted. 10x scoring champ, 3x steals leader, dpoy and 5 mvps. That man was insane.
Very limited stats by focusing on his scoring only. Why not include his steals titles as well?

His 98 (final bulls season) takes the cake for me. At this point MJ had a perfectly sculpted game. He already proved he can get any numbers he imagined but watching that season you saw an MJ that blended in with the background more yet before you knew he put up 30-8-6 with 3 steals and 2 blocks and turned out he went on an 8-0 scoring tear in the final 2 mins for the win. I saw this night after night while all my friends kept saying how overrated he was I was watching in awe and trying to figure out how this genius is managing to not waste a single bit of energy out there. Energy efficiency like I’ve never seen again. These GOAT talks make me laugh. MJ no contest. He will always be the greatest in my eyes and the way he came back from retirement twice and was always a top gunner is amazing. No one talks much about his old man stats with the Wizards. Combined he still averaged 21 points, 1.5 steals, 4.5 assists, 6 rebounds, with 36 mins, and still shooting 45% from the field. Everyone was raggin on him for not putting up 30 per game while I sat back amazed at this old man and his complete game. Also did I mention he played SF those seasons? MJ is GOAT.

90’ was a strong year for a lot of guys. Rookie David Robinson led the Spurs to a 35 game improvement. Of the top 3 vote getters, Jordan was the only guy who was a great defensive player. Magic was getting increasingly vulnerable to quick PGs. Barkley was never a really good defender. I thought Jordan should have won.
93? Some voter fatigue there, and the Bulls won 10 games less than the previous year. Whatever. Barkley was great, Hakeem was great...Jordan was still better.

Never watched him play so I can’t consider him the GOAT but as a Basketball player myself I can recognize that he was an alien for sure. Of all the highlights I’ve seen though, for some reason 91’-92’ season where they go back to back, sticks out the most to me. Just looking at the highlights, he played at a completely different level and everyone else looked like G League talent compared to him.

Yeah, 1988 was definetly a season that separates MJ from pretty much everybody else. He led the league in points (35.0) and steals (3.16). Are you kidding me!!? He earned Defensive Player Of The Year and a scoring-title the same season! Unreal, and if im not mistaken, unmatched too.
The 96-97 season was the best version of Jordan IMHO, with 91-92 being the close 2nd. In 96-97 MJ still had amazing speed and jumping ability and his footwork was better than ever (he was even faster than he was in 95-96). He read the floor better than his physical peak years (90-93), and the game was so easy for him that he managed to save his energy for the playoffs. In the 97-98 regular season he played so hard (partly because Pippen missed half a season) and he lost his legs in the playoffs. He didn't have his range so he had to work much harder in the low post.
In the 91-92 season MJ was in his physical peak and he was playing with a new level of confidence because of the fiirst championship. He would get the ball around the elbow and look at his defender realizing he could go wherever he wanted. The game was wide open and it was the beginning of a new level of understanding. However his footwork and shooting weren't as good as he was in 95-98 seasons.
The 92-93 season he was still awesome but I think he put his foot off the gas occasionally, maybe because he was recovering from the busy olympic summer or maybe he got complacent (that would be the only season I think that Jordan didn't always give his best effort. One thing about MJ was that he never played down to his opponents' level- Kobe was the only other all time great that played hard in every game)

IMO Jordan retired due to having no competition, as a pure competitor without much competition it must have been tough. Then returning when people started to doubt him gave him the competitive drive to then become the best in the world again.
Matthew Dearnley he retired because of the death of his father and probably some other behind the scenes situations with the nba’s David Stern.

You Forgot his Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1988. I also think that setting the all time NBA scoring record in the playoffs which still stands today was at least “something to speak of” in 1985-1986.

I like 90-91 as a choice because he climbed to the top with team success which at the time had to be a huge relief for him. I also think although his numbers had been better in the 80's he still had all of his athleticism but played more in control in a successful team situation.
He took down the Pistons and Lakers in the playoffs which was very symbolic showing it was the Bulls time.
The jumpman logo did first appear on the Jordan 3 but the pose came from an advertisement for Nike in 1985. Side note, he actually did the same pose wearing New Balance before his first Olympics.
The dunk against the Dallas mavericks was the dunk that symbolizes the Jordan logo!
1990-91, even Michael says it’s his best. He’s at the peak of his hunger trying to win the first title, the peak of his physical skills, and the peak of his ability to be a great teammate. His efficiency is outstanding and his numbers are great.

It depends how you measure it. In terms of his actual ability, it's somewhere between 1991-1998 (I would say 1992-93, just based on things you see him do that year, including the series he took over against the Knicks after going down 2-0, and averaging 41.0 PPG in the Finals). But in terms of statistics, his 1987-88 season is the best season in the history of the NBA by any player. MVP, defensive player of the year, averaged over 35 PPG, shooting 53.5% and leading the league in steals. Just absurd!
