Also a lot of places in Japan will completely omit the number 4. A lot of apartment complexes won't have a fourth floor, or a 4th apartment on a floor. (Jyu being 10)

You're very correct about the nature of Death Note's storytelling. Unlike other anime, and shows in general, which have a filler, Death Note is pretty much a breakneck plot charge from beginning to end. It slows down for specific moments or scenes, rather than slowing down for entire episodes.
I agree with your opinion but not all fillers are bad at least imo. I've seen episodes of naruto that do nothing to the story but some of those fillers are actually pretty good. But yeah I agree that there should've been more episodes and imo an alternate ending where Light actually wins. But still if the characters are a cliche or uninteresting but the story is then fuck fillers. But if it's the opposite then I'm ok with having fillers every now and then.
For me it felt very much like the movie Se7en, non-stop thrill accompanied with great holy crap/wtf moment. It really didn't let you breathe and kept you at the edge of your seat for a huge chunk of the series.

They never go into the details of the rules, so it always seems like the writes can do whatever they want to. But hard magic is hard to write because once you've set your rules you have to follow them. Death Note rides right on the line of hard rules that can be worked within and I love it.

Either way, too risky a move in my opinion.

No, you can't extend your life using the Death Note because one of the rules resealed in later episode is that you can only control the time of death of a victim within 23 days after you write down the name. Unless you somehow know you're fated to die in less than 23 days, using the Note on yourself wouldn't do you any good. The only way you can get extra life out of a Death Note is to have a Shinigami use their Note to somehow eliminate the cause of your fated death (like killing the truck driver who's fated to run you over before he drives the truck out of his garage). Doing so would kill the Shinigami though so don't count on it to hard.

One of the rules is that you have to kill a person before their predetermined life span. So if someone was supposed to die at 50 you can say they die at 49 but not 51. So you can't lengthen anyone's life.

Dom Bon as Long as it’s not a Death caused by supernatural means like the death note, it would probably be considered natural. Old age isn’t the only natural death as far as death note is concerned. A guy who gets hit by a car or stabbed or shot would have his life span match the moment he dies regardless of cause of death. Theirs actually a book about this it’s a death note side story about a murderer named B who’s obsessed with L and has his own shinigami eyes but no death note. He kills people at the exact moment their time is up because it’s when they are fated to die, he literally doesn’t have the ability to kill anyone before their time is up, if he tried to stab or shoot someone he would fail. It’s actually a pretty good read, it’s the case where L first works with Naomi Misora.

it's not really related to the series, but there is a "prequel" spin-off manga that tells the story of a previous case of L, where he had to solve a series of murders. In there, the killer was a normal human that was born with the Shinigami Eyes, but never had the Death Note. He went crazy and started killing people when they were supposed to die, and so the crimes were almost unsolvable. It's just a little fun fact, since you were talking about how it would be to have those eyes and not have a death note

A little clarification. For the guy that was hit by a truck, Light simply wrote car accident in there. It took so much space of that page because he tried every spelling of that name. Since the guy only said it out loud, Light didn't know the exact spelling.

I don't think that they ever explained it and it's the biggest question that I've had with the deathnote. Let's say a kid named bob is born. His parents drop him off at a door, then the people at that house adopt him/take care of him and give him the name John. If you write John in the deathnote, would he die? Or would it have to be bob, because in that case he would be immune to the deathnote without even knowing it... of course the eyes would tell them his name is bob, but without the eyes bob/john would be immune. Also, what is the name that you see with the eyes? Is it the name on their birth certificate? What if they legally change their name like Calvin said? Would it still show their original? What if they had no birth certificate, or what if someone was just born without a name in general? Would you just see nothing? Or would you see their nickname or I guess "new" name? Who knows, but I kind of wish that the show went into this a little bit.
It just a loophole that wasn't thought out. And that why it never was mentioned. Because if new names would work, than just writing L would suffice. If not and chosen name had no bearing than, writer opened up a big chunk of population to immunity. Women, in majority of cultures tend/expected/forced to change their last name. If Naomi would have being married by the time they meet it would be the end of Kira run ;) Let's complicate your example. Biological father (Jack Black) doesn't know he has a child; Mother (Skyler White) dies during birth. No blood relatives left. What power decides which complete stranger can give this kid a name that would stick with them for the rest of their life? Let's say that chld care system names the kid Tom Green. His foster parents eventually give him his new last name Brown, so now he is officially Tom Brown. Kid doesn't like his name, his friends call him Tommy and he likes it more. Once he becomes adult he changes his name to the name that he always wanted Tyrone. Let's not even bring marriage into this. So... what name would shinigami see? - Tom Black - no one would know why including the kid. - Tom White - no one would know why including the kid. - Tom Green - cause it was first legal name? - Tom Brown - cause it was second legal name?! - Tyrone Brown - I would say it shouldn't work because name is, in 99% cases, something ones receives not gives themselves. - Tommy Brown - shouldn't work cause L didn't. And if you argue well it the same as Tom it just written slightly different, well than how come Light had to write all possible variations if he wasn't sure which kanji to use. And in person original language on top of it. There are pretty complex writing systems that wouldn't be easy to reproduce by hand for total noob. Arabic comes to mind. Or what happens to children that adopted by people from different countries? Especially, if their never learned their mother tongue? Possibilities are endless.
Except that the conviction rate for japan is like 95%, with alot of those being false charges, so technically light is murdering innocent people alot of the time

According to one of the rules (don't know if it's mentioned later, but it was in the supplement book with the mangas), if you write in a death that takes place after the person was fated to die, they would still die normally.

+IMVADER2 This series does address that there *are* murderers and rapists and crime-committers in this show who got away with their misdeeds off the hook, like the man who murdered Misa’s parents or the sexual assaulter Light mentions to Raye Penber next episode. Though Japan’s strict judicial systems also has a lot of people who are wrongly accused of their crimes despite being innocent. It’s why the Ace Attorney games parody, make fun of, exaggerate, and criticize it.
Very true, there are some people that still go free like Misa's killer! I guess I didn't word it properly, but I never meant to imply that everyone gets locked up/no one goes free. And yes it's tragic that false accusations are so prevalent over there. I still need to play the Ace series tho.

After a name is in the Death Note the most a person can live for is two days max. Cause of death isn't specified 40 seconds before heartattack, if it is they have a max of 42 hours to be alive before the specified death is carried out.

Everyone has a natural lifespan in DN. You can not extend it by using the death not, the only ones who can do that are the Shinigami who take the remaining years from the natural lifespan. If a human does write that they will die after their natural lifespan then they will still die when their time runes out.
Spoilers for the end of the series In retrospect, if Light did go for the deal, it wouldn’t matter most likely. Ryuk confirmed that he wouldn’t be killed sometime in prison for many years, so it’s most likely that if he did the deal, he’d still be around for maybe another 20-30 years most likely
"How to use it" -In the Death Note, you cannot set the death date longer than the victims original life span. even if the victims death is set in the Death Note beyond his/her original life span. The victim will die before the set time. -By manipulating the death of a human that has influence over another humans life, that humans original life span can sometimes be lengthened. -A humans death caused by the Death Note will indirectly lengthen some other humans original length of life even without a specific intention to lengthen a particular persons original life span in the human world. I believe the solution to most of your questions is something that was said already in one of the earlier episodes: if you write something that is impossible to happen, it will be replaced by heart attack in 40 seconds. Meaning you can't send a meteorite to kill someone, or you can't make Scarlett materialize out of nowhere, or you can't increase your own lifespan, since it's impossible for a human to gain more life. So if you wrote your name so that you would die many years after your scheduled death, you would actually end up killing yourself in 40 seconds since that death would be materially impossible - you can't die if you're already dead. And remember, the notebook works only on names, not on fake aliases - so if you write Black Widow you would actually get a spider instead of Scarlett Jo
No, they haven't said that in the show, yet. I think it's in the next episode, or at most the one after that, while Light experiments with prisoners to see the limits of the Death Note in order to get rid of Ray. But that's only next episode, not this one.

The Shinigami Eyes also gives you 70/20 vision aside from letting you know the name and fated death time of people you see, so it's slightly less terrible a deal.

It just a loophole that wasn't thought out. And that why it never was mentioned. Because if new names would work, than just writing L would suffice. If not and chosen name had no bearing than, writer opened up a big chunk of population to immunity. Women, in majority of cultures tend/expected/forced to change their last name. If Naomi would have being married by the time they meet it would be the end of Kira run ;)
Let's complicate your example. Biological father (Jack Black) doesn't know he has a child; Mother (Skyler White) dies during birth. No blood relatives left. What power decides which complete stranger can give this kid a name that would stick with them for the rest of their life? Let's say that chld care system names the kid Tom Green. His foster parents eventually give him his new last name Brown, so now he is officially Tom Brown. Kid doesn't like his name, his friends call him Tommy and he likes it more. Once he becomes adult he changes his name to the name that he always wanted Tyrone. Let's not even bring marriage into this. So... what name would shinigami see?
- Tom Black - no one would know why including the kid.
- Tom White - no one would know why including the kid.
- Tom Green - cause it was first legal name?
- Tom Brown - cause it was second legal name?!
- Tyrone Brown - I would say it shouldn't work because name is, in 99% cases, something ones receives not gives themselves.
- Tommy Brown - shouldn't work cause L didn't. And if you argue well it the same as Tom it just written slightly different, well than how come Light had to write all possible variations if he wasn't sure which kanji to use. And in person original language on top of it. There are pretty complex writing systems that wouldn't be easy to reproduce by hand for total noob. Arabic comes to mind.
Or what happens to children that adopted by people from different countries? Especially, if their never learned their mother tongue? Possibilities are endless.

I'm not one here to push my opinion of the show onto others, but Death Note most definitely doesn't have "Campy Writing" the so called Critiques would have to be awfully dumb to not realise the true messages behind the show.
Death Note is a masterpiece to me, after having seen it multiple times and analysing it from every angle possible.
There's a reason people jerk off the ending as bad, because they're too focused on rooting for the person they're rooting for or *rooted* for...that they forget to barely scratch the surface of the show and what it truly means, the context & the philosophical Ideology behind the show. And in that Death Note is masterclass, exceeds most animes ever easily when it comes to writing.
Ginko Parasyte is an anime I'd call a masterpiece. If you haven't already seen it, it's only about 24 episodes, and has amazingly deep, philosophical themes as well.
Don't get me wrong Death Note is amazing but Monster blows this out of the water.

Danjor I've seen Parasyte and yeah I certainly love it, it's a bit unfairly underrated ironically the cause is somewhat similar to Death Note.

According to one of the rules (don't know if it's mentioned later, but it was in the supplement book with the mangas), if you write in a death that takes place after the person was fated to die, they would still die normally.

My friends had the exact same reaction when we all watched this show for the first time. What we thought was gonna shown slower throughout the whole show was instead shown immediately and we had no clue what would come next because of that.

This series does address that there *are* murderers and rapists and crime-committers in this show who got away with their misdeeds off the hook, like the man who murdered Misa’s parents or the sexual assaulter Light mentions to Raye Penber next episode.
Though Japan’s strict judicial systems also has a lot of people who are wrongly accused of their crimes despite being innocent. It’s why the Ace Attorney games parody, make fun of, exaggerate, and criticize it.
Very true, there are some people that still go free like Misa's killer! I guess I didn't word it properly, but I never meant to imply that everyone gets locked up/no one goes free.
And yes it's tragic that false accusations are so prevalent over there. I still need to play the Ace series tho.

After a name is in the Death Note the most a person can live for is two days max. Cause of death isn't specified 40 seconds before heartattack, if it is they have a max of 42 hours to be alive before the specified death is carried out.

Everyone has a natural lifespan in DN. You can not extend it by using the death not, the only ones who can do that are the Shinigami who take the remaining years from the natural lifespan. If a human does write that they will die after their natural lifespan then they will still die when their time runes out.

In retrospect, if Light did go for the deal, it wouldn’t matter most likely. Ryuk confirmed that he wouldn’t be killed sometime in prison for many years, so it’s most likely that if he did the deal, he’d still be around for maybe another 20-30 years most likely
So many people don’t get this. They think his life time ended in the warehouse. Ryuk did indeed say he didn’t want to wait for him to die.
"How to use it"
-In the Death Note, you cannot set the death date longer than the victims original life span. even if the victims death is set in the Death Note beyond his/her original life span. The victim will die before the set time.
-By manipulating the death of a human that has influence over another humans life, that humans original life span can sometimes be lengthened.
-A humans death caused by the Death Note will indirectly lengthen some other humans original length of life even without a specific intention to lengthen a particular persons original life span in the human world.

Guys, the thing about the time limit to pospose a death is not explain in the anime. A death can't be posposed more than 23 days after being write in the death note.

I believe the solution to most of your questions is something that was said already in one of the earlier episodes: if you write something that is impossible to happen, it will be replaced by heart attack in 40 seconds. Meaning you can't send a meteorite to kill someone, or you can't make Scarlett materialize out of nowhere, or you can't increase your own lifespan, since it's impossible for a human to gain more life. So if you wrote your name so that you would die many years after your scheduled death, you would actually end up killing yourself in 40 seconds since that death would be materially impossible - you can't die if you're already dead. And remember, the notebook works only on names, not on fake aliases - so if you write Black Widow you would actually get a spider instead of Scarlett Jo
No, they haven't said that in the show, yet. I think it's in the next episode, or at most the one after that, while Light experiments with prisoners to see the limits of the Death Note in order to get rid of Ray. But that's only next episode, not this one.
