Light is killing wanting people to know it's Kira, so that it prevents people from doing bad knowing they could die if they do evil things, not just ego. At least this was the point he claimed when he started.
But what about killing cops? He killed fake L just so he can prove a point without even knowing the guy was an actual criminal. That’s where the line blurs. This is why this show is so compelling. If they don’t catch Light then he’s Kira and he is Justice but if the do, he is a Criminal and a murderer.
Rob Vucak It's clear that you don't understand what Mats Martensson keeps telling you. Human laws including juridical systems were created by humans to help the societies develop further. The only *real* laws are the laws of physics. Those 'imaginary' laws that exist as concept on the paper or in our minds are not real in the physical world. If you write something down that does not mean it is real. You can believe in it as a real thing, but if others don't, they might think that you are crazy. As long as are among others who believe in the same thing you are 'free' from this 'judgement' (look at religions - basically the same thing). I think what you are missing are some philosophy lessons to actually grasp Mats' point of view. The whole "Death Note" is full of religious and philosophical symbolism and I strongly recommend to educate yourself (and any everyone else who's reading this), because I believe it is worth it. :)
Rhop, can you pass on that cultural differences aside, Shinigami are essentially the Japanese equivalent of grim reapers not demons. Also, Light's surname "Yagami" has the Japanese character (Gami/Kami) in it for God. Yagami literally means "Night God". Not exactly uncommon for a Japanese surname but there's further fuel for a god-complex.
The L Funk Pop on the table nearly fucked up the reveal there for a minute lol, but it all worked out in the end. Gotta say, I don't think I've gotten this hooked to a reaction series this quickly, I'm glad you guys are already seem to be really enjoying it.
The reason Light wants people to know about him is because he wants the fear of his killings to dissuade potential criminals, basically. He's killing for glory in a way, yes, but it's the kind of glory that will make people think twice about committing crimes, because they'll be afraid of the specter of Kira. If he was just silently killing criminals through different means all of the time, then he'd only be reducing the population of criminals who's names and faces we already know (meaning most of them are either in jail or on the run), but not doing anything to scare the unknown criminals into not being criminals any more.
Absolutely true. What I find so compelling about his character is that he's arrogant which isn't too uncommon, but he can also back it up, which is a lot rarer. He's got a massive ego in regards to seeing himself as basically the prime specimen of humanity, endowed with the right to pass judgement on the "filth", but at the same time, he *is* shown to be immensely smart, immensely charming (when he wants to be), and immensely athletic/attractive, so in a way he kind of has every reason to feel arrogant, which makes it all the more interesting.
Wolf6120 True, Light basically wants to act as a deterrent. Don't commit a crime, because you'll never know if the GOD Kira isn't watching and will judge you where you stand.

The compliant prisoner was probably offered a deal. He was probably offered a life sentence if he played his role convincingly and survived after they'd broadcast over all of Japan. He'd have nothing to lose.
The reason why this episode is important is because the series would be over otherwise. The Death Note is so convenient that Light could never be caught if he was careful. But here, L got to him psychologically. He determined that L is a threat he can't ignore. And because L is super careful, he can only get close to L by letting L get close to him. Both of them risk themselves to the other to entice him and draw closer while not getting too close. That's why there is a challenge in this series. If Light ignored or missed L here, like Shane mentioned, he would never be caught. But he'll make risky plays because now he knows that's the only way to get to L.
poker i said this because later on in the series, people comment "oh why would light even do that it would be safer to do so and so. L would never find him." Give information to L that he has inside info - make L investigate the japanese police - kill whoever he was investigated by - make it publicly so the japanese police would see what he did and thus most of the people to resign from the task force or investigate L because they distrust him. This is what exactly happens in the following episode. Light had no other choice but to take these risk otherwise it would have been just the same without a progress. Even at the end of the series he stated that if both of them dont go all out and obstacles like M interfere, their plans will never work and they will simply continue like before, without any progress. I like the way Light explains people who say "killing is just wrong". Most people would give the PC answer while in their hearts they agree with Light. Like how the crew say they don't agree with Light but when Edward was beating the living hell out of Shou Tucker they were fine with ED killing him
PackoVids What I like about this show is that there isn't a general consensus to answer the problem of crime & punishment. Each person's individual action determines their character and that includes the decision to take a human life for whatever reason.
Well, he's right to a degree but I don't know that I agree with "most" people secretly agreeing with Light. The UK and many European countries voted to stop the death penalty for instance, and many Death Note fans sympathised with L over Light.
@@allelujah1210 The more PC a person is, the more of a piece of shit they generally are behind their mask. But a lot of people disagree with Kiras mindset. That's why most of the civilized countries in the world don't have the death penalty anymore. One person getting to decide who deserves to live and who doesn't is just wrong. And as Light very openly shows, it will always end up getting abused. Someone will feel like a god and not restrain themselves to just "evil" people anymore. Especially since who is evil and good isn't that clear cut all the time. Especially since most people who do evil do it because they THINK they're right. Most people kill people because they don't think they deserve to live. People who kill their cheating partner don't think they're "evil", they think their partner deserved it. Or people who steal because they don't think stealing from someone who is rich anyway is bad. Robin Hood is hailed a hero, but he is just a thief. Or even just people who steal because they have nothing and would starve otherwise. At what point do you stop considering people vigilantes and just murderers or criminals? Do you believe one person can do that without straying from the right path?
one of the things that tipped me off to how unhinged light is was how he rigged his desk drawer. he's all like "if anyone sets my desk on fire, they'll just think i was trying to protect my diary!" as if literally anyone on earth would burn down their whole house to prevent someone from reading a journal entry. if anything, that's just more evidence against him. absolutely insane behavior.
Yeah, the second he made that first kill with the Death-Note, something snapped in him. His weird rationalization that he's doing it to make the world a "better place" was already a big flag, and honestly sounds like a coping mechanism because he realized he just murdered someone. Then it spiraled out of control from there.
Please, someone convince Calvin that he's terrible at names. He acts bewildered that he actually got the names wrong even though he does it all the time
When they were discussing all the aesthetics like "what will he do when he finishes all the pages" and I remembered that the anime even makes sure that Light is aware of that too and they show him discussing about that part too, and I realized, Fuckin hell, they have left literally no loophole!
The battle between light and L is one of the greatest every time you think one is about to win the other turns it around on him its like a game of chess played by two masters constantly checking the other
What makes this scenario a problem is that depending on a few circumstances, the way the general population of people will answer the question differently. For example, if you had the choice to divert the train from the track with the five people on it towards another track with one person on that one, would you do it? The general population would say yes, with the reason that they would end up saving more lives. But if you were to change that one man on the track to a fat man on a bridge over that track with five people, and that one man is capable of stopping the train before it reaches the five people before killing himself in the process, would you push the fat man over (assuming you had the strength to do so)? Most people would say no, despite the logic behind the previous problem of saving more lives. You can learn more about this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/yg16u_bzjPE/v-deo.html I agree with your last statement. When we get down to it, humans really are "stupid egotistical self-deluded beings."
The situation Aaron is referring to is called the Trolley Problem, it's a series of thought experiments created by the philosopher Philippa Foot that's meant to test different people from different walks of life and their varying definitions of what qualifies as morally right and wrong. There are hundreds of variations to the Trolley Problem, some of the most famous including the ones Aaron mentioned. It's typically understood as being intended to pose the more general philosophical question of whether it's ethical to perform an action that harms someone in order to prevent a greater number of people from being harmed. It is often applied in real life to various scenarios including the Chernobyl incident.
As someone who has never seen Death Note, this was a lot better episode than the last one, cause I finally am intrigued about where the story is going to go from here, especially now that there is a threat with L that could actually be serious
I’m so hyped that you started this series. DN is a masterpiece one must definitely watch, anime-fan or not. It will be truly interesting to see which one of you guys will side with Light and L because both are equally loved in the fandom.
Watching your reactions to this takes me back to when I watched Death Note for the first time. Just keep going, guys. This is the greatest cat and mouse game in all of anime, and it only gets more interesting from here.
Regarding the discussion around 17:00: Light basically said the reason he wants to be known is to preempt crime by striking the fear of god (pardon the pun) into them through his killings.
After watching that godawful netflix movie,I needed to rewatch the anime, which I've been doing the past 2 weeks and wow this reaction really came in at the perfect time for me. you guys already seem very interested in this and I know this show is gonna spark a lot of interesting conversations between you guys and I can't wait! Eric is already all hearts-eyes and I'm really looking forward to seeing more! This is now already my favorite reaction series of yours, followed by korra/avatar. keep it up!
i think the case that kind of gave Light away is the one from the hostage taking at some kindergarden where the criminal suddenly had a heart attack and the teachers and kids managed to get out. i'm sooooooo glad you guys are watching this now! i've wanted u guys to watch it for a long time! hahahaha
What a lot of people don’t realize when they say "subs are better than dubs because the subs have a more faithful/better script than dubs and dubs misconstrue parts of the show they're adapting" is that subtitles are an adaptation of the original Japanese script, just like how English dubs are an adaptation in and of themselves. There are videos out there that discuss or point out that not every subbed translation is 100% accurate and that many take liberties of their own. Most people think subs are 100% exactly what the original Japanese script says, but they’re not. That’s why there are so many fan translations that translate the dialogue of various anime and manga in different ways; even official companies that subtitle foreign shows have somewhat differing interpretations of what the original language says. What also bugs me is when people rag on dubs just for his words or phrases that are different than what the subs use, even though they’re synonymous enough. One comment said the last phrase Light and L shout to each other at the end of this episode is an "incorrect translation" from what some version of the Death Note translation said in a subtitle. They apparently say "For I am just" instead. “For I am just” and “I am Justice” are synonymous enough here, and “I am Justice” not only fits in perfectly to emphasize Light’s and L’s points-of-view on themselves and each other, but also sounds and flows better as a whole. Plus, whoever subbed that could've easily have just *interpreted* whatever they said as "For am I just" instead of "I am justice." Most dubs nowadays don’t really make inaccurate or heavily localized scripts on purpose (like 4Kids dubs did) or make major mistakes in translation, and the liberties they make are usually only for the sake of adding a joke, making sure the dialogue fits the lip flaps of the characters, or making the dialogue less repetitive and flow better to fit the language they’re voicing it in. Some dubs still make the occasional mistake and controversial change every now and then, but it's usually either uncommon or debatable whether it's a bad change or not, and most examples people use to trash talk dubs like this one are rarely ever justified.
The trolley question is a very common psychology question, it's supposed to detect sociopathic tendencies(if I remember right?) The idea is number of lives saved (most people will save the most lives possible) but when the fat guy is introduced it becomes about getting ur own hands dirty and becomes to kill one person to save others which a lot less people do and it seems to be people with sociopathic tendencies seem to be able to disconnect themselves from the situation and still make practically same choice and do the "right" thing to save more lives.
"Why us ?" Well it honestly would not be so strange for the US and there are not all that many organizations who are large and influential enough. FBI or CIA ain't that bad of a hunch. Ls first move is absolutely legendary.
If you’re wondering, shinigami is derived from shin meaning death and gami (often kami) meaning god, so death god is a literal translation, but it is often translated as reaper. Though this specific type of shinigami is unique to death note, the concept of shinigami can be found in a multitude of Japanese stories.
L would broadcast the video through the regions until that criminal would die It just happened that the first region they broadcasted was where light was.
It was the most popular region in japan (kanto, where tokyo is) so it was logical for them to first broadcast there and also the chance Light was living there was higher.
He wants to be known because it creates a symbol. Having people know that there is a "kira" out there who punishes evil will be the best deterrent in Light's mind.
Oh, about the train thing, and I know you guys don't usually read comments, but somehow I hope this will be an exception! So there's a T.V. show, a sitcom, that exists right now. And I don't want to discuss much details about it right now, but basically there's a magical being who forces someone to go through the train thing, and it's hilarious! Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/lDnO4nDA3kM/v-deo.html Just wanted to bring that out! :)
I watched Death Note for the first time back in high school, and back then, I rooted for Kira 100%, because I was edgy and I believed in his goals... But the older I get, the more I realize the government isn't too reliable. When I liked Kira, I didn't know about the importance of Due Process, and I didn't know of the rate of false imprisonment. With this new perspective, I think I'm rooting for L this time around. You can't blindly kill "alleged" criminals without giving them a chance to prove their innocence.
@@thenight130 Well I know they have a website where they post their AOT videos and that includes the 10 minute highlight video and the full length. Not sure if they post DN there as well.
I believe that the conviction rate in Japan is so high that for most people it wouldn't even really occur to them that criminals might be innocent. I'm not sure it even occured to the author of Death Note tbh. I don't think it ever comes up.
You are going to enjoy this show so much. The conflict between those two is incredible. what is true justice is the main question of this show. It's a question of morals
The English dub of this is good. But I'm worried about Attack on Titan after the intro of the last video. There's a reason why everyone is so adamant about watching AoT subbed. I'm the least snobby person when it comes to anime because I simply don't watch very much. AoT is the only anime I've ever watched all the way through other than all the Dragon Ball stuff (I've seen most but not all of Death Note). But I can say that the voice actors in the sub are a HUGE reason why AoT is as good as it is. I truly believe it will ruin the show. At the very least a HUGE part of the audience will hate it so I hope they consider making the exception just that one time.
And that's what we can expect of Death Note: the conflict between the mass murdering Kira and the detective L trying to catch him. Strap in folks, because you're going for a ride.
"That Light is a bad apple." I think that's the funniest thing Shane has ever said. 😂😂😂

oh man i love this show, tom and jerry if they were geniuses
10:34 This scene gives me goosebumps
To be fair, wanting a fictional character to die and an actual, real-life person are two entirely different things.
It's true though, for example the hatred for Donald trump, I bet a lot of pc people wouldn't mind if kira wrote his name secretly
Aaron learning philosophy from a video game
Please, someone convince Calvin that he's terrible at names. He acts bewildered that he actually got the names wrong even though he does it all the time
When they were discussing all the aesthetics like "what will he do when he finishes all the pages" and I remembered that the anime even makes sure that Light is aware of that too and they show him discussing about that part too, and I realized, Fuckin hell, they have left literally no loophole!
I'm looking forward to the discussion more than the reaction.. love it
You guys convinced me to watch Death Note with you, so now we can enjoy it together. 2 episodes in and I already love it.
2:15 "I think that is him when using the death note" literally lmao
I'm loving these. Experiencing Death Note after so long with you guys is awesome. Nostalgia overload.
I laughed when they got pissed over the math bit. Damn quadratic equation.
Oh my god! I cant even begin to tell how much i'm enjoying watching you guys react to this .I've been waiting for this for almost 2 years.
The battle between light and L is one of the greatest every time you think one is about to win the other turns it around on him its like a game of chess played by two masters constantly checking the other
I remember saying the same thing Shane did. "How could they possibly find Light". Don't underestimate L, he is a f'n genius....but so is Light.
“We’re doing quadratic equations in math”
Almost everyone is pissed
Death Note is such a good show to discuss, because it deals so much with morality and ethics.
19:05 yeah the first question is called the trolley problem, and the other two are its variants
You can learn more about this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/yg16u_bzjPE/v-deo.html
I agree with your last statement. When we get down to it, humans really are "stupid egotistical self-deluded beings."
It's a problem because it reveals that inconsistency in most people's thinking.
This anime is always so intense. 😳
"I might end up killing my own family"
Damn. Light, I never thought you were this serious.
You guys are gonna love this.
You can just call Shinigami Gods of death.
Shinigami is shorter
6:15
L: There's a strong possibility that they're Japanese.
Eric: Ok.
Hearing them both say Justice at the same time made me think of Doflamingo.
Regarding the discussion around 17:00: Light basically said the reason he wants to be known is to preempt crime by striking the fear of god (pardon the pun) into them through his killings.
DN is one of my favorite animes. Kudos for reacting/reviewing it.
Please react to the Netflix version after you complete the series. It's gonna be hilarious.
m_ac ikr its so bad
m_ac Its kinder to watch the Netflix version with fresh eyes than bemoan the difference in content.
They don't react to movies. They only review.
Let the Battle of the Brains in the greatest War of Wits BEGIN!
Watching one episode a week means it'll take you guys a year to complete the series.
This is now already my favorite reaction series of yours, followed by korra/avatar. keep it up!
Eric to Aaron: 'You tried to kill a dragon who was just protecting it's water'
The line itself + the voice of Eric: I-AM-IN-STITCHES!!! LMAO X'DD
This is awesome. Great analysis guys.
That thumbnail scared the crap out of me lol 😨😨😂😂
i think the case that kind of gave Light away is the one from the hostage taking at some kindergarden where the criminal suddenly had a heart attack and the teachers and kids managed to get out. i'm sooooooo glad you guys are watching this now! i've wanted u guys to watch it for a long time!
Plus, whoever subbed that could've easily have just *interpreted* whatever they said as "For am I just" instead of "I am justice."
Most dubs nowadays don’t really make inaccurate or heavily localized scripts on purpose (like 4Kids dubs did) or make major mistakes in translation, and the liberties they make are usually only for the sake of adding a joke, making sure the dialogue fits the lip flaps of the characters, or making the dialogue less repetitive and flow better to fit the language they’re voicing it in.
Some dubs still make the occasional mistake and controversial change every now and then, but it's usually either uncommon or debatable whether it's a bad change or not, and most examples people use to trash talk dubs like this one are rarely ever justified.
4:26 calvin : "why us?"
...ummmmmm , you sure you want an answer to that? :)
Hope the creator of the subbed would ateast put sub to the japanese characters in the anime, some are pretty important
"Anti-Michael Scofield" is the best description for either L or Kira
They are just as smart as he is, but Kira is evil while L is a hero. Scofield lies somewhere in the middle.
The trolley question is a very common psychology question, it's supposed to detect sociopathic tendencies(if I remember right?)
The idea is number of lives saved (most people will save the most lives possible) but when the fat guy is introduced it becomes about getting ur own hands dirty and becomes to kill one person to save others which a lot less people do and it seems to be people with sociopathic tendencies seem to be able to disconnect themselves from the situation and still make practically same choice and do the "right" thing to save more lives.
"Why us ?"
Well it honestly would not be so strange for the US and there are not all that many organizations who are large and influential enough. FBI or CIA ain't that bad of a hunch.
Ls first move is absolutely legendary.
i just noticed that Eric i wearing a RWBY shirt
is*
9:45 so when he was screaming about him being god and whatnot do you guys think that his parents heard him or they just weren't home
L is light when he has the death note 😂😂😂 I love Calvin
Love that they are watching this. Especially the dub I enjoyed it very much
"We're doing quadratic equations in math"
"fuck"
They need to watch the film theory on how much people the death note actually killed.
If you’re wondering, shinigami is derived from shin meaning death and gami (often kami) meaning god, so death god is a literal translation, but it is often translated as reaper. Though this specific type of shinigami is unique to death note, the concept of shinigami can be found in a multitude of Japanese stories.
"How the hell is he gonna be caught??"
Y-you might not wanna know that.....
In a way they were right.
This is definitely my second favorite anime ever. I can't wait to see your reaction later on! You'll love it! :D
L would broadcast the video through the regions until that criminal would die It just happened that the first region they broadcasted was where light was.
It was the most popular region in japan (kanto, where tokyo is) so it was logical for them to first broadcast there and also the chance Light was living there was higher.
Well to be fair, anime fuckery is one of the best kinds of fuckery.
He wants to be known because it creates a symbol. Having people know that there is a "kira" out there who punishes evil will be the best deterrent in Light's mind.
24:55 "Is killed or be killed" that's some war flashbacks my friends
Oh, about the train thing, and I know you guys don't usually read comments, but somehow I hope this will be an exception! So there's a T.V. show, a sitcom, that exists right now. And I don't want to discuss much details about it right now, but basically there's a magical being who forces someone to go through the train thing, and it's hilarious!
Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/lDnO4nDA3kM/v-deo.html
Just wanted to bring that out! :)
I can't wait for them to get to episode 7!
Actually, flip phones are still really popular in Japan.
To compare blind wave's now knowledge to their knowledge at the end of the series will be fun
At first I didn't want them to watch it because it was another anime. But now I realize that it's perfect for them since they can speculate so much.
When I started watching this I ended up binging 28 episodes in one sitting till like 4 am
The episode 1 reaction is blocked. Do they have a place where they upload their blocked videos?
Patreon
The video with the 10 minute highlight and discussion, not the full length reactions
@@thenight130
Well I know they have a website where they post their AOT videos and that includes the 10 minute highlight video and the full length.
11 dislikes? I just heard eleven people died unexpectedly of a heart attack
WE NEED MORE EPS!
This is frustrating! You're telling me i need to wait another week to watch this!!! I need the full reaction show nowwww 😭😭
At the very least a HUGE part of the audience will hate it so I hope they consider making the exception just that one time.
tucci06 totally agreed man they definately should make an exception for Attack on Titan Sub
Just noticed Calvin said he's dyslexic. That might be a big reason why. Fuck. : (
tucci06 They don't want to read the subtitles cause it's distracting from what's going on in the anime, so most likely they will watch it dubbed.
+tucci06
The sub ruined a huge reveal in S1 for me. If they can't get a legitimate fucking translator, I will watch the dub.
tucci06 tbh the only voice I don’t like in the dub is Armin’s other than him the dub is pretty good especially Levi
They're gonna have to do some anime fuckery!! LMFAO i fucking died when shane said that
Oh shit, death note reactions, awesome
Eric's impression of Ryuk no joke was actually good LOL!
And that's what we can expect of Death Note: the conflict between the mass murdering Kira and the detective L trying to catch him.
Strap in folks, because you're going for a ride.
I’m so excited for more you don’t even know!!
