- Genesis - I Know What I Like (Single, Album Selling England by the Pound 1973)
Genesis in Concert 1976 - I Know What I Like
Phil Collins - Vocals, Drums
Mike Rutherford - Guitar, Bass
Tony Banks - Keyboards
Steve Hackett - Guitar
Bill Bruford - Drums
I think this is my favorite Genesis song of all time.
This period of Genesis with Bill Bruford on drums and Steve Hackett still in the band was just amazing!!
Yes, yes, yes and yes.
Right, man!
@@edicurcan7190 Thanks.
Bill Buford should have stuck around. He's a phenomenal player.
@@troylowe814 He left Yes immediately after Close To The Edge was released. He's not one for sticking around.
Bill Brufford is easily one of the greatest drumers ever, he played with Genesis, Yes and King Crimson and his solo discography is also amazing.
Prog rock drums
The drummer's drummer. Bruford is genius.
My 3 favourites groups EVER...Well...led zeppeling,jethro tull.....
Quite a resume lol
The mere fact he played with 3 of the Prog Rock giants says alot! I consider them to be the Holy Trinity (or quartet if one counts ELP) for Prog Rock just because alot of the members have worked with each, even on each of their own solo members work!
Hackett, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, & Bruford - so much talent on one stage!!
I didn’t know Bruford ever played with them 😮 great to hear his choices here
@@Toddobviousneither did I
😂
Hahaha lool. Amazing Brufford played with Yes, Genesis and King Crimson. Brufford and Collins are also friends way before they started each bands and they both played in Brand X. Also Drumming while singing is hardwork so Brufford stepped in to assist Genesis. @@Toddobvious
Creating masterpieces at so young an age!
I love how Gabriel left and Collins just inherited the weird and pure insanity on stage
3:10 very rare footage of Tony Banks smiling while playing
That's what Phil Collins does to you
He always looks sleepy on stage.
ULTRA-rare !!!
That one time...
He usually has a stick up his arse.
When you went to see Genesis in concert, you knew it was going to be amazing.
Irony in the most amazing form...the line "There's Mr Lewis" then at 1:09 is my dad in the crowd......his name is Mr Lewis !! what an absolute tune !
Cool where is this concert ? How old is your dad now?
@@beholden1663 I think he said it was in Hammersmith, but he remembers the gig very well !
Bingley Hall in Staffordshire, unless he went to Glasgow
how old is he?
Nothing finer than watching musicians taking so much pleasure from their work, living their best lives here!
Phil's talent and capacity to improvise in real times is unsurpassable. Bill is outstanding but he's like a drumming súper computer while Phil is everything at once, carelessly overshadowing everyone else with the added charisma. He's king Midas, born for success. Along with McCartney the greatest musicians of modern times
A great review of the facts!
Mike Rutherford has been permanently and severely underrated in my decades-long perception of Genesis and all the many rediscoveries of Genesis that "overpower" me to this day. Not only is he a good bass player, he is simply a brilliant musician.
his performance here certainly proves that point! he has a fascinating way of playing
Underrated 😂he’s in one of the most famous bands of all time worldwide. 😂😂😂😂
His syncopated bass line during the chorus has always fascinated me. Whereas he could have taken a simpler 4/4 approach he plays an immaculate rhythmical line in between the beats.
Phil Collins is a f@cking legend!
One of their best ever songs in my opinion. 😊
Genesis at its best.
I still have the single. With the peerless Twilight Alehouse B side.
Amazing live track back in the day omg 😊
THIS......NEVER gets OLD!
thatsrightforoureternallivesfuckyeahinthenameofJESUS...
Most played song on Jeremy Clarksons 8 track cartridge player.
Good times i bet!
Richard Hammond secretly loves this song
Some say Richard Hammond was both conceived and born to this song
@@finnmacdiarmid3250 brilliant!
I don't blame him.
Unbelievably slick bass work from Mike, just incredible - he's a much better bassist than most people give him credit for
Mike has always been a better instrumentalist than people ever seem to give him credit for. And he's a fantastic lyricist.

@@winterlongone pp
right you are
He was but he got out of shape, perhaps because the material he played no longer demanded it as much?
when Phil starts playing drums is an epic moment in music history, man what a legend, he was a great drummer and became a great singer and showman instantly like BOSS!
Yes!!!!
No, Genesis.
He's no Bill Buford.
@@radagastbrown9001 When did anybody compare him to Bill ?¿
@@radagastbrown9001 he's twice the drummer Bruford is.
Yep Genesis hired Bill Bruford to play drums because Phil became the lead man after Peters departure. Long before the Chester Thompson days. Phil Collins and Bill Bruford playing drums together is AMAZING!
@sean matth bc bill wasn’t as good as a fit on the rest of the tour as shown in this show 😅
@@hpatss4966 nope because he only said he would fill in for one tour.
@@radagastbrown9001 where did I say that wasn’t the case? I know bill was only on for one tour but that doesn’t make him any less eccentric in Genesis. He was too much for it. Both him and Phil agreed that bill wanted to play more relaxed and jam more than the other guys wanted to. Bad fit but good for the tour a
Great Band ever.
King Crimson, and I think it was a great fit. Made it interesting and kept you guessing where is Bill gonna drop that snare in this time?
This makes me go back in time. There is no one like this nowadays.
And this is how Genesis was saved by the two greatest drummers in rock history.
So much talent , so musical, and having so much fun. What more can you ask for!
After 50 years of going to concerts, Genesis is in my top 10!!! Nuff said!!!
Genesis: fuck, we have not a super iconic frontman and singer anymore.
Phillip Collins: hold my drum.
Phill Collins: I can feel it's coming in the air tonight
For a moment I think they were better until the dross they turned out in the 80’s
@@Robcatist
To be honest, alot of bands from the 70s did a 180 and released not so good albums :p
@@bastrixer like with jethro tull. Broadsword was cool, but then Ian went full Synthesizer inthusiast.😅
We got Bruford.
These most wonderful and talented musicians have been part of the best albums in the history of rock!!! Wow!!!
Agree. What these days could compare? There's a band in my city pretty good called the High Horses. Very good live. Check them out.
Amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! these people should be eternal.
bill on drums, didn't know he played with genesis! GREAT
Love Peter Gabriel. Love Genesis era with Collins; underrated genius.
3:20 you look over, and PC is going crazy with his tambourine! One of the best moments in the music industry...
Is much respect as I have for Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins voice was just outstanding. Just amazing. One of the best voices in rock history and not to mention one of the most recognizable voices too
The sheer talent of this music is flabbergasting. Simply the most of that era could offer!
Saw this tour. Excellent...
I could listen to Bruford keep time forever. The sound of his snare crack is unlike everyone else.
Phil rockin the shit out of that tambourine!!
Sadly missed King Gabriel!!! Long live the King !!!!!
Sadly missed King Gabriel long live the King!!!!!
Long way I prefer Phil Collins’ version than Peter Gabriel’s. PG is histrionic, arty, intellectual and experimental. On the other hand Phil singing and playing this song is just perfection and fun
Phill Collins is an excellent performer.
He’s actually scared, nervous and pressured live when Gabriel left because he’s not like him and he does not know what to say in between. Looked like he turned out fine and was an amazing performer.
El más alto nivel de Rock Progresivo...Parecen divertirse con sus talentos individuales como músicos. Tienen el arte de improvisar mientras van desarrollan el tema. Arte que no poseen los supuestos músicos de hoy. Demasiada maestria y calidad. Mis respetos para Genenis...
I wish they kept this lineup. At this point they were unbeatable. So much talent.
With bonus Bill Bruford on drums. Superb
geffel Niki astria
Bruford...one of a kind....
At the time of 'Seconds out"... recorded in Paris. Il was there !
Legend
Absolutely; what a pity that Genesis did not have room for him as a permanent band member.
That Rutherford´s bass line is just......AWESOME!!!!!
música de Juan gbtirl gbtiel
de Peter Gabriel
Looks like Nicky Wire
Emanuel Rodríguez there is a live version of fountain of salmacis from Belgian TV on UA-cam somewhere, he’s awesome,
@@SocialSpit I had been blamed very often in the past cause I play a similar bass guitar style such as Mr. Rutherford does with Genisis. I think there is some truth in it for beeing underrated
Bill Bruford and Phill Collins are epic.
I was blown away when Phil does that stuff with the tambourine. Never saw him do that before. Very cool!
"When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench, I can always hear them talk..."
Reminds me my childhood in Rio
& mine in Tripoli.
The tambourine dance is epic!
+Bruno Cisi like Mary Poppins lol
Tambourine solo, let's be realistic.
Very Vaudevillian touch there.
Bruno Cisi grandiose Collins
Bruno Cisi Phill does it good 😊💚🎶
ONE OF THE MOST FANTASTIC MUSIC FROM 70'S🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Oh oui ! 😄
Steve Hackett amazing on guitar±!
What a rare treat to see Bill Bruford live with Genesis. Good stuff !!.
Can't make up my mind who's a better drummer: they are both amazing!
Mike Paul
Yeah, I saw this line up live, in 1979, in the UK.
Loved it, that Bill played with them.
How totally HUGE is this?? It quickens the pulse. This is what it's all about folks. Brufford on the drums too, what a legend!
Ppp
I came for the Bruford.
Bruford Like a robot .....Amazing....👏🙌🙇🏻♂️
I love this Trespass reference at 5:12
Thanks Tony Banks
How lively & energetic he was once upon a time Sir Phil Collins. Now after his surgery, it's so sad to hear he's not allowed to play the drums. I pray he has a recovery and makes a good comeback. Bless Sir Phil Collins, Bless Genesis for their wonderful music !
Well...it's not that he is not allowed to play drums anymore. He physically cannot do it.
@@BlueEyes-gp8lg I hear ya pal. Either way we don't get to see him drum anymore. Well but at least he still sings 👍
@@sandeepsreehari9188 Hm... He's too old and in a bad shape now. It's a miracle that he even got up on stage for the last solo and Genesis tour.😬
I read that while the band was on tour in 2007 after an accident of some sorts, is when Phil began his decline with his health. Seeing their last and final concert in March of 2022 with Phil singing from a chair was sad. All good things must come to an end.
A few years down the road from yo comment .. he’s really in bad shape now so sad for all his former glory days of genesis robert plant and others he played for not to mention his solo work… here’s to ya Phil!!
Mike never got the recognition he deserved. awesome player.
Dennis O'Brien I think he was held in the highest of esteem by all Genesis fans and Mike and the mechanics!
@Wicker Billy Where did anyone say underated, I can't find that part!
He wasn't a shredder but he always played what was appropriate for the song.
Restraint is rare in a musician....just ask the groupies......
No he never has, one of the vastly underrated bass players of all time. For doubters let them listen to this and No Reply At All and they'll see for themselves.
he did in england back in the day
Genesis were integral in shaping me creatively as a writer and artist as a teenage. I was 15 in 1976. Genesis are a huge influence in my life, past, present and future.
i love the style Bruford brought to them at this time and place
That Bruford snare sound amazing!!!
effortless vocals from Phil what a legend he is and a great swing to this version so funky i love it
yes it is funky - despite all those critics and fans who insist the prog is not for dancing - when needed these guys kick a groove
Courtesy of Mr. Bruford, who could swing a rusty gate if needed. Gave a kick in the ass to these guys.
@@joesantamaria5874 Bill B was fun to hear/watch in this - but have you actually HEARD 1970s Genesis (or even 80s/90s)?!?
Phil steps out from behind his drum kit at 3:20 here and does something with his tambourine that still amazes me to this day. Keeping perfect time for his band, he does it like this, it doesn't last long, but check him out, so amazing. 💪💪

Brilliant live track and still listening to this great music in February 2023 :)
My head just exploded seeing Phil Collins and Bill Bruford on stage at the same time.
BOOM
As good as he is, it’s obvious what an amazing find Chester was.
this is bill bruford on the drums though
Agreed… soon enough Phil would go to see weather report… and find Chester!…x bill has a laid back groove and I can well imagine the band felt safe with him, who could replace Phil anyway!
This probably the best performance of this song I ever seen so much energy.
Paul Huerta damn straight!!!
It's grotesque... This was never a great song, but Peter managed to raise it to another level. Phil just knocks it back down.
@@trespasser121 I think that's unfair, it's not a bad song at all and the story behind it is interesting and empathetic. But I agree that Peter Gabriel made it something very special indeed.
@@francismitchell2177 The refrain is quite mundane, but thinking about it , maybe it just fits the character. Peter makes it weird (he's good at that) which adds interest to this part. The instrumental intro sounds very good and a lot of interesting effects are used throughout the song. Still, I can only fully enjoy it when I look at Peter's live performance.
@@trespasser121 How could it possibly be "knocked back down," if it, in your opinion, it's not that great a song? It's a fun performance as it is, and what's wrong with that? And unless you're, like, 70, how would you know Peter Gabriel's live treatment of the song?
Bill Bruford worked so well with Genesis he really didnt recognized it but us fans loved it .Thanks Bill See you with King Crimsom with Adrian Belew,Tony Levin,Robert Fripp later on.
Bill Bruford and Phil Collins it doesn't get any better than that.
Unas de las mejores banda del mundo...para mi la escuchaba mi viejo, que hermoso recuerdo 👌👌❤🇦🇷🇦🇷👍👍
Great to see them all having such genuine good fun in this
I have goosebump every time I hear that hint of Stagnation...
this brings me back to my teenage years.listening to seconds out . and the lamb lies down on broadway
This is the BEST live performance I've ever seen. Especially Bill's drumming is so groovy even the others are also amazing...
I totally agree. How people go to see Ed Sheeran and think he's great when it's just him and a guitar I'll never know. The energy from a band like Genesis is something they can't comprehend.
Michael Jackson has the best live performances
My favorite Genesis song with a bonus tambourine dance!
The Genesis Theme Song-played at all their concerts
My God! I dare Bieber's followers to remember any of his tunes 40 years from now! Because We know what we like and we like what we know. Long live Genesis forever!
hahaha ! ...Happily i was not still there on Earth to can bear that ugliness ! ^^
"YEEHAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Let’s be honest, people are forgetting him now XD
TIME CAPSULE MATERIAL....
Just stumbled across this: Bruford AND collins together. What an unbelievable combination. Both have such utterly unique voices on the kit...and so utterly unlike one another. Priceless.
How fit Mr. Collins is, vocally as well. One of the best versions of this song.
Totally agree
He's 26.
Peter Kroll yes indeed. I know people slag him off but he did a real good job on Trick and Then.
Best band in the world, having fun....perfect!
Sublime times that will never be the same again ..
I'm fucking blown away. The level of musicianship is astronomical.
Bill Bruford!! I could listen to him laying that groove all night !
With all due respect to Peter Gabriel, this IMO, is Genesis at their peak. They never sounded better as a live unit than here. Such a tight sounding, well oiled machine.
Cutty completely agree 👍 and well put.
Fuck yeah! No era of Genesis can touch this!!
Phil Collins a man who wears many hats😊
I really love this song and this show! It was 41 years ago. Maybe was the best Genesis line-up!
Totally agree and one of the best concerts and the first tour since Peter left..
Definitely
Never gets old.
Wow, what a brief moment in time! After Gabriel had left, but Hackett was still with them, and Bill Bruford joining in on the drums. And you see so much of what they would continue to use in concerts for years to come. The interplay between Collins and Rutherford, for example, the extended bit at the end of the song that would eventually become a medley, and of course, Phil playing around with the tambourine!
Some of the best music ever!
THE greatest band!! So long... it's been an AMAZING 48 year run! Thank you for all the INCREDIBLE music and memories!! 🙏❤
This might be the best version I've seen of this track ... it certainly takes me to a happy place, especially when Mike Rutherford appears to be thrown in at 2:40
Listen to the version on "Seconds Out" . LOUD. I think it's better than this one.
Piece of History.
The best ever performed by my beloved fellow guys! First, Phil, then, Bill and after Chester!! Wow! I will always love you guys! I saw you live so many times, and you made me so fucking happy! Thanks for eternity! God bless you all!
Bruford in the house...YAY!!!!
Oh Lord, THAT BASS LINE!!! Great rhythm, gotta play again.
My favourite band of all time. Great tunes, great musicians, great lyrics. They take me to places no other band can. Outstanding.
I love the sneaky little nod to "Stagnation" by Tony Banks around 5:13. Such an iconic band, and Bruford is icing on the cake here!
Christian Heiney “then let us drink.....”
not sure about sneaky, considering a packed theater of fans, but it so soothing.
@Rodzilla Phil did sing "White Mountain" on the tour, and he did "The Knife" a few times.
I dind't noticed It the first time!!
Genesis with Bill Bruford!!!!
Bruford was outstanding ....by far the prog drummer of choice..injected talent into Genesis when PG left. When Hackett left it became a pop band
I agree.
It's funny to see the fabled *That Guy* Genesis fan out in the wild.
Went to see them Manchester appollo ,when I was 16,62 now ,still great !!!!
Who could have thought that Collins would go on to be THE voice of an entire decade, the 80s. From beginning to end, Collins’ voice was ever present in the 80s.
The 80s: _Lived ‘em. Loved ‘em. Miss ‘em._
Micheal Jackson was the voice of the 80s
It was a wonderful time Proud to be a part of this
Bill Bruford and Phil Collins on drums is my dream come true.
Two of my favorite drummers on stage at the same time is incredible.

It will never get better
Mais c'est un trésor ça!!! MERCI! Et puis, toujours ce bonheur de regarder Phil....
little did they know that Phil would dominate the 80s the way he did.
Utterly class, lyrics, rythm etc.... imagine this at Glastonbury as a finale!!!
