  • Give me any song recomposed with a piano rendition and I feel at home (check out my Rammstein reaction for "Mein Herz Brennt" to see what I mean!) So when I heard BABYMETAL and Su-Metal sang "Monochrome" with a full piano rendition, I had to check it out!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to BABYMETAL performing "Monochrome" for the first time.

During BABYMETAL's year-long hiatus last year, Su said, "I was singing 8 to 10 hours a day because I didn't have to worry about my throat." The girl who loved to sing more than anyone else has become a beautiful young lady who loves to sing more than anyone else. Her singing has always been pure musical joy.

This was released just before they announced the new third member Momoko. It’s almost a final goodbye to Yui with the three hooded figures in white holding hands referring to the Karate music video of Su, Moa and Yui. The message of which is fighting through difficult times, pulling yourself up and moving on, which is exactly what they’ve had to do the last 5 years without her.
Then they released the second First Take video soon after the announcement which included Momoko as the new third member. Almost as a welcoming for her after the goodbye to Yui. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

You know, funny as it sounds, that is really what they were, to begin with. All the members were Sakura Gakuin, as a spin-off. They have all said that they had never listened to metal before. Kawaii Metal was a gimmick. Three young girls singing J-pop songs to heavy metal riffs. I mean when you think about it, there is no way that could work. Nobody knew they would catch on as quickly as they did. I am sure it was as much of a surprise to Toy Factory. In fact, the band was originally supposed to dissolve when Su graduated middle school and subsequently Sukura Gakuin. It was after the success of Ijime, Dame, Zettai that management decided not to dissolve the band.
So yeah, it was a gimmick band at first, but the gimmick worked. The girls grew into the music and made it something more. So well that they are now a multi-award-winning group.

    • @mrz80
      @mrz80 9 місяців тому +1

It kind of was a gimmick initially - how can we add a new twist to a teen idol group? How about headbanging metal? They initially toured with a "band" miming the music. It didn't gel into something more for a while. BabyMetal's kind of in a category all their own now, and the girls' vocal prowess keeps growing. Su's a crackerjack vocalist already and has the potential to be absolutely legendary ten, twenty years down the road. People will be going to her shows and telling each other, "Yeah, I remember seeing her when she was just a teenager and she was amazing even then!" :D

Su, Moa, and Yui were practically born for music and dance together in school. They grew up together in Babymetal throughout their childhood and adolescence. The trio's separation must not have been easy. Of course, there were replacements. But naturally, Su and Moa miss the initial phase. They succeeded in a predominantly male industry as young Asian girls singing in Japanese. Imagine how difficult this must have been. While other children and teenagers dreamed of singing, Su, Moa, and Yui were already performing live for immense crowds at European and North American heavy and thrash metal festivals alongside famous bands. I believe that this heroic and sensitive side of Babymetal is unique. These images remind me of that. It's a little sad. Yui is gone. Su and Moa remain. Mikio, the great lead guitarist, passed away almost around the same time. They are winners. They probably imagined a teenage audience, but impressively, they made and continue to make many adult heavy metal fans happy in different countries. I'm not a parent, but I'm very proud of them. I wish them success and happiness. They deserve it. 🦊🦊🦊

I know almost nothing about singing, but even for me it's easy to notice Su's clear enunciation. For a beginner in Japanese it's very noticeable how much easier her words are to understand compared to most singers or even speakers. Seeing her that close, It's obvious that that's no coincidence, she really puts a lot of care and effort in the shaping of her mouth.
And even in this reduced setting, I find it interesting how Su manages to pull us in with her mannerism. She is born to entertain. But most importantly, her voice simply has such an amazingly beautiful sound. Combined with the emotion in this song, it's perfect. I have watched this video dozens of times since its release, and not a single time has it failed to bring tears to my eyes.

I would assume in all the time she had access to best vocal coaches, choreographers and probably even fitness trainers Japan has to offer (and as this is quite some big industry, I sure they have pretty good ones). At to that they ridiculous work ethic they have to go threw and the tough selection process, it is hardly a surprise she is that great now. Su and Moa are still young but they have over a decade of singing experience each. As I said in the live chat, you should look up to Babymetal's Headbangerrrr with Moametal singing. She only sings the last part of the song but you'll hear her beautiful and strong voice. She's not a belter like Su, but she sings beautifully.

I rarely get goosebumps from a song but this is just pure magic. And it's also one of the best things about Babymetal because regardless if one of their songs is super heavy or stripped down like this, they never fail to leave you in a happy mood. That's the beauty of these girls and their band of amazing musicians, their music transcends language barriers and brings people together to fully enjoy it for what it is.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。Vowels stand out more in Japanese than any other languages, I believe. The five vowels "a, i, u ,e, o" are the first letters to pronounce and learn for infants.
The girls proved that they can do anything. They have forced people to headbang with their heavy music and sharp choreo. Now they can depict various images by just singing and project them into the listeners' brain to move people emotionally. Thank you BABYMETAL. And thank you Koba, the BM producer, for your serendipity. Some 13 years ago, you certainly discovered something amazing and sacred for us. Speaking of the three figures in white hood adding some background vocals, they are certainly homage to BM's girlhood with original three girls.

She just does it perfectly and it always gives me the shivers. Like you would expect any other singers voice to give out or cut the note or go down because they cant hold it or sing it, but instead she goes even harder and its still crystal clear. Nice reaction. Babymetal still finding ways to surprise even their hardcore fans. What you just witness was a small miracle. Both Su and Moa standing still while singing has rarely if ever been seen. Astonishing for them since they've been at this for over ten years. And the results are outstanding. I miss the dancing though and Moa's smile. Since this was performed all at once it would seem Moa was standing directly across from Su. Which is why IMO Su keeps looking up. One smirk or full-on smile from Moa and this one take would be very different. Moa can make anyone smile and laugh. It's one of her Super Moa Chan powers. In concert she's been known to use this on Su and go into funny face challenges with the drummer. Wish they would go back to the face paint so they could do that again. Moa said that when Su sings it's like an angel came down. Moa said that years ago. We knew Su was good, but Su proved just how good she really is with this one. The thing that impresses folks about Su's vocals is her ability to convey emotion through music. And she goes straight to the note. Doesn't fish for it or sing a thousand notes before she gets there. Clear and clean are her vocals. Part of that has always been her pronunciation. Strong is Su in the way of song. Which is why Babymetal was built around her. For Babymetal this is the way.

I know the last Babymetal song you listened to was Akatsuki, but if you like hearing them stripped down like this, you should consider giving _Akatsuki - Unfinished Version_ a try. Same deal. A one-time performance of a piano and strings arrangement, focusing more on Su's vocals. And she delivers it with even more emotion than she did Monochrome here on the First Take. Except she's almost 10 years younger and singing it on stage as the penultimate song of the evening. There are many a video on UA-cam with big bearded men crying their hearts out to that performance. And you'll notice an almost complete lack of vibrato back then. This version of Monochrome is actually the most amount of vibrato I have ever heard her use. I really like that she keeps mixing it up. Give songs like _BxMxC_ or _Shanti, Shanti, Shanti_ a try if you want to hear her doing something a bit different 🙂

A small factoid about Japanese, that I remember from high school (20+ years ago), is that spoken Japanese and sung Japanese have different pronunciation rules. Specially when you are singing Japanese you are supposed to pronounce all parts of all syllables. So no silent letters or muted sounds. That is likely a large part of why the vowels are so clears.

    Monochrome By Babymetal:-
It's really atmospheric which I like. Divine Attack brought the hype and Monochrome brought beautiful vibes. The next single will bring the heavy vibes I hope.
Well, this song certainly shows that the few second snippets don't really spoil or give away the songs at all. The chorus with the is catchy, but the drum riffs are the jam for me upon first couple of listens. Since the snippets don't reveal the songs, I'm wondering if the five songs that will be released aren't gonna reveal the final album as a concept album, once released and listened to in full and in sequence, as most concept albums are meant to be listened to. Being that this album is conceptual, and should probably be listened to as a whole and in order, this could be a fun slow-burn reveal to. As of now only two original Babymetal are in the current status, Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal, Main Vocalist) & Moa Kikuchi (Moametal, Backing Vocals). The third member of Babymetal will be announced soon.

Both have been performing on stage for almost their entire lives. Japan takes the Arts very seriously, recognizing talent early. Su's early vocal coach(s) must have seen her talent and worked to ensure her voice developed within her range with precise pronunciation. One of the first thing she does with new songs is to work on her breath control with the dance.
FYI, Moa now creates the major steps/movements for new songs with their long time choreographer, Mikikometal coming in to "Fine Tune" the basic dance.

Thank you for another wonderful reaction. It is an absolute gift to be able to listen to the analysis of someone with your depth of knowledge. I think that you would enjoy, BABYMETAL - Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (OFFICIAL), which showcases other strengths of Babymetal and the Kami Band. All the best.

Three of my favorite women on UA-cam in one video!? Heck yeah! I hope you do the visualizer version of Monochrome next! The subtext of this song, with Suzuka being from Hiroshima, adds so much to the emotion of this song.

I'm so glad they released this as a single, it would have been criminal not to! Babymetal also have one other song they did in this style... You want more of these First Takes? They did one called The One. It's an unfinished version of the song that's on the album, but it's a piano version the same as Monochrome here. Su sings in English too, so you can hear how she sounds much more clearly when doing so. Another awesome showcase of Su's incredible voice.

What a great reaction but more particularly, what a great analysis. F1rst take is such a good way to hear a vocalists voice. This particular video really shows us how good Sue is as a vocalist. It also shows us how well Moa can sing. The other F1rst Take video they did for "The One" has received criticism because people say it has been adjusted in post. Personally I don't care about that, we still get to hear Sue's beautiful voice and get some idea of what they sound like with Momoco's ( Momometal ) voice included. Looking forward to your video about "The One" performed on F1rst Take.

Her voice is both powerful and so full of emotion. I have listened to this song dozens of times, and it moves me to tears every time.
The funny thing is that the regular metal version of this song is almost uplifting and joyful (and Suzuka herself always said she considers this an almost happy song, and she was surprised most people consider it a sorrowful ballad). But this piano version really is an emotional gut punch to me.

yes the sound of su-metal always gives me chills and awe.
and the moa-metal back vocals are always good too. but here I really like METAL KINGDOM where the suu-metal sound here is so firm and loud.

I rediscovered the wonderfulness of BABYMETAL by you.
Su voice is the appearance which is laser.
    Her voice is so powerful.
    I also consent to laser.

i love Babymetal and everything they stand for. Su-Metal's voice is amazing in so many ways, and shes one of my alltime favorite singers. i would love to hear what you have to say about "no rain, no rainbow" which like this one is a very emotional preformence that really focuses on the vocals. .

It's strange to say, but she phrases and uses vibrato EXACTLY the way I do as a Lead Trumpet player and soloist. It's really interesting to me, since I've not heard anyone else sing quite like that!

We hold a pure tone, moving in dynamics but only a hint of vibrato at the end for intensity...
