An important fact: Every three years there is the ‘Congress of the Leaders of the World and Traditional Religions’ who meet in Dimash’s home city. This Congress reports directly back to the United Nations and the final message at the end of ‘The Story of One Sky’ was a quote from the report submitted in 2019. In September 2022 Dimash was invited to perform at the ‘Seventh Congress of the Leaders of the World and Traditional Religions’ and actually premiered (singing ‘live’) ‘The Story of One Sky’ to over one hundred religious leaders at this ‘closed’ event. These leaders responded with a standing ovation and referred to ‘One Sky’ as the unofficial anthem of the event. The following day Dimash was presented to the Pope and was given a medal and received a blessing from the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Whamad el-Tayeb.
Therefore, choosing both the quote at the end of the the MV and what he chooses to do in the ‘vocalise’ section of the song then becomes, to me anyway, more poignant and powerful. In the ‘vocalise’ there is,at the very least, the Muslim call to prayer, the Jewish shofar, the Om of Buddhism and Hinduism and the bells of the Christian church so he has woven musical references of the world’s faiths into one - WOW!

Dimash was the drowning boy. The general is the one who saved him. The girl in the beginning is the woman giving birth. She is the wife of Dimash's character. The child who was killed was their daughter.

Every time I have watched a reaction to this, I'm always hoping that they realize Dimash is the young boy drowning. I'm actually nervous when doing so. (That said Carl is so precise in making sure he breaks down Dimash's unbelievable vocals and trying to pay attention to what is a mini-movie does makes it harder)

No, the tallest boy is Dimash, the boy who saved the drowning boy. The height gives us the clue!

      @lindahake1666 2 місяці тому +16

@ suedouglas….Sorry, the smaller dark haired boy who is drowning is supposed to be Dimash. The older taller boy is Piper , the dictator to be. He is slender and has light eyes. Pretty sure you are out voted.

I believe that the "tallest boy" is the older one...hence he is taller at that time! There are various clues in the song that he grew up to become the general or dictator.
Such as, twice they show the general with the "friendship necklace" in his hand...the same way the taller boy was holding it while staring at the ocean in his youth...
Dimash's character, I feel, is the younger boy who was saved by the taller and older boy in the beginning of the MV. When that little boy grew up he became taller like Dimash 😍
Another clue that the little boy was Dimash is that at the time his character was dying/drowning in the end (the same way he was drowning in the beginning)...he was also thinking about himself and his wife as children when they were happy.
I may be wrong but that's what I think when I see this beautifully amazing masterpiece 🥰😥🎼💞

      @dihathaway7076 2 місяці тому +17

@@suedouglas5455 Sorry, but I would have thought this would not even be a question. Dimash’s character was the drowning boy. That’s the only way it makes sense. As others have pointed out, the taller boy never can bring himself to put on the necklace. He is bitter that the girl has chosen Dimash after she rejects the taller boy. All this is set up in the early scenes on the beach. When they grow up, Dimash and the girl have married and are still wearing their necklaces. The taller boy has become the “Piper” who keeps the necklace but never wears it. At the end, Dimash returns to the ocean where he started. Yes, Dimash is tall as an adult, but the other actor is tall as well. Also, as others have mentioned, he just could have been older at the time and therefore taller or Dimash’s character just grew into his height. That’s my take anyway.

Dimash and the English language....so many reactors get in a tangle about it.
Personally, I love all his idiosynchrascies, and hope he never gets to the point of having perfect English.
In foreign audiences, his English gets a bit more stretched than in English speaking audiences, and so I think he remembers more of our vowel and consonant sounds when he is surrounded by them.
He learns foreign song languages using phonetics, and when he was young he would retire to his bedroom for a week with each new song.
I doubt he has time for that now, so what he is presented with and how it is presented would be what we get to listen to.
For someone that is so popular in so many countries, and such diversity in language types, let alone idiosynchratic tones that he tries to adjust to.....I know that he has to have the highest IQ and probably a photographic memory to achieve such a high level of success as he does, plus supernatural help and perfectionist drive and focus.
But.... I hope he never loses his beautiful Dimashness and Kazakhness by raising his bar too high for those who should be Dears and should understand him better.

You could easily make one of the best , most outstanding speech writers, easily surpassing those who have spent all their lives learning to form perfect sentences ! You just naturally talk so very extremely eloquently and “accurately”, using exceptionally beautiful, elegant and precise words and such abundant use of a very wide range of vocabulary is commendable! I know this comment has nothing to do with your reaction and even your profession as a musician, but I just had to mention it! Maybe it impresses me so much more than others because English not being my first language, I automatically pay more attention to how people speak the language!🤷🏻‍♀️ peace

In The Story Of One Sky he composed and sang the whole soundtrack himself.
The video shows once again that Dimash is an absolute genius. In composing, in singing but also as an actor and as a storyteller. The powerful message conveyed by this video is more relevant today than ever. I think this video is mostly about the message. This message however, is for the first time more important than his vocal abilities. His voice is just the tool in this video. But simply unbelievable. His singing is indescribable and I don’t have the words to express it adequately. That's your job😅. But it is only the mediator of what this video is about. This is so heartbreaking and sad and an awesome masterpiece. Pure goosebumps. You probably have to see it more than once to understand it.
He worked on this composition for three years and also wrote the screenplay.
The premiere was on September 24, 2022.
As some have mentioned, this video should be seen by many people. It may be very brutal for some. But let’s not forget that for many, including children, this is everyday life in some countries. And Dimash relentlessly shows us how ugly war is. During his concerts he always tells the audience he loves all people in every country. He visited so many different counties with his concerts and he realized that there are no bad nations (only bad leaders).
And OMG he is such a phenomenal actor.
Dimash was the little boy who was drowning in the beginning and he gave the necklace to his childhood friend (and future leader) and the girl. The girl on the beach was his future wife. She was pregnant and in the end of the video she gave birth to her and Dimashs' (character) second child. The littel girl who was shot was Dimashs and her first daughter. When he came home and saw his daughter dead on the ground, he had to assume that his wife and unborn child were also killed. Desperation and maybe revenge has led him to kill his former friend. When I first saw the video, I was shocked. I didn't think he was going to shoot his friend. But in the end that all made sense. Dimash wanted to show what revenge can do. Violence always breeds violence, and because of this, not only is the leader dead, but so is Dimash. It was so heartbreaking to see Dimash drown at the end. Dimash in the last sequence of the video was the baby that was born and now as a grown man unites people of different nationalities and religions for peace.
In this video you can see how the main religions are represented mostly with his voice. Islam with the type of Arabic melisma (unfortunately I don't know the correct explanation for this type of singing), Buddhism with the monks and the enchanting "Om", Judaism with the shofar and the Christian church with the soprano singing, which often can be heard in churches.
If you want to know more about this video check out dimashnews. com
By the way, Dimash has received an award from Pope Francis personally at The Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions held in Kazakhstan on September 13, 2022. He performed the song there in connection with the congress before the premiere. Can you imagine, a Muslim receiving an award from the head of the Catholic Church. How wonderful is that🥰.
He also gave a speech at the first Central Asian Media Forum, in which he once again strongly advocated peace. But I#‘m afraid it i You can see it with English subtitles. ua-cam.com/video/2C55a3mvfPI/v-deo.htmlsi=99iF8ltfNARzaZAn
The official live version of his concert (on September 23, 2022 in front of 30,000 people from 68 different countries) is available on his channel, Almaty concert part 3 from minute 23:15 with a short speech in which he performed the song for the first time. You should definitely see this. There are subtitles in English
    ua-cam.com/video/YP1r9wlkmHU/v-deo.html
And he's been singing it in all his concerts ever since. But always a little different.
    Greetings and love from Germany👋❤️

You have done a MOST AMAZING dissection of this masterful work. As someone said, Dimash’s voice, while breathtaking, is secondary to the message he is conveying. What is so sad, is that this transpired between childhood friends. We see this happening all over the world. People have been massacred by their leaders. The people of any particular country, just want to live, care for their families, and give their children a safe place to dwell. Dimash shows the atrocities against humanity. We DO LIVE UNDER ONE SKY! We have the duty and responsibility to preserve not only our own life, but the life of our fellow humans!

Thank you!!! You did a spectacular job, not only with your insights but also by the way you laced them in throughout the short film.. However, there is one thing that astounds me is that very few reactors mention what a skilled actor Dimash has become. His acting abilities to me are stellar. I am the father of two grown daughters and the first time I watched the scene where Dimash realizes that his child has been brutally murdered did me in. At that moment I lost myself completely into the character, because I know that if I had been in that situation years ago I would have responded just like Dimash. There are many things I love, admire and respect about Dimash, but his ability to get totally in touch with his own truths coupled with his honesty is what i like the most. Whether singing a song or playing a part in a short film, Dimash does not "act", Dimash "becomes". All "A-level performers have this ability and it is what sets them apart from the "B-list" people. Over the seven years I have known about Dimash, I have never cried more. I have since come to realize that Dimash touches my soul, not just my heart (although the little "effer" can do that to me too lol). I apologize. I didn't mean to drone on for so long. I'll finish with this. Carl Joshua, you are excellent at what you do and I'm honored to have found you, particularly as it relates to one Dimash Qudaibergen!! Thank you.

I completely agree. Dimash is not playing. He becomes.
When I for the first time was watching the video, in Almaty, that moment, the moment when the camera focused on Dimash's face, when he saw his dead daughter, it hit me so hard. I have never felt the way I did, watching a movie, when he held his daughter in his arms. The bottomless, desperate crying... It was hurting me so badly and brought me back to the feelings I had when I found my fiancé dead. Although this took place more than twenty years ago and was a closed chapter.
Dimash is incredibly gifted in so many ways❤

You must do his live performance at the Almaty concert. He laid his entire soul on the stage 3 hours or more into the concert. Please do the version from the concert itself which he starts with a very heartfelt speech. The drone footage adds a lot as well. This was followed by El Amor En Ti with the 3 Dimashes on the 70' and 50' screens to give him a bit of a rest. People there said they were so stunned and emotional from The Story of One Sky they could hardly comprehend it being immediately followed by El Amor En Ti.
This is a LOT, as you said and there is such symbolism. The metal piece is a gnomon, the vertical portion of a sundial. The hole in the center allows the light to shine through so it can be used for navigation. The piper bent his and on his uniform there is no longer a hole. He has lost his moral compass. The people in the desert represent those from all religions who have fought and given their lives for peace, including Jesus. In this section Dimash is "singing" the world's great religions. Some interpret him at the end as the boy grown up. I am convinced Dimash gave his life and joined the others, marching toward the light. It is a LOT is pretty much an understatement.

❤❤❤ you are a wordsmith. this is definitely the most indepth and detailed reaction of this amazing MV, other than getting the two boys backwards, which I also did initially, to see and get so much out the video in first watch is pretty impressive. I was in Almaty and saw this live in 2022, and have seen it live in subsequent concerts, you should definitely check out the live performance, the Almaty one probably the best since it was his first performance in a live concert (other than performing for the pope early that month in Kazakhstan at the meeting of world religious leaders, but the MV was premiered the day after the Almaty concert), probably the fancam version by Vietnamese dears. It is hard not to cry at this song every time. There is a lot of movie making to talk about for this MV, and the symbolisms throughout, this is a DEEP MV. And I do believe Dimash showed all his vocal abilities up to that time in this song. And his acting, super too. Thank you for your reaction, ❤

Why do people think that 30 years have passed suddenly and the baby is now grown? I mean this genre calls for poetic license always- not logic. Can Dimash really sing metal screams underwater? No- it's license. I think even the stain on his shirt shows this is Dimash leading the way for peace, for the light, and if you have to then it's Dimash's ghost. Sorry, but this is a thing that many reactors say and yet I really did enjoy the attention you gave here.

What I see the most in this is the absolute senseless destruction of war. 3 children friends, happy, carefree and in the end both boys are dead, one even - driven by pain and loss - killing the one who once saved his life and while the girl survives, her life is in ruins - she lost her home, her husband, her daughter and yes, a former good friend. You could see how Dimash's character simply gives up after shooting his former friend, he is completely broken, he lost his child and must believe his wife and unborn child are probably dead as well. He is not trying to run or to fight, he just stands there waiting for the guards to kill him too. In a war even the winner looses so much, everyone looses... but we still did not learned the lesson apparently.

I believe the shorter boy who was drowning is meant to be Dimash. Partly because there is tension between the girl and the older boy - it "feels" like he tried to kiss her and she rejected him and then she ran back to Dimash. The older boy was alone staring out at the ocean and didn't put on the necklace, in fact crushed it a bit so it bent. So psychologically I don't think his character fits in with Dimash's and the older boy was the one to take that symbol (without the hole) and change it to one of dictatorship, war and power over others.

Hi, absolutely awesome reaction and analysis of this masterpiece from Dimash, you worked the story out very well but it was young Dimah who was drowning and saved by the boy who grew up to be the commander. when the chips were down Dimash knew who had saved his life but was intent on getting revenge for all the bad he had done and of course for killing his daughter. I highly recommend you to watch the live version from his Almaty concert which he performed the night before this MV was released. if you go to Dimashs channel, to the Almaty concert part 3 you can find the professional recording but there is a version that is a fancam but it is very good. I think it is just as emotional and gut wrenching as the MV and needless to say singing it live Dimash was phenomenal !! Heres the link if you fancy a watch :

The Story of One Sky: A new composition by Dimash Qudaibergen
    September 24, 2022
    6506
On September 23, the solo concert of Dimash in Almaty saw the premiere of his song “The Story of One Sky”. On September 24, at the artist’s fan meeting, the audience saw the MV to this composition for the first time.
This complicated composition with a variety of music themes and tricks is a result of three years of compositional work of Dimash Qudaibergen.
Today, at the Kazakh artist’s fan meeting with his fans, the audience saw the MV to this work for the first time. The film is based on a story written by Dimash, with his own screenplay.
The director, Alina Veripa, told about the creation of the music video for the new song.
The clip is divided into several parts. The first one is about childhood. The main character, his 2 friends, is connected by childhood stories and symbols of eternal friendship. One day, the friend saves the protagonist when he drowns. However, there is already competition in this children’s story, as the boys are in love with one girl, and she chooses one. The second experiences a kind of psychological breakdown and transfers the children’s problems into the adult world of totalitarianism and struggle.
By becoming president, the antagonist carries the idea of a saving war:
“Only war will lead us to peace. Only the strongest can find love in their hearts. You must be strong enough to give the world freedom. A world where every city, every home is one. We will lead all who are ready to begin this new life. Anyone who resists has no place with us. I choose freedom. The world is open before me, and I want to give it to you. War for the people is the way to unity.”
The main character also speaks of unity, of peace, but through the lens of kindness and love.
While fighting, he is confused. He is in shock, but he has to save his family - his pregnant wife (the very girl from his childhood) and his daughter. Once home, he is horrified by the picture of the dead and realizes that his family is also dead. After surviving this drama, he moves on to the antagonist to seek revenge.
However, the Protagonist’s wife survives with the help of people who know that she is the one who must give birth to a special boy who can save the world. These are people of different nationalities and faiths who have united for peace.
A parallel line of pilgrims are people of different religions, walking the hard path to some place of power where they could unite and discover the Heavenly Eye that would illuminate the world. By uniting, they create a common energy in which the protagonist’s son is born, as Hope and Faith for the Better. Their journey is a symbol of faith in general because it always goes through trials. When we go to the truth, we go through certain lessons, and our way to God is difficult, but it is only possible if we come together.
This clip is not about waru’s about peace. War here is a means of expressing the contrast of what happens when we lose love for one another. It is about the call to unite, to stop dividing each other along national, social, and religious lines in order to preserve life, love, friendship, and the land for our children. Dimash sings this live at all his recent concerts. He sang it at the concert in Dubai, just a few days after the death of his beloved grandfather who raised him. It was too much for him, and he sang it quite subdued.
You missed the fact that the little girl in the passage was shot. She was Dimash's daughter. The baby boy his wife delivered grew up to lead the pilgrims to the light ❤ you have the two boys mixed up, Dimash is the boy who was saved and who married the girl later, and they had 2 children. The taller boy who saves Dimash's character became the dictator. All this because he lost the girl!

With this video I discovered Dimash a few months ago, and I fell in love with his art. With this piece I felt a punch in my humanity, it confronted me with the question of "what am I doing in particular to save this one sky?" This young man, with the powerful images of him, the story of him, the music of him and oooh God!! That voice confronted me with that question in a forceful and beautiful way at the same time. That is the power of Dimash, he lets us enter his spirit, our own and always with that torrent of power and beauty.

Hellor friend! Thank you for your sincere reaction, you've got it figured out really well! When I first watched this MV, it broke me, I became very emotional, it was heart wrenching, to say the least!
Have you noticed that Dimash is the main solder right from the very beginning of the war scene, when he was walking under the overpass, also when he was shot in the arm, many people miss that?
Dimash has worked very hard for 3 years composing the music for this song, and around 20 days to make this MV. It turned out to be his most valuable MV, in the ideological sense, ever made, a real Masterpiece! I believe that Dimash deserves THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE for his selfless hard work and tireless efforts, not only for this MV, but for trying to bring the world together in love, peace, and harmony and through his many charities. He is a Legend in the making and will go down in History.
This is my breakdown of the story, as I see it:
This mini movie is full of symbolisms, it's the story of 3 youths, and the necklace which was created by the young Dimash and shared with his friends symbolizing lifelong friendship and unity. The boys both loved the same girl, but she loved Dimash, so the other boy grew resentful over time, started a war, using the symbol of the necklace given to him by his friend Dimash, as the crest on his army uniform.
    1) Dimash, was the boy drowning at the beginning and at the end.
    2) The Piper, is the one who saved Dimash, became the leader, and was killed by Dimash at the end.
    3) The young girl, who died in childbirth, became Dimash’s future wife, had two children together; a daughter who was killed by the Piper's army; and the birth of a son who inherited the necklace from his mother…, they were all affected by the war.
“People are the caravan…. Life is the way”: Dimash spoke these words in Kazakh, when he found his daughter dead.
For the symbolic aspects, Dimash is showing the different cultures and religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hindi, etc.), through throat singing, which is called the REQUIEM (mass for the souls of the dead), from different religions. The Pilgrim or (Shepard or a Wise Man) at the end of the video was Dimash’s baby boy, born in his image and grows up to guide the Representatives of different religions and race from different Nations to the light, for a new beginning living together in peace, tolerance, love, and harmony.
    I’M CHOSING LIFE!! 🙏🙏
See you in your next reaction. Love from Canada 💖

The only thing you got wrong was that the little boy who was drowning, the one with the black hair, was the little Dimash. So it adds to the story a little in that the dictator as a child actually saves the boy who would eventually go on to kill him.
But yes, it's a very powerful music video.

Thank you for the clarification and additional insight into the music video's narrative. It's indeed a powerful and thought-provoking story, enriched by the complexity of the characters' relationships and their intertwined fates. The symbolism of the dictator saving the boy who ultimately becomes his downfall adds another layer of depth to the overall message of the video. I appreciate you sharing these details, and I'm glad to hear that you found the music video impactful. It's a testament to Dimash's ability to convey profound themes through his art.

Even if you don't react to it, please watch his live version. It's incredible and impactful. After seeing the live, I don't watch the music video anymore, except it's you so I'll watch because I know I'll learn something listening to your reaction. Excellent you just said you might do a reaction to the live. I'd definitely watch that too.

This song is a "modern" multicultural interfaith Requiem (the traditional Requiem is a song for the Mass of the Dead in the Catholic Church. The best known requiem is by Mozart I think). The Requiem usually has 2 parts: one mourning death and the other celebrating life.
Dimash says in a low voice: Адам керуен, өмір жол. Man is a caravan, life is a road. (Kazakh proverb)
So for me, the caravan is his (and our) inner world. Religiosity is in us, the religious man dies when a part of the soldier (Dimash) dies when he finds his daughter dead. So when he seeks revenge, there's a storm. Death follows death: Piper dies but the soldier (Dimash) dies too. Death is not the answer. And so violence is not the way (You can murder the "bad guy" but if everybody thinks that violence is an answer, another "bad guy" will appear for sure.) And then we see that his son made a better decision... His son joins others in seeking peace. That is the final answer.
    Hug from Brazil 😍🇧🇷

Grat for 5K! I follow you since SOS, so I can predict that when you reach 10K, we will be lucky to see your left ear and arm in the screen. For you are as humbled as the grandfather of Woody Allen, who's cartridge with his coffin was following the people to the cemetery😅. You move out more and more, for you don't want to disturb your viewers with your face.😊

I might just become the mysterious narrator behind the screen, keeping the focus on the music and reactions without any distractions! 😆 Your humor and joy are contagious, and I couldn't be more grateful for your lighthearted presence in our Dimash community. Here's to many more laughs and milestones together! 🎉🥳

You must have been exhausted by the end of this. I'm pretty sure Dimash was the boy who was drowning. His friend who saved him (who was reluctant to take the necklace you Dimash made for all 3 of them) was the evil leader. I am SO HAPPY that YOU (as I knew you would) gave insights and reactions on the MANY different, and equally important, aspects of this incredible video and incredible musical artist. Be well. Oh... And you should DEFINITELY react to the live/concert version of this song!!

I thought you would enjoy this. This is really long and I get that you want to blow through it, however, it's by far the best explanation I have found. It was written by Heiderose Kober:
Dimash - Requiem: The Story of One Sky
This is subtitled "Requiem” but it is also a vision and a call to action. Dimash is steeped in sacred music and has a deep understanding of the mystic teachings and symbolism of the major world religions as well as Kazakh shamanism.
It is not by coincidence that the first performance of this work took place on September 14, 2022, at the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Kazakhstan. The written statement at the end of the video is directly from the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” signed jointly on February 4, 2019, by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad El-Tayeb. Dimash met and spoke with both men at the September meeting.
Everything Dimash does is intentional, and this piece has layers that would take a dissertation to unravel. I only touch on some of what struck me in the symbolism. The music is a dissertation all by itself.
The pendant is an interesting element. It is a gnomon from a maritime compass sundial. This triangular blade is attached to the sundial, casting a shadow on the sundial while the perforated pinhole projects the image of the sun onto the dial. It was used for both timekeeping and navigation, with the gnomon oriented to True North. (Thank you, Snarky Tart for that information).
In the MV, (the taller child) who later becomes the military commander, never puts on the necklace. After Dimash, (the drowning boy), gives his friend the pendant. The camera focuses on his hand and shows that his friend has bent the gnomon in anger over being rejected by the girl (later Dimash's Wife and the mother of his daughter who is killed). Thus bent, it can never be oriented to True North, and he has lost his moral l compass.
Later, we see a version of the gnomon as the military insignia on the uniforms of the commander and his soldiers, but distorted and without the hole that allows light to shine through rendering it useless as a compass. When we lose the original intent of a symbol by twisting it into something it is not or by just paying lip service, it no longer has any spiritual meaning. At best it becomes a useless prop, at worst it is used to mislead and manipulate people. Contemporary music is also present: With the phrase "We have passed the moment of Imagine," Dimash reminds us that we are past the sentiments evoked by the song "Imagine" by John Lennon.
It is time to stop dreaming about a world of peace and harmony. If we choose life, if we wish for peace, if we want a world without war for our children and grandchildren, we must act and take up the long hard path up the mountain towards the light. It is the only way.
The storyline is a very human one: we start as innocents until our hearts are broken, we fail, or our dreams are not realized. If in our pain and disappointment, we turn to anger and blame instead of acceptance, power instead of love, greed and envy instead of generosity, hatred instead of forgiveness, and revenge instead of justice, we sow the seeds for conflicts that can turn into war.
The Piper's call is seductive as it promises redress for our grievances, control over our circumstances, and power over those who thwarted us, and this appeals to our wounded ego. However, let's remember that the Piper is a symbolic figure of Death from the Middle Ages, often used as a metaphor for trusting and following charismatic but dangerous and malevolent leaders to certain death. Even if we resist, as the adult Dimash character does, we often employ the same methods and weaponry as the Piper, and thus those who fight back betray peace as well because peace cannot be won through violence.
That is the dilemma of those of us who did not start the war, who do not support the war, but are forced to respond in order to defend ourselves and those we love. How can we rid the world of evil without becoming what we fight against?
The burning sign "Waldenberg" is a reference to the end of WWII when the US Army destroyed the last of the resistance by the German Wehrmacht close to the end of the war in April 1945 in the part of Germany where I grew up. I have seen the aftermath of war as I was born a few years later when much of Germany was still in rubble. Waldenburg is only 28 miles from my hometown and was completely destroyed as you can see from the picture. Many of the dead in those bombed-out buildings were women and children. The good guys defeated evil but at what price?
War is not the answer. We must find better ways to keep evil in check. iowaculture.gov/.../American-troops-move-through the last movement is powerful: The cries over the loss of a beloved child and the cries of giving birth to new life are presented as a call-and-response grounded by a powerful Om chant that creates a sacred space, reminding us that death and birth are both sacraments and are interwoven in the tapestry of life.
Dimash's vocalization and the pilgrims representing world religions and religious leaders, past and present, walking together shift the narrative toward the final conflict and finally redemption. When Dimash’s character decides to avenge the murder of his daughter, his state of consciousness is reflected in the darkening sky with lightning bolts of anger accompanying the storm of his emotions that buffets the pilgrims and hinder progress. The fog of war obscures the light.
When he is killed after exacting retribution, he is dropped back into the "sacred womb" of Earth, the ocean of love and mercy, and is cleansed of the old hatreds and grievances that only bring more death and suffering.
He breaks the wheel of endless war and suffering by choosing life. Dimash's scream of “we’re choosing life” is that of giving birth: the old earthly consciousness of an eye for an eye has to die to make way for a new spiritual consciousness that embraces all life. Soul is breaking free to return to its natural state of love and purity as exemplified by the images of the children and the newborn baby.
The blowing of the shofar signals God's mercy for humankind when it turns from wrong to right: in the Zohar, the book of Jewish mysticism, it says: “When human beings repent of their sins, they blow the shofar on earth. Its sound ascends On High and awakens the heavenly shofar, and so mercy is aroused, and judgment is removed.”
Reborn as a leader for peace and love, Dimash's character in the form of his son becomes a spiritual guide for all of mankind on our shared journey up the mountain towards the light of God, however we may interpret or name the divine. We are all on the same path, even if our personal narratives, cultural heritage, race, and spiritual orientations are very different from one another. By focusing on our common destination rather than on our differences, we can walk together in peace and love and mutual respect.
Carl Jung wrote: “Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness's of other people. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely. Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams: who looks inside, awakes.”
This is what Dimash has done with this work; he has made the darkness conscious. We can only raise our individual and collective consciousness by bringing to light what needs to be healed in our lives and our world, and then we need to work together to restore wholeness to what is broken and bring about peace and unity, one step at a time. We don’t have to wait. We can start right now. As the hymn tells us: "Let there peace in the world, and let it begin with me." Baraka Bashad.
