  • There are few songs I have to stop the recording and move on, and this almost made the list. Dimash Kudaibergen's own screenplay here about peace brought on by war has such imagery and themes that makes me as a new mother pain. And that's what music is supposed to do, bring out emotion. Dimash does it again.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Dimash Kudaibergen for the first time, performing "The Story of One Sky”.

Also being a new mother, I too struggled to get through this song without breaking down into a sobbing hot mess of emotions. I think the cloaked version of Dimash at the end is the baby all grown up and leading a group of people to freedom.

When Dimash premiered this song at his concert he gave a speech prior to singing the song. I think that speech is important and gives context to the song and story:
"Many thanks dear friends, before I perform the next song, let me say a few words. Thank you very much.
We, the people sitting in this stadium, each of us is different, not totally alike one another, but we are all God's children, each of us with different talents.
And, as I mentioned just now, right now is a bad time. In fact, I am not satisfied with the present situation.
I have not seen how such situations evolved in the past, therefore I don't know what will happen next.
But many people are suffering today because of a few individuals, it's really true.
We, we the adults, consider ourselves to be "smarter" than the small children and innocents, but while we do our best to teach and educate our children,
we forget that we also have some things to learn from those children.
They are pure-hearted, kind, friendly, untainted and without egos and their love for people are pure. Young children have such qualities.
I started writing this song I'm about to perform, three years ago.
Generally speaking, my main purpose in writing this work is to call for peace in the world.
It's a small composition that has burst out from deep within my heart.
To tell you truth, many thanks to god and with your wishes I traveled to many parts of the world and met many different people during my tours.
One thing I understood is that if you look at ordinary people, there is no such thing as a bad nationality, there is no bad nationality!
I don't need to tell you what you already know about the reason for mentioning the topic of nationality here...
Let there be peace in the world, Let there be peace. Let there be no war.
Let no people, let no nationality, let no country suffer!
Because after all, ordinary individuals, ordinary people are not at fault.
The truth of the matter is, no ordinary person is guilty of starting a war!
That's why the next song I'll be performing in your honor is about our common fate under one sky, it's called "The Story of One Sky".
    Hope you like it."

When Dimash sings this live, for the first time, on stage at his stadium Almaty concert, the images on the screen behind him of actual war footage is even more horrific than the MV/Short film, and appropriately so. I think he is hitting us hard in order to communicate "Look, you can not stand by as passive observers! There are individuals who are actively and forcefully destroying peace and freedom around the world and hurting the innocent in their path; and if you want this to stop then you need to see it, feel it, hear it, and FACE IT and act bravely to STOP IT!!!!! Because such destructive "leaders" are counting on people to NOT pay attention, to not see it or feel it or FACE IT because the people don't want to have their emotions upset, they don't want "negativity", they don't want to be disturbed with reality, I don't want to see it, I don't want to see it........ they only want to be entertained and party....and that is an open door to what Dimash so brilliantly makes us painfully aware of thru his masterpiece The Story of One Sky.

Thank you, Elizabeth! I am a retired music teacher and the current music director of the Tempe Symphony Orchestra. When I retired, I was burning out on music after 52 years of essentially living in a non-stop world of music. After a year of having the orchestra as my only remaining connection to music, I began to look for a way to resuscitate my love of music. I happened upon your UA-cam channel by following a link after listening to Ann Wilson performing Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors. I instantly found myself feeling much like I did as a teenager discovering the power of music all over again. I love having you as one of my guides to different kinds of music with which I was unfamiliar. Through you, I fell in love with a capella music (especially Pentatonix), David Draiman, and most importantly Dimash! As thrilling as Dimash's range and technical prowess are, his passion and seemingly limitless depth of expression/musicality brings me to tears. Even after listening to many of his performances (more times than I care to admit), his power to draw me in never seems to wane. I am also learning to understand and appreciate the world of vocal music more than ever because of your gift; you integrate analysis and heartfelt emotion so perfectly. Thank you Elizabeth, for bring music back into my life in a way I believed was no longer possible.

Thank you. I know that this was difficult for you and it should be. That is the point of this masterpiece. I know that it was really hard to separate the visuals from the vocals because they all become one story. Dimash doesn't want us to put blinders on about what is happening in the world. This is all about going towards peace and away from dictators. The symbol on the necklaces is the gnomon, which is the main part of a sundial. Notice that the taller boy bends his and he grows to become the commander. He has lost his way. The drowning boy becomes the soldier (Dimash), the girl chooses him over the taller boy who saved his life. She marries the soldier and they have the little girl who is killed by the commander's soldiers. She is pregnant and is whisked away to an underground place to give birth to their baby boy. She dies in childbirth. The soldier seeks out his old friend with hatred because he caused his daughter's death and the war. He kills him and is then killed in return. He relives his life and screams 'we choose life'. He dies at the moment of his son's birth. The pilgrims are from ALL religions and are struggling toward the light and life and peace. The baby boy now wears the necklace from his mother, he becomes the robed leader of the pilgrims. He is also the soldier reincarnated and he is also Dimash who created this story to tell us. He is leading us to life and peace. The words at the end come from the conference on religions that Dimash 1st performed this song. The Pope was there and gave Dimash a commemorative medal for his work towards peace. Dimash gave everything to this incredible message. His vocals cut through to your soul. They are beautiful, emotional, and meaningful.

We need to shake up the world to do something for peace, what the average person can do is not give way to hatred and raise their children to do the same..

I declare this piece of music the best and most versatile composition EVER, especially when it comes to Dimash's vocals. The finesse and artistry of tSooS is one of a kind. Vocals are the best that mankind ever produced. Dimash, you are a genius for sure! Thank you for that BEAUTIFUL gift! I must have watched that video far more often than a hundred times now. Each and every time I cry. Not only because of that topic but on contrary because of the spectacular beauty of both composition and vocals. Absolutely out of this world! Awesome!

Vocally outstanding, I sort of got lost in the imagery and intensity of the video and, for reasons that I don't quite understand, ended up with my eyes tearing up. Powerful is, I think, an understatement. Geez, that vocal range and control is mind-blowing. Stunning.

Here is a few things to help understand all the aspects of the story of The Story of One Sky. It is subtitled "Requiem” but it is also a vision and a call to action. Dimash is steeped in sacred music and has a deep understanding of the mystic teachings and symbolism of the major world religions as well as Kazakh shamanism. It is not by coincidence that the first performance of this work took place on September 14, 2022, at the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Kazakhstan. The written statement at the end of the video is directly from the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together” signed jointly on February 4, 2019, by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad el-Tayeb. Dimash met and spoke with both men at the September meeting. Everything Dimash does is intentional, and this piece has layers that would take a dissertation to unravel. I only touch on some of what struck me in the symbolism. The music is a dissertation all by itself. The pendant is an interesting element. It is a gnomon from a maritime compass sundial. This triangular blade is attached to the sundial, casting a shadow on the sundial while the perforated pinhole projects the image of the sun onto the dial. It was used for both timekeeping and navigation, with the gnomon oriented to True North. In the MV, the child who later becomes the military commander never puts on the necklace. After Dimash, the boy, gives his friend the pendant, the camera focuses on his hand and shows that his friend has bent the gnomon in anger over being rejected by the girl. Thus bent, it can never be oriented to True North, and he has lost his moral compass. Later, we see a version of the gnomon, but distorted and without the hole that allows light to shine through, as the military insignia on the uniforms of the commander and his soldiers. Contemporary music is also present: With the phrase "We have passed the moment of Imagine," Dimash reminds us that we are past the sentiments evoked by the song "Imagine" by John Lennon. It is time to stop dreaming about a world of peace and harmony. If we choose life, if we wish for peace, if we want a world without war for our children and grandchildren, we must act and take up the long hard path up the mountain towards the light. It is the only way. The storyline is a very human one: we start as innocents until our hearts are broken, we fail, or our dreams are not realized. If in our pain and disappointment, we turn to anger and blame instead of acceptance, power instead of love, greed and envy instead of generosity, hatred instead of forgiveness, and revenge instead of justice, we sow the seeds for conflicts that can turn into war. The Piper's call is seductive as it promises redress for our grievances, control over our circumstances, and power over those who thwarted us, and this appeals to our wounded ego. However, let's remember that the Piper is a symbolic figure of Death from the Middle Ages, often used as a metaphor for trusting and following charismatic but dangerous and malevolent leaders to certain death. Even if we resist, as the adult Dimash character does, we often employ the same methods and weaponry as the Piper, and thus those who fight back betray peace as well because peace cannot be won through violence. That is the dilemma of those of us who did not start the war, who do not support the war, but are forced to respond in order to defend ourselves and those we love. How can we rid the world of evil without becoming what we fight against? The burning sign "Waldenberg" is a reference to the end of WWII when the US Army destroyed the last of the resistance by the German Wehrmacht to end the war in April 1945. Waldenburg was completely destroyed as you can see from the picture. Many of the dead in those bombed out buildings were women and children. The good guys defeated evil but at what price? iowaculture.gov/history/education/educator-resources/primary-source-sets/world-war-ii/american-troops-move-through The imagery of the denouement is powerful: The cries over the loss of a beloved child and the cries of his wife giving birth to new life are presented as a call-and-response grounded by a powerful Om chant that creates a sacred space, reminding us that death and life are both sacraments and are interwoven. Dimash's vocalization and the pilgrims representing world religions and religious leaders, past and present, walking together shift the narrative toward the final conflict and finally redemption. When Dimash’s character decides to avenge the murder of his daughter, his state of consciousness is reflected in the darkening sky with lightning bolts of anger accompanying the storm of his emotions that buffet the pilgrims. The fog of war obscures the light. When he is killed after exacting retribution, he is dropped back into the "sacred womb" of Earth, the ocean of love and mercy, and is cleansed of the old hatreds and grievances that only bring more death and suffering. He breaks the wheel of endless war and suffering by choosing life. Dimash's scream of “we’re choosing life” is that of giving birth: the old earthly consciousness of an eye for an eye has to die to make way for a new spiritual consciousness that embraces all life. Soul is breaking free to return to its natural state of love and purity as exemplified by the images of the children and the newborn baby. The blowing of the shofar signals God's mercy for humankind when it turns from wrong to right: in the Zohar, the book of Jewish mysticism, it says: “When human beings repent of their sins, they blow the shofar on earth. Its sound ascends On High and awakens the heavenly shofar, and so mercy is aroused and judgment is removed.” Reborn as a leader for peace and love, Dimash's character in the form of his son becomes a guide for all of mankind on our shared journey up the mountain towards the light of God, however we may interpret or name the divine. We are all on the same path, even if our personal narratives, cultural heritage, and spiritual orientations are very different from one another. By focusing on our common destination rather than on our differences, we can walk together in peace and love and mutual respect. Carl Jung wrote: “Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely. Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” This is what Dimash has done with this work; he has made the darkness conscious. We can only raise our individual and collective consciousness by bringing to light what needs to be healed in our lives and our world, and then we need to work together to restore wholeness to what is broken and bring about peace and unity, one step at a time. We don’t have to wait. We can start right now. As the hymn tells us: "Let there peace in the world, and let it begin with me." Baraka Bashad.

the film is based on a story written by Dimash with his own screenplay. (I worked on this piece for 3 years). Director Alina Veripya spoke about creating the music video for the new song: the clip is divided into several parts. The first is about childhood. The main character, two friends linked by childhood stories and symbols of eternal friendship. One day the friend saves the protagonist when he drowns. However, there is already competition in these children's story, where the boys love one girl and she chooses one. The second goes through a kind of psychological The disintegration and transformation of children's problems into an adult world of totalitarianism and struggle. When he becomes a commander, the opponent carries the idea of saving the war: the young boy who presents the tokens of friendship he made will marry the girl (Dimash). She will give birth. A baby girl (murdered) and a mother waiting for another baby. Friends were scattered, and the third friend became an enemy, friends are enemies, because of the war, It is shocking how the cry of true helplessness of a father embracing his murdered daughter is practically coupled with the cries of a woman in labor who brings a child into the traumatized world of soldier (Dimash). That he was searching for his family and that he had found the dead body of his daughter and I think believing that his pregnant wife had also died, and felt the death of life, he decides, as the only way out in that moment of uncontrollable pain is revenge. He killed the evil embodied in his opponent, and then was killed by soldiers' bullets. ,and when Dimash died, his son was born, and the mother died during childbirth. But the boy is saved by his society of different religions and races, he wears his mother's talisman. He will surely grow up and become a messenger of peace on earth, like a worthy son of his father.A symbol of a future without evil, without wars, a world moving towards peaceful coexistence. The light of hope and peace on earth,In a world without walls, without unfair constraints, without differences or contempt for different ethnic groups or nations because the supreme value above all is: love and peace We are all human beings, we share the same planet Earth, and we owe each other as "brothers" the respect for life. In the end, he joined with people of different races and religions from another era that touches the present and the future In a world without walls, without unfair constraints, without differences or contempt for different ethnic groups or nations because the supreme value above all is: love and peace We are all human beings, we share the same planet Earth, and we owe each other as "brothers" the respect for life. ,Piper represents the force Totalitarian, oppressor who is not alien to us and who understands that war is the way to make people free (real nonsense).Piper (is the name of a soldier's opponent, a soldier who only hates, annihilates and destroys. What a paradox for a friend who, in his childhood, saves soldier Dimash from drowning. But life is like this, full of changes, good and bad, Evil, war and contempt happen when we lose love for one another, and our way to God and making peace and love in the world is not difficult but possible if we work together for love and peace and stop wars, hate and contempt. It is about calling for cooperation, to save lives, love, friendship and the land of our children. “Art is a sacred message in life, and these are the true artists.. And the earth needs these reformers in their precious, true and immortal work for the sake of love and peace on earth..Thank God for his gifts

Elizabeth, congratulations on the birth of your child. Children certainly change our hearts and lives. We can be sensitive before having kids, but after… wow! I respect that you made it through this video. Dimash pulled out all the stops and told the story powerfully- vocally and visually. Truly a masterpiece. I torture myself to watch this to see others feel and understand the story along with hearing the incredible musicality of Dimash. The performance (there is a fancam from Almaty as well as the official video from the concert) in Almaty May be visually less disturbing, but every bit as powerful. After a marathon of emotions (and- as always - an intelligent and insightful analysis!), I trust that some serious cuddle time with your child was warranted! Prayers for peace from Canada!

We are divided into races, nations and religions, but all We are children of the same planet and we live under the same sky.
No holy book calls for the destruction of people. We must learn to be friends; it is impossible for a few adults to make millions of children suffer. The future of our planet, the future of people is in our hands, may there be peace in the world. We are children of a single home, of a single earth and of a single sky."

When I saw the video for the first time I couldn't stop crying because it expresses all my world pain.
Thanks for the great analysis, I was hoping that one day you would view this work of art with us.
The boy who played the savior became the dictator, the saved child then became Dimash the soldier, the young girl became his wife. The child that perished was their daughter, and the newborn was their son. The son was the hope for the future and Dimash in the end was the grown up son walking the path of peace.
Yes, as you have recognized, the video is intended to show the cruelty and senselessness of war. Perfect cycle of violence up to the act of revenge at the end.
This should not be our way, we should choose life.

We get that feeling because it is the purpose of this video, he wants to bring out your empathy and sadness of how emotional and painful it must be to go a similar situation ourselves. Dimash and the whole production have done their job well. BTW, this is my 1st time ever hearing Dimash. Amazing vocals! I did myself a favor, I watched the whole video 1st, and had to wait for while to listen to your reaction, because of the strentgh of its content. I value your reaction enough I made myself watch along with you. Bless you, your baby, and hubby.

I love your channel, Elizabeth! You bring such a rich combination of feeling, musical insights and vocal analysis. Your words at the end resonate so much with me. My focus for my channel is that Music Lights the World and brings us all together into a community of love and peace. Bravo to you for striving for the same end with your efforts. You are succeeding and I'm sure you're a great mother. My kids are all pretty much grown but I feel the same heightened concern when children are in danger or negatively impacted. I have reacted to close to 40 of Dimash's performances as well and this one hit especially hard. What a visual, vocal and universally impactful masterpiece. All the best to you and your family and your wonderful channel.

Dimash's son inherited the earthly mission to work for peace while Dimash entered the spiritual world to continue the efforts together with the saints from all faiths who came before.
