This film is a one of kind. It was made at a time when film makers trusted the intelligence of their audience. Beneath the farce is a compelling message about redemption and faith.
TNC is such a one off-as the exorcist should have been. Instead of repeating friedkin , Blatty is wise enough to make his own movie with a truly brilliant roster of talent in front of the camera. Witty profound unique. Great review
The Ninth Configuration is a fantastic film. I was lucky enough to see it decades ago when I was still very young and I was able to appreciate it even then. I'm glad it is now getting the praise it deserves. IT kind of got lost and discarded as a One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest clone which it is not but I can see how it could be thought of that way.
Just got round to this and so glad I did - hilarious and horrifying and a true midnight movie made by a true artist - thanks for this review John and opening my eyes to new (old) cinema x
I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but I do want to say the 9Th Configuration has one of the most beautiful, uplifting endings I've ever seen.
the 9th Configuration is so underrated, the balance of humour and drama is second to none. it also has such a heart wrenching scene it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Exorcist 3 is excellent too. i didn't know the Captain Cutshaw link. thank you for that and for the review.
Excellent commentary. I’ve counseled a number of combat veterans and always conclude by letting them know that if they live by the fantasy that God doesn’t exist, then there is no way to argue that anything is wrong.
The essence of suicide is you don't collect the insurance.. 😂😂😂😂😂 I read this book and saw this movie. Before cable TV you either had HBO or Select TV we had the latter and on late night Saturdays they played these types of movies. I was into it my sleepover friends? were snoring away... 😂 You surprised me again. 🎉🥰
I had something similar with late night sci-fi when we were kids lol Everyone else was snoring and I was watching Saturn 3 and Logan's Run lol I really like The Ninth Configuration book too, such a great writer and director I wish we'd seen more from him, but the two he did were great :)
I think they made a mistake when they didn't make this one sooner. I've never even heard of this movie, nor the book. I think most people haven't. I thought it was brilliant.
First time I saw the movie on tv, I thought it was a masterpiece and was deeply moved. I was appalled when I bought it on blu-ray years later to discover the ending was changed to Kane purposely taking his own life, slitting his wrists with the biker's knife under the blanket. It was just one shot that was changed, of Kane dropping the bloody knife, but it changes the whole complexion of the movie and the Kane character. It was a terrible choice by Blatty.
Thanks for watching. I know exactly what you mean, I had the same experience. Apparently there are several versions but I cant track all of them down, I have managed to see a few over the years, but not all. I agree, It does make a huge impact on the story, from what I can tell from interviews mainly with critic Mark Kermode is that Blatty chose to use the selfless act line and shoot the alternative knife drop ending, just incase audiences didn't understand that Kane had made the ultimate sacrifice, which to me was very clear to begin with from the scene of realisation in church and the very last image of the film lol one of the most moving endings in movie history. As you say I much prefer the ending when Kane dies from his injuries. Thanks again for watching and sharing your comments.
@@jwnj9716 wow, I stand corrected! I mixed it up with the much older Wilhelm scream, which comes from 1951, and is it’s popular competitor scream sound effect, although it’s stated that no one knows for sure where it originated, the consensus is that the 9th Configuration is the first known usage. You learn something new everyday 👍 This is one of my favorite all time movies, nice to know an interesting fact about it. The Wilhelm scream’s first known usage comes from a 1951 western, I believe called “Distant Thunder”, in case anyone is reading this and wondering about that one ☝🏼

And it failed lol

Great review
A really obscure movie that is impossible to pigeon-hole, but I would take it over every Exorcist sequel except III.
This movie passed me by. Not anymore. Thankyou, and you have a new subscriber.
A quirky romp until Stacey Keach turns up and scares the absolute living crap out of everyone. Love this movie.

@@tubian323 thanks for watching, I agree 100%
Of course, anyone can't forget about these new aftermath sequels of Friedkin's cinematic universe franchise.
1. Exorcist 8: "FAITHLESS" (2028)
2. Exorcist 9: "RESURGENCE" (2029)
3. Exorcist 10: "HERESIARCH" (2011)
4. Exorcist 11: "DESECRATION" (2034)

The film has so many fun characters with their weirdness. This might be the film where the famous "Howie" scream came from.
The Howie scream is much older, but was definitely used in this 😅
@@PortlandKennedy So where did it come from?

I mean it's definitely better than the actual exorcist 2, that might be the worst sequel ever made
To date i still like him hes sexy
