  • In todays film culture it goes without saying that Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky is counted among the greatest directors of cinema. His influence reaches out far a field to modern filmmakers such as Stephen Soderbergh who remade his film Solaris in 2002. It has been said by many including himself, that the cinema of Tarkovsky is the cinema of poetry and that his works are filled with visual metaphors, beautiful cinematography and poetic dialogue about the mysteries of the human condition and how it is our memories that make us human, and that these metaphors and poetic moments shadow the stories of Tarkovsky's works which are often deceptively simple, when we break them down into film form and narrative structure.
So, please join me as we take a deep dive into the filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and explain and analyse his classic 1972 sci-fi drama Solaris (1972).

This is by far the best essay I’ve ever seen on Solaris. Tarkovsky is my favourite filmmaker and I could listen to you talk about his work all day. Brilliant, man!

I saw some of this film on TV in the late 70's but was too young to understand it. Loads of Soviet films on Finnish TV at that time.

Awesome movie John, I love all of Tarkovsky's work but Solaris is his best imo. It is a pure mind melt but is so absorbing you cant look away despite its hefty runtime.

Cheers Kerri, it was the first one of his movies I ever saw so it holds a special in my heart. Yeah, the run time is long especially when I was a teenager, first copy I had on VHS came on two tapes! lol

I agree. Solaris is my favourite Tarkovsky (currently placed at no.6 in my personal favourite films of all time - Solaris is my no.9) 👍

Solaris is his best? I'm excited as I just received my Criterion edition of the movie. I saw it in my early youth (that's more than two decades ago) so I don't remember much of it. But I have always had Stalker in my collection, and feel compelled to revisit Tarkovsky's bleakly beautiful landscape every year.
