    Another interesting show guys!! Great on your contributions to theses releases. Beautiful photos and the re-pro Sun 45s are marvellous. I had the pleasure of working ( playing String bass) with Freddie Bell on a couple of dates in Germany and Switzerland in 1990 and again at a Rockin 50's Festival in the UK a number of years later. A very funny man and great entertainer. We still do his version of Hound Dog in our (The Jive Aces) live set.

    Probably your best presentation of any of your videos, Thus far, and for me, “Elvis at Sun” is the Holy Grail.
    I’ve often heard so many trash reviews amongst these releases, especially for being the “Grey Market” and I tend to disagree. I actually own five (5) titles from MRS and I’ve been blown away, not only from a sonic perspective, but also from the packaging.
    I actually still own three (3) of the original Sun singles, and I have pictures to prove it (LOL) , and I will never pay with them !!!
    Spectacular show, keep up the great work.

    After watching your 2 videos I decided to give these guys a chance, went with a safe choice: Elvis Presley Summer Festival 1970: The Rehearsals (3CD). Look forward to giving it a listen. Oh and my US #1 Singles box showed up, love the presentation and of course I ripped them to my PC and made a playlist. It flows quite well, decent sound too. The UK box is actually supposed to show up tomorrow. So then I can make a playlist for that, and one giant playlist combing all the singles, minus the duplicate.
    Again, sorry for the novel but love the channel. You two have opened my eyes to things like the Singles boxes and the Memphis Recording Service sets, so I am really grateful. Proud to be a member!

    Hi guys love your enthusiasm and love of Elvis music. Elvis did 60 takes of a song called; "Without You" while at SUN and as Elvis has said..."the record never came out". This song Sam Phillips asked him to do but Elvis could not get it to the Sam's satisfaction. "Rag Mop" was another song Elvis tried-out in the same session: these were before Bill & Scotty entered the scene. I am sure that Sam would have at least put both songs to tape. But the info on these two tracks is lacking in every Elvis Sessions Book that I have: even the brilliant Ernst Jorgensen "Elvis Presley A Life in Music: The Complete Recording Sessions" although that publication mentions the song "Without You" in passing. No one seems to know much about those two songs, and not many know that these two were even sung by Elvis. I have done my research on them but to no avail. Do you guy's know anything about them. Gee it would be nice to know the story behind them. Stay safe and go well.

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  Рік тому

      Hi, Terry! We actually talk about "Without You" on our video about the "A Boy From Tupelo" set - the demo was by a man named "Jimmy Sweeney, and was almost included on that set (his version can be found on UA-cam). Elvis likely didn't do 60 takes of it (it's likely he's referring to "Doncha Think It's Time" during the sessions for "Doin' The Best I Can"). That sit-down with Sam Phillips was just a test run with Elvis on guitar, and was likely recorded over. "Ragg Mopp" was perhaps tried but not recorded (or perhaps done live). Funny enough, I (this is Jamie) recorded both songs on my "Memphis Fire" album in 2006. (At least a verse of "Without You" and all of "Ragg Mopp") 😁

    Thank you

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  Рік тому +2

      Thanks, Levi! Best sound on Sun is going to be the "Boy From Tupelo" set from Sony Legacy - but MRS's "The Complete Works: 1953-1955" is very good, as well!
      (Don't forget to watch the full version of this on the Patreon page, since you're a member - there's even more info there!)

    • @johnheath1868
      @johnheath1868 Рік тому +3

      I want to qualify what Jamie said a little bit. There’s differing opinion on which Sun release is the best, but three are very good options. 1) The Boy From Tupelo (the smaller legacy release), probably has the best mix of good sound and completeness. 2) Elvis at Sun (the single disc from 2004) is probably the absolute cleanest source on the masters, and 3) The Book bound MRS edition of Sun Recordings, also has very good sound and while it’s less clean than Elvis At Sun on the masters, the versions of the masters they do have arguably sound more like the actual Sun singles. Like everything in the Elvis world, this isn’t nearly as simple as it should be.

    • @Rock4UNow
      @Rock4UNow Рік тому +3

      @@johnheath1868 hi John for some reason my comments have been disappearing. I changed my keyboard to see if that was the problem. Thanks for breaking it down for me. I have a couple of original Sun Records, That's All Right 78 & Mystery Train 45 to compare them to. I love modern technology if it makes an improvement for the sake of having a nice alternative.
      My 1st will be Boy From Tupelo. They still have it at Barns & Noble here. Then the others if the prices are right ill order them.
      I know a lot of Elvis fans won't agree with me in saying this but last year's trip to Memphis during Elvis week my favorite part was Sun Studio even more than Graceland. There i said it 😁 Such sacred grounds, it all started there.

      @@Rock4UNow You’re not kidding. Sun just has that vibe that gives you goosebumps. It’s like the place breathes history. Elvis, Cash, Jerry Lee, Carl, Howlin Wolf, BB King, Junior Parker. A lot of great records were made there. If you ever get back to Memphis and haven’t gone already, I would take the time to go see the auditorium at Humes High School, too. It looks almost exactly as it did in 1953 and has much the same effect.

    The MRS Stuff is good and the addition of the books elevates the quality, I bought the Sun Masters one as I missed the FTD Tupelo first time round, when the mini version came out I sold the MRS one to part fund it. I no longer own any MRS (except Tupelos own) and only buy from Sony, my issue with MRS isn't that they are not official it is when they instantly release audio that Ernst has chased down and bought at a lower price, this will stop the main label buying unreleased material such as the 69 rehearsal.

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  Рік тому

      Hi, Steven! I can definitely understand that perspectice - though MRS is still very much a smaller market than Sony/FTD's, so that doesn't bother me as much as it would otherwise - and Sony is (generally, anyway) still the gold standard for sonic quality.
      On audio that hasn't been purchased by the official label yet, that's one of the other long-term missions of the EAP Society, so hopefully we can help with that in the future! 😁

    • @stevenholland8587
      @stevenholland8587 Рік тому +1

      @@EAPSociety thanks for the reply, yeah you can see Sony are not that bothered by MRS as they released the TTWII rehearsal to stop them dropping out of copyright, but MRS re-released them anyway. Does anyone even know who has the 69 stuff?

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  Рік тому

      That's a good point, Steven - and honestly, if that's why we're finally getting lots of complete content (just to keep it in copyright), I'm definitely happy with the result!

      You know, for some reason when you said "Complete Works," I was thinking Sony's "Complete Masters" - sorry about that! Jamie,
    Sorry to bother you again, but had another MRS question. If you have the 56 sessions box, which I have, is there any reason to search out the New York Studio One set? From my understanding, with the exception of the count in for One Sided Love Affair and the non Elvis bonus songs, everything that is on Studio One is on the 56 sessions set. If it wasn’t for the fact that these sets cost quite a bit of change, it wouldn’t matter I would just get both, but I just don’t see paying over a hundred dollars for a set that I already have 99% of. Thanks so much again for all you guys do!!!!

  • @GarryGomersall
    @GarryGomersall Рік тому +1

    MRS releases are great - but definitely “grey” and artificially create a remixed sound to justify initiating a new copyright period of another 50 years. Bottom line for me is whilst I love the content and am grateful for it being released the grey market has a damaging effect by cannobilising the market opportunity for “official” license owners to make money ….coupled with the general apathy or lack of investment in EOT and TTWII and CBS 1977 footage …we will likely never see an official release that does justice to Elvis’s memory. Coming back to the topic of MRS ( and FTD ) for that matter…all releases should be available to stream rather than on expensive CD packages….it simply limits access and encourages pirating of the CD. The business model for Elvis recorded works is essentially broken …and we have a Wild West and no centralised curation of his legacy. we are all poorer for that IMHO.

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  Рік тому

      Hi, Garry! I can understand that perspective, definitely, but I think grey market doesn't have as much affect as we might think - but that'll be a topic we cover a bit more in season 2, so I don't want to spoil too much. 100% agreed on apathy from companies on Elvis video, though - we've got first-hand knowledge that that's the case, or at least was. Hopefully the new movie helps to change that!
