It's weird, but under certain occasions that can legitimately happen (well not exactly but close). When I was 8 there was an error with the anesthetic when I had surgery. I remember _that_ the pain was maybe 3 or 4 times worse (hard to give a good estimate, but at least twice as bad as) the worst pain I was capable of conceiving of at the time. Today though, like I can talk about it completely straightfaced (27 now). There is no emotional impact thinking back to it at all, and while I can remember what the pain was like and where it was, I can't actually imagine the pain itself. It is a pretty strange feeling but that does happen.
So glad this is a satirical skit from the onion, because this is totally believable as the way someone in his position might respond to a shocking situation like that.
Lots of times when a loved one dies people don’t tell their co-workers so they won’t have to answer questions. They just need to work as a break from it all. No one at work knows.

The reason The Onion at its peak remains unparalleled, is because they nail every single delivery. Their characters weren't overtly over the top to "make a point". From the writing, to the performances and the editing, everything was top notch. Comedy sketches today are nowhere near that level, regardless of their political affiliation.

This is the first onion video that actually made me feel sad. Imagine not being able to mourn your wife and be with your children when such a terrible thing happens because you have to go to work.
It is his way of processing grief. He clearly in Denial mode of what happened. He is just shrugging is way off to work to find some stable structure. This is Pretty sad actually beyond sad to be honest.
I was 30 yrs old when my best friend, my hero, my father passed away… all I wanted to do when I got the news was go to work. I knew being home with my wife and kids was enough to break me down… it wasn’t until 3 months later when it finally hit me like a ton of bricks. I was down and out for 2 months straight after… my wife had to pick me back up… we all grieve differently… sometimes I wish I could be the one to fall apart right at the moment of receiving bad news… it takes me awhile to process everything.
This is how some people choose to mourn. By burying themselves in a professional persona and focusing on work instead. It's not the most healthy or effective method of defeating these emotions but it is very realistic escapism. I don't have experience in this type of grief but I have responded similarly to my own depression. Instead of actually confronting the matter it is a lot easier to bury yourself in routines and busy schedules of structured work. It can also be "healthier" than doing nothing or being alone in many cases. If you're alternative is wallowing in self pity because you don't know how to confront the issue or would otherwise choose not to, than people surrounded by people you know in familiar settings at least gives you access to support when you want it or are ready for it.
The thing about satire is that it's a hyperbolized account of a real issue, so while this story may be fictional, the message behind it is very real. Most men would rather suffer in silence by themselves than talk about it and let it out.

Honestly though, some people don't want to talk about what just happened and would rather have a normal day than be drowning in their grief. Thinking about it only makes it worse sometimes.
It makes it worse because it breaks the illusion that everything is fine and it "doesn't bother" them. They're too caught up in trying to control and suppress their emotions, when someone acknowledges how much pain they're hiding, they struggle to keep up the act. It's like you're testing them to see if they'll break, in their eyes. Which is why some people get really angry when you bring up a sad topic that's personal to them.

The most depressing part of this video is how the comments lead me to believe that people think so little of the world to think that this would actually happen. But I can't say I immediatley doubted its validity, which I want to consider as a good thing as well, seeing people give sympathy and trying to comfort someone because doubting them could make it hurt even worse. And props to the makers of this, absolutely spot on acting, and reactions from the crowd felt painfully real.

The way it pulls the morsel of truth in the joke from 10% to 80% makes it funnier in a way. It is funny that some viewers confuse it with being a real press conference. I would have preferred they pull up the satire, though. They could have had him reveal in a calm professional voice that he was actually in the accident and is giving the press conference with both his legs and genitalia recently severed from his body. He could add that due to a rare heart condition, he also is not taking any pain medication or treatment and is in physical agony.

The reason The Onion at its peak remains unparalleled, is because they nail every single delivery. Their characters weren't overtly over the top to "make a point".
From the writing, to the performances and the editing, everything was top notch.
Comedy sketches today are nowhere near that level, regardless of their political affiliation.

I went home and cried all along the way and when I was at home cried. Couldn’t sleep because I had nightmares. I don’t know how I could survive if I’m not pregnant with my baby and know that I have to carry her and give life to her. I was dying inside. But when I worked I had to hold myself and focusing on something else than my sorrow.

This is the first onion video that actually made me feel sad. Imagine not being able to mourn your wife and be with your children when such a terrible thing happens because you have to go to work.
It is his way of processing grief. He clearly in Denial mode of what happened. He is just shrugging is way off to work to find some stable structure. This is Pretty sad actually beyond sad to be honest.
I was 30 yrs old when my best friend, my hero, my father passed away… all I wanted to do when I got the news was go to work. I knew being home with my wife and kids was enough to break me down… it wasn’t until 3 months later when it finally hit me like a ton of bricks. I was down and out for 2 months straight after… my wife had to pick me back up… we all grieve differently… sometimes I wish I could be the one to fall apart right at the moment of receiving bad news… it takes me awhile to process everything.
This is how some people choose to mourn. By burying themselves in a professional persona and focusing on work instead. It's not the most healthy or effective method of defeating these emotions but it is very realistic escapism.
I don't have experience in this type of grief but I have responded similarly to my own depression. Instead of actually confronting the matter it is a lot easier to bury yourself in routines and busy schedules of structured work. It can also be "healthier" than doing nothing or being alone in many cases. If you're alternative is wallowing in self pity because you don't know how to confront the issue or would otherwise choose not to, than people surrounded by people you know in familiar settings at least gives you access to support when you want it or are ready for it.
where I live you get 2 days off when a close family member dies.

Honestly though, some people don't want to talk about what just happened and would rather have a normal day than be drowning in their grief. Thinking about it only makes it worse sometimes.
It makes it worse because it breaks the illusion that everything is fine and it "doesn't bother" them. They're too caught up in trying to control and suppress their emotions, when someone acknowledges how much pain they're hiding, they struggle to keep up the act. It's like you're testing them to see if they'll break, in their eyes. Which is why some people get really angry when you bring up a sad topic that's personal to them.

The most depressing part of this video is how the comments lead me to believe that people think so little of the world to think that this would actually happen. But I can't say I immediatley doubted its validity, which I want to consider as a good thing as well, seeing people give sympathy and trying to comfort someone because doubting them could make it hurt even worse. And props to the makers of this, absolutely spot on acting, and reactions from the crowd felt painfully real.

The way it pulls the morsel of truth in the joke from 10% to 80% makes it funnier in a way. It is funny that some viewers confuse it with being a real press conference. I would have preferred they pull up the satire, though. They could have had him reveal in a calm professional voice that he was actually in the accident and is giving the press conference with both his legs and genitalia recently severed from his body. He could add that due to a rare heart condition, he also is not taking any pain medication or treatment and is in physical agony.
