This had a lot of great info. We've been thinking about ducks but hadn't had them before, so heaps of good tips in this! Thanks!

I'm making duck pen between two 100m2 vegetable plots. One IBC tote I'll cut in half and fill with the rain water from other tote placed under gutters. Then when the water get dirty I'll use it to fertigate vegetables.

We don’t have a duck house for our runner ducks at all, just a nice sheltered area where they can rest where we change the hay, although ours seem to prefer sleeping around or on the water. Runner ducks seem to be particularly hardy animals though

Yes they can survive with no house no problem at all, it's more for peace of mind that they're safe from predators overnight

Thankyou, can you give link for that walk in run you have and if i need to put extra wire mesh around it as i dont want a fox chewing through it.

Hiya, I've not got a link but it was brought from a company called feelgood. We had pheasants in it before and a fox did get through but that was due to the cable ties not holding, the mesh is very strong.

great vid, what do you do with food in the rain, does it just get wet? thx

Good question, ducks don't mind wet food but it is then wasted if they don't eat it, I always try to make sure they have enough for the day so there's minimal waste, also any food left out will attract rats and hedgehogs.

How to protect then from Rats?

Rats are a problem and will always find a way in. Best practice is to remove food and drinking water overnight
