My wife just asked me to let you know , we got our ducks today . We got 4 today . And she felt I love the first time we saw your video . Now we have them 😊. Thanks for all your videos , following from Ohio USA
I want ducks so bad, and runners really seem to be all around the best backyard birds available. Apparently spending time with birds is good for your mental health:)
I love watching your ducks they are so graceful, with their long necks and delicate colours and I love the way the walk or run so cute obviously make great pets !! 0:15

Hello, thank you very much for the interesting introduction to these pets. Many months ago I first saw them on your channel. And they immediately fascinated me. My name is Elena. I live in Russia. In the old village. In the family home. I'm restoring our garden. We have an old cat, he is 19 years old. And a 14 year old dog. And on April 14 we had little ducklings. We bought 6 small Indian Runners. Thank you again. And I’ll leave a link to your video in the comments.
Now I just want these ducks! I can’t as I live in suburbia in Australia and I’m renting. I can’t imagine how hard it would be applying for a rental and putting “ducks” on the form, I’m sure they would make it super difficult. Hopefully, one day, I’ll have my own space or a super long term semi rural rental. When that happens be SO happy. I’ll also get 2 goslings as they make incredible watch “dogs” and if you get them as goslings they’re really affectionate too!
Loved this video! I've also just watched the tour of your cottage and loved it. I'm not an Instagram or Facebook kind of girl (never had an Instagram or Facebook account) so your perfectly-imperfect video is a breath of fresh air. I'm off to watch some more of your other videos now. 😊
I am so wanting a few ducks… haven’t broached the subject with my husband… at first he said “No!” to chickens… now he loves going out and feeding weeds to “the girls.” So… when I figure out where I would keep them, I’ll start the conversation.
1:50 Fifty years ago we had a herd of Pekin ducks, we used the eggs in cooking also, they were stronger flavored, not bad at all, but they did make baked things and pancakes etc. more tough, now 50 years later with far more knowledge of cooking I realize that the toughness could be remedied by adding more fat to the recipe. 2:28 Fascinating! We need ducks then, because slugs here in Ohio after rain storms will absolutely strip and destroy young plants and new growth.
What a lovely video. I’m in the same zone 8 in Louisiana USA - isn’t that Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean wonderful? I’m definitely thinking of adding layer ducks and I’m beginning to see advantages to the Runners. Thank you and your yard is lovely.❤
You are so lucky I love runner ducks but we only have a postage stamp back garden and we not aloud any livestock on our allotment plots. But I loved watching this video x🙋🏻
I “accidentally” got some in tractor supply and they happen to be the Indian runner ducks… I think. So here I am learning. It’s my first time having ducks
Such a lovely idea, thanks! I was considering chickens since I've always had them at my parebts house. But they could never walk freely because they ruined literally every patch of plants (if not scratching the ground, it was picking at the plant and shitting on the berries..) One question; do they need the male duck for companion reasons? Because if you have them for the eggs mainly, wouldnt just female ducks be good? Or is there another reason? Also; do you have any idea how much space they need? Could they live in a smaller patch or do they need their running space? Grts from Belgium!!!
This is lovely! Please could I ask how far they like to roam? Our garden isn't completely walled / fenced and while we're planning on fencing off an area for them it would be nice to let them out into the wider garden... will they just wander off if not fenced in, or do they like to stay pretty close to their duck house naturally? Thanks.
I just got my first ducks. So far they stay closer than chickens do. They find security in their cage and run to it if they get scared. Also much easier to round up than chickens
Will do another video with this thanks for the feedback 😊 we have to put them in before dark as they won’t go in otherwise and fox will indeed eat them
Hi, how do you pick them up? Do they approach you easily? Did the duck you're holding find its way there on its own, or did you have to catch it by trickery? Won't it fly away the moment you loosen your grip?
What is your enclosure like? And how often do you let them out to free range? And do you have problems with poo and cleaning up etc when free ranging? (are they really messy!)... Do you have to keep them in an enclosure/hut overnight or can you leave them to sleep out free ranging? Thanks 😊
They don't need a big space, about 3sq feet or 1sq meter each everything on the ground and just some straw bedding. Most domestic ducks don't fly so they can run the yard pretty safely. They should be in a house at night if you have predators. If you don't then just access if they want it. They won't go in at night naturally. Ducks are messy. Mostly they poop a lot and like to dig in mud. They also spill a lot of water. If that doesn't bother you then it's not bad. With that said free ranging natural rain keeps things clean for just a few ducks.
Here in CA, our summer is hot and dry. Maybe slugs and snails under mulch, but far less than in winter I think. What do you do if the food supply goes down?
Lovely. What climate is zone 8 ? I’m half dreaming about having runner ducks. However, we are looking having a summer house in Italy so it’s not impossible. I’m not sure which zone Italy is in.
Because the Gulf of Mexico flows “the Gulf Stream” up the Atlantic Ocean (same path as a hurricane, in general), it warms lands along its pathway. It fetches up against west/southwest England and keeps much of England similar to the south & southeast of the United States. Please check this, but she is likely in south or southwest England, not much higher, if at all, than London. But you could get an idea of the weather from the cooler temperatures of the southern US. Maybe Atlanta, Georgia or even Washington, DC. They say we in New Orleans have a Mediterranean climate and our flowering plants are often the same as Mediterranean countries. That is climate 8 or 9, and 9 & 10 get quite hot, almost never snow, and rain a lot.
Hi i have just been gifted 2 runner ducks from a family member after loosing 2 of my dogs within a month of each other never had ducks before so im pretty new to this i have a reasonably sized fenceď off garden but concerned this may not be big enough and worry about the neighbour's how much land do you need for them to live and where is better
Good Afternoon Monalogue do you have a video of where you sleep at night I’m hoping to get some for my cottage garden soon and would like to know where you sleep please if that’s okay thank you
Hi, I live in N Somerset and want to convert my modest garden to permaculture. Would love to meet up with you to share knowledge, if you are open to that. Do you have to keep a drake runner duck with the females?
Oh Runner ducks can terrorize your vegetable beds... We got two to keep slugs under control, didn't turn out so well...to be fair: the cabbage did not get eaten by the slugs...
They are quite quiet as far as ducks go. The drakes make raspy sounds that aren't loud. The female can be quite loud, but they usually don't quack all the time, just when they get excited or frigtened. We have 2 males and 4 females on 2000 m2 land in the suburbs with neighbours all around and we haven't had a complaint after 2 years. We do live in Europe though and get along with neighbours from before.
They are messy. But does it matter in a garden? I let mine run in my orchard where a mess is a good thing. All they will do is fertilize and water your plants. No harm there.
There’s two ways, either clean up the poop immediately or keep the dogs away from the duck area. I just let mine eat the poo. They eat rabbit poo, too. They know how much is too much and when to stop. Dogs eating poo is pretty normal.
ducks drop eggs only when they don't have private safe and calm nesting, if no hen claims nest they will not run around looking for nest and eventually drop egg wherever they are standing at the time.
Absolutely. We have 2 ducks and a drake and whenever I’ve had a nightmare day… I just go outside and watch them or have a hug. Love your garden x

Are you able to potentially do a ‘Dummies Guide’ to owning Runner Ducks - e.g. What straw do you use for their bedding?
I use Teff grass. It is nice and soft.
