Yes. I'm 64 years old and it was only last year when I was looking at a picture of myself feeding the ducks when I was 4 years old that I noticed that the ducks that were in the front of the line at the pond were white. Those were not wild ducks. Those were dumped ducks! I've known about dumped ducks since somebody dumped a duckling in my driveway And I had her for 9 years, And I looked up on the internet what to do with her and feed her and they started talking about dumped ducks. But I never noticed that in my picture from when I was little until last year. I can't say when last year but there was a crash of a shuttle bus from Brandeis University to Boston probably. It crashed into a bunch of trees in either Newton or Waltham and it was like the day after that When I looked at that picture again. Because the place where I used to feed them when I was little was in Newton at Norumbega (Which kind of doesn't exist anymore but sort of does. Anyway all of those places are relatively close to each other and to places where I lived when I was 25)
She’s absolutely correct. My crested duck was an accident. She was supposed to be a regular Pekin. She died of a stroke. My favorite, sweetest Pekin duck, Deb, her legs gave out. 😢 I’m an animal rehabber. I went to school for Zoology although not an ornithologist, I’m capable of caring for ducks. However , I’m ALWAYS game to become more knowledgeable. I now have a blind drake Rouen 🦆. He has NO eyes. He owns me. It’s a complicated relationship. I adore ducks. I appreciate waterfowl in general. You are spot on. Don’t get in over your head. It can break your bank… or worse yet, it can break your heart.
That last part is so true💔 I feel so bad for both the humans and the ducks when people unknowingly pick out a cute little yellow duckling and it grows up to be a jumbo pekin riddled with health issues. It’s not fair, especially considering the places that sell them often don’t educate people about how quickly they will grow
It's funny that the first two breeds of ducks i ever got were Muscovies and Calls! I still raise those two breeds, in separate pens of course, but I can see why you wouldn't recommend Muscovies especially, those guys have massive claws and talons on their wings! They can certainly do some damage if you don't know what you're doing. Thankfully, I've done a lot of research and love my Muscovies and Calls so much, they are certainly the best ducks.
No lie about the Pekin. We got one and around 8 weeks she just dropped out of a massive heart attack. She was a big girl, as in' Lord she's a comin' big. Personality-wise, she was sweet very loving and affectionate. Out of the six ducks we originally got she was our favorite but after the first couple weeks it was very obvious she had health issues due to the breed. The other five seem to be doing great. Maybe one day we'll get some runners to add to our little flock.
Muscovy ducks, ironically, I think are the absolute best. But I TOTALLY know what you mean with how specialized their care is -- It's not hard, just super different.

I didn’t realize the growing too big too quickly happened with certain duck breeds. We rescued some baby chickens that fell off a chicken truck that were meant to be in factory farm chicken houses (so they were bred to be meat), and we lost almost every single bird at a young age due to health issues from them growing excessively big very quickly. It was heartbreaking, but we learned a lot from it. (Also one of the birds who was runt-y and small actually lived a long time and was a lovely pet who I will always remember fondly.)
I started with 3 welsh harlequin males, then got 1 welsh harlequin female and 3 Cayuga females. Learned the hard way why that was a bad idea. But then they had 9 babies, 3 welsh harlequins, 2 males 1 female, 4 female Cayuga's, and 2 mix (They look like Swedish blues) 1 male 1 female. I sold my original 5 and 1 welsh harlequin male and now my 8 ducks are living happily in their home :] and I love them with all my heart
Thank you for telling others who may want ducks for a pet. You did forget to mention ducks are a long term commitment and do require your time and fresh water daily.
true, but that's any pet. Even something as "simple" as a dog is a long-term commitment. Although I do agree some might find easier to release a duck in the wild once they grow boren or can't keep them anymore.
Totally agree with this. I have a crested Pekin but i didnt know about the vaulted skull until after i got her. Luckily so far shes healthy but i will not ever incubate her eggs or use her in breeding.i also have 2 miniature Silver Appleyards who have just hatched babies. They are adorable but you need to watch your drake or separate him. Ive separated mine as he attacked the ducklings. Definitely need to clip their wings but there are useful diagrams and videos out there to help do this properly and safely. Remember ducks are an investment of time and money, and more work than you realise. Definitely do your research before setting up a flock.
We got Pekin ducks because i didn't want fliers and my only option was them or fliers... and their stinkin adorable. I did sooooo much research, especially because of their growth rate. Even though there was niacin in their starter feed it was a feed that was labeled for ducks and chickens so i assumed it may not have been be enough when I saw their legs start to get a little questionable. I wasn't sure if it was a deficiency or their legs are just getting awkward because of their fast growth rate but did more research and with that and talking with other duck owners decided to give brewers yeast, a blend specifically for ducks with added garlic and an other nutrients. For a couple weeks, maybe longer I did do straight nutritional yeast and then went back to the brewers yeast. I also switched to a different food and continued giving the brewers yeast while they are still growing. They are 2 1/2 months old and haven't had any issues ❤
First time duck owner and I started with two calls. Granted it was a hell of an impulse buy and I'm working hard to get my duck knowledge up. I'm really glad you mentioned they could fly because I had no idea. The one is only juuuuust finishing getting the first set of feathers so boy that would have been a shock.

I started with mallard type (Khaki/Rouen) ducks, but then got some muscovy a year later. I like the mallard type for their egg laying, but the muscovy we had from chicks, and they are so much more personable. We moved last fall and have much more room, so now we have geese (two were here on the property already and we bought more goslings), and just bought 8 runner and a mallard ducklings at a local festival yesterday. I'll be watching your channel a lot!
We have 3 mallard ducks started with 2 and 1 offspring, and now 2 years in a row the old female duck flew to 1 of our neighbours. The first occasion was really stressfull, cus we didn't know where it went, the second, I saw here stuck between a platform with a wall being it's side, and the fence which separates us from the neighbour, so the 2 adult ducks were staring down each other from the opposite sides of the fence.
Muscovies are everywhere here near the Florida nature reserves. I never even considered they could be domesticated because they’re so large and their talons are so sharp that they didn’t seem to be pet friendly at all. They are ridiculously friendly with passersby, though.
The very first ducks i had were a muscovy and a khaki campbell. You are right about the muscovy. She was a beast, but i loved the eggs she provided us with. She was not a happy camper though when we collected the eggs.😊

I have one Muscovy that looks if one of her parents might have been a call duck. She's an adult, based on her little bit of caruncles, But she's really tiny. But she's not loud. She doesn't quack. She twitters and she squeaks and she just developed a new sound which I'm interpreting as I'd really like to lay an egg! And then I found an egg. I don't know why she's so tiny. But she's really adorable and she's very beautiful and she's blue and white (For some reason gray ducks are called blue) And I named her marble because she looks like kitchen counter, fireplace, floor...) My roommate was like Well she looks like she wants to be friends with Shadow (big drake) And I said Oh she already is. He wanted to be friends with her the minute she got here, we had to separate them for a little while. But now everyone is getting along until maybe somebody actually manages to hatch something this time and then everybody's going to start fighting with each other again. Such fun. This Drake is really nice. He's very pretty. He's not extremely friendly. He doesn't want to have sex with me - which I really appreciate - but He's not so terrified of me that he claws me to death. If I need to pick him up and put him on the shelf, I can actually do it most of the time. And if I have lettuce or worms... And so far he hasn't killed any of his offspring. Which is very nice in a drake. Of course he can also climb an 8 ft hardware cloth fence. I have never seen that before. Except with the ducklings. Trying to get to their mother. After their mother walked around the duck house. I've seen them climb. Colette has found a way to get into the banana trees. So Dennis will be fixing that...
My first onds were domesticated mallard ducks, my grandpa gave them to me and they were with us for like 6 years. They died bc they got sick and we couldn't treat them in time. And while I had those, I got some muscovy ducks. I played often with the drake while I had them.
Hello, we are getting ducklings very soon, (like in 2 days) one a blue Swedish and the other a mallard and I was wondering when the best time to clip a mallards wing is. Awesome video though!
You have to wait until the feathers are fully developed so the blood vessels recede in the feathers. It may depend on the individual duck when exaclty that will happen, but you’ll see the mallard starting to flap around before it can really take off. Or just keep them in a top covered pen until you’re absolutely sure the blood feathers have receded
a couple days ago we found a group of blackbellied whistler ducklings who had been abandoned by their mom :( we’re taking care of them since we have a bunch of ducks now but since theyre not domesticated theres not much said about raising that breed. turns out they can CLIMB WALLS and we had to construct a new baby pen for them instead of using our old one 😭
Hi! I love your channel. I have a Pekin she is an only duck. She keeps going broody and not laying eggs. She took about 2 weeks off. Then went broody again. It is Spring here in New york. Will she be ok.
Oh no! I’m a first time duck person. I have two. My favorite is a Peking male duck. He is the sweetest gentlest pet I have ever had. His name is Ian and he loves classical guitar music. Do you have any videos on special care for that breed. I would do anything to keep him healthy.
My other duck is a Cayuga female. The Peking and Cayuga get along really well and are never apart. The Cayuga is not as friendly to me but is bonded to the Peking.
My first ducks are calls, I got them this year and they live with my chickens in a covered enclosure but they get to free range in daytime m, I have six and am getting more this weekend and I am experienced at bird care
What about Mandarin ducks? I know they’re not domesticated, but they also seem to be popular as pets which would mean they’re most likely not suitable for beginners? Or are they not suitable as pets in general?
I don’t recommend keeping wild ducks as “pets” because they’re not going to act like pets. They’re more like, pretty animals to look at from a few feet away lol. Most wild ducks require a federal permit to own them in the US so it’s not really a popular topic of conversation since owning them is inaccessible to the average person anyways. Mandarin ducks are an exception though, because they don’t require a federal permit. Mandarins require a ton more research than domestic ducks though, because the information about domestics won’t necessarily apply to mandarins because they’re separate species. Pretty birds though!

Yes, they've become really popular recently... I don't know who has been selling them but people are incubating the eggs and raising them to be "lawn ornaments."
Gonna add a caveat to the Muscovy ducks. Its the males that grow really large the females on the other hand are pretty much a standard size. This makes breeding season a stressful time as we need to keep a close eye on the males. Another point is if cross breed them with mallard ducks the offspring will be sterile.
My female pekin duck has always been walking a little weird compared to my other ducks who waddled like a normal duck but not her. She walks sort of like a penguin and might have a hard time catching up with her duck friends.
I have 4 duckling, Unfortunately two of my duckling lost their one leg by falling down from the table. And it has been with us for the past 2 weeks. It is so sad to see them and one duckling from them is getting really weaker. What am i suppose to them. There is no animal doctor here in my area. Please advice 😢
Slightly off topic, what type of duck is Munchkin? I've had some Pekins before, but yours are smaller and more fluffed up. Yet I know I've known Munchkin for atleast a year. Did you breed different types?
I'm a beginner and I had Multiple Muscovy Ducks back in 2019 Which were hard to take care of but now I have 1 Muscovy duck who has grown Very big Yes, I don't Recommend them For Beginners but they're are also very common just make sure to give them the right treatment and food :)
Yeah I actually just got two ducks about three months ago a pekin and a Rouen, they must of made a mistake with my Rouen duck, cuz she turned out to be a mallard duck, but she can't be more than five feet from Shiro(my pekin duck) or she freaks out and goes crazy. But they both are really friendly, another weird thing is they're really small, like Mocha (my mallard) she is about the size of a call duck, maybe even smaller and I have no idea why, same with my pekin she's also quite small, I tried looking stuff up but nothing popped up. I don't know, for now they're both happy and healthy and enjoying their life.
Yes they are! They were bred specifically to have loud voices, so the females can be super noisy. I can hear them on the second floor of my house when they quack at night, but I don’t think they bother the neighbors. The male call ducks are quiet though, like most male ducks
I wish more people would stop buying animals with purposely-bred deformities. There are so many dog and cat breeds that are suffering because people think that super flat face is cute. :\
@@DunkinDucks and actually promote this suffering by breeding for these qualities. There is a push by some groups and breeders to breed back the older types of flat-faced breeds ~ breeding back in longer muzzles and more space for nasal cavities and reducing cranial pressure on the orbits. Also, some breeds (Frenchies are notorious for it) mostly need cesarean sections, as they struggle to birth naturally, due to the oversized heads to birth canal ratio. We can only try to educate people to avoid these breeds, and the extremely exorbitant medical and surgical costs associated with helping them to live with less pain and respiratory distress.

Muscovies are pretty cool indeed. Even the wild ones are extremely tame in some cases.
Muscovies are also my faves.
I have call ducks in with my regular ducks and Muscovy, they all do fine together. Though it helps that my call ducks are drakes

I got into caring for Muscovies mainly because I couldn't stand by and do nothing when their babies fell into storm drains.

My rouen ducks are so cute and friendly. They have been so wonderful for me as a beginner duck owner

Hi! I love your channel. I have a Pekin she is an only duck. She keeps going broody and not laying eggs. She took about 2 weeks off. Then went broody again. It is Spring here in New york. Will she be ok.

Oh no! I’m a first time duck person. I have two. My favorite is a Peking male duck. He is the sweetest gentlest pet I have ever had. His name is Ian and he loves classical guitar music. Do you have any videos on special care for that breed. I would do anything to keep him healthy.
My other duck is a Cayuga female. The Peking and Cayuga get along really well and are never apart. The Cayuga is not as friendly to me but is bonded to the Peking.

My first ducks are calls, I got them this year and they live with my chickens in a covered enclosure but they get to free range in daytime m, I have six and am getting more this weekend and I am experienced at bird care

What about Mandarin ducks? I know they’re not domesticated, but they also seem to be popular as pets which would mean they’re most likely not suitable for beginners? Or are they not suitable as pets in general?
I don’t recommend keeping wild ducks as “pets” because they’re not going to act like pets. They’re more like, pretty animals to look at from a few feet away lol. Most wild ducks require a federal permit to own them in the US so it’s not really a popular topic of conversation since owning them is inaccessible to the average person anyways. Mandarin ducks are an exception though, because they don’t require a federal permit. Mandarins require a ton more research than domestic ducks though, because the information about domestics won’t necessarily apply to mandarins because they’re separate species. Pretty birds though!

Yes, they've become really popular recently... I don't know who has been selling them but people are incubating the eggs and raising them to be "lawn ornaments."
Gonna add a caveat to the Muscovy ducks. Its the males that grow really large the females on the other hand are pretty much a standard size. This makes breeding season a stressful time as we need to keep a close eye on the males. Another point is if cross breed them with mallard ducks the offspring will be sterile.
muskovys sat on my patio banging on the window everytime I went to the fridge. I had to takew them cold lettuce. homer, Bart, Marg..The muskovys.

My female pekin duck has always been walking a little weird compared to my other ducks who waddled like a normal duck but not her.
She walks sort of like a penguin and might have a hard time catching up with her duck friends.

I have 4 duckling, Unfortunately two of my duckling lost their one leg by falling down from the table. And it has been with us for the past 2 weeks. It is so sad to see them and one duckling from them is getting really weaker. What am i suppose to them. There is no animal doctor here in my area. Please advice 😢
Slightly off topic, what type of duck is Munchkin? I've had some Pekins before, but yours are smaller and more fluffed up. Yet I know I've known Munchkin for atleast a year. Did you breed different types?

I'm a beginner and I had Multiple Muscovy Ducks back in 2019 Which were hard to take care of but now I have 1 Muscovy duck who has grown Very big Yes, I don't Recommend them For Beginners but they're are also very common just make sure to give them the right treatment and food :)
and yes, the ducks I had in 2019 were ducklings that sadly died :(

Yeah I actually just got two ducks about three months ago a pekin and a Rouen, they must of made a mistake with my Rouen duck, cuz she turned out to be a mallard duck, but she can't be more than five feet from Shiro(my pekin duck) or she freaks out and goes crazy. But they both are really friendly, another weird thing is they're really small, like Mocha (my mallard) she is about the size of a call duck, maybe even smaller and I have no idea why, same with my pekin she's also quite small, I tried looking stuff up but nothing popped up. I don't know, for now they're both happy and healthy and enjoying their life.
Mallard ducks are similar in size to pet quality call ducks, that’s normal! :) The pekin may just have genetics on the smaller side

Yes they are! They were bred specifically to have loud voices, so the females can be super noisy. I can hear them on the second floor of my house when they quack at night, but I don’t think they bother the neighbors. The male call ducks are quiet though, like most male ducks

I wish more people would stop buying animals with purposely-bred deformities. There are so many dog and cat breeds that are suffering because people think that super flat face is cute. :\
Yes, pugs are so flat faced they can't breed, and their eyes actually FALL OUT. Don't Google it unless you are ready for gore.

@@DunkinDucks and actually promote this suffering by breeding for these qualities. There is a push by some groups and breeders to breed back the older types of flat-faced breeds ~ breeding back in longer muzzles and more space for nasal cavities and reducing cranial pressure on the orbits. Also, some breeds (Frenchies are notorious for it) mostly need cesarean sections, as they struggle to birth naturally, due to the oversized heads to birth canal ratio. We can only try to educate people to avoid these breeds, and the extremely exorbitant medical and surgical costs associated with helping them to live with less pain and respiratory distress.
