Carpenter strikes me as the type of man who after talking to him and telling him how much his films mean to you. He stays silent, stands up and says "I'm gonna take a shit..." and walks out.
Might be professional jealousy on Cronenberg's part. His movies have gotten more critical respect, but John Carpenter's movies have made a larger impact on popular culture.
Idk it seems to me that Cronenberg isn’t full of himself or at least isn’t any more full of himself than Carpenter. There’s an interview with Carpenter from the 70s where he says Altmans a bad filmmaker and Spielberg and Lucas are overrated. So he’s clearly got a bit of an ego himself.
Erick Von Witz The two films you mentioned aren't even Cronenberg's best. I love John Carpenter, but Cronenberg has a much greater and more consistent body of work.
Erick Von Witz I have to disagree. As I say, I love John Carpenter, but my man's gotta be Cronenberg. Mind you, that's bad of him to snub John, considering how far back they go.
TheDensley7 Consider the fact that Carpenter opened the doors for all people like Cronenberg, Hooper, Craven, etc. etc. Carpenter WAS the late 70's early 80's. The God of that genre.
cfx5000 What? Wes Craven's first movie came out in 1973, before Carpenter. Hooper was making films before Carpenter, and so w as Cronenberg. Last House was 72, actually.
I'm surprised that "The Thing" was a box office failure compared to a film like "Scanners" from Cronenberg. That movie is just as graphic and yet I didn't hear that much criticism about it.
Carpenter has been in semi-seclusion at his home in San Marino for the better part of 20 years. He does virtually every interview there because, like Kubrick, he prefers to be home. He moved there shortly after THE FOG because he fell in love with the geography. I also think that he has early stage emphysema because he's been smoking for roughly 50+ years, and unfiltered ones for roughly half of that, so I think traveling is really hard on him physically.
@@TheomiteJohn went through bad health in 2015 and quit smoking then but got much better physically. That was his home office though haha I met him in 2015 when he was just getting better (undisclosed illness) and he was the nicest guy.
I wonder if John had never started smoking if things might've been different around '01. I think his waning health, which has become very visible in the last 20 years, may have had something to do with being burned out.
After coming from a separate interview of his where he says he has no idea what it means that he has a "cult" film or cult following it's funny that this interview starts off with saying Ghosts on Mars is a great cult film and John just ignores that comment.
Hey that's Norman Reedus in another zombie thing and Zombie Apocalypse had Ken Foree (original Dawn Of The Dead) in it and it wasn't that bad complete with a reference or 2 to Dawn. (about malls not being the perfect place to be safe and a not so direct quote of no more room in hell but when hell overflows).
Nope, not an early riser. One thing I've heard him say in interviews is that he disliked having to get up early and work such a grinding schedule while film-making.
12:10 I think they SHOULD'VE let Halloween die imo... reason why is NOW if you see the remakes or sequels, you KNOW coming into it that hes NOT going to die... you're basically going to see people get butchered and murdered... It lost my interest and i feel that they SHOULD'VE stopped after 2 and let Michael die in that fire, and went with John's original idea of using the name but having a different concept every year with the title...
14:42 He shares my sentiment, but he doesn't SAY the Halloween series lol I know earlier in the video he says he's ALL FOR Halloween remakes and sequels, BUT... what he says also sums up the Halloween franchise 💯💯🎃🎃
As for my review of The Thing.....the film is obviously heavily inspired by Alien-race of alien parasites beating up on an isolated group of people-but I don't think The Thing is as good as Alien. Whereas in Alien-despite the crew members behaving as morons-the characters are each given some dimensions and the viewer feels for when each of the characters is killed by the Alien. But in The Thing none of the characters have any dimension or depth and unlike in Alien, the viewer never cares when each of them is killed. Not to mention, the characters are even more mentally handicapped than the ones in Alien! Also why couldn't The Thing have any female characters (though I understand Adrienne Barbeau had a small part that didn't make the final print). I found The Thing interesting but not great. Just interesting. The film has since gone on to a cult status.
Good comment..I kinda liked we didn’t know too much about the characters in the thing…I like the mystique of not knowing too much about the characters but felt I was rooting for each one to make it..that’s just me!
Looking back at this lol it’s funny you guys talking junk about world war z which imo and others is a good movie and then the walking dead which turned out to be one of the best shows going to finish with pretty much 12 seasons 2 spin-off shows and 2 movies , those remarks didn’t age well lmao also no “the thing “ talk smh
“Let the geniuses go”-JC ❤

This is the funniest comment I've seen in years
LOL yeah thats why I love him.
Lol
Damn, I felt that story of Cronenberg not looking at him despite being old friends. Damn.
I don't know where Cronenberg gets off, his last good movie was History of Violence, has produced anything noteworthy since.
Might be professional jealousy on Cronenberg's part. His movies have gotten more critical respect, but John Carpenter's movies have made a larger impact on popular culture.
@@snakes6248 Carpenter is also more skilled as a formalist/stylist as well. Superior use of visual language.

Yeah that's some cold-ass shit. A Canadian should know better.
Hearing he loves bulletstorm warms my cold little heart❤️
Happy Birthday to John Carpenter!
BEST interview with John EVER!
This was a fucking fantastic interview ! , thank's for sharing !.
Haha. John is DONE with this interview around the 16 minute mark. The tired old man is certainly charming.
The cigarette lmao
legend
Great interview!
David Cronenberg dissed John Carpenter? Cronenberg couldn't hold JC's jock strap.
Crazy, right? Nearly shit myself when John told me that story.
Erick Von Witz The two films you mentioned aren't even Cronenberg's best. I love John Carpenter, but Cronenberg has a much greater and more consistent body of work.

Was that John Carpenter's home/office? Thanks for posting this I'm always interested on what John Carpenter is up to.

He quit in 2015.
Hey, if anyone noticed that's Daryl (Norman Reedus) from Walking Dead in Cigarette Burns, now I gotta see it.

Nicely done!
I would love to hear what JC thinks about "The Thing" video game. I think it is brilliant and one of my favorite games.
There's a quote from him on the back of the game's box. He endorsed it.
Kevin Sussman's performance in The Big Bang Theory reminds me of Carpenter
Well said, John!. Bulletstorm is indeed awesome! One of the best shooters out there!
wonder if he played Metal Gear

Who knew these two would one day work together to make HALLOWEEN 2018 :D
I'd love to know how John Carpenter spends his day. Is he an early riser?
Nope, not an early riser. One thing I've heard him say in interviews is that he disliked having to get up early and work such a grinding schedule while film-making.
he's so tired of the bs xD
Is he drinking tea or coffee?

I disagree with his sentiment on nothing original being made. We're going through a horror renaissance ATM with New Horror.
This was 9 years ago.
@@OrbitZombie Realized that after I commented. A monument to my stupidity if you will.
@@OrbitZombie lol.
I wonder what Carpenter thought of Get Out, Hereditary, the Strangers, Sinister, As Above So Below, the Witch, Hush, Oculus, etc

The Walking Dead is terrible. Stopped being good after the 1st season.
