well i recently bought a makita XT269 and the first time i used the drill in high gear 2nd speed it made that same clicking noise. so i decided to call makita and i asked the associate to hear the drill and he said that thats a brake system that's a safety feature of the drill so when basically you use it in high gear the drill spins at high rpms so the brake engages and it stops the chuck fast and that's why it makes a clicking sound. so don't worry about it just think of it as a safety feature added for protection at the drill.

Its just the chuck brake making that noise.. Ive owned dewalts 18v xrp set since they were released many years ago and the drill does the same thing. I also own the 20v max xr set and same with those.. The reason for the noise is that the drill puts out so much power and spins with high rpms, so as soon as you release the trigger the brake instantly stops the chuck from spinning... All in all its not a problem with the drill whatsoever.. You will never have a problem with it.. Ive had the 18v xrp's for 8-10 years whenever they were released and they still do it today and work perfectly fine.. Even after dropped from 25 or so feet off ladders lol.. I would NEVER buy anything other than dewalt cordless tools.. They have never let me down and i dont expect it to let you down as well.. I hope this helps!!

I have to say my mind is changing. I used this drill for a
few hours today assembling my outdoor chairs I build and it did not once made
the multiple grinding clacking noise like the one I returned did. I understand
the brake part, I’m convinced the drill I returned was malfunctioning, this one
is no where near the noise making drill the other one was. I love DeWalt’s the
old drill is at least 10+ years and batteries aren’t doing the job. Thank You
for the feed back I may just keep it.

I just wonder how it is possible that people using power tools for years do not know what this sound is. This sound is immediate stop mechanism. Many power tools have this mechanism, not only drills. It is a safety feature and this is how it should sound. Personally I like this sound.

My more expensive Dewalt drill makes that same nose that drill is 10 years old. Never had a problem. I guess if you don't like the nose but actually a few drills I own make that same sound. never had issues with it.

I just bought this combo last night on sale. Drill makes this exact same noise. I almost brought it back and I think stores must be dealing with a lot of returns. Either DeWalt should make the brake quieter or advise customers in BIG letters that this is "normal". I'll keep drill now that I know it's not just mine doing it. Your video helped!

logical canuck thank you for the comment and not blasting me like most. I totally agree and what i simply stated they should of done something to quiet it. Not a problem just very annoying to me. I still use it but actually bought a Porter Cable brushless drill and love it. Just one of those things. I don't have a DeWalt brushless to compare to but i hear the don't do the same. Hopefully they learned. Thanks again for viewing just tune it out and enjoy the combo. I use the impact ALL the time.

My old DeWalt I'd keep but just too heavy and batteries no longer available. I was just upset the new style was soo noisey but the replacement isn't. When trigger is released just a click. Nothing more. Unlike the other which sounded like metal in a garbage disposal. Huge difference. This I can deal with.
Than you sir for the input
      I'm going to keep it

I just bought this set. It was mostly for the Impact Driver but the drill has more power than my 12V Dewalt which I love! I tested the drill and mine kinda does a sound but not as loud as yours but only when the drill is on speed 2 (low torque high speed) On speed 1 (high torque low speed) when I just release the trigger it doesn't make the noise, but on speed 2 it does if I just let it go. However it doesn't make the sound if I slowly let go of the trigger to slow it down as it is variable speed trigger. It's basically the same sound the chuck brake makes when you set your screw into wood and you want it to stop turning so you don't drill the screw too deep... I would just enjoy the drills

I agre the inpact driver is phenomenal. The drill was completely faulty. After i returnede it and recieved another one after a few hours of use while assembling some out door furniture i build, the drill setteled in and has performed perfect. just a simple click when the stop brake engages. No more clicking. DeWalt is a quality product. I just got the luck of the draw and happen to get a faulty one. But all is good now. Enjoy your kit. It will serve you well.
      Thanks for the input

I had the same set. Made the same clunking noise that it was when you showed it drilling. The short snap and the end when toy have it all the way and then let go is just a common noise. It's an electric brake thing. I took mine back and got a brushless set and love it. When you look it up everyone is taking about a different noise

+trailblazers2001Last year I updated a lot of my older tools, just time, and I don’t use them as I did working full time. Looking back I wish I went brushless but the new one only has a click when I let off so this one in the vid was truly faulty. You were smart to up grade when you returned yours. Just a little taken when I read threads way back to 2011 and people were talking about a noise, would have thought DeWalt might take notice and change something to cure it. Can’t have top notch quality on everything their name is on but my planner and miter saw they got right. Absolutely 5 star all the way. Thanks for the comment, enjoy your brushless set.

+The Shack also that's one is the cheapest dewalt 20v drill I'm pretty sure. I was going to exchange mine but they didn't have them and I saw the brushless kit on clearance and glad I got it. It's still a pretty good drill if the clunking noise is taken care of. I got mine at Home Depot and they had no questions for the return.

Sadly I bought that set through Lowe’s and no one seemed to know how to return it. went to 3 different stores finally finding one that had the set to talk to a manager who must of graduated high school and was able to exchange it. Just another of a few bad experiences with Lowe’s and why I don't shop there any more.

I was a die hard Lowe’s advocate. But when Lowe’s closed their doors by my OC rental I had to go to Home Depot for supplies I needed for painting repairs and upgrades. Needless to say the experience converted me. They have a better web site and better managing tools for the small business owner than Lowe’s. I walk into Home Depot and I will have 2 or 3 people ask if I need help. The last time I stepped in to Lowe’s I asked a lady to call someone I was in need of assistance. I needed to talk to a person in regards of concrete stain. I waited and waited went back up front stood10 feet from her watched her on her phone for 10 minutes when she finally looked up looking a little startled asked if anybody helped me yet I gave her that look walked up to her sat my paint supplies on her register and said “I don’t think they pay to be on your phone and NO nobody has helped me. Maybe you are all texting each other to be bothered by the customers. I just wish I was videoing you so I could post just how great customer service is at Lowe’s”. I’ve never set foot back in Lowe’s from that day

I recently purchased a Ridgid combo kit that came with a hammer drill. It's a two speed drill and when on the 2nd speed it makes the same type of sound when stopping. It's the latest generation drill gen5x and the noise is irritating as if somethings not right. Normally on the first speed there is no noise while stopping.
Is the stopping noise normal? I don't know, but it doesn't make me feel any better while drilling at number two speed.
I would like to know exactly what is making the noise and how the noise is harmless to the drill.

I have the same drill. a Christmas gift from my Sons. I have the same sound from mine when in speed position #2, but my chuck stops so quickly, that it loosens after 3 or 4 stops. The drill falls right out! I tightened the chuck as tight as I can, and my Son did also, it still loosens after 3-4 times going from full speed to stop. Going to call Dewalt customer service to see what they can do. I love the drill and driver, but this problem is PITA!.

If you prefer to not hear the click of an electric brake, maybe you should use a corded drill that doesn't utilize one. Sounds a lot quieter than the impact mechanism on an impact driver to me.

Mine just arrived and sounds like this! Its horrible but my fear is: its something wrong or the tool will work fine and is a caracteristic of this model? I´m from Brazil and here Dewalt is the best that you can get (unless you sell a kidney), and returning is a bit difficult.

Luciano My first one was faulty the second one makes the normal clicking noise but NO where near the sound of the first. I have no issue with the drill with about a year of use just don't care for the clacking noise. So much so i actually went out and purchased a Porter Cable brushless and its as quiet as a mouse. Love it. Just my personal thing didn't care for the noise. I only use my drill about one day a week so not a LOT of use but enough if something was to come up. DeWalt is good I just don't care for the noise. The brushless are quieter but for the price and frequency of use PC for me is a better value especially when 20v max DeWalt is $200 and the PC 20v max is $130

I bought this set around the same time you posted this video. Think I paid $169.. well that being said I regret this all the time. 1. These aren't USA assembled. 2. The brushless combo is going for $189-$199.. 3. This kit comes with odd 1.3ah batteries, when the brushless kit comes with 1.5ah batteries.. 4. My charger has a short in it.. I have to wiggle it around to start the charge... the drills work good.. i love the impact.. but drill driver... disappointed sometimes.. I feel like it's to long or something... just feels awkward.. might sell mine on eBay for a few bucks and get a brushless hammer drill dcd996... just my $.02... cheers.

Ross I feel ya brother. I like my DeWalt planner and miter
saw but I hate to say I’m not too impressed with this set. I like my PC more. I
have no idea how well the new generation performs but they are a bit out of my
price range. I know the Milwaukee Hammer drill was outstanding again the new
model I’m not sure. DeWalt and Milwaukee go
back and forth. I really wish the others would put the 3 LED design in their
tools. I don’t see as good as I did and that is very helpful for me. Thanks for
viewing and hope all turns out for the best.

    • @R0sssfire

The Shack I might also add I do wish I invested more and went with the Milwaukee. My big fall back is; it's simply overkill for me. Sure I'm getting a good high performance piece, but it's more of an ego fix than practicality. Dewalt is the perfect medium in the cordless tool lines.. you aren't buying a total home owner non-workhorse... (cough cough Craftsman, Ryobi, Kobalt) dewalt can take the abuse and has a decent warranty. I know I'll get beat up by some over over calling ryobi out, however.. put a ryobi impact up against the dewalt impact and you'll see why it's worth spending an extra $30. Dewalts biggest fault is the outrageous cost of high capacity battery packs.. ouch. I'm tempted to buy the newer Porter Cable brushless combo. Much more affordable and also a reliable hard worker.

True, a click is normal but that grinding noise wasnt. after a few months with the new one never heard that sound again only the click the first one was faulty. I love DeWalt. i just picked up a DeWalt 12" duel sliding compound miter saw which ill try to unbox this week but no guarantees cause im moving my grandma so it might be next week. DeWalt is a proven brand and i guess i was surprised i just got a bad one in a million. I also have a DeWalt DW735 planner thats phenomenal. All is well in The Shack DeWalt isn't going anywherer soon.

They say its normal but I agree with you it sounds like the electric brake they threw in there is going to break something I'm on my third drill Dewalt drill in 3 years I bought the premium 20 volt when it first came out had accident some water and burn it up I got another one my second one it did and do what yours was doing with the it's kind of like the electric brake was kicking in three or four times in a row like Bam Bam Bam Bam when it would stop after using that drill for a year it only got worse sounding open it up on Monday to look at it and I couldn't see any physical damage from that but I agree that sounds horrible

Wow can’t believe it got worse. You would think sense enough people have been saying things about that noises that DeWalt would take notice and change something; the older models didn't make that noise. Funny my drill
got quieter after a few weeks of use building some outdoor furniture, still made the click noise but not nearly as noticeable. I’m not a Ridgid fan but I got a brushless impact driver and I’m impressed on how smooth the brushless
system is. The stopping reminded me of my air wrenches and sound almost like them, that air torque sound. If this is the new craze so far I like it. I may wait and see about getting a deal on a DeWalt or Milwaukee brushless and sell my brushed impacts.

    • @logiticalresponse9574
      @logiticalresponse9574 8 років тому +1

+The Shack I bought the 20 volt Dewalt brushless impact when it came out it's the one that has the speed control 1 2 & 3 that's the most expensive one and I'll be honest if it had a a ratcheting Chuck I would use it more than I would my drill you know if I could use it in that capacity but the impacting doesnt do so good through straight drilling but the brushless motors are definitely the way to go have doubled the battery life pretty much per charge. the first 20 volt drill I bought was brushed the second 1 was brushless and I use them on the same batteries and man. i tell ya it really did double the battery life. The dcd771 I got was the company I work for the guy went to replace my other drill that burn up and couldn't find the exact one that I had so he bought that and for what I use it for be honest it ain't worth a crap and honestly through some research I do believe that is the same as the Black and Decker 20 volt drill with it they sell and I really couldn't believe he actually bought that for me cuz had the premium top-of-the-line Dewalt brushless hammer drill and he replaces it with that dcd771 and I tell you I had a Bosch 12 volt set that I used at my house and that 12 volt Bosch drill is better than at Dewalt 20 volt drill in my opinion. have a good one

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  7 років тому

No suggestions needed. It was an observation in my first review video when I got this set. The light being under the chuck I had problems seeing the mark where I was wanting to drill and tip of the drill bit due to the shadow the light cast because of it position under the chuck. And I noted if they relocated it down by the battery and shine up that would eliminate that problem. So if I was to go to another brand the same problem would follow. But now the New DeWalt’s have the light down by the battery but I can’t afford the price. I LOVE my DeWalt planner and miter saw. I’m almost speechless for my Milwaukee M18 finish nail gun. I like it SOO much i got another. I don’t believe any one brand is the best. Every brand has its high and low tools.

I just bought 2 of these DCD771C2 drill from Lowes. They both had that noise. I have had several DeWalt drillsl before this and none of them made that noise. I took these drill back to Lowes and they refunded me with no hassel. Good for Lowes, shame on DeWalt.

Spartian good for you. I've taken a LOT of grief for not liking the noise. But we all have our personal likes and dislikes. I personally just didn't like it. rearguardless if that is how it is suppose to sound. I still think they could of came up with a better design. So I CHOSE to put my dewalt aside and i bought a brushless Porter Cable and absolutely love it. I know brushless isn't the same level as a brushed but for about $100 less vs. the brushless dewalt for as much as i use the drill i will always recommend the PC for the average homeowner and weekend DIY'er but if I was doing a LOT of drill related work I'd go with Milwaukee brushless for the contractor grade tool for the drill driver. Thank you for viewing and great comment.

I have the same drill which I bought for $99. I also have the better combo kit which has the same impact driver. My drill makes the same sound when I take my finger off the trigger. that's the automatic brake but you got to remember its their cheapest regular driver. the better one doesn't have that sound. My question for this is this, does anyone notice a smell that comes out of the impact driver? its not just mine either. I'm in construction and meet a lot of Dewalt guys and almost all of them noticed the smell. its a slight foodie type of smell.

That drill was faulty. The new on doens't make the sound nearly as bad just the normal click. As the smell, it's funny my Porter Cable also a smell as well. My DeWalt almost smells like a slight wire plastic kinda burning weird smell. Thought it might be a break in thing but even after a few months of use i still catch the smell here and there.

Red Gemini I haven’t been back since. The people there are (at least the stores in my general area) more concerned with just waiting to go home than actually helping the customer. One time I went to get some paint for a customer and asked a lady to call for assistance after 10 minutes and another person showing up also needing help I walked back to the check out stood there and just stared at the lady. She was so busy on her phone she never noticed me. I stood there for at least 7-8 minutes before she finally noticed me. Looking a bit surprised she asked if she could help I said “no I’m sorry I interrupted your phone time.” sat some items I had with me on her counter and then said “There isn’t anyone helping us and your evidently too busy on your phone to bother with customers so as much as I DON’T like Home Depot they just got a new customer.” They lost a $300 sale and many thousands since. These are my experiences. Don’t make a diction based on my bad experiences as I said it’s the stores in my area they could be better elsewhere. Draw your own conclusion. Thank you for viewing and I always appreciate the comments.

Complaining about a noise that's nonessential to the functionality of the tool is kinda odd. If they "fix" this issue you're complaining about, you'd pay for that in the return product. Also, if you don't have the money to buy a more expensive unit, why have you stated in a previous line you'll wait to get another one when it comes out & use this "noisy" one as a spare or donate it? Sounds like you've got money & you're just complaining because you found an outlet to mass complain to.....
