Well worth it I would say, I was 7 when this came out and remember they day my cousin got it for his birthday. Just such an amazing moment and it wasn't even my birthday.
My dad was a merchant marine at the time of the release in Japan and brought it home with an adapter so we could play it in the states. With the official strategy guide in hand, my brothers and I spent EVERY ounce of free time in the mushroom kingdom. We were gods on the playground with our knowledge. By the time it dropped in the US, I was the go to guy for tips and tricks! Hands down my favorite game of all time
I remember being allowed to skip school that day to stand in line at my local Toys R Us to grab my copy of SMB3. I can still recall the energy in that line. People young and old were literally buzzing. Man, I miss those yellow slips that you would take to the video game cage.

My late dad had bought a NES for me when I was a child. To this day my sister and I always reminesce over our childhood especially over Christmas holidays where we'd spend hours playing Super Mario Bros 3. One of the most iconic and memorable part of my childhood that I'll never forget ❤️
SMB 3 is truely a timeless masterpiece. My brother abd I spent so many hours playing tgis game. I could never get past the "angry sun level" as a kid. The accomplishement I felt beating the first ship I will never forget. I felt like I grew up a bit that day.
Bullfrog Jay I used to use my P Wing on the Angry Sun level until I finally beat it in 1991. Fun times. This game changed the way I looked at games and the world. It's the measuring stick.
Mario 3 was released in the UK when I was Thirteen, and the hype around this game is unmatched by any game before or since. I played Mario 3 for Three Months every single day until I conquered the game finding every secret and destroying every level. Good times. Love the video, takes me on a nostalgia trip down memory lane 👍
It's amazing how many of us had the same experience at the same time. I was the same age and I believe I got it that Christmas also. My all time favorite video game.
this is gonna sound crazy but i find something very calming or zen like about that yellow mario 3 box art, whenever i see it on a poster or add or vid it just puts me at ease.
I still remember unwrapping the box for my birthday.. I was 5 in 1990 so I must have gotten my NES in that spring or summer while my birthday is in December. SMB3 was the first other game I got for the console (would usually borrow games from other kids).. That big yellow box will always he my favorite piece of video game box art
Mario 3 is one of my all time favorite games, and yes The Wizard was one of the reasons I wanted it. Super Mario World came out later and has much more exploration to it, but Mario 3, it feels more "magical" to me. The worlds, power-ups, and enemies were more creative despite its simpler 8-bit presentation.
I feel the same! Something about a trilogy and while 16 bit was out there most of us hadn’t experienced it yet plus the hype machine behind it makes finally getting the game amazing
Not to downplay world but that was more of a snes tech demo like the original smb, it was our introduction to the super Nintendo and how it worked. SMB3 was the finale of the Nes, pulling out all the tricks they had learned over the years.. I think that's why SMB3 feels more of a complete package

Still remember all the flute locations and warp pipes even now as a 37 year old. It's my second favourite platformer only to sonic on megadrive. Long live Nintendo,I want a release of SMB3 .
By the way I. The thank you letter in the Jp manual they mention that the 2 whistles in world 1 are a way to quickly return to your last place played because they couldn’t put in a battery save. Don’t know why they couldn’t but that’s pretty cool of them

i wholeheartedly agree. greatest game of all time. the replay value on this game is bonkers. i beat it in like 1990 and i was 7. i can sit down today and still play through it at 36 and its still just as enjoyable.

I remember playing Super Mario Brothers 3 as a kid in the early nineties. That game was part of the idyllic, halcionic days of summer for me growing up. I didn't always get along with the neighbor kids growing up, but this game brought us together. We all loved it. After you've beaten the game, there was so much hidden in the game afterwards. Oh, the memories.
This was a really solid documentary. Great job man. Had me captivated the whole way through, a whole bunch of tidbits I didn't know about the game, all kinds of commercials, some of which I had never seen before, some of which I fondly remember, and of course all our favorite parts of the game itself.

My story: This was my birthday present, Sept. 1990. I turned 9. My mom went broke making sure I had a copy and it was the last major NES game I got before Sega Genesis changed my life. This is the first time I've heard the Japanese side of things!
Ill never forget the day i got this game. It was my sixth birthday and i was allowed to stay up late to play it. The next day i went next door to my friends house and we beat it together. Good times man, good times.
I’m 34 so my very first memories of SMB 3/SMB/Duck Hunt, TMNT NES games in general were originally me hitting buttons not knowing what I was doing. My cousins would just give me a controller when they babysat me to keep me occupied. My grandpa bought a Snes at launch and Super Mario World. That was the first game I remember actually understanding what I was doing, getting fully engrossed in a game and falling in love with gaming. I ended up beating it before I started kindergarten. SMW is still my favorite 2d platformer of all time. Well a few years later my Snes collection had grown huge but I vaguely remembered the system that came before. I ended up finding and buying an NES with about ten games at a garage sale. SMB3 was one of those games. Most of the games were tough for me to play after truly growing up on a 16 bit system but SMB3 was the exception. It was more Mario platforming goodness and I was shocked how well a game on this older hardware still played perfectly and held up. I also loved the creativity in the world/level design. I loved how the difficulty was a bit tougher than World. I loved the creativity of the power ups. World is still my favorite 2d platformer and Mario game but 3 is literally right behind it and I can understand why many think it’s the best and their favorite.

My brother and I got this game for Christmas in 1990. This is still one of my favorite games to this day. I still have it, and my own kids have enjoyed hours of playing it as well. Truly they made a masterpiece.

These were some of the happiest days of my life. Playing SMB3 was a family activity for me, my cousin, and my uncle. I never owned the game as a kid, as they only ever rented games. But we still managed to beat it. This and the 1990 Mario show were awesome. I had jumping Mario for years until it broke. And I had a Super Mario Bros. 3 birthday cake with figurines on it.
I remember bugging the shit out of my grandparents till they would rent this for me the week it came out and I played it so long and pushed the buttons so much that I get blisters on my thumbs. Its still in my top 3 of the best games ever.
I didn't know Famicom stood for Family Computer until this video. I also didn't know about the ability to turn into a statue, the white mushroom house or that Mario Bros. mini game until now. I've been playing this game for decades and I still find new things about it.

One of my favorite from the NES times. I had to ask my father for the money and I got it. Went right to the shop. It was a magical time :-). Seeing the boxart and played the first 2 mario games and then this gem
Awesome. I still have my dads. I had to buy games again because they weren’t with the console and I have no idea what happened to them. Had to either repair or replace the pins (can’t remember which I did), but it still works and I love it. Played it a lot together and with my brother as kids. I’m younger than the nes era myself, but I also have my own n64 from when I was a kid that I still play too. Same deal about not having my old games though. Weird
What takes this game beyond great, to me, is the replayability of it *plus* the fact that it rewards you with that amazing music for playing it to completion. When I was a kid, I would play it every so often just to hear that song.
I like your presentation and narration style, it's professional and easy to listen to - you don't sound desperate for the viewer's attention and the content is strong enough to hold its own without speed-talking or forced intensity. For a 1985 born player like myself, there's nothing new for me here but I enjoy watching regardless and I'm always looking for channels like this.

Toejam&Earl I just think David means since he played SM3 as a kid while it was out it probably has been an interest to him where he’s already consumed the history of the title. Being born in 1980 I too was around for the launch and the game is one of my favorites so I have seen all the history on it before too. But, GTV does a fantastic job on these videos so it’s a pleasure to see it all again and there are some new things I didn’t know in most of GTVs history videos.
On the Mario Happy Meals, I'll have you know I'm almost 40 and I STILL get the toys whenever they have them on offer like the 1up mushroom (that even makes the noise when you push the button underneath) or the light-up invincible mario! but I have to say SMB3 is probably close to my all time favorite in the series!

When you take a look at the gameplay/graphics/music of other games on the NES and competing systems in the 80's around the same time as Super Mario Bros 3, it seems like this game made a quantum leap in every aspect of the game. It looks like a game that was YEARS ahead of anything else in it's day and it still holds up today in 2019 as one of the greatest video games ever made, if not THE best video game of all time. The gameplay is so polished and refined that simply MOVING YOUR CHARACTER is one of the core things that makes it so fun. The varied level locations were unlike anything else, the music complimented the gameplay perfectly, the bonuses and secret areas were revolutionary. This game was like something from the future. A testament to INCREDIBLE game design from every department.
I absolutely love Super Mario Bros 3. It has been my favorite video game since I was 8 years old. I'm 39 now and still play it. I never get enough. I have so many fun memories of playing. Greatest video game ever.
I’m from the UK and it released here in August 1991. By the time the game dropped here, the anticipation that had been brewing for around 2 years (for us) was at peak level.. Can you imagine waiting 25% of your entire lifetime for a game- a game you already know a lot about and it still delivering in every aspect!? This game was a phenomenal production and a testament to the genius of the staff who created it. I was more hyped for this than I was for my snes which I got around a year later. Thanks for this video, brought back so many memories! I love that you emphasised the long wait us kids had to ‘endure’- I’ll be sure to check out your Mario All-Stars vid when I get a chance too! 👍🏼

Smb3 is my favorite game of all time, i played in my NES, they were gifts of a family friend. As a memory to share, there was a time when my parents and my uncle and aunt were playing it My parents were in team mario and my uncle and aunt in team luigi taking turns. My uncle was so bad at the matching minigame, always the 3 faces were diferent, and when he matched all 3 for the first time he jumped in bliss...... and pulled the cord of the controller pulling the consle and kicking it by mistake. Obviously the game crashed and they lost all their progress.
This game helped shape my childhood,and like you said,the magic is still there 30 years later. I still play the game,remembering a little boy sitting on the floor infront of his yellow colored black and white tv playing it over and over again.to this day i still think its the best game ever made
I remember when my cousin got this for his birthday when it first came out. Somehow his Dad knew about the white block secret, I don't know how the hell he knew that. This was pre-internet. Still play this sometimes, maybe after this video. Good work

I figured out the white block on my own. When I was younger, before I had access to the internet and any game pro magazines, I would play stages over and over trying to find any secrets. I found out getting all the coins in world 1-4 gives you an extra matching game.
That’s great! Have you noticed easy modes appearing on switch? I wonder if there will be one for Mario 3. Also if you don’t know once you finish the game you get 28 p wings if you don’t hard reset the game after and just push start after the ending. Makes the game fun for a crazy second play thru
12:37 Holy crap. Mario swinging Bowser around by his tail in a Japanese tv commercial many years before SM64! Was that a regular thing in Japanese Mario culture? I don't remember that being a thing in the US but that would mean that when you swing Bowser around in 64 it may have been a bit of fanservice also because people had already seen it and thought it looked cool on tv. Can someone tell me more about this?
I don’t the game was meant to copy the commercial but peach’s castle as it appears in 64 shows up in a manga book from 1990 and Mario grows gigantic like New SMB in the same series. All very weird.
i play that game so much as a kid that it had force me to wear glasses for the rest of my life. :) always playing the game, angering my father in the process, memory mark forever in my brain and eyes.
i never had a copy as a kid but i remember waiting and waiting and waiting for the video rental place inside the lobby of the movie theater to have a copy in stock - and one day, it was finally there. I vividly remember pulling that yellow box down off the wall after months of nintendo power hype had left me nearly rabid for the game. It was great. The only video game experience that I would say that matched that level of anticipation was when Mario 64 came out. I eventually bought a copy off a kid when people were offloading NES stuff in the N64/PSX days when i was fat with rock-picking and detassling money.

Man where do I start?! Greatest video game of all time and my favorite of all time. Beautiful, fun memories playing Mario 3. In my opinion it's everything a game should be. Video games before this were still fun but primitive looking. SMB3 came along with beautiful graphics, excellent gameplay, challenges, tons of secrets, powerups, complexity, fun and hours of great gameplay. I remember playing this with my brother, cousins, and friends growing up. I beat it in...I believe it was 1992. Every kid at school loved this game. It defined a generation. I bought it on Gameboy Advance and also had it on the Wii. I can't say enough about Mario 3. It sits on the throne and changed how I looked at life and video games. Every world and level brings back memories. Desert land and Ice land are probably my favorites. I've always been a big Mario fan and always will be. GOAT.
I love how you used songs from and talked about Nintendo GSM Super Mario Bros.3, I love that album! It shows how popular and important Super Mario Bros.3 was. The arrangements are cool using 80s synths and actual samples from the game itself! Plus the final Original BGM medley at the end of the album.
I remember going to the video game rental store all the time when I was 13 and although they had dozens of copies of the game, they were always rented out. When I was finally able to rent it. My friend and I stayed up late at night playing and made it to world 8 but couldn't beat it. Now I play the game about 5 times a year and beat it all the time with 99 lives left at the end.
Nice! Yea I always wondered about how rental stores handled things. A game would have to be rented out 20-25 times to break even and most of that would be weekends so that’s about 6 months. I’m sure Mario 3 has to problems though. Thanks for watching 🍃
Thank you so very much for this. It was August the 30th 1990 when a cousin of mine came home from the states w/Mario 3. At that moment I did not know what an NES was and this was my first game ever. This is such a complete game, it has it all: you go airborne, you can swim, hunted houses, mini, mid and final bosses for each world. Everything that came afterwards had to build up Mario 3 willing or un-willingly. It is just a testament to its creator's genius, gaming as a whole and fandom. As you guys also said, it was a cultural phenomena you would come across an entire universe of Mario related products anywhere: clothing, adds, happy meals, cartoons, posters...everything. God 32 yrs now, I just can't believe it.
one of the best games ever made to date and still going strong..oh the hours and fun in the 90s ive had with this game.. im 37 years old now and thank you for taking me back to a way of life i wished still existed instead of this trash world we live in now

Gaijillionaire Ah Super Mario Bros. 3 The very first game I ever owned. My story with Video Games begins when as a toddler my cousin saw me toddle and I discovered their Nintendo Entertainment System. So for kicks and giggles they popped in Duck Hunt and handed me the gun controller. Eventually they played Super Mario Bros 1 . I was hooked, I do wonder if I became the kid that wouldn’t leave as I believe my Aunt told my parents to get a Nintendo just to have at home as I was fanboy, a very young fanboy. So one day (between January 1991-December 1992, sadly I don’t exactly remember when). Mom Dad and I got in the car late at night drove to the mall and we picked up our Very Own Nintendo Entertainment System and the light gun too. I was beyond happy as a little boy getting my first Video Game System, next to my Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street toys I just couldn’t wait to play (but I had to) and they couldn’t wait to play together as a Family Super Mario Bros. & Duck Hunt..... Except, That wasn’t the version of the NES they bought.... It was the Challenge Set, I wouldn’t be playing Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt.... I would be Playing Super Mario Bros. 3 At first after hooking up the system and playing the game seeing Super Mario Bros. 3 They freaked out. as it wasn’t SMB1/Duck Hunt they thought I’d hate it they disappoint me etc... but they were shocked to see I was playing it and having fun. I don’t know if I knew at first it was a sequel to SMB1 but I must have thought it a cool new adventure to play on the Nintendo. But when I figured it out I loved it. It didn’t remedy me being the Kid that wouldn’t leave as my cousins then wanted to babysit me just to play SMB3. But 26-28 years later, that NES is still hooked to my TV and the keystone to my video game collection is that very same cartridge of Super Mario Bros 3.
my first game, besides Super Mario Bros 1/Duck Hunt that was in every NES bundle, was Super Mario Bros 2. When I heard of Super Mario Bros 3 I was extremely excited. I didn't even KNOW there was a 16 bit console at the time (Genesis.) 1989 and 1990 were the years I was Mario 3 CRAZY, drawing Mario 3 maps and characters in my notebooks or putting stickers everywhere... I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so I was there for every Mario release. I may have been too young for Donkey Kong in the arcades, but I do remember the Saturday Supercade show fondly. You know that "eat, drink, sleep nintendo" SNES commercial from Toys R Us? That was about me as a little girl. I was Mario and Nintendo obsessed.
Rosemary Marie excellent story, Funny thing, I didn’t get SMB 2 (USA) till about Summer 92, then I asked Mom if one day we’d get that Mario 2 game i saw on the TV (which was Super Mario Land 2). But there it was for the Nintendo Entertainment System. We picked it up and pushed play, It was a fun game to play after swimming in the pool and waiting for the cartoon to come on TV. Along with SMB 3 & SMB 1/Duck Hunt. Its Odd looking back that I played that game the same year Japan got the game.

Playing SMB3 when it first came out, it was a biblical moment for me. The game’s world felt much larger in scope than it really was. Damn. I have my Switch with me as I type. I’m going to play it right now.
My favorite memory of Super Mario Bros 3 is beating it 100% for the first time ever with my grandma, sister and cousin at 3 am after 9 hours of playing a Japanese copy of it

Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the first games I've played back in 1998. I was 3 years old in the summer and I remembered it well. When i was 18, I got the set up again to play again. I finally beat the game too. In my 20s, i finally completed the game including all 3 whistles. It was a great time tbh.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of my favorite NES game. However with no save on the original NES version you have to beat the game in one sitting which is extremely long. The SNES version added a save feature using a lithium battery which makes the game more forgiving.
@@MrFrost-xh6rf That's right but we only discovered all 3 warp whistles years after we bought the game. Google didn't exist in 1988 so we learned them from friends which had been passed on from person to person.
When I played this with my dad as a kid it took us a few weeks to complete. We just kept the NES powered on with the game left in it and unplugged the cord going to the TV when not playing. A couple of times we did actually unplug the wrong cord by accident and one time the power went out. After that happened a couple of time we just warped to world 7 and went from there haha. So it wasn't the perfect solution but we made it in the end. Lol
I remember leaving the new on all night n hoped when you got back from school, the Nintendo didn t overhear or get bumped getting the flashing color screen before having to blow on it and start over. Which stage is harder level seven pipe stage or level 8?
Still till this very day, post Mario Odyssey, Mario 3 is my favorite Mario game of all time. No Mario game has ever come close. Everything that game had for an NES game was amazing. The soundtrack is so beautiful and iconic. Love that game. Excellent video by the way.
It’s pretty good! I remember it was played a lot of Nickelodeon a few years after but they cut a few things out like the scene in the casino. I always felt bad for the glasses girl who lost video Armageddon because she barely got any screen time. Thanks for watching 🍃

Wow! A whole video on Super Mario Bros 3, it's history and legacy. Perhaps the best thing in this video was the discussion on the two year gap between the japanese and american release of the game. You talked about how other magazine publications covered the topic (there weren't many, and they had yet to reach the popularity of Nintendo Power at the time.) Thanks so much! While I do present facts I always try to frame it from the viewpoint I had growing up and using the hindsight that we have now. But I noticed going back in old NP issues that after other magazines got really big they started admitting decisions were made in Japan. But still it was much a state run newspaper so to speak.
It's really the controls that still amaze me. When you play other games on the system you really see the contrast... movement was just so fluid, easy, and deep. Really, I just can't recall ever once feeling that I'd been cheated by shoddy controls or something when dying in that game. That's a small miracle for the era, especially given the incredible amount of powerups that changed your abilities and pace in a time where you'd be lucky to have two speeds to work with in most games lol

Yes for sure, all these media pick the content they want, but i know a lot of french youtube creator that push a bit their content on these media. (like the simple fact of emailling or twitting them when you have new stuff...) you would be amazed (in a bad way) by the non pro-active posture a lot of journalist have...they wait for press release, or are subbed to Game Press, a website/hub for every press release, trailer, official statements etc... and are not realy actively searching for content. (some are subbed on youtube to your channel, but it's not the majority. Everyday i encounter collegues that aren't looking realy for content. Or only on other major outlet. Cool! There’s one tip I left out and that is if you beat the game (and DONT reset) you get 28 p-wings on the next play through. On switch you can save state and then really have a fun go on the second time
Mario 3 was clearly better than Super Mario World. The hype was infinitely greater, it didn't feel rushed, had a bigger soundtrack with better composed music, had alot more than 3 powerups
Very much agree with this comment. If felt (too me) that Nintendo may have rushed Super Mario World because they failed to see the impact Sega would have on the US market with both the Sega Genesis and Yuji Naka's Sonic the Hedgehog. They went from having a commanding albiet illegal hold on the market at 90% to a 40% sub 40% market share in 1991/1992. For reference I owned both consoles the year they came out (1989 and 1991). I always preferred my Genesis over the Snes especially when it came to platformers. The first Sonic was an amazing title that really made people take notice of Sega and their much edgier angrier vibe and I loved it; However, it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that showed Sega knew how to make a platformer without compromises. What a time to be a gamer!
I agree with this comment as well. My wife and I love SMB 3 and play it to this day. Its just something about this game that keeps it a classic. I love Mario World but would choose SMB 3 over it any day.

My dad was a merchant marine at the time of the release in Japan and brought it home with an adapter so we could play it in the states. With the official strategy guide in hand, my brothers and I spent EVERY ounce of free time in the mushroom kingdom. We were gods on the playground with our knowledge. By the time it dropped in the US, I was the go to guy for tips and tricks! Hands down my favorite game of all time

My late dad had bought a NES for me when I was a child. To this day my sister and I always reminesce over our childhood especially over Christmas holidays where we'd spend hours playing Super Mario Bros 3. One of the most iconic and memorable part of my childhood that I'll never forget ❤️

SMB 3 is truely a timeless masterpiece. My brother abd I spent so many hours playing tgis game. I could never get past the "angry sun level" as a kid. The accomplishement I felt beating the first ship I will never forget. I felt like I grew up a bit that day.

Use can use rca cables on an original nes. Just yellow and white, but red is ok too. If you have a model 2 nes though it probably won’t work.

Mario 3 is one of my all time favorite games, and yes The Wizard was one of the reasons I wanted it. Super Mario World came out later and has much more exploration to it, but Mario 3, it feels more "magical" to me. The worlds, power-ups, and enemies were more creative despite its simpler 8-bit presentation.
I feel the same! Something about a trilogy and while 16 bit was out there most of us hadn’t experienced it yet plus the hype machine behind it makes finally getting the game amazing
Not to downplay world but that was more of a snes tech demo like the original smb, it was our introduction to the super Nintendo and how it worked. SMB3 was the finale of the Nes, pulling out all the tricks they had learned over the years.. I think that's why SMB3 feels more of a complete package

By the way I. The thank you letter in the Jp manual they mention that the 2 whistles in world 1 are a way to quickly return to your last place played because they couldn’t put in a battery save. Don’t know why they couldn’t but that’s pretty cool of them

I didn't always get along with the neighbor kids growing up, but this game brought us together. We all loved it. After you've beaten the game, there was so much hidden in the game afterwards. This was a really solid documentary. Great job man. My story: This was my birthday present, Sept. 1990. I turned 9. My mom went broke making sure I had a copy and it was the last major NES game I got before Sega Genesis changed my life. This is the first time I've heard the Japanese side of things!

Super Mario 3 is the only game I've ever loved to play and got the same level of enjoyment out of watching others play it too.
I’m 34 so my very first memories of SMB 3/SMB/Duck Hunt, TMNT NES games in general were originally me hitting buttons not knowing what I was doing. My cousins would just give me a controller when they babysat me to keep me occupied.
My grandpa bought a Snes at launch and Super Mario World. That was the first game I remember actually understanding what I was doing, getting fully engrossed in a game and falling in love with gaming. I ended up beating it before I started kindergarten. SMW is still my favorite 2d platformer of all time. Well a few years later my Snes collection had grown huge but I vaguely remembered the system that came before. I ended up finding and buying an NES with about ten games at a garage sale. SMB3 was one of those games. Most of the games were tough for me to play after truly growing up on a 16 bit system but SMB3 was the exception. It was more Mario platforming goodness and I was shocked how well a game on this older hardware still played perfectly and held up. I also loved the creativity in the world/level design. I loved how the difficulty was a bit tougher than World. I loved the creativity of the power ups. World is still my favorite 2d platformer and Mario game but 3 is literally right behind it and I can understand why many think it’s the best and their favorite.

My brother and I got this game for Christmas in 1990. This is still one of my favorite games to this day. I still have it, and my own kids have enjoyed hours of playing it as well. Truly they made a masterpiece.

These were some of the happiest days of my life. Playing SMB3 was a family activity for me, my cousin, and my uncle. I never owned the game as a kid, as they only ever rented games. But we still managed to beat it. This and the 1990 Mario show were awesome. I had jumping Mario for years until it broke. And I had a Super Mario Bros. 3 birthday cake with figurines on it.

I remember bugging the shit out of my grandparents till they would rent this for me the week it came out and I played it so long and pushed the buttons so much that I get blisters on my thumbs. Its still in my top 3 of the best games ever.
I didn't know Famicom stood for Family Computer until this video. I also didn't know about the ability to turn into a statue, the white mushroom house or that Mario Bros. mini game until now. I've been playing this game for decades and I still find new things about it.

I grew up with the NES and I still have the one my siblings and I got in the late 80s.
Awesome. I still have my dads. I had to buy games again because they weren’t with the console and I have no idea what happened to them. Had to either repair or replace the pins (can’t remember which I did), but it still works and I love it. Played it a lot together and with my brother as kids. I’m younger than the nes era myself, but I also have my own n64 from when I was a kid that I still play too. Same deal about not having my old games though. Weird

What takes this game beyond great, to me, is the replayability of it *plus* the fact that it rewards you with that amazing music for playing it to completion. When I was a kid, I would play it every so often just to hear that song.

Toejam&Earl I just think David means since he played SM3 as a kid while it was out it probably has been an interest to him where he’s already consumed the history of the title. Being born in 1980 I too was around for the launch and the game is one of my favorites so I have seen all the history on it before too. But, GTV does a fantastic job on these videos so it’s a pleasure to see it all again and there are some new things I didn’t know in most of GTVs history videos.

When you take a look at the gameplay/graphics/music of other games on the NES and competing systems in the 80's around the same time as Super Mario Bros 3, it seems like this game made a quantum leap in every aspect of the game. It looks like a game that was YEARS ahead of anything else in it's day and it still holds up today in 2019 as one of the greatest video games ever made, if not THE best video game of all time. The gameplay is so polished and refined that simply MOVING YOUR CHARACTER is one of the core things that makes it so fun. The varied level locations were unlike anything else, the music complimented the gameplay perfectly, the bonuses and secret areas were revolutionary. This game was like something from the future. A testament to INCREDIBLE game design from every department.

Can you imagine waiting 25% of your entire lifetime for a game- a game you already know a lot about and it still delivering in every aspect!?
This game was a phenomenal production and a testament to the genius of the staff who created it.
I was more hyped for this than I was for my snes which I got around a year later.

Smb3 is my favorite game of all time, i played in my NES, they were gifts of a family friend.
As a memory to share, there was a time when my parents and my uncle and aunt were playing it My parents were in team mario and my uncle and aunt in team luigi taking turns. My uncle was so bad at the matching minigame, always the 3 faces were diferent, and when he matched all 3 for the first time he jumped in bliss...... and pulled the cord of the controller pulling the consle and kicking it by mistake.
Obviously the game crashed and they lost all their progress.

I figured out the white block on my own. When I was younger, before I had access to the internet and any game pro magazines, I would play stages over and over trying to find any secrets. I found out getting all the coins in world 1-4 gives you an extra matching game.
Even my 8 year old son loves playing Super Mario Bros 3 on the Switch. Great game. Great nostalgia.

I don't remember that being a thing in the US but that would mean that when you swing Bowser around in 64 it may have been a bit of fanservice also because people had already seen it and thought it looked cool on tv. Can someone tell me more about this?
I don’t the game was meant to copy the commercial but peach’s castle as it appears in 64 shows up in a manga book from 1990 and Mario grows gigantic like New SMB in the same series. All very weird.

i never had a copy as a kid but i remember waiting and waiting and waiting for the video rental place inside the lobby of the movie theater to have a copy in stock - and one day, it was finally there. I vividly remember pulling that yellow box down off the wall after months of nintendo power hype had left me nearly rabid for the game. It was great. The only video game experience that I would say that matched that level of anticipation was when Mario 64 came out. I eventually bought a copy off a kid when people were offloading NES stuff in the N64/PSX days when i was fat with rock-picking and detassling money.

It just brings back so many great fond memories, and is such a beautiful part of my childhood, along with the NES system as a whole. Man where do I start?! Greatest video game of all time and my favorite of all time. Beautiful, fun memories playing Mario 3. In my opinion it's everything a game should be. Video games before this were still fun but primitive looking. SMB3 came along with beautiful graphics, excellent gameplay, challenges, tons of secrets, powerups, complexity, fun and hours of great gameplay. I remember playing this with my brother, cousins, and friends growing up. I beat it in...I believe it was 1992. Every kid at school loved this game. It defined a generation. I bought it on Gameboy Advance and also had it on the Wii. I can't say enough about Mario 3. It sits on the throne and changed how I looked at life and video games. Every world and level brings back memories. Desert land and Ice land are probably my favorites. I've always been a big Mario fan and always will be. GOAT.

I love how you used songs from and talked about Nintendo GSM Super Mario Bros.3, I love that album! It shows how popular and important Super Mario Bros.3 was. The arrangements are cool using 80s synths and actual samples from the game itself! Plus the final Original BGM medley at the end of the album.

I remember going to the video game rental store all the time when I was 13 and although they had dozens of copies of the game, they were always rented out. When I was finally able to rent it. My friend and I stayed up late at night playing and made it to world 8 but couldn't beat it. Now I play the game about 5 times a year and beat it all the time with 99 lives left at the end.
Nice! Yea I always wondered about how rental stores handled things. A game would have to be rented out 20-25 times to break even and most of that would be weekends so that’s about 6 months. I’m sure Mario 3 has to problems though. Thanks for watching 🍃

Thank you so very much for this. It was August the 30th 1990 when a cousin of mine came home from the states w/Mario 3. At that moment I did not know what an NES was and this was my first game ever. This is such a complete game, it has it all: you go airborne, you can swim, hunted houses, mini, mid and final bosses for each world. Everything that came afterwards had to build up Mario 3 willing or un-willingly. It is just a testament to its creator's genius, gaming as a whole and fandom. As you guys also said, it was a cultural phenomena you would come across an entire universe of Mario related products anywhere: clothing, adds, happy meals, cartoons, posters...everything. God 32 yrs now, I just can't believe it.

Gaijillionaire Ah Super Mario Bros. 3 The very first game I ever owned.
My story with Video Games begins when as a toddler my cousin saw me toddle and I discovered their Nintendo Entertainment System. So for kicks and giggles they popped in Duck Hunt and handed me the gun controller. Eventually they played Super Mario Bros 1 .
I was hooked, I do wonder if I became the kid that wouldn’t leave as I believe my Aunt told my parents to get a Nintendo just to have at home as I was fanboy, a very young fanboy.
So one day (between January 1991-December 1992, sadly I don’t exactly remember when). Mom Dad and I got in the car late at night drove to the mall and we picked up our Very Own Nintendo Entertainment System and the light gun too.
I was beyond happy as a little boy getting my first Video Game System, next to my Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street toys I just couldn’t wait to play (but I had to) and they couldn’t wait to play together as a Family Super Mario Bros. & Duck Hunt.....
Except, That wasn’t the version of the NES they bought.... It was the Challenge Set, I wouldn’t be playing Super Mario Bros. or Duck Hunt.... I would be Playing Super Mario Bros. 3
At first after hooking up the system and playing the game seeing Super Mario Bros. 3 They freaked out. as it wasn’t SMB1/Duck Hunt they thought I’d hate it they disappoint me etc... but they were shocked to see I was playing it and having fun. I don’t know if I knew at first it was a sequel to SMB1 but I must have thought it a cool new adventure to play on the Nintendo. But when I figured it out I loved it.
It didn’t remedy me being the Kid that wouldn’t leave as my cousins then wanted to babysit me just to play SMB3. But 26-28 years later, that NES is still hooked to my TV and the keystone to my video game collection is that very same cartridge of Super Mario Bros 3.
my first game, besides Super Mario Bros 1/Duck Hunt that was in every NES bundle, was Super Mario Bros 2. When I heard of Super Mario Bros 3 I was extremely excited. I didn't even KNOW there was a 16 bit console at the time (Genesis.) 1989 and 1990 were the years I was Mario 3 CRAZY, drawing Mario 3 maps and characters in my notebooks or putting stickers everywhere...
I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so I was there for every Mario release. I may have been too young for Donkey Kong in the arcades, but I do remember the Saturday Supercade show fondly. You know that "eat, drink, sleep nintendo" SNES commercial from Toys R Us? That was about me as a little girl. I was Mario and Nintendo obsessed.
Rosemary Marie excellent story, Funny thing, I didn’t get SMB 2 (USA) till about Summer 92, then I asked Mom if one day we’d get that Mario 2 game i saw on the TV (which was Super Mario Land 2). But there it was for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
We picked it up and pushed play, It was a fun game to play after swimming in the pool and waiting for the cartoon to come on TV. Along with SMB 3 & SMB 1/Duck Hunt.
Its Odd looking back that I played that game the same year Japan got the game.

I remember being 12 (almost 13) years old at the time and the anticipation of the release of this game was intense. It was the game that many kids were talking about at my middle school at the time. There was even a rumor that SMB3 couldn't be beat lol. Those kids in this video were around my age at the time and now they are in their late 30's-early 40's.
We would have probably been in the same grade or ride the same bus. I don’t know what kids get hyped about today but for our generation SMB 3 was it. No contest. Thanks for watching!

Playing SMB3 when it first came out, it was a biblical moment for me. The game’s world felt much larger in scope than it really was. Damn. I have my Switch with me as I type. I’m going to play it right now.

My favorite memory of Super Mario Bros 3 is beating it 100% for the first time ever with my grandma, sister and cousin at 3 am after 9 hours of playing a Japanese copy of it

Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the first games I've played back in 1998. I was 3 years old in the summer and I remembered it well. When i was 18, I got the set up again to play again. I finally beat the game too. In my 20s, i finally completed the game including all 3 whistles. It was a great time tbh.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of my favorite NES game. However with no save on the original NES version you have to beat the game in one sitting which is extremely long. The SNES version added a save feature using a lithium battery which makes the game more forgiving.
At least the warp whistles let you catch back up.

@@MrFrost-xh6rf That's right but we only discovered all 3 warp whistles years after we bought the game. Google didn't exist in 1988 so we learned them from friends which had been passed on from person to person.
When I played this with my dad as a kid it took us a few weeks to complete. We just kept the NES powered on with the game left in it and unplugged the cord going to the TV when not playing.
A couple of times we did actually unplug the wrong cord by accident and one time the power went out. After that happened a couple of time we just warped to world 7 and went from there haha. So it wasn't the perfect solution but we made it in the end. Lol
I remember leaving the new on all night n hoped when you got back from school, the Nintendo didn t overhear or get bumped getting the flashing color screen before having to blow on it and start over. Which stage is harder level seven pipe stage or level 8?
Still till this very day, post Mario Odyssey, Mario 3 is my favorite Mario game of all time. No Mario game has ever come close. Everything that game had for an NES game was amazing. The soundtrack is so beautiful and iconic. Love that game. Excellent video by the way.

Wow! A whole video on Super Mario Bros 3, it's history and legacy. Perhaps the best thing in this video was the discussion on the two year gap between the japanese and american release of the game. You talked about how other magazine publications covered the topic (there weren't many, and they had yet to reach the popularity of Nintendo Power at the time.) Another awesome video by Gaijillionaire.
Thanks so much! While I do present facts I always try to frame it from the viewpoint I had growing up and using the hindsight that we have now. But I noticed going back in old NP issues that after other magazines got really big they started admitting decisions were made in Japan. But still it was much a state run newspaper so to speak.
A watershed moment in the life of every 80's kid. Still one of the greatest games of all time.

It's really the controls that still amaze me. When you play other games on the system you really see the contrast... movement was just so fluid, easy, and deep.
Really, I just can't recall ever once feeling that I'd been cheated by shoddy controls or something when dying in that game. That's a small miracle for the era, especially given the incredible amount of powerups that changed your abilities and pace in a time where you'd be lucky to have two speeds to work with in most games lol

@@GTV-Japan : thanks, i'm always delighted to share your stuff on my media and the french gaming media were i work, it's not Kotaku or Polygon, but any little help is precious ;) ! Yes for sure, all these media pick the content they want, but i know a lot of french youtube creator that push a bit their content on these media. (like the simple fact of emailling or twitting them when you have new stuff...) you would be amazed (in a bad way) by the non pro-active posture a lot of journalist have...they wait for press release, or are subbed to Game Press, a website/hub for every press release, trailer, official statements etc... and are not realy actively searching for content. (some are subbed on youtube to your channel, but it's not the majority. Everyday i encounter collegues that aren't looking realy for content. Or only on other major outlet. So, maybe take contact with some community managers for these sites, or just email them your new vid ! i'm sure it will help ;)

Cool! There’s one tip I left out and that is if you beat the game (and DONT reset) you get 28 p-wings on the next play through. On switch you can save state and then really have a fun go on the second time

Mario 3 was clearly better than Super Mario World. The hype was infinitely greater, it didn't feel rushed, had a bigger soundtrack with better composed music, had alot more than 3 powerups

Very much agree with this comment. If felt (too me) that Nintendo may have rushed Super Mario World because they failed to see the impact Sega would have on the US market with both the Sega Genesis and Yuji Naka's Sonic the Hedgehog. They went from having a commanding albiet illegal hold on the market at 90% to a 40% sub 40% market share in 1991/1992.
For reference I owned both consoles the year they came out (1989 and 1991). I always preferred my Genesis over the Snes especially when it came to platformers. The first Sonic was an amazing title that really made people take notice of Sega and their much edgier angrier vibe and I loved it; However, it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that showed Sega knew how to make a platformer without compromises. What a time to be a gamer!

I agree with this comment as well. My wife and I love SMB 3 and play it to this day. Its just something about this game that keeps it a classic. I love Mario World but would choose SMB 3 over it any day.
