I’ve been playing Mario games since Donkey Kong was brand new (45 year old here). The one thing I’ve always been able to count on is the consistency of the quality and my enjoyment of them. As I get older and think I’m on the cusp of outgrowing Nintendo or games in general… the latest Mario game comes out and I end up enjoying it with the same awe and wonder and mental joy today as I did back in the mid 1980s. I’m finding that once again as I make my way through Wonder. it feels uncanny, there’s almost nothing else in life that I still enjoy the same way as I did when I was 6 years old, I don’t enjoy the same music, tv shows, or other childish things from when I was 6, but Mario… that’s a different story. I still feel the same giddy excitement, joy, and wonder with each new Mario game as I did as a young child. I never grow out of it!

I was on the cusp of sticking into the retro games, and maybe giving up on games altogether because I don’t like the direction that both Microsoft and Sonia are taking PlayStation and Xbox with the live service rubbish, and then I got my Nintendo switch and it made me fall back in love with gaming again Nintendo have a back of that to me for all the years probably since the N64 for me the Mario games I’ve kept free coming back to Nintendo years. I’ve realised I’ve had more Nintendo systems done any other systems, even if it’s mostly the handheld systems and four of their home systems in the NES, SNES, N64, Nintendo Wii I’m currently the Nintendo switch.

My 40lb 3 year old finally pulled my back real good, so I’ve been laid up for three days watching Nintendo retrospectives on my phone. I’ve watched a ton of your retrospectives these past 48 hours your passion for this stuff is always contagious. I got 3D Land back in the 8th grade. I was sick at home with Strep and had a high fever. My Mom comes home and says she got my medicine. It was a copy of Super Mario 3D Land and a copy of the strategy guide. I fully beat the first 8 world's that night, and as I thought it was over, I found an extra 8 world's and a final hard level that pushed me to my limits of 3D Land's friendly but ever changing knowledge barrier.
3D Land will always be special to me. It got me through a time where I was incredibly sick and struggling with school. Easily a 10 out of 10 game in every regard

I'm a bit of a younger gamer, but it took a while before I was introduced into the Mario series. Super Mario 3D Land was one of the first ever platforming Mario game that I'd ever played, and ever since then I've been hooked on both new and older titles. I can hardly believe that 3D World is 10 years old already! I'm surprised that you made a video on something so recently, yet at the same time it can be considered old? The music choice is excellent too, fitting the flow of the video. Both games are fantastic and I hold a lot of special memories about them. Thank you for making a video on these games.

I was a "first played Nintendo games on the Atari 2600" Gen-X kid who never left. Loved my N64. Never owned a PS1. To this day I love both 2D and 3D Mario.
And Mario 64 was even at the time considered to be a colossal achievement in 3-d gaming. And since it was the first 3D Mario game, those people praising the game weren't the kids who grew up with 3D Mario.
    I think you're over-simplifying and over-exaggerating with the claims in Act 1.

I'm in my early-20s. I grew up playing a Gameboy Advance as early as I could remember. Early on, my brain was wired for the short, tight, arcade-y experiences offered by 16 and 32-bit games. Sure, I had a Wii (and loved it dearly), but most 3D exploration-style games simply didn't hold my attention the same way Mario Advance or New Super Mario had.
When the Wii U launched and 3D World dropped soon after, I was over the moon! It was the exact type of gameplay I loved, with the gorgeous visuals of a home console game. The Wii U, despite most of my peers then and now bemoaning it as emblematic of everything wrong with Nintendo, held my attention like few consoles had or have since.
This video had me grinning from ear-to-ear, it's great to know I'm not totally alone in my feelings.

When you mentioned about the gap between 2D Mario and 3D Mario games I remembered a flash game called "Super Mario 63" which is the total opposite of Super Mario 3D Land, a 2D collectaton with a mix of Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy, something that Nintendo would never do because it can cause confusion around players.

Never fell out of the series loved 64 when I got it for Christmas. There's something special about the curated obstacle courses that I think the Galaxy and these games capture so well. However I think if Nintendo were to remake or re-release a Mario game that hasnt been done yet Galaxy 2 is going to take precedent over 3D Land.

Like, don't get me wrong, I like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. But, when I look at the 2D games, I always feel like, compared to them, they are games from different franchises. This is why I always hated when people said Mario had a good transition to 3D, I would always be like: "No, nothing from the 2D games made the cut, except for an italian plumber jumping around".

I know a lot of people who left Nintendo for Playstation. Personally, I did just after the Gamecube. I don't know any of them, however, who did so because the 3D of Mario 64 was supposedly unbearable. All this is flawed with our 2023 eyes, it was magic back then. Even for those who didn't own an N64.

Yeah, I've heard channels I like say that Super Mario 64 wasn't good and that's BS! I heard one channel say if it was Super Barbie 64 nobody would like it because it wasn't good and Mario fooled people into thinking it was a good game...while also praising Super Mario Sunshine, while a good game it's easily the worst Mario game, take Mario out of it and it would be a cool new franchise that at least gets a sequel to refine the flaws...honestly some Indie dev needs to make a true spiritual successor to it, A Hat in Time kinda is but complete with the water pak and upgradable nozzles.

    Very nice video.
Your closing hit me pretty hard. I too had the DS and later a 3DS, to Wii and then Wii U to now a Switch. When I do boot up my 3DS and play some old games like Mario and Luigi, or even farther back and play some Super Stars Super Saga, there is a wave of emotion and memories that comeback. Given I stayed playing my systems up until life events stopped me, and like you I packed up my Wii U because I got a Switch, but hearing about the history of some of these old games still bring back the memories. Seeing a screen it pulls my back like "oh, I remember I was doing this time at this event when I finished this level..." etc.
I don't know how to finish this... I'll just say good job. These little retrospectives and documentaries accomplish some nostalgia.

Great video, actually discovered this before I discovered you from the RC discord. Loved it, and especially enjoyed the details about "athletics" in Japan. I didn't quite know that until watching this. Super Mario 3D World was my dream Mario game since childhood for a variety of reasons. The way they translated the 3D to be more like the 2D games (which I actually think makes exploration more interesting and rewarding), being able to use multiple characters and with multiplayer. I'd have dreamed of that game as a child. 3D Land was great too.

Let’s play on the athletic” and I was like huh? Then it clicked. I loved the Wii U, and Super Mario 3D World was such a wonderful game. I don't usually bother doing everything in games, generally just content finishing them once and maybe replaying them again later if I really enjoyed them, but something about 3D World made me complete it 100%, even getting all the stickers. For year I've felt Mario game design has split between "complete the level" style of older 2D games and "find stuff" of the more non-linear 3D games, with Galaxy being more of a hybrid, and 3D Land and 3D World imagining what Mario games would be if the 2D games got a proper sequel, but in 3D. I enjoy pretty much all of the games, but I definitely like the "beat the level" structure more, and didn't quite vibe with SM64 or Sunshine. Odyssey was amazing, tho. Super Mario Wonder this year was an absolute delight, and the indirect shared co-operation of the online play with strangers was a wonderful addition.

Both these games hold special meaning to me. The 3DS is the system that brought me back to video games after almost a decade away...and 3D Land brings back some fond memories of that journey into, at the time, Nintendo's latest offerings. I never played the GBA or NDS, so Super Mario 64 was my last 'Mario' experience.
3D World made me realize how much of an affinity I had for Nintendo, after seeing their games in high definition for the first time. The colour, graphics and overall experience of playing SMB U and 3D World solidified that I knew I would always be a 'Nintendo fan boy' and I'm more than okay with that.

This is one of the best retrospectives I've seen on UA-cam in a long time. Thank you very much for the quality work you always put out. To me, Mario never got better than Super Mario Bros. 3. I liked Super Mario World and the New Super Mario games, but none of them surpassed the perfection that was SMB3. I didn't like Super Mario 64 when it was launched, and I never gave Sunshine a fair chance at the time. But then Super Mario Galaxy came and blew my mind, and it motivated me to go back to Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, and now I really like both of those games a lot. And then 3D Land and 3D World came out and hooked me immediately. Both are amazing games, and they feel a lot different from other Mario games. I also loved Odyssey and Wonder. Super Mario Bros. 3 will, however, always be the peak of the Mario gaming universe and probably the best platform game ever made.

another great video by GTV Japan, i love your retrospectives, i actually am 28 years old and was raised on the N64 and Gamecube, but i also had a Famiclone! which was a pirate machine that could use famicon style cartridges to play those 300 games in 1 with mostly NES and exclusive Famicom games and thats where i played the original Super Mario Bros and i loved how hard it was, it was weird when my sisters who actually owned an NES told me it was an old game! Then i had a Wii and it came with the virtual console and thats how i played classics like Castlevania and Mega man which somehow werent on my Famiclone but i fell in love with that era and game design.
I also just played 3D Land and 3D World this year and let me say they are masterpieces so i agree with all your points, but still for me Super Mario 64 is king!

I'm going to out myself as being on the younger side but I can't resist because the 3D land game holds some meaning. Back in 2012 one day, in my hometown, I saw a new strip of stores being constructed in a wal-mart plaza. I'll never forget, I saw one of the retail spaces on the end was a hibachi Japanese restaurant, but a mini one called "miyabi Jr." I went inside even though it was still under construction and these Japanese people were there. Surprisingly, they were really nice and liked how I was dressed because I was wearing a tucked in Polo which must have made a good impression. One of them was an owner and the other had practically just gotten off the plane from Japan, brought there to manage the new location. They sat me down and gave me the job with the opening crew. First job I ever had and with the first paycheck, I went next door to the gamestop and bought a red 3DS and new mario bros. 2. I was so torn between that one and 3d Land. I beat it easily and bought 3D Land next. The experience of that is more fun to look back on the game itself. It was a novelty that I enjoyed, nothing more. I associate the game with the first experience of earning something. I was a child in the gamecube days and played N64 as well as Gameboy and NES in an aunt's basement during summer visits. Am a modern Nintendo fan or older?? Maybe somewhere in the middle.. What am I??

40 year old here and my first console was the Sega Master System at 4 or 5 years old. So for me I didn't get an NES until Christmas of 1990 at 7 years old but I got to play all 3 versions of Mario at the same time especially Mario 3 since it had just come out. Now I did get to play Mario 64 at 13 years old when they had it on display at Best Buy a few months before the system even came out. That and Pilotwings 64 was what drove me into buying the N64 but I'll be honest in that when I rented the game I was so disappointed that for the first time I decided not to buy a Mario game for the first time ever. That carried over into the Gamecube era when I saw Mario Sunshine and by pictures alone I refused to even try it let alone by it. For a while I felt bitter and betrayed by Nintendo releasing classic mario games on their handhelds but not on their mainline systems. After the gamecube died I passed on the Wii for several years until New SMB came out where finally after damn there 2 decades we got a proper mainline console version of a mario game and that motivated me to buying the Wii, the Wii U for New SMB U. I didn't begin to start liking the 3D mario games until Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World. Figured I'd share my own anecdote as a Mario fan. 😎

Early millennials also grew up first with old NES and SNES before the 64.
Both types were always fun to me.
    SMB3 is still my favorite.

Good to hear! Honestly I moved to Japan so long ago and still kind of young that I haven’t actually had face to face talks with a millennial about how those people grew up. I have no idea what it was like to be a kid in the 2000s. And over here generations are counted a little differently. So only through comments here can I get an understanding about that. Usually younger people tell me their uncles gave them old games and were happy to have it or didn’t understand it was old at the time. Sounds like a fun time! My uncle only gave us old TVs he didn’t want any more! Mario 3 is still one of my favs but honestly it is getting old and there are continual new games that are great so anymore it’s more like I have to make an alphabetical list rather than rank

Yeah the millennial marking at least here is too long in my opinion, I have more in common with Gen X than someone on the tale end of millennials.. I didn’t have a cell phone till high school and remember a time before most people had internet. Lol😅

@acmnin2146 ha that’s fine. No problem there. Kids shouldn’t have cell phones. But a lot of those Gen Y-ers, they are just on another wavelength that I can’t understand

Very much reminded of my initial reaction to Super Mario 64, being turned off and confused. It took an hour or two before it clicked and I started loving it but part of me missed and feared the classic style might be forever lost. Thankfully that wasn't the case and even to this day Nintendo puts out some incredible Mario titles that bring me back to my childhood in the best way possible. And even the expansion on the formula, and topic of this video, is a really incredible expansion giving a great happy medium between the two styles. Thank you once again for yet another great look at a part of gaming history.

I am right in between the two groups you created. I grew up in the 4th gen, with the Super Nintendo. Super Mario World was the first video game I've ever seen or played, and it was all I ever played when I first got my Super Nintendo. I was quite young, so my mind got blown when I learned the system could play other games! (I saw someone play final fight, and was so confused that the SNES was playing something different.)
After that, I played the Super Mario All Stars, and then Mario Land 1, 2 & 3, Super Mario World 2, and finished my formative Mario experience with Mario 64. (Although I did like Banjo Kazooie more than Mario 64)

Thanks for sharing your experience and opinions! Much appreciated! I did kind of combine 8 and 16 bit together. Maybe they should be separated! But certainly the start of 3D is a clear dividing line

3:38 "Nintendo never says you lost a life" - They don't have to say it. Mario's body contracts with the agonized spasms of death, and his body falls away into the underworld. But they never actually say that jumping into lava is harmful, right?

I loved the 3DS. I remember as a kid I had to undergo vision therapy to make my eyes work together properly. As a result, as an adult, I never had the complaints others had about stereoscopic 3D movies, and when the 3DS came along with its 3D screen I was surprised to hear people say they immediately turned that 3D slider to off and never touched it again. I could play 3DS games with the 3D on all day if I had the time (not anymore due to neuropathy in my hands) without any of those headaches people complain of (and I am quite prone to headaches and migraines). Ah, how I miss new stereoscopic gaming experiences, but I'm glad I had that therapy as a kid, even if it was a pain at the time.
I also never stopped playing those 8 and 16-bit games even as the industry moved forward. New N64 games were expensive, but I could go to a yard sale and get NES and SNES games for cheap at the time, and later similarly discovered emulation. I also have fond memories of Jumping Flash on Playstation.

I never had headaches but playing in 3D on a busy train is hard because it shakes and moves and you lose focus, literally and figuratively. 😸

As someone who purchased Odyssey along with the Switch in 2017, I didn't know until now that the Mario Amiibo unlocks Rainbow Road music 👀
Anyway, I actually really enjoy both 3D Land and 3D Wörld a lot. Completed those multiple times too.
For now I hope Wonder brings me the same joy but overall I am really happy to have had the chance to play these games.

I always felt like an old crank (born in 1980, so VERY tail end of Gen X), but while I thought Mario 64 was a fun game, it didn't feel like a MARIO game to me. "Mario has a life meter and punches things? What is THIS?" It wasn't until Galaxy that I came around to 3D Mario more. It's funny because Zelda felt like a seamless transition, while Mario felt like a whole new thing entirely that happened to have Mario in it.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  11 місяців тому +1

Good points!! And yeah he punches? Why? There was a part I took out about the Wii and how the Wii U was better but I thought it would upset the snowflakes and it was too rambling but a lot of Wii games like galaxy had you looking like a conductor of an orchestra half the time rather than just pushing buttons like we were used to. Anyway here’s to our generation! 🍺 have a good weekend

Super Mario 3D World is a masterpiece of game design and the soundtrack is just sublime.
P.S. I still suffer from Champion's Road flashbacks...that just might be the hardest Mario Bros. level of all to 100%.
P.P.S. Super Mario World is still the king of all video games.

3D Land was easily one of my favourite 3DS games. Like a 3D 2D-Mario game. 3D World was also really good, but I think the game feels better on a 3DS that can actually do 3D.

At first I thought this was gonna be a video bashing Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64, but not really and loved that point at the end about continuing to play NES games even with a PlayStation...my only complaint about Nintendo 64 is it didn't get a proper Megaman or a Street Fighter game at all...but they were on Saturn and PlayStation

For a certain group of people. I was not one of them. Many of us went to PlayStation and loved it. You’ll find a few comments here that echo my feelings. It all depends on how you were and what you expected out of games! It’s funny because I had a friend who bought me ocarina of time for Christmas in 1998 and I did say thank you nicely but never played it. Just gave it to my brothers and they liked it. The only n64 game I really remember was crusin USA which I did enjoy a lot. But I was basically mister PlayStation from the beginning
