I’ve been playing Mario games since Donkey Kong was brand new (45 year old here). The one thing I’ve always been able to count on is the consistency of the quality and my enjoyment of them. As I get older and think I’m on the cusp of outgrowing Nintendo or games in general… the latest Mario game comes out and I end up enjoying it with the same awe and wonder and mental joy today as I did back in the mid 1980s. I’m finding that once again as I make my way through Wonder. it feels uncanny, there’s almost nothing else in life that I still enjoy the same way as I did when I was 6 years old, I don’t enjoy the same music, tv shows, or other childish things from when I was 6, but Mario… that’s a different story. I still feel the same giddy excitement, joy, and wonder with each new Mario game as I did as a young child. I never grow out of it!

I was on the cusp of sticking into the retro games, and maybe giving up on games altogether because I don’t like the direction that both Microsoft and Sonia are taking PlayStation and Xbox with the live service rubbish, and then I got my Nintendo switch and it made me fall back in love with gaming again Nintendo have a back of that to me for all the years probably since the N64 for me the Mario games I’ve kept free coming back to Nintendo years. I’ve realised I’ve had more Nintendo systems done any other systems, even if it’s mostly the handheld systems and four of their home systems in the NES, SNES, N64, Nintendo Wii I’m currently the Nintendo switch.

When you mentioned the fans that felt betrayed when the 3d mario games came out, I could sympathize.
Like, don't get me wrong, I like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. But, when I look at the 2D games, I always feel like, compared to them, they are games from different franchises. This is why I always hated when people said Mario had a good transition to 3D, I would always be like: "No, nothing from the 2D games made the cut, except for an italian plumber jumping around".
So you can guess my excitement when 3D Land is announced. Now we have a true transition to 3D.

When you mentioned about the gap between 2D Mario and 3D Mario games I remembered a flash game called "Super Mario 63" which is the total opposite of Super Mario 3D Land, a 2D collectaton with a mix of Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy, something that Nintendo would never do because it can cause confusion around players.

I was a "first played Nintendo games on the Atari 2600" Gen-X kid who never left. Loved my N64. Never owned a PS1. To this day I love both 2D and 3D Mario.
And Mario 64 was even at the time considered to be a colossal achievement in 3-d gaming. And since it was the first 3D Mario game, those people praising the game weren't the kids who grew up with 3D Mario.
    I think you're over-simplifying and over-exaggerating with the claims in Act 1.

I got 3D Land back in the 8th grade. I was sick at home with Strep and had a high fever. My Mom comes home and says she got my medicine. It was a copy of Super Mario 3D Land and a copy of the strategy guide. I fully beat the first 8 world's that night, and as I thought it was over, I found an extra 8 world's and a final hard level that pushed me to my limits of 3D Land's friendly but ever changing knowledge barrier.
3D Land will always be special to me. It got me through a time where I was incredibly sick and struggling with school. Easily a 10 out of 10 game in every regard

Super Mario 3D Land was one of the first ever platforming Mario game that I'd ever played, and ever since then I've been hooked on both new and older titles. I can hardly believe that 3D World is 10 years old already! I'm surprised that you made a video on something so recently, yet at the same time it can be considered old? I'm in my early-20s. I grew up playing a Gameboy Advance as early as I could remember. Early on, my brain was wired for the short, tight, arcade-y experiences offered by 16 and 32-bit games. Sure, I had a Wii (and loved it dearly), but most 3D exploration-style games simply didn't hold my attention the same way Mario Advance or New Super Mario had.
When the Wii U launched and 3D World dropped soon after, I was over the moon! It was the exact type of gameplay I loved, with the gorgeous visuals of a home console game. The Wii U, despite most of my peers then and now bemoaning it as emblematic of everything wrong with Nintendo, held my attention like few consoles had or have since.
This video had me grinning from ear-to-ear, it's great to know I'm not totally alone in my feelings.

Your closing hit me pretty hard. I too had the DS and later a 3DS, to Wii and then Wii U to now a Switch. When I do boot up my 3DS and play some old games like Mario and Luigi, or even farther back and play some Super Stars Super Saga, there is a wave of emotion and memories that comeback. Given I stayed playing my systems up until life events stopped me, and like you I packed up my Wii U because I got a Switch, but hearing about the history of some of these old games still bring back the memories. Seeing a screen it pulls my back like "oh, I remember I was doing this time at this event when I finished this level..." etc.

This is one of the best retrospectives I've seen on UA-cam in a long time. Thank you very much for the quality work you always put out. To me, Mario never got better than Super Mario Bros. 3. I liked Super Mario World and the New Super Mario games, but none of them surpassed the perfection that was SMB3. I didn't like Super Mario 64 when it was launched, and I never gave Sunshine a fair chance at the time. But then Super Mario Galaxy came and blew my mind, and it motivated me to go back to Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, and now I really like both of those games a lot. And then 3D Land and 3D World came out and hooked me immediately. Both are amazing games, and they feel a lot different from other Mario games. I also loved Odyssey and Wonder. Super Mario Bros. 3 will, however, always be the peak of the Mario gaming universe and probably the best platform game ever made.

I didn't quite know that until watching this. Super Mario 3D World was my dream Mario game since childhood for a variety of reasons. The way they translated the 3D to be more like the 2D games (which I actually think makes exploration more interesting and rewarding), being able to use multiple characters and with multiplayer. Both these games hold special meaning to me. The 3DS is the system that brought me back to video games after almost a decade away...and 3D Land brings back some fond memories of that journey into, at the time, Nintendo's latest offerings. I never played the GBA or NDS, so Super Mario 64 was my last 'Mario' experience.
3D World made me realize how much of an affinity I had for Nintendo, after seeing their games in high definition for the first time. The colour, graphics and overall experience of playing SMB U and 3D World solidified that I knew I would always be a 'Nintendo fan boy' and I'm more than okay with that.

another great video by GTV Japan, i love your retrospectives, i actually am 28 years old and was raised on the N64 and Gamecube, but i also had a Famiclone! which was a pirate machine that could use famicon style cartridges to play those 300 games in 1 with mostly NES and exclusive Famicom games and thats where i played the original Super Mario Bros and i loved how hard it was, it was weird when my sisters who actually owned an NES told me it was an old game! Then i had a Wii and it came with the virtual console and thats how i played classics like Castlevania and Mega man which somehow werent on my Famiclone but i fell in love with that era and game design.

Never fell out of the series loved 64 when I got it for Christmas. There's something special about the curated obstacle courses that I think the Galaxy and these games capture so well. However I think if Nintendo were to remake or re-release a Mario game that hasnt been done yet Galaxy 2 is going to take precedent over 3D Land.

I'm going to out myself as being on the younger side but I can't resist because the 3D land game holds some meaning. Back in 2012 one day, in my hometown, I saw a new strip of stores being constructed in a wal-mart plaza. I'll never forget, I saw one of the retail spaces on the end was a hibachi Japanese restaurant, but a mini one called "miyabi Jr." I went inside even though it was still under construction and these Japanese people were there. Surprisingly, they were really nice and liked how I was dressed because I was wearing a tucked in Polo which must have made a good impression. One of them was an owner and the other had practically just gotten off the plane from Japan, brought there to manage the new location. They sat me down and gave me the job with the opening crew. First job I ever had and with the first paycheck, I went next door to the gamestop and bought a red 3DS and new mario bros. 2. I was so torn between that one and 3d Land. I beat it easily and bought 3D Land next. The experience of that is more fun to look back on the game itself. It was a novelty that I enjoyed, nothing more. I associate the game with the first experience of earning something. I was a child in the gamecube days and played N64 as well as Gameboy and NES in an aunt's basement during summer visits. Am a modern Nintendo fan or older?? Maybe somewhere in the middle.. What am I??

Sure, Mario 64 and Sunshine weren't complete 1-to-1 translations of the original games (In fact, they really are a complete reinvention of Mario), but Gen Y was not un-familiar with 2D Mario.

I loved the Wii U, and Super Mario 3D World was such a wonderful game. I don't usually bother doing everything in games, generally just content finishing them once and maybe replaying them again later if I really enjoyed them, but something about 3D World made me complete it 100%, even getting all the stickers. For year I've felt Mario game design has split between "complete the level" style of older 2D games and "find stuff" of the more non-linear 3D games, with Galaxy being more of a hybrid, and 3D Land and 3D World imagining what Mario games would be if the 2D games got a proper sequel, but in 3D. I enjoy pretty much all of the games, but I definitely like the "beat the level" structure more, and didn't quite vibe with SM64 or Sunshine. Odyssey was amazing, tho. Super Mario Wonder this year was an absolute delight, and the indirect shared co-operation of the online play with strangers was a wonderful addition.

I loved the 3DS. I remember as a kid I had to undergo vision therapy to make my eyes work together properly. As a result, as an adult, I never had the complaints others had about stereoscopic 3D movies, and when the 3DS came along with its 3D screen I was surprised to hear people say they immediately turned that 3D slider to off and never touched it again. I could play 3DS games with the 3D on all day if I had the time (not anymore due to neuropathy in my hands) without any of those headaches people complain of (and I am quite prone to headaches and migraines). Ah, how I miss new stereoscopic gaming experiences, but I'm glad I had that therapy as a kid, even if it was a pain at the time.
I also never stopped playing those 8 and 16-bit games even as the industry moved forward. New N64 games were expensive, but I could go to a yard sale and get NES and SNES games for cheap at the time, and later similarly discovered emulation. I find myself somewhere between the the modern and classic Mario camps probably because I was raised with exposure to the NES, SNES and N64 in a pretty close time frame. Nowadays, I gravitate more towards the 2D-style games; I find them easier understand and feel that there's more room for clever ideas and action in a linear space. I could definitely get behind the idea of Super Mario 3D World being the best Mario game.
Another fascinating or mysterious little secret in Mario 3D World that I haven't seen many people mention, is that not only can you use the Wii U Gamepad to freeze enemies in their tracks, but you can also rub or scratch a lot of enemies and friendly characters (like Plessie or Sprixies) and they'll drop coins! The friendly characters even make happy noises and have animations when you "pet" them. It's kind of a weird feature that the developers put in, but it does kind of add to the cat theme in the game. (I'm also not sure if this is in the Switch version. I only had the Wii U release to test it with.)
I'm not sure if you're interested or allow links in your comments, but I made a silly video about this "petting feature" on my other UA-cam channel about a year ago documenting what I found.

Us "younger gamers" enjoyed NSMB. We also had Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on GBC and the Super Mario Advance series to catch us up on all of the prior Super Mario games.
Animal Crossing included NES emulation and with Action Replay and GBA (whose best-selling game was Super Mario Bros. from the NES Classics line) made sure us kids born 10 years after the NES' North American release could easily get access to "trial and error" games.

Bruh, this narrative of the N64 controller being "confusing" is such BS. I was seven years old with absolutely no home console experience when I first got an N64 with Super Mario 64 and even I could work that shit out pretty much instantly lol. Pretty sure the "one horn for 2D, one for 3D games" approach was even explained in the console's manual.

Great video! I’m really impressed with the amount of effort that has gone into this.
I’m not sure I completely agree with your take of Super Mario 64’s history. Stating millions turned their back on Mario after a confusing move to a 3D environment doesn’t seem too reflective of how it was. At least in my hazy memory.
On the contrary, in my memory at least, SM64 seemed to finally show a lot of developers how to make a 3D platformer along with new hardware providing an analog stick on the controller to make it feel like a real next gen platformer.
As a longtime Nintendo fan, I wasn’t so much “befuddled” as completely blown away by this next Mario instalment.
I’m not sure I agree with platformers like Klenoa (800,000 copies sold world wide), Jumping Flash (Over 1,000,000 copies sold world wide) and Nights into Dreams (around 1.1million copies sold world wide) leading the way and cutting their own path. To me, all of these games seemed to be stuck in that awkward phase between 2D and 3D, not really knowing what to do next. Sony was cranking out mascots left right and centre, and Sonic team were at the start of their struggles with how to force sonic into a 3D environment.
Mario 64 sold over 11 million copies worldwide. That’s more than all the games you mentioned combined.
Mario 64 might be slightly clunky to look back on now, but trust me, in 1996 there was absolutely nothing like it. Except maybe the Croc legend of the gobbos prototype made by Argonaut (Starfox), but Nintendo don’t like to talk about that.

So for me, m you had the ps1 Saturn already out and wondering what’s the holdup on the 64. Then you see it and don’t fully get it and just go with what you like. I had no idea about those facts and figures. Just what’s going on in my own world 😺

@@GTV-Japan Totally appreciate your perspective. Now you mention it I also remember the delay with Nintendo releasing the N64 and opting to go for the PlayStation and Saturn because they were taking so long to release anything. PlayStation really taught Nintendo not to rest on their laurels in that generation.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  Рік тому

@danrocks1981 another thing I often hear is about how the $299 e3 thing was insta death for the Saturn and insta win for the ps1 but I remember it very differently. First nobody knew about that until months later when it could be printed in game magazines, so nobody could just run out and get a Saturn, nobody knew! So if you just happened to walk into certain stores you might have got one but they were all gone immediately anyway the the price was to 299 in September and 199 after Xmas. I’ve always felt that Square announcing FF7 on the ps1 was the turning point because that made up a lot of minds and many developers soon went to Sony and it just snowballed from there. I also remember a lot of people leary of Sony because there was a fear that the PS1 would be all FMV stuff and they’d be so rich and powerful you’d never escape it. Anyway what really was the focus of conversations my friend and I had in the fall of 1996 were mostly about how Metallica was invading alternative radio and how Weezer was getting screwed because Pinkerton was brilliant but nobody really seemed to like it.

40 year old here and my first console was the Sega Master System at 4 or 5 years old. So for me I didn't get an NES until Christmas of 1990 at 7 years old but I got to play all 3 versions of Mario at the same time especially Mario 3 since it had just come out. Now I did get to play Mario 64 at 13 years old when they had it on display at Best Buy a few months before the system even came out. That and Pilotwings 64 was what drove me into buying the N64 but I'll be honest in that when I rented the game I was so disappointed that for the first time I decided not to buy a Mario game for the first time ever. That carried over into the Gamecube era when I saw Mario Sunshine and by pictures alone I refused to even try it let alone by it. For a while I felt bitter and betrayed by Nintendo releasing classic mario games on their handhelds but not on their mainline systems. After the gamecube died I passed on the Wii for several years until New SMB came out where finally after damn there 2 decades we got a proper mainline console version of a mario game and that motivated me to buying the Wii, the Wii U for New SMB U. I didn't begin to start liking the 3D mario games until Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World. Figured I'd share my own anecdote as a Mario fan. 😎

Really we kind of follow the same path. There have been some comments saying I am literally insane for not praising Mario 64 as the greatest game of all time, but I knew there were others out there who weren’t taken by it. I looked at Sunshine and thought “Mario? Is he still around?” The ps1 and 2 were so white hot there was no other reason to buy anything else. But I remember in 2006 a friend told me about new super Mario and my jaw dropped I had to have a DS and it was so fun! So just know you’re not alone out there my man!

Not entirely sure how you got the impression that millennial didn't like/couldn't handle NSMB.
Alot of us who had N64's as our first console would end up getting Gameboys & GBA's later, and had access to the Super Mario Advance series (or Super Mario Deluxe for the GBC)
So most of us not only understood classic Mario but also enjoyed them, and in turn enjoyed New Super Mario.
I think your sentiment would more apply to later millennials born in the early 2000's who may have missed the Gameboy line and would have DS's as thier first console.
I'm also surprised you didn't mention how divisive these games where initially, especially 3D world, from my generation because it looked like it had replaced the full 3D style like 64 & Sunshine.
Nowadays in a post Odyssey world these games are far more appreciated, but that discourse was a big deal around those games & I find it curious that youbframed it as a middle ground that everyone enjoyed.
