If this video leaves you with any questions or if you're a map host and feel like I didn't mention something, please feel free to comment them here! I'll try to answer best as I can. Also, I'm deleting any comments that derail from the video as usual (I'm *this* close to just banning the word "minor-attracted" from all my comment sections)
Hey! You’re one of my favourite content creators, and also the one who got me into rain world! I would really love if you’d play the Ori games, they’re great and would fit very well with rain world and hollow knight
@@pitchblackk4192 Google drive or a google form? Google forms are easy to make; just go to forms.google (search google forms on google to find it) and create a new form! Once your form is done, you clock "share" (i think) and there you'll get a link that you can copy and paste to a video description. Google drive, not sure honestly I've never used one for maps yet. I don't imagine it's too complicated
As someone who has joined many, many maps over the course of 4 years I also have some advice that wasn't mentioned: If you didnt get a part and you reaaaaally wanted to join this map, sometimes hosts make community posts/Twitter posts that people may reapply for either parts or backup for a MAP of theirs, in cases like that you may reapply but keep in mind its always good to have animation examples, maybe even updated to show improvement! If the host is asking for updates and you straight up do not have anything to show, even a verbal update is often a huge step in the right direction. Unless its a hard deadline such as a halloween map or a christmas map, hosts tend to be gentle if you have circumstances that are slowing down your progress on the part! This was said in the video but gosh DO. NOT. GHOST. it's so stressful for all parties Do not give threats or guilt trip other participants just because you didn't get a part. I've had this happen on my end, and I straight up had no idea how to react when I've had comments talking about how sad they are about not getting the part that I had gotten. Fantastic video btw, really well made North!!
I have no idea why anyone would ghost the host of a map since it helps no one and its easier just to say you can't finish the part so the host can pick someone else instead of having to wait only to be met with silence.
i love watching people doing their maps and parts, its always so inspiring and cool. mv only problem is when the host doesnt credit the artist...or when the tumbnail isnt credited also. there is a well known map that in the description says "TBA" for the credit to the people who participated in the tumbnail contest...and the map is 8 months old, no update what so ever... thats just so vile man
It’s actually also because sometimes the MAP hosts can’t remember the usernames and/or lost them, or maybe the original participant is no longer using its original account or deleted theirs, or the participant just (for some reason) doesn’t want too much attention and it’s just working to, well, do it. After all it depends.
@@DaSilverIngot well then add everyone they do remember (also they should've kept the list somewhere anyway) or the ones they can. Don't just write TBA so NO ONE gets credited
The worst part about joining maps is when you join a very passionate map project and suddenly the host just straight up leaves or ghosts the participants, like at least give us an update 😭- this has happened WAY too many times for me, don’t make a map if you don’t plan on finishing it or don’t have the editing skill *TO* finish it!!
Another don't: Do NOT get too upset if the MAP gets cancelled. MAPs can be stressful to host sometimes and real life does get in the way sometimes. Not related but since you gave us permission, my friend is hosting an OC MAP, we need one more participent. Channel name is LeafGem. EDIT: Leaf's MAP is complete! :D
On the script thing, another reason you’d want to read it is that even if you’re just applying for backup, if it has something that makes you uncomfortable, and then unknowingly join, you’d be participating in something you wouldn’t like, then it’d be an awkward conversation about leaving your backup role with the host. For example, I saw a map and just joined as a backup because I thought the host was nice, and didn’t bother to read the script. When I eventually did, I realized that I didn’t feel comfortable with it at all and felt a bit scared to tell the host I would drop the backup role I had, so I just quietly left the server
I was thinking about this the other day and remembered how aggressive I was when hosting MAPS some years ago,,, I'd add stuff in the rules like "if you comment for a part and I can tell you didn't read the rules I will ban you from my future maps" and "If you edit your comment to add the right codeword I will BAN YOU!!" I don't think I considered at the time that someone could've misunderstood the codeword considering i put like 5 of them (I would add so many cause I wanted to see which people would read everything or only read up until the 1st codeword. I never considered the fact that all the codes could've just confused them.) Guys,,, if you host a MAP,,, Please don't do this 😭 I probably scared away so many possible participants. People make mistakes, you don't have to ban them from everything
6:27 though id also like to add that its nice when people ask for "any part" that they also say which parts they have a preference for 😭 i find it super frustrating when i have multiple people asking for "any part" when theres, say, 10 parts open and i have no direction on who to assign to which part
You're the second person to have commented on this; this is why I mentioned that different hosts might have different preferences :D I'm actually really surprised by this one, because with my method of assigning parts, the people asking for "any part" are the easiest to assign. And I can't consider the part preferences of those asking for any part, either, so that's two differences!
@@Northflowo I think thats probably because you have lots of people asking for each part and assign them all at once, while smaller map hosts often just assign parts as theyre asked for in my experience
@@Northflowo I def understand why it'd be easier to assign parts if you already have people asking for specific ones as well as people asking for any part!!! It just gets annoying when EVERYONE who's applying just asks for any part because then you have no idea which part people would enjoy animating more than another
Number 8 has happned to me It was traumatizing, it was a Aniversary MAP, a person got a part in the MAP, but later she ended mocking someone elses problem, i removed her from my MAP, she came after me and said that "Your map is gonna be terrible bc i am not in it anymore" "You should be FRIYED alive" LIKE WTH???? the MAP ended never being completed anyways, thanks to everybody that did their parts, it made me happy
I've been considering joining a map for a bit now, but I've always been nervous because of how new I am to animating. This has given me a place to work up from, thanks, North!
Oh my goodness this is so helpful. The first video(s?) we’re incredibly helpful in telling the community about how maps work and and I’m just glad that we’re getting a refresh on this. I’ve hosted a couple of maps and a lot of the things here are my pet peeves so thank you for making this. Oh and since we can advertise here I have two maps open. There’s a Christmas one I’m planning on re-uploading soon, the theme of it is dramatic Christmas and using the same forest background, and it’s name is Carol Of bells. And the second map is A big shot scourge AU map that I rehosted a couple months ago.
Great video, and very much needed!!You hit everything perfectly! I hope you don’t mind if I add some of my own tips based on some of the maps I’ve hosted: - if you ask for any part, it might be helpful to at least include a few you would prefer. If a map gets a lot of applications , there’s a good chance that every part has at least one person asking for it for their first choice, so your “any part” might get lost in the process of choosing (at least in the way I chose parts) - if a map is being organized in a discord server, know that the atmosphere of that server might not be the same as a normal server. Like, it isn’t the most appropriate place to vent or discuss serious topics (unless there’s a specific channel for it) because it might make other participants who joined just for the map uncomfortable. I’ve quietly dropped from a map before because the server was stressing me out. - on the note of discord servers: if you find the link to the server, don’t join it unless you’re a part of the map or the host says they’re ok with spectators - don’t pressure or bother the map host for when the map will be done (mostly for if you’re not even in the map) Also, I’m looking forward to your hosting dos and donts vid! I’ve seen wild stuff from potential hosts that really turned me off of a map I would’ve otherwise enjoyed in the past.
YES ON THE OTHER POINTS but with my process of assigning parts, i am actually not able to consider part preferences for those who apply for any part :D
I’ve been in MAPs for around 2 years now and I’ve even fallen victim to applying to too many MAPs at once 😅 I think it stemmed from the fact that I used to join a lot of PMV/tweening MAPs that I could finish in a week? I’m better now at not taking more than I can chew haha!
also something i noticed when doing a part for a MAP i joined, keep in contact/ watch the WIPs of the people who have parts before and after you! I was doing a part and sent in the WIP and realised that i had gotten the orientation of the cats wrong, Character A was meant to be on the left side of the scene and i had them on the right side. It was an easy fix then because it was all just sketches, but it would have been much more difficult to change it all if i had coloured everything. MAPs are collaborative and ensuring you're keeping up with the prev and next animators is really important. If the person who's doing the part before you hasn't uploaded a WIP yet, then you can always message them to figure out how to go about starting your own part!
I hate seeing people go "I want to join but I suck" or something like that- I'm not a host or anything, but whenever I see that kinda stuff I just feel frustrated. Like- you're not gonna ever improve your art if you aren't willing to try. Great video :]
I usually host MAPs for beginners, but occasionally I’ll specify a more advanced one and I get a lot of people trying to guilt trip into it. I usually host more than one at a time so I’ll just link them to the beginners MAP
i mean, they're probably just worried their skills aren't up to the standard of the map host and the other artists involved, i've definitely felt that before
I wanna add onto the discord part by stating that I strongly recommend to anyone who wants to host a map for the first time have an alternative way to help someone join the discord if the link doesn’t work for them and to absolutely never have a link that expires. The biggest reason I dropped animation as something I wanted to do was because of an experience like this with a beginner map I joined on impulse. The host and I were literally stuck communicating in the UA-cam comment section and I already didn’t know how to edit some things in so I ended up dropping because I was convinced I could never get it done since I didn’t know anyone who could’ve helped me out on the editing. A discord server can give your participations a way to not just communicate effectively but potentially find others who might be able to help them out with anything they might have a difficult time doing like editing because editing is absolutely important in animation but not everyone has the same experience with editing so finding someone who does can be a big help.
I managed to make 4 maps and they came out pretty good. Although they didn't succeed..but now I'm planning to make a big one for over one hour, I'm really passionate about it. I hope this one will succeed
A person just quietly leaving and not telling me has happened to me with every map Ive hosted at least once- its the bane of my map hosting existence and Ive only hosted 2- Please please tell the map host if youre dropping out- theyre not going to get mad at you or anything- they will be glad you told them Also since advertising is allowed here's my go- I have an open map, its an oc map with the song Everything Matters by Aurora! we're so close to done, just a few parts were dropped, so if anyone wants to join itd be epic :0
14:09, a little tip, as someone who kind of knows how to moderate discord servers: You could use Dyno bot and set it so that you can see whenever someone joins, leaves, deletes or edits a message, etc. I hope you're able to see this for future use, since it's easier for a busy MAP host to keep track of things this way! (Side note: I like how you formatted the video with clarification, and all, I'm not going to be joining a MAP anytime soon but thank you.)
The weirdest but coolest thing that has happened to me when asking for map parts, is that I was SPECIFICALLY chosen for a part because I only asked for a single part and said that I didn’t want to be a backup. It was because I seemed passionate about only wanting that part. That’s obviously almost never the case, but I found it really cool that I was accepted because I was determined on that part or nothing at all. :)
thank you so much for making these types of videos omg 🙏 i'm incredibly tempted to start linking this video in the rules for my maps lol since we're allowed to advertise, i currently have three anything maps with backup spots open if anyone's interested :)
Despite how helpful the first two videos were, it's nice seeing one that's updated to hopefully inform more people who are interested in joining more maps and helping hosts finish really creative and underappreciated ideas. I keep having participants dropping immediately or ghosting me and it's both tiring and annoying though I don't judge them because everyone has personal lives and lots of things to do. Since I guess we can advertise I have a Warrior Cats AU Halloween map that's open called 'Lullaby of Woe' everything lore wise is in the pinned comment (though it's not very beginner friendly you have a higher chance of getting in since I'm tired and desperate). I have a beginner friendly map called 'Cake' it's a anything Wings of Fire color palette map and I'd love to get things active and the project finished.
Thank you for making this video!! I just got it recommended and thought I should leave a comment because this single video impacted my life so much. I highly doubt that you will see this comment and maybe I only comment to remember myself about this moment. Last year I watched this video at 3 am in the morning or so and suddenly decided I wanted to join a map. Honestly I never knew how it worked or that it worked that way. It wasn't only helpful with the do's and don'ts but also made me realise that I could animate in MAPs myself. At this time I was already drawing since years especially warrior cats and happend to begin to animate. It was like a wake up call for me. Since then I feel closer than ever to the community and met a lot of great people. Thank you for making this expierience possible :3
as a beginner artist and animator i thank you greatly for this! recently i joined a map and took three parts, made sure to post wips (i dont hav them anymore sadly) and kept in contact with the host. just applied for another! your advice is great, thanks!
Since this video is advertiser-accepted, I have two open MAPs on my channel, both beginner friendly! One is a color palette MAP to the song Hardbass Night, which can have just a PMV, and the other is a sketch MAP, which needs to have some movement in most of the parts. EDIT: The second MAP was The Perfect Girl, and it's closed already! Sorry abt that y'all
As a MAP host myself, I'd just like to say something that I like to personally do when people don't end up getting into the map. I tend to feel bad for people that don't get a part or don't get to be a backup, so there are 2 simple things I like to do: •let everybody join the thumbnail contest (i hardly ever make the thumbnails myself) •let everyone make vines or fan-art for your map These two things can allow people to participate in your MAP even if they never got a part, and chances are it might make someone happy. In my opinion, MAPs aren't quite as fun if there isn't a thumbnail contest or fanart or anything like that. I don't know why, it just doesn't feel as good. I'm excited for the supposed remake of the "do's and dont's of hosting MAPs" video, too! Something I'd like to say/add(?) is that i personally think you should always *properly credit your participants.* What I like to do is, when the parts have just recently been chosen, copy and paste the parts list into my Notes app. Every time someone finishes a part, i get their UA-cam channel link and put it next to their username. If someone drops, i delete their username, and i write someone else's username there if the part gets picked up by, say, a backup. Once all the parts are finished, I write the description that I want for the video (still in the notes app) and then i double-check and make sure the information is correct. Then i copy and paste what I write into the UA-cam video description, upload the MAP, then boom! It's also always a good idea to put their usernames in the corner of their part or to put a rewind of their part in the credits with their username (pretty common one), so that people can find the person who made their favorite part easily. This is just my opinion on crediting though, and it's also how I usually do it. I just wanted to share. I'm not saying that how everyone else does it is wrong or anything lol
My biggest roadblocks for joining a map are the fact that the google search is complete trash, and also my huge social anxiety :3 (talking to ppl is SCARY :D)
If you don’t have many examples I recommend doing some beginner friendly, unpopular MAPs. Yes, they might not turn out as well, but it’s good practice, and usually they’re first come first serve
I tried to find an unpopular map and the only one I could find had the description “you won’t be credited I just want to see your animations” like what 😭
This was so helpful! I remember the old videos about the dos and donts and so its really great that you remade them :D as someone who has joined countless MAPs and even currently hosting some this advice is great for both improving how I can join and helping to show how I can better improve how I pick parts for my MAPs!
Welp, ive got 3 MAPs that i have open right now: Viva la vida: a warriors anything MAP wich is almost done! Kyouran hey kids: another warriors anything map but more fast paced. Lots of parts open. Bristlefrost's memory: a storyboarded map of the last broken code book (MAJOR SPOILERS) All of them can be found on my channel.
In case anyone is swinging back to this video to check for open MAPs they can join: I have an AU MAP where Cloudpaw is never rescued, so "Lostface" is never renamed or allowed to retrain and rejoin the warriors den. She responds in the most dramatic way possible at every opportunity, and ends up ruler of all four clans as well as Bloodclan :3 Very beginner friendly!
Omg dude if the MAP is still open can i join? The only problem id that i have alot of unfinished animation results. Im pretty much almost finished with one of my walk cycles.
As a map hoster I myself made some mistakes while hosting, thanks northflowo, you even help the ones who host le maps. As a half-beginner myself (i’ve been animating for 1,5 years but couldn’t improve too much) i allowed some random kid who was a fan of a sports player, he had no animations and i looked at his channel and i was like “Did dude read the rules-“ lets hope he can animate. Btw feel free to join my map, it’s currently open.
I never hosted nor joined a map, however I've been watching maps, not just from warriors but from ocs or other fandom themed maps like bendy or fnaf and I even watched your original video when it came out that I know the basics of maps. Here's one tip that I would like to add, if you join a map and there's a discord, as much as it's important to communicate and interact with the host, it's also important to communicate and interact with the participates as well. Not only will the host see that you're active in the discord, but it can also help map parts flow better by understanding what the other participates are doing for their parts, participates there can also help you because usually in the warrior maps, people who join often has had experience with animating map parts before, Btw, I'm not suggesting to go to other participates if you're REALLY struggling on a map part or you're not understanding something in the script or rules, I would suggest going directly going to the host/co hosts about it. Asking your participates to help on something should be like asking them to collab or easy tricks to get your animation done sooner. Again, I'm saying this just to make clear, always ask your map host/co hosts if it's ok to talk to participates about other topics or asking them for help. I'm sure there's plenty of participates who had fun conversations in maps discord chats, but keep in mind there might be some maps discord chatrooms that are ONLY for showing wips/completed parts and more focused on work, basically read the map/discord rules and if you would like do something that wasn't mention in the rules, or confused, ask your map hosts or the people in charge of the discord. On collabs, collaborting with other participates can help get a part done faster if you're busy or there's a deadline, but please ask your host/cohosts if it's ok to collab and how many people can collab on a map part, before you start doing it. It can also help you form connections through people, gain more experience working with people, just overall better working and communication skills with people. However keep in mind, do not drag yourself down with your art/compare your parts with others by saying "oh my art is bad" "your part is so much better than mine" ect. Artists I know it's hard to have your confidence in your work, but one of the ways I gained confidence from my art is when I stopped putting myself down just to lift others up. At best it is annoying, at worst you're making other artists uncomfortable and not want to talk to you. Do not bring up personal issues/sensitive issues in the group chat, if you need to vent, check to see if there is a vent chat, if not, then please try to go other sources to vent. If the host/person in charge of the discord is allowing you to talk/vent about sensitive topics in the chat, please put a trigger warning for others. If a personal issue is not allowing you to finish your part, then it might be best to privately dm the host and explain your issue right away, so that the hosts and others don't have to wait on you. Don't expect friendships from other participates just because you worked on a map together, while friendships can be formed through maps, people join maps because they want to be part of a project, not because of friendship. If the other participates does happened to become one of your friends, great! If not, then that's ok too. Just because they don't become your friends, doesn't mean they hate you. Don't collaborate or talk the other participates or host just to use them to gain followers/subscribers. You should talk or collaborate with other participates because you want to get to know them better, understand your part, just overall have fun. Don't focus too much on fun chatting, because maps often have deadlines, even if it doesn't, it's still important that you are working, finishing up your part, and showing progress when the host wants you too. One more thing, if one or more of the participates are not obeying the rules or one of participates gets outed as a problematic person during the progress of the map, report it PRIVATELY to the map host with evidence first, then ASK if it's ok to let the other participates aware of this behavior, but the map host will most likely be handling telling the participates of the reported behavior. I'm sure there's plenty more tips, but this comment is already long enough, and I think you understand the basics.
I have an open beginner friendly Jay's Wing MAP, which allows watermarks. There's one part open currently but more might open soon, and we're in desperate need of backups if anyone's interested!
Point 7 of the Don'ts has happened to me so many times, it's so stressful 😭 I've had to take up multiple parts in some of my own projects because of it, right before deadlines too.
I really like how you "returned" to make full-length videos. I don't have an issue with shitposts, most of them are actually funny, but full-length videos are just what I find myself enjoying more!
I’ve been watching north for maybe 3 years now? Or perhaps a bit longer? Northflower’s videos were what got me into warrior cats (and so were moonkitti’s) But I couldn’t help but notice the video quality/editing is much smoother and cleaner now! Your previous videos were really good, but you’ve improved a lot! I didn’t even realise you had a character on the side now But thank you for making really entertaining yet informative videos, you’re one of my favourite UA-camrs because of this. And I hope anyone reading this has a great day/night !
By the way, I was kind of curious what people think of fake MAP parts thing. This trend was honestly bothering me for a while, like, why people even do these, I don't get it.
I think it was a neat idea that got way out of hand. From what I saw early on a fake map part was just someone who had an idea animating a part but not posting the full map call because they didn’t have time or energy. Hence fake map. But then others started to use it as a way to either pay tribute or participate even when they were rejected. I think the paying tribute itself is interesting if they do something completely different to the actual part. But it gets really bad fast in my opinion because of the whole habit of the fandom in comparing the parts and loudly saying that the fake part should’ve been the real one
I agree witht he person above me, and I also wanna state my own opinion: As long as people don't openly compare the official one to the fake one and let that cloud their opinions, I'm fine with them. The way I understand them is that people just want to practise animating without having to strictly oblige to deadlines or rules. But if someone tries to pass it off as real, it gets pretty bad.
As someone who’s watched and been inspired by maps and animations since 2013-14, been doing art for longer but never having enough confidence to actually join one, this is so helpful!! Thank you ❤
12:04 This is definitely something I am guilty of, when I got the part for a multi famdom map I requested two themes lion king and warrior cats, I thought I was most likely to get warriors as I was more popular but I was given lion king. Luckily the map host gave me the benefit of the doubt but my gosh I was so close to having to start again
Thank you so much for this! This really helps with MAP guide lines, and I don't have much confidence at the moment but I might want to start trying to help with MAPs sooner or later :]
Not mine, but Tastefulbean is hosting Kaikai Kitan, an Anything Pallette MAP inspired by Shounen anime. It still has plenty of part open, so don't be shy and give it a look 👀✨
My main tipp is to not expect too much, most I joined ended up canceling, so I usually look in their channel if they have already some experience and already finished parts Or at least I tell myself that, in the end I just take whatever I find
There was this one time someone applied for a map i was co-hosting and made a part without getting in. The other hosts and i never considered putting the 'no fake map parts' in the rules but still it was really awkward to explain to that person why they cant just post their ' fake map part'. I feel like a general rule when it comes to making fake map parts is that unless the hosts explicitly state that they allow fake map parts, don't make fake parts. Even if the hosts don't state it in the rules.
Once I was in a warrior cats map. Pretty fun but it got cancelled because barely anyone finished, there weren’t enough backups, and lots of people left.
thanks so much north! these tips will defo help me, I've been joining a lot of maps but I'm still learning about them haha. alsoooo since we have permission (yay) I have a map right now called Panic Room, I need backups pretty bad rn since people are dropping, and soon I'll also post another call for the outro parts. if anybody's interested please pop a reply! ^^ it helps a whole lot for just one reply and it makes hosting easier.
8:33 the amount of times I have skimmed through the script then found an easy part that I could but realize I have NO CLUE what is actually going on is crazy. 😅😅😅 read the whole script guys
I got this in my recommended feed and was very concerned that's this was about the other MAPs. Glad I could learn about multi-animator projects instead. Great video!
this was really helpful, as ive been thinking about joining a map for the first time in the future but wasnt sure about the rules and stuff. thanks a lot for this North :)))
thank you so much for this!! also i can confirm literally any updates help. i hate being ghosted by participants it’s the absolute worst 😭 also, i once made a part for a map before i got the part (i never even got in) and when i think back on it i’m so embarrassed 😭🧍🏻please don’t do this
oof yeah i'm most guilty of rule number 7, the first map i ever signed up for was a map ginjaninjaowo made and i missed a deadline due to personal events in my life, and i panicked and decided, instead of simply asking for an extension i just straight up ghosted them 0_0 still embarrassed by that to this day!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING TO READ THE FULL SCRIPT! I recently made a part and i had no explanation for what emotion the character was feeling in the script portion, so I looked at the other portions before and after and, because I looked, I knew the emotion the character was feeling! READ THE SCRIPT FOLKS
This is so helpful! I’ll definitely keep this in mind when joining new maps! That being said, I do have a Warriors Christmas map that is open and needs participants, so feel free to join :]
Tbh I’m pro starting a part before you get it. If you don’t get it and it isn’t a storyboarded or scripted map you can use the animation elsewhere, and if it is you were able to practice animating based off of the host’s work and can compare your work to the final project to see what other artists did differently. I’m not a fan of posting it as a fake map part, but I don’t think there’s any harm in going ahead as long as you understand that your work might not be included :)
Great video! I do have an open MAP that needs a lot of participants. It's very beginner friebdly (with examples) so I can assure you you will most likely get a part! North made some very good points there, I'm wondering if the video of dos and donts of hosting a map will also be remade or not.
Oh cool, this reminds me a lot of being an artist for a Radio play. Very similar idea except it's still images and a much longer video (think an episode of TV or movie)
I found something I think might be useful somewhere! If you have two or three parts, but feel bored doing one, work on different one until you get bored of that one! I've done this with schoolwork before and it worked quite well. Also, PLEASE, do not burn yourself out! You're mental health is very important, so if you can't work on any map part without feeling like you're gonna cry, please take a break, and maybe get some snacks and water. Remember to not sacrifice your wellbeing for the sake of a project. Remember you're amazing!
I’m quite new to the whole MAP thing, only having joined two and now onto my third one right now- all of them from small UA-cam corners that are very beginner friendly. I’d say it’s pretty fun but also nerve-racking. Having an existential crisis wondering if your art is good enough and if you went too ambitious, worrying about the deadline and any rules you could’ve missed. I don’t know how people can do so many of these... as soon as I finish a part I wanna crawl in a hole and cross my fingers, pray to the God Almighty that I did good, and then never feel like drawing again 😂
This was a fun live! I got a funeral held along with like four others LMAO Okay video time though, this is once again well made! Though I'd like to mention about people talking so much about human North? It doesn't matter, I don't mean that rude, I mean if North chooses a cat sprite or a human sprite it's still North, I just find it odd people kinda act like it makes her a different person lol.
the most common cause of death for a map is people just ghosting the host with no warning, i'll have a map where every part is filled and there are dozens of backups, but half the participants and even the backups have disappeared with no warning.. I WON'T GET MAD PLEASE JUST TELL ME IF YOU CAN'T FINISH AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
This video is great advice for anyone looking to join any MAPs! As for me, hello! Do you like shipping? Do you like color pallets? Do you like evanescence? I’m currently hosting a beginner friendly MAP that has all of these and more! There’s currently a LOT of parts open at the moment, so there’s fresh pickings! The MAP call is currently one of the top videos on my channel, hope to see you there! 😊
These are really helpful! I remember I watched your do's and don'ts of hosting MAP video before starting my own and they were really helpful for my own map ^_^
I’m currently hosting my first MAP and one thing that I’ve noticed is that so many people DON’T READ THE RULES before applying, please, read the rules people
This was very useful ^^ Will send this to some of my friends 10:27 I currently have 1 beginner friendly map with the song "Hard knock life" It's about Hollyleaf and Ivypool and there's no script :> I also don't mind if you don't have any animation examples
Beginner friendly MAPS, are usually a first-come-first-serve deal, made for beginners so new artists with little experience can animate and animation examples are usually negotiable. I joined one and it was a fairly easy thing, if you watch one you can see they may have varying experience. Also, you can do AMV’s and PMV’s usually.
Once I found a MAP that I really wanted to join, but it was full so I joined the Discord servers as a backup animator. Keeping in touch with the server, I eventually got a part, and after I finished, I signed up as a backup animator again and got a second part!
Can you make a video about the process of making a map part? I'm interested in learning how to animate, and joining some maps after i've made my first couple of PMV's and animation memes. It seems like a lot of fun, but I'm afraid that the skill level and time required to participate is too high for me like personally I really struggle to put deadlines on my art, it gets done when I feel like it, and sometimes that's never, so idk if i'd be the right person for maps y'know?
Not sure why UA-cam added this to my recommended since I don’t practice art, but it was interesting. Would never do it myself personally; not good at drawing, terrified of deadlines, group work is stressful, and it sounds like it’s voluntary which primarily means resume or passion for art I’m assuming. Major props to all the people who spend all that time on these types of projects though
Even though this is about MAPs and not MEPs, I would say most of this applies to MEPs as well. Lots of MEP hosts will ask you to not whine about parts or the other stuff you mentioned, and most of it just seems like common sense and courtesy to me, but I think this is a good video for anyone joining a MAP or MEP to see. ^_^
Now I don't wanna enter maps, to much effort ): -I'm more worried about avoiding discord as a young artist or animator and I may struggle figuring out how to post or contact the host, but I'm glad you made this video-
If this video leaves you with any questions or if you're a map host and feel like I didn't mention something, please feel free to comment them here! I'll try to answer best as I can.
Also, I'm deleting any comments that derail from the video as usual (I'm *this* close to just banning the word "minor-attracted" from all my comment sections)
i have a question. whats your opinion on arson?? very important
Hey! You’re one of my favourite content creators, and also the one who got me into rain world! I would really love if you’d play the Ori games, they’re great and would fit very well with rain world and hollow knight
hai north :’D
Okay actual question now, how do I make a google drive to send to MAP participants? i guess this is more for how to make a map but idk
As someone who has joined many, many maps over the course of 4 years I also have some advice that wasn't mentioned:
If you didnt get a part and you reaaaaally wanted to join this map, sometimes hosts make community posts/Twitter posts that people may reapply for either parts or backup for a MAP of theirs, in cases like that you may reapply but keep in mind its always good to have animation examples, maybe even updated to show improvement!
NOT. GHOST. it's so stressful for all parties
Do not give threats or guilt trip other participants just because you didn't get a part. I've had this happen on my end, and I straight up had no idea how to react when I've had comments talking about how sad they are about not getting the part that I had gotten.
Fantastic video btw, really well made North!!
Missed opportunity for me that i didn't name the chapter "do not ghost the host"
Yeah it really sucks to be goasted
@@Northflowo Lol
I have no idea why anyone would ghost the host of a map since it helps no one and its easier just to say you can't finish the part so the host can pick someone else instead of having to wait only to be met with silence.
@@BugsyBugYT Some people might be scared to tell the host about it, but that’s just my grain of salt
i love watching people doing their maps and parts, its always so inspiring and cool. mv only problem is when the host doesnt credit the artist...or when the tumbnail isnt credited also. there is a well known map that in the description says "TBA" for the credit to the people who participated in the tumbnail contest...and the map is 8 months old, no update what so ever... thats just so vile man
Pfft this is something to mention in the "dos and donts of hosting maps" video
Fr tho, I made a map thumbnail and they didn't credit me! (It's on my vids)
Dont actually do your part when your supposed to do it, Do commit tax fraud and animate while your being confined
life hax: animate while in jail so you won't get distracted from the task
@@Northflowo omg so true

The worst part about joining maps is when you join a very passionate map project and suddenly the host just straight up leaves or ghosts the participants, like at least give us an update 😭- this has happened WAY too many times for me, don’t make a map if you don’t plan on finishing it or don’t have the editing skill *TO* finish it!!
edit- especially if people have already finished their parts :”)
Usually life gets in the way, but yeah at least let us know what’s up
@@MooseShower yeah i understand that but even just a “hey this map is not gonna be finished sorry” is enough, yknow?
Ohhh yeah, most of the MAPs I’ve joined have ended this way, it’s a shame really because I really liked the parts I submitted to these MAPs.
@@icedconfusion not to mention everyone else who also does great work and then the host just gives up on them
Another don't:
Do NOT get too upset if the MAP gets cancelled.
MAPs can be stressful to host sometimes and real life does get in the way sometimes.
Not related but since you gave us permission, my friend is hosting an OC MAP, we need one more participent. Channel name is LeafGem.
EDIT: Leaf's MAP is complete! :D
Right. I’ve participated in many that were canceled or forgotten about, and all I do is publish my part and move on
Can you link LeafGem's MAP announcement video? I can't seem to find it.
Thank you!

@@glitteryvieweraltray4369 Didnt u watch video and the part when she was saying no link comments?

@@mrcrackfish0 Yes but i forgot, sorry.
When I eventually did, I realized that I didn’t feel comfortable with it at all and felt a bit scared to tell the host I would drop the backup role I had, so I just quietly left the server
marcy pfp 🎉
I was thinking about this the other day and remembered how aggressive I was when hosting MAPS some years ago,,, I'd add stuff in the rules like "if you comment for a part and I can tell you didn't read the rules I will ban you from my future maps" and "If you edit your comment to add the right codeword I will BAN YOU!!" I don't think I considered at the time that someone could've misunderstood the codeword considering i put like 5 of them (I would add so many cause I wanted to see which people would read everything or only read up until the 1st codeword. I never considered the fact that all the codes could've just confused them.)
Guys,,, if you host a MAP,,, Please don't do this 😭 I probably scared away so many possible participants. People make mistakes, you don't have to ban them from everything
My do’s and don’ts of being in a map:

6:27 though id also like to add that its nice when people ask for "any part" that they also say which parts they have a preference for 😭 i find it super frustrating when i have multiple people asking for "any part" when theres, say, 10 parts open and i have no direction on who to assign to which part
You're the second person to have commented on this; this is why I mentioned that different hosts might have different preferences :D
I'm actually really surprised by this one, because with my method of assigning parts, the people asking for "any part" are the easiest to assign.
It just gets annoying when EVERYONE who's applying just asks for any part because then you have no idea which part people would enjoy animating more than another
Haha yeah I always say which ones I prefer
@@cryptidrose.I think if i start hosting maps, the way i’ll handle people asking for any part is thqt i’ll give then any open part :P

Number 8 has happned to me
It was traumatizing, it was a Aniversary MAP, a person got a part in the MAP, but later she ended mocking someone elses problem, i removed her from my MAP, she came after me and said that "Your map is gonna be terrible bc i am not in it anymore" "You should be FRIYED alive"
LIKE WTH???? the MAP ended never being completed anyways, thanks to everybody that did their parts, it made me happy
I've been considering joining a map for a bit now, but I've always been nervous because of how new I am to animating. This has given me a place to work up from, thanks, North!

I wish you luck!!!❤❤❤ if you need practice, there are beginner friendly MAPs out there. You got this!
I hope you don’t mind if I add some of my own tips based on some of the maps I’ve hosted:
- if you ask for any part, it might be helpful to at least include a few you would prefer. If a map gets a lot of applications , there’s a good chance that every part has at least one person asking for it for their first choice, so your “any part” might get lost in the process of choosing (at least in the way I chose parts)
- if a map is being organized in a discord server, know that the atmosphere of that server might not be the same as a normal server. Like, it isn’t the most appropriate place to vent or discuss serious topics (unless there’s a specific channel for it) because it might make other participants who joined just for the map uncomfortable. I’ve quietly dropped from a map before because the server was stressing me out.
- on the note of discord servers: if you find the link to the server, don’t join it unless you’re a part of the map or the host says they’re ok with spectators
- don’t pressure or bother the map host for when the map will be done (mostly for if you’re not even in the map)
Also, I’m looking forward to your hosting dos and donts vid! I’ve seen wild stuff from potential hosts that really turned me off of a map I would’ve otherwise enjoyed in the past.
YES ON THE OTHER POINTS but with my process of assigning parts, i am actually not able to consider part preferences for those who apply for any part :D
I’ve been in MAPs for around 2 years now and I’ve even fallen victim to applying to too many MAPs at once 😅
I think it stemmed from the fact that I used to join a lot of PMV/tweening MAPs that I could finish in a week?
I’m better now at not taking more than I can chew haha!
I look at your channel you're are really great at animating!
Fellow MEP gal here, your statement brought me back to those dark times. i dont know how i managed through that whole time without collapsing.
also something i noticed when doing a part for a MAP i joined, keep in contact/ watch the WIPs of the people who have parts before and after you!
I usually host more than one at a time so I’ll just link them to the beginners MAP
i mean, they're probably just worried their skills aren't up to the standard of the map host and the other artists involved, i've definitely felt that before
@@jasperjazzie this is why i don’t apply for maps
I REMEMBER WATCHING THE OLDER VERSION- thank you for making an updated one!!
The old one was the first video of hers I watched, I’m hyped for 2.0 😮
I managed to make 4 maps and they came out pretty good. Although they didn't succeed..but now I'm planning to make a big one for over one hour, I'm really passionate about it. I hope this one will succeed
👀
A person just quietly leaving and not telling me has happened to me with every map Ive hosted at least once- its the bane of my map hosting existence and Ive only hosted 2-
Please please tell the map host if youre dropping out- theyre not going to get mad at you or anything- they will be glad you told them
Also since advertising is allowed here's my go- I have an open map, its an oc map with the song Everything Matters by Aurora! we're so close to done, just a few parts were dropped, so if anyone wants to join itd be epic :0
14:09, a little tip, as someone who kind of knows how to moderate discord servers:
You could use Dyno bot and set it so that you can see whenever someone joins, leaves, deletes or edits a message, etc.
thank you so much for making these types of videos omg 🙏 i'm incredibly tempted to start linking this video in the rules for my maps lol
since we're allowed to advertise, i currently have three anything maps with backup spots open if anyone's interested :)
Thanks to twitter, I flinched when I saw the titlw because I thought you're talking about another MAP
Which one?
as a beginner artist and animator i thank you greatly for this! recently i joined a map and took three parts, made sure to post wips (i dont hav them anymore sadly) and kept in contact with the host. just applied for another! your advice is great, thanks!
Sorry abt that y'all
YES QUEEN IVE REWATCHED YOUR OLD VIDEO SERIES OF THIS A MILLION TIMES
As a MAP host myself, I'd just like to say something that I like to personally do when people don't end up getting into the map.
I tend to feel bad for people that don't get a part or don't get to be a backup, so there are 2 simple things I like to do:
•let everybody join the thumbnail contest (i hardly ever make the thumbnails myself)
•let everyone make vines or fan-art for your map
These two things can allow people to participate in your MAP even if they never got a part, and chances are it might make someone happy.
In my opinion, MAPs aren't quite as fun if there isn't a thumbnail contest or fanart or anything like that. I don't know why, it just doesn't feel as good.
I'm excited for the supposed remake of the "do's and dont's of hosting MAPs" video, too! Something I'd like to say/add(?) is that i personally think you should always *properly credit your participants.*
What I like to do is, when the parts have just recently been chosen, copy and paste the parts list into my Notes app.
Fr

As both a map host and (more often) map participant, I appreciate this!
I have a bunch of open maps which almost all are beginner friendly!
I'm always looking for new artists to join my MAPs
Love the definition at the begging in was very curious but confused when i first clicked the video lol
Yeah me too
I have an open beginner friendly Jay's Wing MAP, which allows watermarks.
Northflower’s videos were what got me into warrior cats (and so were moonkitti’s)
But I couldn’t help but notice the video quality/editing is much smoother and cleaner now! Your previous videos were really good, but you’ve improved a lot! I didn’t even realise you had a character on the side now
But thank you for making really entertaining yet informative videos, you’re one of my favourite UA-camrs because of this.
I agree witht he person above me, and I also wanna state my own opinion:
As long as people don't openly compare the official one to the fake one and let that cloud their opinions, I'm fine with them.
The way I understand them is that people just want to practise animating without having to strictly oblige to deadlines or rules. But if someone tries to pass it off as real, it gets pretty bad.
I love your talking videos not even warriors or anything I just like listening to you talking about something
My main tipp is to not expect too much, most I joined ended up canceling, so I usually look in their channel if they have already some experience and already finished parts
Or at least I tell myself that, in the end I just take whatever I find
There was this one time someone applied for a map i was co-hosting and made a part without getting in. The other hosts and i never considered putting the 'no fake map parts' in the rules but still it was really awkward to explain to that person why they cant just post their ' fake map part'. I feel like a general rule when it comes to making fake map parts is that unless the hosts explicitly state that they allow fake map parts, don't make fake parts. Even if the hosts don't state it in the rules.
never done these or plan on joining but still felt the need to watch this
Once I was in a warrior cats map. Pretty fun but it got cancelled because barely anyone finished, there weren’t enough backups, and lots of people left.
I have another dont: if you didn't get the part you wanted and the part is still open dont keep asking for it that'll just get you kicked
I'm currently working on a form for ppl can use to pick a part of a MAP I'm doing rn, this helped quite a lot and I appreciate you making this video!!
Thank you! I'm planning on joining a beginner map and I'm pretty anxious since I've never applied to map 😅
thanks so much north! these tips will defo help me, I've been joining a lot of maps but I'm still learning about them haha.
alsoooo since we have permission (yay) I have a map right now called Panic Room, I need backups pretty bad rn since people are dropping, and soon I'll also post another call for the outro parts. if anybody's interested please pop a reply!
Great video!
ngl was a bit concerned seeing a video talking about joining MAPs before hearing the acrynims meaning lol
this was really helpful, as ive been thinking about joining a map for the first time in the future but wasnt sure about the rules and stuff. thanks a lot for this North :)))
thank you so much for this!! also i can confirm literally any updates help. i hate being ghosted by participants it’s the absolute worst 😭
also, i once made a part for a map before i got the part (i never even got in) and when i think back on it i’m so embarrassed 😭🧍🏻please don’t do this
oof yeah i'm most guilty of rule number 7, the first map i ever signed up for was a map ginjaninjaowo made and i missed a deadline due to personal events in my life, and i panicked and decided, instead of simply asking for an extension i just straight up ghosted them 0_0
still embarrassed by that to this day!
Thanks this was helpful. I have done MAP parts a while ago but also not on youtube so it's good to an update
I made a map call awhile ago without having much knowledge on exactly how to host but luckily after watching the vid I somehow got everything correct
I stumbled across the this is Halloween MAP and I'm obsessed with it, making me inspired
Thx for the tips! I’ve been feeling like joining a bfdi multi-animator project, especially since i have so much extra time due to summer break!
Where is the MAP call?
I've joined a whole lotta maps and this really helps me out!
That's actually a really good strategy omg
I got a funeral held along with like four others LMAO
Okay video time though, this is once again well made!
I’m currently hosting my first MAP and one thing that I’ve noticed is that so many people DON’T READ THE RULES before applying, please, read the rules people
This was very useful ^^
Will send this to some of my friends
10:27 I currently have 1 beginner friendly map with the song "Hard knock life" It's about Hollyleaf and Ivypool and there's no script :>
I also don't mind if you don't have any animation examples
Beginner friendly MAPS, are usually a first-come-first-serve deal, made for beginners so new artists with little experience can animate and animation examples are usually negotiable. I joined one and it was a fairly easy thing, if you watch one you can see they may have varying experience. Also, you can do AMV’s and PMV’s usually.
Gonna be hosting my first MAP in the near future and this is still very helpful!
i would like to join if you will host it :)
Love videos like this!
Once I found a MAP that I really wanted to join, but it was full so I joined the Discord servers as a backup animator. Keeping in touch with the server, I eventually got a part, and after I finished, I signed up as a backup animator again and got a second part!
Hello! I'm hosting a MAP! (one of my amazing participants left a kind comment advertising it
I"m excited for the new hosting maps one :00
Can you make a video about the process of making a map part? I'm interested in learning how to animate, and joining some maps after i've made my first couple of PMV's and animation memes. It seems like a lot of fun, but I'm afraid that the skill level and time required to participate is too high for me
like personally I really struggle to put deadlines on my art, it gets done when I feel like it, and sometimes that's never, so idk if i'd be the right person for maps y'know?
This is very helpful! I was thinking of joining a map, and this helps greatly! Thank you for making this video! 😊
I haven’t been in a map before, but in a few years when i have more experience in animating i might.
i literally thought this was about nonces and i was so confused-
Now I don't wanna enter maps, to much effort ): -I'm more worried about avoiding discord as a young artist or animator and I may struggle figuring out how to post or contact the host, but I'm glad you made this video-
