🎬 In this video essay FilmSpeak talks Fantastic Beasts 3 and why it's The Movie that Saved the Harry Potter Franchise (kinda) after Crimes of Grindelwald.

The Harry Potter franchise has been through a rough patch, it's still GOING through a rough patch. Not only has JK Rowling gone on bigoted tirades online, but the Wizarding World franchise reached the lowest of low points following the release of Fantastic Beasts 2 The Crimes of Grindelwald; a bloated, convoluted, horribly written sequel that all but KILLED the Fantastic Beasts franchise and all remaining interest in more movies in the Harry Potter universe and much of that rested on the shoulders of JK Rowling herself having written both the fine Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Crimes of Grindelwald. With Fantastic Beasts 3 The Secrets of Dumbledore, a major change was needed in order to SAVE Harry Potter. Enter Steve Kloves, the man who wrote 7 of the 8 Harry Potter films, the man who has a great understanding of the Wizarding World on the big screen and why the harry potter films were as beloved as they are returned to rework Rowling's script and do his best to salvage a sinking ship, miraculously pulling it off. Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore may not have fixed all the problems that plague the Harry Potter prequels, much of that DNA is unfortunately just baked into the fabric of the story thanks to JK Rowling, but it is a major course correction that will hopefully lead to the saving of the Harry Potter Franchise or the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The world, characters, and story felt MAGICAL again, something Harry Potter fans have only gotten glimpses of over the previous two films. So...yeah, Fantastic Beasts 3 is Actually a GOOD Movie! Let's just hope it's not too little too late. Griffin (@griffschiller) is joined by a special guest to give you their Secrets of Dumbledore review or Fantastic Beasts 3 review and discuss how fantastic beasts 3 saved the harry potter franchise, why fantastic beasts 3 works, and the man who saved the harry potter franchise.

I think the main issue of this franchise ever since the first one is how it’s trying to infuse the dumbledore and Grindelwald stuff of the first wizarding war into a movie whose title and premise that the audience was sold on was about a quirky guy searching for some cute creatures. These things are the exact opposite in terms of tone and they just end up clashing. It almost feels like the only reason Newt and his storyline exists in the third film is because they are too afraid to simply throw him away and change the title of the series, three entries in. The dumbledore Grindelwald stuff should have been it’s own series and same for the Newt stuff. They would be infinitely better without the other.

exactly. i would’ve loved to see a globe-trotting franchise (i know it is right now but it doesn’t feel as fun as it should) with newt just finding these creatures and maybe even having to race to them - akin to indiana jones. in situations like that we could bring in grindelwald’s followers but never him himself because that’s just too big scale for a character like newt. you’re right and i think it’s the reason why newt’s character has very barely progressed in the films.

Mads and Jude's god tier chemistry in Fantastic Beasts 3 is what saved the franchise. People are free to say whatever they want, but imo Dumbledore and Grindelwald's romance is the only romance in the entire Wizarding World cinematic universe that has a degree of depth and complexity.

It is for sure the most original and interesting romance in the wizarding world, full of emotions. I don´t understand why people complain about Dumbledore having significant role in the storyline ... and more space. The series is called Fantastic beasts, but that doesn´t mean that whole film will be only about animals. In fact, when I see various reviews on the internet, it seem like reviews write almost everyone nowadays and a lot of them isn´t very reasonable.

I prefer Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald and think he should have been in the role from the start, but to be fair to Johnny Depp, Grindelwald in general is just a much better written character in this movie than he was in the last two. He's actually allowed to show some emotion and be vulnerable, especially in the moments with Dumbledore. Johnny didn't have the opportunity to share scenes with Jude, and so his performance didn't feel as layered.

I agree with what you said about the love pact. Love could have been (and actually was) the main reason Dumbledore didn't want to face Grindelwald, but there's still another crucial reason, which is the main explanation de books gave: Dumbledore was terrified of the truth:
‘I think, than I feared him. Oh, not death,’ said Dumbledore, in answer to Harry’s questioning look. ‘Not what he could do to me magically. I knew that we were evenly matched, perhaps that I was a shade more skilful. It was the truth I feared. You see, I never knew which of us, in that last, horrific fight, had actually cast the curse that killed my sister. You may call me cowardly: you would be right. Harry, I dreaded beyond all things the knowledge that it had been I who brought about her death, not merely through my arrogance and stupidity, but that I actually struck the blow that snuffed out her life.
‘I think he knew it, I think he knew what frightened me. I delayed meeting him until, finally, it would have been too shameful to resist any longer.’

@@all-caps3927 I don't have the books with me right now, but in HP7 it's clearly stated that in the summer after Kendra died, Albus and Grindelwald became friends and made grand plans and shortly before Aberforth (who had a special bond with his sister, who cared for her and was able to calm her down) had to go back to Hogwarts, he confronted Albus and Grindelwald that their plans didn't include caring for Adriana and that they couldn't take her with them to fulfill their grand plans. Grindelwald became angry, a fight ensued, in which Aberforth alledgedly (after Rita Skeeter) broke Albus's nose and they duelled, the three of them, Ariana was trying to help, but in the end, Ariana was dead on the floor. Grindelwald ran away because he already had a record after being kicked out of Durmstrang and Albus felt remorse, burying his plans.

I've watched and read a few reviews now and I'm surprised no one mentions how Jude Law has these moments where he sounds exactly like Michael Gambon's Dumbledore. He has these quiet kind of muffled sounding lines where he isn't in the shot (I think there are a few in the Hog's Head scenes) and it could easily have been old Dumbledore speaking and I wouldn't have been the wiser. While on the topic of love, loss and redemption, It would have been so great to add a story about Newt and Theseus discussing about Leta. Theseus wants to stop Grindelwald the guy who killed his fiance but still feels like he doesn't have a real emotional crux to the story. I mean come on, just from a story point of view it makes him a better supporting character yet we don't feel that even after adding that subtext our-self. There is no real conversation between Newt and Theseus about Leta and what she meant to each one of them. They could have had a good moment of brotherly bond where they have a fight about something related to Leta and Newt has to go save Theseus when he gets captured (something that happened in the movie) and they reconcile past difference and start to talk with each other better. This would also add so much more to both their characters especially Newt as he begins to learn to open up to others. I know its cliche but some stuff can work if integrated with other new elements like the Manticores.

The naming of the series is unfortunate, because it means they have to force fantastic beasts in there somewhere, despite the real quality of the series coming from Jude Law's Dumbledore. And now you have Mads Mikkelsen, who is well known for playing these incredibly nuanced and intense characters. So you have two world class actors with an incredible amount of chemistry on a screen together. I think the movie still tries to hint that the main reason for Dumbledore's inaction is due to his lingering love. Because after the blood pact broke and the two starts fighting, they still found themselves to be unable to deal the finishing blow. So even without the blood pact, their inaction towards each other (or at least hesitance) would still be present.

Secrets is my favorite of the FB movies. It just felt like more fun (especially when Jacob interacted with the Slytherin boys), and I liked more interaction between Newt and Theseus. @@ChienaAvtzon In my opinion the main issue here is we're being impatient with a story that is still halfway through. The franchise would work a lot better as a series on Netflix or something, it just needs more screentime to develop organically. I think JK Rowling is still finding that sweet spot between screenplay and novel and hopefully she'll find it by the next film. Rowling's stories are always thoroughly planned, I know there's a lot more we'll get explained moving forward and so I have big hopes for this story still and will have no verdict until it's completely told.
Also, I feel there's a lot of subtext that is going unnoticed, some of it by myself. That mirroring thing you guys explained... noice.

@@thepolloelectrico1117 - While, I agree the WWII arc is better suited as an adult HBOMAX miniseries. That does not change the fact, JK Rowling did not properly outline and edit the “Fantastic Beasts” story. I just rewatched “Secrets of Dumbledore”, and it is clear Steve Kloves altered the basic timeline. The order of events the happened in the previous two films have been switched. The stuff between Newt/Leta/Theseus in Paris happened before Newt went to NYC. Meaning, Leta Lestrange died several years before Newt met Tina, and Queenie joined Grindelwald in NYC. JK Rowling destroyed her own franchise by being lazy and trying to force characters into storylines they did not belong. This has nothing to do with fans and moviegoers being impatient, and everything to do with poor writing and plotting.
JK Rowling and WB screwed up by letting her be the screenwriter, and fast tracking the franchise before the story was fully mapped out. Remember, novels are only as good as their editors. Even a minute detail such as which Scamander brother is older, should have been allowed to be altered to better fit the actors. As their dynamic is funnier if Newt is the older brother, or he and Theseus are twins. Evoking the Holocaust is in very poor taste, and a Jewish character would never join Wizard Nazis. Credence should have remained dead, and not been revealed as a Dumbledore, because it gave Grindelwald the ideal rallying call. Then there were all the pointless ancillary characters who added nothing but dead weight. JK Rowling will be lucky if WB gives her another chance. David Zaslav, the new CEO, is brutal and not interested in garbage. The only reason I can see him allowing “Fantastic Beasts” to continue, is to keep certain actors on contract.
Also, do not get me started on the casting misfires that were Ezra Miller and Johnny Depp. Talk about a dumpster fire.

Plot holes of the top of my head:
    *- Credence as a Dumbledore.*
So, previous movie, Grindelwald tells Credence that he's Dumbledore's brother, right? But now it turns out he's apparently his nephew? So why tell him he's Dumbledore's brother? If you were going to lie about his heritage, wouldn't you say something more like "He's your father" to make the whole abandonment idea more prominent. But of course, we, the viewers, know that Dumbledore never had a son, and wasn't that the whole point? Not tricking Credence, but tricking us...
    *- The Chilin*
So, magic deer is used for magic elections. Alright, that's fine, but why are they not guarded in any way, sense or form?! What happens when the all die out? What's to stop someone tampering with it, like a voting ballot box?
    *- Magic Security*
Do they just not check wands now? Even after an attempted "assassination", they still have zero defenses in place at the election place. Anybody could have whipped out there wand and taken out any of the candidates. Also, was there no barrier or anything to cancel out enchantments? If Gringotts can have a magic waterfall that washes away enchantments, then surely the event to decide the ruler of all wizard kind could have at least something a little similar...
*- Grindelwald contradicting himself on live television*
The first time was when he straight up says that the wand Jacob has, the one he "tried to assassinate him with" is coreless, basically making it a regular stick. "Oh no, the magicless muggle's going to murder me with a useless stick!". And then there's his flagrant use of the Cruciatus Curse on Jacob. We know that the curse doesn't work if you don't truly want to see the person suffer. Now stay with me here, but I thought the Chilin bowing to you meant that you were good and pure of heart, which doesn't sound like someone willing to torture an unarmed man with one of the darkest known spells to exist...
I'm sure I can come up with more later if need be. Thank you for your time.

I think the biggest crime Fantastic Beasts commits revolves around how much they were trying to set up rather than tell an actual story. Crimes of Grindelwald didn’t really have a “plot”; it was just one scene going after another that is rather seen out of context. Aside from Grindelwald’s speech in that movie along with the opening scene and ending scene, I felt nothing from watching CoG. Now that movie has great special effects and good voice acting, like it was a great movie from a technical and visual perspective, but the “plot” was pale at best. But Secrets of Dumbledore does sound like a movie that seems to be on the right track of things. It does sound like a movie that has what Crimes of Grindelwald was missing above all else. I might see this movie after hearing about how much it improves and tries to not repeat from the predecessor. An improved film is much better than a movie that manages to be worse than the first.

Everything about this film feels like it's on autopilot. It's scatterbrained, boring, it's second act is a waste of space, and there's a lack of canonical cohesion in the lore. And the fact that Dumbledore is somehow more pure than Jacob is one of the dumbest decisions in the franchise.

A suggestion from me for the Fantastic Beasts future: We don't need two more "waiting" Beasts movies, so get the final confrontation between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in the next(4th) movie, as long as WB allows there to be more movies, and then make the 5th(and final) movie as a "binding story" like the Star Wars Rouge One movie, where we see Voldemorts rise to power that ends with the killing of James and Lilly, and Hagrid saving baby Harry, to tie up the "prequel" Fantastic movies with the main story in the HP movies. :) ;)

"Do what is right, no what is easy."
But among my community, we think they chose the easy way.
To me, this is not a resurrections film for wizarding world but destroying it, because we're having high expectation to this third film.
I think the first and second are good, not the best, but still acceptable. Because we got new characters, new kind of idea, creatures, even a muggle.
But coming to the third film, it's so disappointing. The whole movie is so rushing at all the plots, trying to fill what's left from the first, second, and also leaving a bunch of new questions.
Talking about the secret of Dumbledore, we still can't feel how struggle for Dumbledore about losing his sister, well at least a small flashback like Snape? Showing how sad when he saw Lili is dead, the expression, the feeling we can saw it on Snape's while hugging Lili's dead body.
The series used two movie to tell us about Credence, built his character well, but in this third film, he suddenly can connect with his original family without explaination to us. He suddenly convinced by Albus just a scene of interaction and just a sentence: "He is lying to you." That's all? Easy win for Albus. And suddenly, he is good with his father.
Qillin? Seriously? Why the people still need to vote when the Qillin's decision is the final decision. The movie just slapped our face really hard that voting is unnecessary when we're having a high and powerful being to chose which is the best.
And the Qillin bow to Albus is not going well too. Is he having a good heart? I think he's just good at playing strategy and mind game, it didn't mean he's having a good heart there.
Blood Oath is unbreakable? So it will break when they both having the different ideal? Then the oath should be broke when Albus has the thought of planning to stop Grindelwald. No to wait until one chose to save and one chose to kill.
Kama's double agent. Is Grindelwald so stupid? Kama just came from no where and he straight getting a higher position then the other. And Nagini? Where's she? Fully turned into a snake? No explaination at all.
Grindelwald's ability to see the future is not fully used. And what is a plan without a plan? Or many many plan to cover this and that? Or not letting everyone knows the plan? But not having a plan is still a plan. To me.
Conclusion for this film I didn't enjoy it at all. The visual effect are great. The story is a big no, can't see the main story line and mixed a lot of sub story line. Named the movie: The Secrets of Dumbledore but everything came out from no where. And we still can't fully know what's the secret. I though the movie is just about to start: at Bhudan. But it's almost end. About the fourth and fifth movie, that's where I will have low expectations to look forward to them. Not to pick a fight or something, just to share my thought and feelings about this movie. And thank you for reading such a long passage, but I still can't express it all by words and I'm not a English main, hope you can understand my words. :D

One thing that the Fantastic Beasts movies lacked from the original series is that feeling of being part of a magical world. When we look at the very first Harry Potter movie, it took us into a whole new world, one that was full of wonder and mystery. The filmmakers along with Rowling herself did an excellent job with the world building and created a place in the films that was both fascinating and engrossing. Who among us weren't dazzled when we Harry and his friends entered Hogwarts for the first time? Now compare that to the very first Fantastic Beasts movie, it was set in New York City. Not a part of the city that was magically sequestered like Diagon Alley, with the only locations that even came close to showing us the magical communities of America were the MACUSA office building and the seedy bar that was only featured briefly. And those places were just as mundane as the rest of NYC. Personally I feel NYC is a beautiful setting that has the potential tell just about any story, but we've already seen the place in other movies and TV shows, and while its a beautiful city with a rich history, it is not an enchanting wonderland. This may explain why in the sequels, instead of staying in one place, they've been globe trotting, while also bringing us back to Hogwarts to make up for the fact that they have run out of creative ways to world build new places for us to explore.

I don't think Dumbledore wanted Harry to do all the things you say in the video. Yeah, he believed being challenged was important, but not at the extent of risking his and his friend's life blindly and stupidly.
He didn't want the trio to risk their life protecting the stone (it was 100% secure), he didn't want Harry to fight a XXXXX mosnter which he didn't even know about, He didn't want Harry to look for Sirius, because as far as he knew, he wanted to kill Harry. The movies did him dirty in the goblet of fire, but in the books the trials were presumably 99% secure and monitored. He didn't want to be kicked out of Hogwarts leaving Harry and the school unprotected and he didn't want to risk himself, the DA, and The Order by having to protect Harry at the ministry. Ok, that was partly because of his management of information, but come on, his position was impossible, he had direct the resistance with absolutely everything against him, and he maneged to stay afloat. It wasn't until he knew he was dying that he started seriously training Harry.

*UPDATED* What did YOU think of Secrets of Dumbledore?⚡️ Comment below. Thanks again to Status 🎧 Make sure to get a pair of your own here▶️ www.status.co/filmspeak
Many of you have rightfully called out my inclusion of Johnny Depp in the behind the scenes controversy in this video and I’d like to take a second and comment on that. Regrettably this video was in fact released before the trial started or possibly the day it started (it was written and recorded weeks prior) and had I heard the specific information that is now coming to light, I wouldn’t have included Johnny Depp in the video or accused him of doing “bad things.” Now granted, we haven’t heard the other side of it in this particular trial, I still think it could be a case where the issue is more complicated, was a case of two people who brought out the worst in each other that blew up into a horrifically toxic mess, but it’s pretty undeniable that Johnny Depp was horribly abused and I apologize for not being more careful and considerate with my words. I understand this situation has been going on far longer than just the current trial and while I considered myself up to date on the information, perhaps I should’ve took a closer look/decided not to throw a line in the script as the story’s still unfolding. The right thing to do is cut that section out of the video so as not to continue spreading misinformation (or oversimplified information). Thank you for holding me accountable and I hope you’ll forgive my mistake.

The lines where Dumbledore says he was “in love” with Grindlewald has been edited out of the film in countries with homophobic governments. So their past romantic relationship doesn’t exist in those versions. Thus the blood pact. No homo, I can’t fight you not because I’m still in love with you but because I made this ridiculous maguffin.

It should be noted that in HP, Dumbledore wouldn't have been able to beat Voldy... so he NEEDED to train Harry... and most of those situations with Harry happened to him REGARDLESS of Dumbledore...
The 2nd most powerful wizard and his army were targeting the boy...
Also, without the blood oath, Dumbledore could still attack Grindelwald... you can fight your lover after all...
And it's not love alone stopping it... because Dumbledore isn't a child and Grindelwald is kinda crossing way too many lines.
In fact, it's the messiness of love that made him make the stupid oath in the first place...
If Grindelwald only had the ideology and didn't murder people on it and nearly kill BILLIONS, then yes, Dumbledore might have stopped... but the dude crossed WAY too many lines...
Remember, Dumbledore loved Harry as his own grandson, yet was willing to let the boy go through hell and back for the sake of the world...

For reference, Sonic 2 had a $72 million open, The Batman opened with $120 mil and Spiderman made $260 million opening weekend. These Beasts are about to become extinct.

The way the blood oath is neutralised plays into love being the mental block for Dumbledore to act directly. It’s done in a moment of history repeating, Grindelwald choosing to kill in a situation that hits too close to home for Dumbledore. It’s a line Grindelwald can’t come back from, and he knew both had been caught in a magical mess of spells that cost the life of a Dumbledore Obscurial before so he knew it was personal. Add in that Credence is a halfblood, and Grindelwald is proposing a war based on racial purity (which is why he made a show of torturing Jacob), and he’s past the point of no return.

Have read comments about people not being invested in the characters. Part of the original series that Drew people in was that people got to read the stories first-- you understood the story arc-- even if there were surprises and twists. We didn't have that with FB 2 or 3 and all these new characters are very complex.

  • @glazzydonuts2651
    @glazzydonuts2651 2 роки тому +1

They shouldn't have named the series Fantastic Beasts, because frankly this whole story end game is going towards Dumbledore and Grindelwald final showdown, and I don't see how Newt will fit into that storyline. They've literally put a sword hanging above themselves with having Newt as the central piece when Dumbledore could've been a better attraction. Sure Newt is an entertaining character, but if Warner had wanted the big bucks, like they're supposed to, they should've had the entire movie made out of Dumbledore POV instead of Newt's. Maybe it's cause Rowling had made the push that it has to be from Newt's perspective.
But yeah this movie writing wise kinda somewhat saved the series, it definitely has more of a Harry Potter feel to it than the first two movies. Maybe because this time the movie isn't solely written by Rowling, which explains things. Like how this movie tossed out the characters that don't really move the story (like Nagini).
I do agree with the people who said that this movie was a bore, because it lacks action and it takes conversation to move the story, which a lot of people find tedious. Unless you are one of the people who are extremely invested into the story.

I didn’t think of the blood oath as being that big of an issue. Yes, Dumbledore’s love was enough to keep him from acting, but in the scene with him trying to destroy it and demonstrating that he would die if he were to break the oath shows a broken hearted man who has seen the love of his life going down a dark path. He understood that if the world was to have a chance of defeating Grindelwald, he is the only person who can outwit him. I also think it showed it’s importance for the next movie as to their blood oath being broken; Dumbledore casted a spell of protection while Grindelwald’s was one to kill. The love they shared was reciprocated, but has now turned sour due to the actions of Dumbledore.

  • @JayD001

I understand that you feel that Fantastic Beasts franchise has tried to mirror characters and story beats from Harry Potter, however that still doesn't detract from the fact that it's just lazy writing and filmmaking.
To try and gloss over the holes in the low quality of these films is just making excuses in my opinion. Many attempts to resonate with the audience fell flat. Also a HUGE plot hole that was made worse in FB 3 was that Credence was told by Grindelwald in FB 2 that Dumbledor was his brother yet in FB 3 is the son of Aberforth. The films forget their own foreshadowing and established lore.
As a huge potter fan I tried to love Fantastic Beasts, I throughly enjoyed the first which was fun and exciting at best but since then it's all been downhill. JK Rowling and WB have no idea what they are doing anymore and they are trampling on the legacy HP left.
Was Fantastic Beasts 3 better than 2? A little.
Does that give it a pass? No.

It was okay. I think saying that it saved the franchise is incorrect though. There's many inconsistencies in this movie, additionally to that, unsatisfactory conclusions to built up story arcs. As I had commented on another video, I was massively detached with the characters due to a lack of empathetic comparisons, I couldn't connect to a lot of them. I loved Jacob, but that's only because it feels like he's the only character that develops, and faces turmoil, everyone else remains somewhat static throughout the film. Mads did a superb job as Grindelwald, and Jude Law as Dumbledore, but they just make Nute feel underwhelmingly unimportant to the story. Because it's not HIS story.
