So let me get this straight. The road up an active volcano. Through a Lava field. The definition of inaccessible. Has a better looking surface than the roads I ride on in London? Splendid.
I mean if we're comparing roads, the road that's on an active volcano is smoother than the roads here in the Philippines, where you're forced to buy a gravel bike even if you're riding at tarmac.
Aloha and welcome to hawaii Francis! Couple of things. You all rode to the NOAA observatory at 11,135 ft (3,394 m). The summit is a slog of a hiking trail that takes you right to the caldera which is closed at the moment due to the increased activity that you mentioned. You CAN, however, cycle to the top of Mauna Kea (4,207 m) which is the opposing mountain to Mauna Loa. You have to swap to a gravel or mountain bike for a section that is unpaved though. Yes, Kilauea is currently erupting on the SE side of the island and is often actively doing so. No pyroclastic flows though...those are reserved for other "flavors" of volcanos. We have the more iconic oozy (pahoehoe) and clanky (aa) lava that you definately noticed during your time here. All of this to say that you all need to come back very soon to ride some more and see more sights.
Francis, nice ride. Riding Mauna Loa is a different ride. Surprised you folks didn't ride Mauna Kea. But you started from the Saddle? Your friend Tyler (Vegan Cyclist) and Jerimiah Bishop rode from Waipio Valley to the the top of Mauna Kea, on gravel! (Impossible Ride 2). So I believe you can appreciate their accomplishment. EPIC ride again. I was born and raised on the Big Island and at 68 years old can appreciate your effort. Thank you for showing respect for the land the "spirits" and the people of that beautiful island.
Yeah, why don't riders know how to maintain their bikes anymore? Not a good advertisement for Parcours Wheels when their bike sounds like that day after day. Would take me a couple of minutes after ride to swap out the bb, then I'd press new bearings into the old one.
would definitely be interested to hear more about how filming on a phone affects your workflow and quality of life while making these videos! crackin' good time, as always, Francis!
Living in very dense central Europe the emptiness of this road ... made me cry. ... and the sheer beauty of the landscape made it even worse. Awesome place.
Lovely video. Did you maybe mix up the mountains? :) Should have turned left from access road, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on earth from sea level. Mauna Loa road “only” tops at around 3500m and not above 4000m, Mauna Kea is a much tougher climb and the road goes to the top at 4205m. But they are both amazing roads to ride, did them both 4 years ago but started at sea level in Waikoloa - highly recommended.
That looked brilliant! Nice one, Francis. I drove up Heleakala on Maui and nearly broke the car but since I took up cycling I've hoped I could go back one day and do it on a bike. Maybe an Hawaiian Islands and volcanoes trip to save up for!
I've wanted to do the sea to sky climb for about a year now. I still don't think I'm capable of it at this point. Climbing to the summit at 14k is insane! Hope you come back for another ride soon. Great vids!
I thought that was where your air bnb was, at the top of a massive volcano. The footage you can get on just a phone, just need a grill mount for it. Surprised Dov's BB hasn't exploded yet.
The volcano ⛰️🌋"huluhulhulu" surely has to be part of a new Ironman 180km bike course for 2023? 🤔🤭😉. Brilliant Kona vlog for us triathlete suscribers, Thanks Francis 👏 & to Dov & Amy at Parcours👏. Next time your in the Toon Francis, you'll need to have your Hawaiian shirt on ! 😎
Why in Hawaii go to Maui and there is a nice climb beach sea level to 10,000ft in 33 miles! Up Haleakalā to Crater on a dormatt volcano. So beach, pineapple 🍍 fields and to mars on one ride. Going down is great banked corners as USA military built it for star wars projects 😁 and I think they still do a race to the top once a year! Cycle to the Sun? Makes UK hill climb look like a bump in the road !
GeologyHub provided a good update 3 days ago on current activity if you’re interested to know more about the volcano: ua-cam.com/video/Lwwbznsksks/v-deo.html Riding between lava fields 👍. How long / challenging was the ride?
Your pronunciation of the start location made me chuckle. That BB noise was also annoying me, even worse when listening through headphones. Well done on an epic climb
The trouble cycling up desolate volcanoes in hot countries is getting enough water and zero streams or sources- like El Teide on Tenerife .... (damn you I'll be back!!)
@@Cade_Media I guess the only downside to your traditional setup is ergonomics ? But I'm pretty sure we'll get to see how you do it once you will play with it a little more
Hey I saw the video where you steal your own bike and there’s a crazy lock you didn’t try. It’s called the skunk lock, it’s about $180 and there’s not a single video on the Internet of someone cutting through it. If you could pick one up and cut through it that would be amazing!
i genuinely had to stop watching this 2;27 in due to the bb clicking. it takes a real friend to ride up a mountain with someone who's bike clicks and creaks on every single turn of the cranks - if I was on that ride a certain argon 18 would have wound up in the lava fields ;)

And being London, you have some of the better roads in the country. Most of my commute looks like what's _next_ to the road at 0:55.
because it is barely used and lack of rain probably

on my bucket list to go sea level to top one day..

Also, I really like your videos. They inspire me to ride everyday and at 68 I feel great! Please continue and good luck in your efforts.
Click, click, click, click. I’d get off and walk if my BB makes that noise. I would stop, call an Uber, “take me to a bike shop STAT”

Mauna Loa started erupting now after 38 years! 🤙🏼

Amazing scenery only slightly tarnished by that clicking BB!
Living in very dense central Europe the emptiness of this road ... made me cry.
... and the sheer beauty of the landscape made it even worse.
Awesome place.
That landscape is insane! Can't imagine riding through it, or up it. Bonkers.
Landscape looked amazing biking up the volcano.

what a cool experience, amazing landscape. Great video
0:50 great shot of Mauna Kea behind you at 13,803 Freedom Units, or 4,207M
OMFG - the black road and rocks reminded me that the heat is insane.
Glad to know I am not the only one who is annoyed by other people's bike noises😂
That looked brilliant! Nice one, Francis. I drove up Heleakala on Maui and nearly broke the car but since I took up cycling I've hoped I could go back one day and do it on a bike. Maybe an Hawaiian Islands and volcanoes trip to save up for!
ha ..ox bow lakes....we did those in the early 80's too..
The transition from the top to starting to go down was epic
You mean the closed fence?
that bottom bracket has to be threaded. Put some lock tight thread tape on it.
Aloha from Maui, good job on the climb 🤙
That BB sounds exactly like mine last week when I changed my chainset forgot to put the spacers back! Each click inflicting minor damage. Nasty.
Ouch, at least you'll never forget again. Hope they get their one fixed before the next video, not even my bike but it's getting annoying.
100% want to subject myself to that climb just for the descent. Looked mega and brutal 🙌🏼
landscape reminds me of Iceland.
great video.

I think they only did 11k since that’s where the road stops but that’s still almost three times higher up than my local big climb
Familiar territory as I too live on a volcano, so lanzarote for the next one maybe? Nothing as high as that tho lol great vid 👍😎🚴
Well done on 201k! Also Subbed to Kyle Smith.
I rode up an active volcano a bunch of times on Zwift.
'5 English degrees' wait whatt🤣🤣🤣
I thought that was where your air bnb was, at the top of a massive volcano. The footage you can get on just a phone, just need a grill mount for it. Surprised Dov's BB hasn't exploded yet.
I liked the gate at the top literally just blocks only the road, and anyone who wants to trespass could just walk/drive around it.
Awesome footage, excellent video.

How do you use the pro standard grill mount with an iPhone. 😂
Such a sick video! I wanna do it too now!

The footage coming out the new iPhone is crazy good. Are you shooting Prores 4k 30?
nah just the standard profile 30fps!
Only me that thought Kyle was in fact Lawrence Carpenter 😂😂
My Argon Dark Matter makes the same noise!
Fix that bloody BB!
I didn't know they had Ginger Biscuits in Hawaii! 🤣
oh imagine doing one of the most unique ride of your life, and there's someone with a creaking bb
Unreal scenes
How long did it take you to ascend vs. descend that volcano? (Also, very nice to see a Keira crossover again.)

Riding between lava fields 👍. How long / challenging was the ride?
Track mitts...😉
#Splendid!
And I thought Kilimanjaro was ugly... Pretty anticlimactic that fence up there.
Your pronunciation of the start location made me chuckle. That BB noise was also annoying me, even worse when listening through headphones. Well done on an epic climb
Thanks Heidi!
That BB clicking is like fingernails down a chalkboard...
So you filmed all the footage on an iPhone? That crazy! Would you recommend just using an iPhone for someone new to vlogging?
Very cool. But Dov's bottom bracket! That BB86 is really making the case for a threaded BB.
Eh threaded can still be shit, way more to go wrong in manufacturing.
@@invisiblescout6335 Yes, of course. I was just being snarky. But I do personally prefer threaded. They have been far more reliable for me.
looks unreal
Thanks Francis
Do the taiwan KOM challenge this October 28 !
Simon Yates and Tao G are coming !
Did they run out of Parcours jerseys?
The trouble cycling up desolate volcanoes in hot countries is getting enough water and zero streams or sources- like El Teide on Tenerife .... (damn you I'll be back!!)
That’s why hydration backpacks exist :)
Aero is always important 😂
You should have done Mauna Kea, it's rated as the second hardest climb in the world.
next time, we had a party to go to
Second hardest? What’s harder than Mauna Kea? By all accounts I’ve heard it’s easily the hardest overall
To be honest, I thought the shots on the iPhone were insane. Just beautiful. And god it hurts as I'm basically the opposite of an Apple shill
likewise, finally bought this after years of resisting, I hate that I love it
@@Cade_Media I guess the only downside to your traditional setup is ergonomics ? But I'm pretty sure we'll get to see how you do it once you will play with it a little more
what sunglasses do you wear?
Sungod Airas 👍
Nice Nice brother!
I reckon my Hawaiian shirt collection Wii sort all of us out
very cool 👍

Try Vesuvio
Even though I watch her channel, I missed seeing Keira on these videos

Last 🌋
Im biased but I firmly believe you can get A+ footage from an iPhone 13 Pro and up.
Oh cool they made zwift real
So do that twice and a little more, you've got an Everesting... or would you have to do it 3 times...? hmmm...
Two and a bit from the sea!
That would be a lot of distance-almost 100 miles to Everest on that road
@@quarkonium3795 Many everests take that sort of distance...
Hellooo
How did this happen, an early comment.
