Episode 1 Review With Special TERRY MATALAS Picard Season 3 Showrunner Breakdown Included!

- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard boldly goes where the previous seasons did not by delivering the long-awaited reunion of most of The Next Generation cast. In Episode 1, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) receives a dire message from Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) which leads him to team up with Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) on a rescue mission that sends them to the edges of Federation space. The phenomenal episode ties up a few loose ends that were introduced at the start of the series-and a few that date back to Star Trek: Nemesis-all the while laying the groundwork for the series' titular character to face something he's never faced before.

That intro title scene, gave me goosebumps
*Picard 47 Alpha Tango:* _N47AT_ is a legit registered airplane in the FAA database. It is owned by a man named Putnam in Bigfork Montana in Flathead county. There are many people with that last name that have been involved in Star Trek over the years, including the USS Israel Putnam a non-canon ship and a publisher of the ST novels. The plane is manufactured by Potts and is also a name connected to the Star Trek franchise. Jake and Willie Potts were children aboard the Enterprise-D and Teri Potts was a producers for DS9. The Wag-a-bond airplane is a replica of a Piper Vagabond which Vagabond is an online retailer in NZ that sells *Star Trek: Ascendancy* an ST themed board-game using plastic figures.
If I'm not mistaken that intro song is from the Fallout series, the original one
Lol 17:20 was he drinking Scotch
did jean luc picard meet his bastard son? did jean luc knock up beverly?
Seven needs her own series as Captain.
I second this!!
I found my self soaking up every single scene, the weekly wait is going to eat me alive. Thank you so much for this channel.
Did you notice the digital Gene Roddenberry in the M'Talas scene? It's at the moment when Raffi bumps into some guy who says "watch it, i'm not your dealer!" The guy he was talking to is clearly Gene Roddenberry. It's weird to me that so many breakdowns of this episode completely missed this easter egg. Including a video called "everything you missed in Picard season 3 episode 1" I noticed it immediately. And so far, i've yet to see ANYONE else talking about it.
intresting, we'll go back and take a look!
It would’ve taken four episodes to get as far as they did in episode one of season three if this were season one or season two. I feel like they realized that at the last minute and crammed two or three planned episodes together.
This one finally brought me back... TNG and my time with the original in the late 70s. It was just good to have character dynamics that are fun/quirky. Can't be all serious, life ending and military structured. Very much enjoyed. And... I don't have to do the math to figure out where/when this fits in time with all the previous sagas...
Nice video and very informative. Definitely gets a thumbs up. I like how you say that Picard is more like he was in TNG, than in the previous two seasons. Also love the dynamic between Ryker and Picard and the early dynamic of Picard and Aires. Great Great first episode and great podcast.
11:24 As given away in a partially redacted LCARS display in the end credits, Shaw was at Wolf 359 aboard the USS Constance
I loved the format of this video with the interview part at the end. It’s great to get the insights from the showrunner himself. Great job!
Did you notice that the jacket that Beverly is wearing is similar to the jaket that Kirk wore in Star Trek 2 "The Wrath of Kahn"? With this and the reveal of Jean-Luc son I'm getting "Wrath of Khan" vives when Kirk learned that David was his son.
I get the feeling that will be the most interesting season so far.
I get it that they wanted to bring in new characters and a different storyline and backdrop in the first two than those we are used to from TNG. But theres enough new series out there to do that. With Picard it is nice to see the old crew members back to more than cameo.
Terry didn’t have a breakdown at the end. He was very well composed. :p
😂
Hope there are spin offs and the TNG crew make cameos! Like maybe 7 of 9 will get her own show! Or Geordie gets a show!
This was an outstanding episode.....leaves me wanting more for sure......the snub by the captain of the Titan I think is because of what happened in the past......perhaps Wolf 359.....it would explain the issue Shaw has with Seven.....we surely know Seven's career is not over....i give this episode a 10 out of 10.....my mouth is watering for the next episode.
I want to see a Shaw and Seven show. Excellent chemistry and utter polar opposites to make it interesting.
In Berman-era Star Trek, Starfleet didn't have trouble sourcing light bulbs. I wish they could figure out how to get more of them in this era.
24th century’s problems. 😂
In Deep Space Nine, the admiral said Romulan Ale is no longer banned.
The Section 31 episode with Dr Bashir and Sloan
You’ve said it best 👌 I’ll be watching E 2…. I’ve been a Trekkie since 1968 when I had watched the original series while recovering from my tonsils being g removed ..w ice cream!
I'm going to watch your video later when I have time. But I just wanted to say that I deeespise Picard s1-2, and don't even get me started on STD... But, this first episode (in combination with everything I've heard about the quality of the rest) actually makes me think this season could be good. The biggest thing I noticed was Seven of Nine, she actually felt like the Seven I know from Voyager. Not that, person, Jerry Ryan played in s1-2...
Possibly the most excited that I have been for live action NuTrek since Strange New Worlds. This promises to be the last best hope for the franchise, and it may well launch a new renaissance of sorts. For the record, I am rooting for the success of Terry Trek.
Im 59 and have been a trekkie since the 70’s and lost my sight in 1998 and when discovery and picard came out with audio description I regained I what I lost in 98 but in season 3 of picard its not audio described which as pissed me off greatly so how can I contact Paramount to make sure this does not happen again in thefuture, I have been busting with excitement for season 3 but it really feels like I have been stabbed in the back. There are lot of people who are either blind or vision impaired who feel the same so shame on Paramount for not having picard season 3 audio described thanks blind advocate 11:12
Really great comment here. If you @paramount on Twitter and also @us, we'll make sure that gets retweeted and we'll chime in as well. It's 2023, they need to get this one right.
@@ThePopcast I looked on the world health organisation in 2009 and it stated. there are over 330 million people world wide who are either blind or vision impaired with a moderate to severe impairment and one would think anyone with a business mind would jump at the chanc to access one third of a billion people to sell their product or service thanks blind advocate
I love to watch these after I see the episode. One issue with this episode. Beverly crusher as the doctor would rarely pick up a rifle and fire on someone. She is not a warrior. She is a healer. They made the same mistake with Dr. McCoy in the last Kelvin line Star Trek.
A great start to what looks to be a great season. I was OK with season 1, liked season 2 but LOVE season 3 so far. So excited and thrilled it's finally here, now if I can just keep my patience in check each week for the next episode!
Only issue is I wish they use more light especially on the inside The outside ships are looking better now with more light but the interiors could use a bit more visual acuity
One Note: After the destruction of the Romulan Homeworld and the breakup of the Empire, Romulan Ale became legal. Although... it's an acquired taste.
What’s up with the musical notes for Pop Goes the Weasel in the end credits. I know it’s what data is whistling when he first meets number 1 in the Encounter at Farpoint episode but does it have a special significance to something that’s going to happen or is it just a cool Easter egg?
hmmmmm
crossing my fingers here that this turn it seems happened on episode #1 goes on to the rest of the 3rd series episodes🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
17:20 Thats the future Enterprise from All good things !
I can’t wait for episode 2
It feels weird to not BASH picard this season thank god I like it
This is good syfi..
Still no Star Trek here!! 😂
Luv you guys, keep up the good work..
I love an excited about the final season
I thanked god old trek was still alive. Then quickly turned off the tv when I saw Discovery was next in cue.
Terry is saving Star Trek.
I know you’ve seen the rest of the season- and if you think episode 1 is the “least interesting” episode of the season- WOW. I loved it. So that just means it’s going to keep getting better. I can’t wait 👍🏻
Shaw obviously has a serious hate for anything/anyone Borg, almost reminds me of Sisko and Picard meeting for the first time.
Yes, tone was not doomsday like it has been lately. But the curse words seem unnecessary still!
Why all the references to DNA in the LCARS images from the closing credits??
It was a great first episode! I would give it 4 out 5 stars! Big thank you to everyone who works to create the Popcast UA-cam videos. I’ll be watching every second of the season
Only 4 stars???
Sorry, but why would we infer at 04:04 that "this is likely the end" of their relationship?
Watch the resignation on her face. It's evident in our opinion. But who knows maybe Picard shows up at the place she was talking about and they are together once again :)

I am most curious on the redlettermedia guys . Rich I guess didn't even watch the trailer and they haven't seen it all. . Cubs winning the world series I can cope with. But those guys positive about star trek. What kind of future am I walking in?
This first episode was AMAZING. I loved every minute of it and wanted more! Please TV gods - if there are any more seasons after this one - let Terry Matalas write and produce all of them. 👏
I’ve got a feeling that Tasha yar was already pregnant with Casteel’s child when she was captured by the Romulans and she had two children while in captivity. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to come back to haunt to Picard.
We need more T&A
Commenting this after EP 2. We're in good hands. I know I'll enjoy this journey.
I agree with you totally.... Cant wait for more! Thank you SO much!
While I'm super jealous about 2 million people got to see this show early, I'm super happy to be able to theorize for the next 2 months
Berman is the be all and end of.. with tweaks to adapt to the day..
I know Jeri Ryan was in it. Did something else happen?
Love your videos ❤amazing presentation like the 3rd season of Picard we need you LLAP 🖖🏼
This one episode is alot better than discovery lol
I would rather have had season 3 of Picard as season 1.
Didn't care for calling the Titan a "refit." It's the same with the new Stargazer. Those aren't refits. They're new ships. If it's a refit, would it not be an updated Luna Class? It's not a deal breaker. Just annoying.
Apparently (from the details revealed in cast/crew interviews) the construction on the new Titan-A started off with Starfleet building it as a standard Luna-Class starship (which apparently involves many unique science oriented, offensive & defensive details--included alongside an enhanced impulse engine infrastructure which differs from every other classes of starships), but somehow the decision was made halfway through to finish the build of the ship to be more physically reminiscent of an old Constitution class refit (they really haven't said why yet). Hence, the "neo" reference. So this new Titan carries the best elements of both classes but is also in a very distinct class of vessel all by itself. People can call it yet another "kitbash" starship if you want, but I love it. It addresses the elements that frankly BOTH starship classes seem to have overlooked and makes for a sound fusion of form & function.
1 Name, Terry Matalas, thank you for being a Fan as well as what your doing!
Enjoyed every minute wishing I could Binge the whole thing
The episode was AMAZING! THIS is THE TREK we've wanted for TWENTY YEARS! Kurtzman, you listening?
Bring back Vic Fontaine!
I think you said it in an earlier video, but this is the Star Trek we've been. Waiting for. I completely agree that this is likely the slowest episode of the season and I'm here for the final 9.
I loved it so much. Perfect ratio of nostalgia and a great new fresh story
Riker is suspect.
The Inner Light likely my most favorite episode. In a very strange way I can relate to the episode. I hated the Enterprise D never like the design or anything about it. It looked like a toy. Enterprise B and C much better.
Least interesting? It's the best Star Trek I've seen since First Contact
Great start. Promises to be a great series. Possibly even better than 1 and 2.
We don't Need to resurrect the old actor
This is not things we may have missed. This is just you narrating the episode.poor show dude
Overall, a good start. Exterior shots were beautiful. The soundtrack was perfect. Dialog was good. However, the interior lighting was waaaay too dark. I hope there is a plot reason for this and we eventually get the proper lighting the cast deserves. That's one thing that doesn't fit the TNG vibe and it was the thing that bothered me about the last TNG movies.
The actor playing her son is 35. That would mean he was born during season 2 of TNG when Beverly wasn't on Enterprise. And what's up with that ensign? They lingered on him too long.
This is true, but looking at him we can believe him to be in his early 20s. As you see more of him, you can see how young and impetuous he is.
@@ThePopcast Well there is definitely something "special" about him. Protecting him would be the only reason she cut everybody off for 20 years.
This episode is surely a great start!...
Delete it more interesting but still if you don't keep up with going on on each are canceled it gets complicated to keep up with! 🖖🏿✌️✌️🤨
I thought I'd never watch Picard again after the crappie season 1 and season 2 that made Picard seem like this feckless shell of his former self, but I saw some good reviews so I signed up for paramount plus. I really enjoyed episode 1! Fingers crossed and holding my breath that the season keeps going in the better direction.
The DNA of TNG is there now and for that, I am very thankful! There are aspects of the show that many fans can’t get use too, and I can understand that, but it is 20 years since Nemesis and story telling, time and technology has changed a great deal. Love it so far!!
It was an excellent episode I love the part where they dimensionally jump the federation building on a bunch of other buildings the first thoughts in my head was Rick Sanchez what are you up to to what is this evil Morty ?.
It was killer. Member berries, and outlaw diplomacy.
I'm going to be honest: All the TOS callbacks in a show that is derived from TNG, is an epic Eyeroll. We already have TOS callbacks in Strange New Worlds...picard should be strictly a dedication to TNG.
Thus, the Titan shouldn't have been a Neo-Constitution class...it should have been a Neo-Galaxy class. (eyeroll).
Berman's time in Star Trek sucked! They just wanted a black superhero, most of what she did was phony BS IMO!
That was not a review, more like a summary with SPOILERS.
I wasn't that impressed with this episode, but since it's one of two, I'll hold off.
After watching Episode 1 of Season 3, not off to a good start. It’s very dark, the plot themes are far too familiar Kurtzman ST. These folks may not have set out to make bad ST, yet they have done just that. Same old tired themes of conspiracy within the Federation, Starfleet, etc. And seriously - a LIFETIME medical physician turns into a wild space version female Rambo? Using a ridiculously over powered weapon that destroys life at the cellular level? That’s too large a leap for such a heartfelt character like Dr. Crusher. Most troubling - do these people have any idea how dark the sets are? I’ve got the brightness maxed out just to see some detail. Can’t even tell what color the ST uniforms are it’s so freaking dark ! Unless there’s an immediate course correction (I only have access to one episode per week) - no need to watch any further. It’s WAY too early to lobby for Terry Matalas to continue making this junk, UNLESS it gets better immediately. Perhaps it’s time to diversify the writing team - the constant, nonstop focus on SJ nonsense and personal sexuality is un-nerving and not ST canon. We get enough of that on daily news, talk shows, etc.
Hi Tim really appreciate your input! Hopefully as the shows continue to unfold you'll get a different take. Some of these initial things you've mentioned are not exactly what they seem :)
Good to hear - thank you !
the episode was so dark we couldnt see anything beside face on my video projector. Had to increase the light lmao. Episode of TNG/DS9 are fine, SG1 et Atlantis are fine to. It was not as dark as GOT winterfal episode but almost. So next time gonna watch him and my computer; but its nothing to compare to TNG or DS9. Character are not living on a ship or space station they are going on a quest. So its exactly like Picard s1 and s2. There is nothing inspirational, no beging nor ending to the episode. Character have problem like a bad SF show, shaw isnt logical, he isnt star fleet material, its not credible.
Jeri Ryan stole everyscene she was in. When is she going to get her own series??
I'm not only curious for more, I'M BEGGING FOR MORE! never really liked Crusher - hates Wesley Crusher. I was dazedly amazed for 2 days after watching this. Loving Matalas, he's Berman Mk2 (heh, careful, fans may turn on u before long!)
Hurry up next Thursday!
Anyone here agree that Jeri Ryan (Seven) should her her own spin off
Paramount has several spin offs in the wings. I'd prefer one with Jeri primarily because it will be set in the future. Ignore Discovery's distant future since they seem to have no continuity with the rest of the Star Trek universe anyway. Just continue the TOS-DS9-Voyager story. At least post-Voyager, if not post Picard. Lower Decks and Prodigy are set in roughly the right time, it would be nice to see a live-action show in that time too after Picard ends.
Section 31 with Yeoh, if it happens, will most likely be set just post Discovery's early years - or at roughly the same time as TOS. We don't need another series breaking continuity there.
Star Fleet Academy is likely to be set in the same time as Section 31 since it is another Discovery spin off. It would be better as a sequel to or spin off from Prodigy.
And Jeri as a Ranger or as a Captain would be an exciting fun show!
Did it make me curious about season 3.... No. Patrick Stewart soured me on Trek. If I do watch season 3 it'll probably be after the season is over... maybe.
Agreed. Looks horrible!
I'm the only Trek fan that found this episode just another episode of Picard. I got all the memberberries, which I felt were meh. I didn't find the tone, pace and average writing to be very interesting. It was fine. Kinda like the rest of Picard. Yeah....its fine and wasn't necessary. I hope it picks up!
Alone the fact that the showrunner is on a youtube show shows the different mindset. I hope we season keeps delivering and I hope they keep him around to become the future key person for Trek
How does Beverlys distress call end the relationship between Picard and Laris?? If anything, it lends to how strong it is because Laris tells him he has to go without letting her ego or selfishness interfere! She even says "these are the lives we chose", implying that they sometimes have to make sacrifices because of their choices & who they are. She loves him for that. She's not going to hold it against him. It might be an inconvenient situation, but It's a mature & adult realization of what needed to be done. That being Picard honoring his loyalty & the family bonds with his old crewmates. Doing the right thing as hes always done. But this doesn't kill their relationship! He's certainly not looking to pick up with Beverly where they left off! That ship SAILED. Decades ago! I just don't see how you got that idea that the relationship with Picard & Laris was done..
Perhaps it's not, but the look she gives when he says I'll be a few days and she said perhaps even longer than that made us think so. That said, their feelings are clear. We'll have to wait and see!
Finally decided to add to my extensive Star Trek collection on disc, Picard S3 fits nicely in my collection, hopefully a harbinger of Trek to come.
What is Elachi ship (from STO) attacking Dr. Crusher's ship? But they don't look like Elachi...
thank you see you next week my wife finishes work at 10 pm can only whatch first 30 minutes so happy found out what i missed looks like a great season but i said that after season 2 first epesode
Can I watch season 3 without watching 1 & 2?
Definite yes. I’m glad they experimented with new things in S1 and 2 but they were basically standalone stories that didn’t impress. The intros to 7 and Raffy in S1 don’t seem to play much into their background so far. 7 was freelance and now she’s an officer. Raffy was an officer with rough times but loyal to Picard. Done.
@Peter L. thank you. I grew up on TNG so I'm excited to get back to family
Picard is a robot. Why again did they make him an OLD robot?
My gf and I just watched it lastnight and was wanting to watch the next episode but learned that they are dropping 1 episode a week which sucks somewhat
That's going to totally be Picard son🤔
Thanks! 🖖
Finally listen to you guys and Robert Myer Burnett and got paramount plus and watched season 3 episode 1. Was really enjoyed it!! Can’t wait for episode 2!

Hail The Popcast. I watched ep 1 of Star Trek Picard season 3. I will admit that i did like what i saw. I do have a few minor criticisms such as the episode color is too dark and the pacing being a bit faster than previous shows, nevertheless, i am intrigued by the storyline. From what other trusted UA-camrs have already said ( you guys too) considering that they have watched the entire series, i am very much encouraged as too what is next as the storyline unfolds. Although i do have stong feelings concerning the current stewards of "New Trek" and how they have negatively treated the long time fan base regard previous works such as STD and all the other shows, i will continue to keep an open mind, separating Terry Matalis work from Alex Kurtzman. Thanks for the encouragement in suggesting that i watch season 3 while keeping an open mind. I will continue to do so and hopefully i will be satisfied with the end results. 🖖🏽
Wow, it suprised me that Jonathan Frakes of all people called himself "I am not a good actor". This man is humble indeed. He has been one of the higlights in TNG, together with Patrick Stewart. It is great that Terry recognized this quality and brings the dynamics between Riker and Picard forward in this season.
I Loved it and can't wait for the next (Generation) Show !!!!
