- In this video, I will review my Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue and my Seiko SPB143J1. I want to share my experience of owning these Tudor and Seiko for two years already. I bought them both new from Authorized Dealers, and I have them in my collection and my daily rotation. I traveled with diver watches from Tudor and Seiko, and now I want to share my experience and my thoughts about these two popular watches. I will show you the similarities between watches and how they are different. Which one is worth the money? Let's find out.

The fact that a Seiko is being compared to something 4x its price means it wins the comparison.
I adjusted my Seiko SPB143 in 5 positions to +5/-4. Never loses time, never gains time. It's just perfect. Just glad I never had to spend stupid money on a Tudor.
How do you do this?
@@zacksmith4906 timegrapher.
Buy a time grapher and you can do it to with some practice and basic watch adjustment understanding.
seiko movements are ridiculously easy to regulate , escapement and watch has a video on it its really easy , i have 2 seikos with 4R movements running 3 seconds a day over . my alpinist is at -1 . as long as you dont have shaky hands id recommend learning .
I downloaded a timegrapher app which told me my watches range from -11/+9. It'll be nice to brave regulating them myself
I wear my bb58 all the time. It is timeless, classy and simple enough to be an only one watch collection. Great video
Thanks. I truly think that BB58 is still one of the best models from Tudor. Can't wait to see what they will bring us next year. Or maybe something even sooner.
I disagree i think a diver looks tacky on a suit you should have atleast one clean dial watch to wear on suits diver will put down the look as a whole when you wear something formal
I think something like a datejust is perfect 1 watch
@@songoku-jx3cb you're welcome to your opinion. I rarely dress formal so it's good enough for me
@@songoku-jx3cbdress divers look good with suits, but toolier watches would clash with formal wear.
@@Ferien7 no they don't they look sporty the bezel doesnt merge with formal wear
Excellent comparison, thank you from a Seiko owner (on a Seiko budget)
My 62 MAS 140th anniversary edition came with 39seconds slow per day error, I sent it back to Seiko to be regulated and it came back 10.3 seconds per day slow!!!! Such a pity as it really is a great watch. I have 5 Ali Express NH35 powered watches and they all run about 5 seconds fast. Buck up Seiko! Very Helpful review.
I own the BB58 blue paired with the Uncleseiko jubilee bracelet and it feels unique, I love this one very muchhh
BB58 on jubilee looks awesome.
I own the BB58 and love it. I use it almost everyday. I also own the Seiko GMT Blue and Black. Love it but for no particularly reason I find myself not using it very often. Cheers.
Yeah, I feel like sometimes we love Seiko watches for no particular reason. Just because :)
I’ve owned both and loved both, if I were to buy either again I’d be tempted to get a Seiko and pay for it to be regulated properly as that was my main gripe with it. The Tudor stayed on the bracelet and could easily be a one watch that rarely comes off the wrist but the Seiko had something special and was a better strap monster with the flatter lugs.
I remember taking it on holiday to Crete, with the bracelet, a leather strap, a black rubber strap and 2-3 natos. It felt great mixing it up each day and night, really versatile piece. Ultimately for me the accuracy was annoying with the Seiko though and it stopped it being a regular daily watch.
What do you have now instead ?
How did the bb wear compared to the 143 ?
seiko movements are ridiculously easy to regulate , escapement and watch has a video on it its really easy , i have 2 seikos with 4R movements running 3 seconds a day over . my alpinist is at -1 . as long as you dont have shaky hands id recommend learning .
Dude you were on vacation so how important was timekeeping anyway?
@bigbodykarate6403 Hi is the 6R35 as easy to regulate as the 4R
Thx for the great content. In my experience, both have a place in one’s collection. The BB58 is a great daily that does not look out of place while ‘dressed up’. But at 1/4 the cost and with it’s hardened coating, I don’t think twice about wearing the SPB143 when I’m expecting to knock it around for the day doing chores.
The accuracy of the BB58 is amazing (+2) while the SPB143 is, as you say, way off.
So they are really two different watches. Plus, with both, you have both blue and grey colors to work with in how you dress up or down.
Thanks for your feedback. I agree that both can perfectly coexist in one collection and that SPB143 could be a great "beater" watch. I also wear it often when I do some house chores :)
Not sure where in Canada but any recommended place to get a automatic watch regulated around Greater Toronto Area?
Excellent review. I had the Spb143 and loved "the look" beautiful watch but the movement was very disappointing. I bought it new from AD, was sent back after 18 months to be regulated, problems continued. I ended up selling it. I would by it again in a heartbeat if movement was more reliable.
I feel your pain. I hope Seiko will improve their movements.
Have exact same issues with my spb143. Poor timekeeping, seems to vary greatly each day. Bezel is also off just like yours. No more Seiko for me, its very overpriced for the quality. Also, not seen this mentioned much, its very top heavy...Perhaps having a steel bezel and the height of the watch. Great comparison, save your money and go for the Tudor if you ask me...
How much did you spend on the seiko?
I went with the Seiko SPB143. The price was right. I bought it at Vaughan Mills watch store. They gave me 200 dollars off. If I was going to spend 5 thousand Canadian I would buy a Seiko with a spring drive.
I live in the Woodbridge area and was keen on trying one on before purchasing the seiko (as i have large wrists). If you dont mind me asking, which store gave you that great deal?
I own both.
Seiko 143 wears a bit larger.
Accuracy on the seiko not great. If worn 24 / 7 mine runs about minus 20 seconds a day. If taken off for any period of time it starts dropping time like crazy.
Generally I set the spb a couple of minutes fast and wear as daily beater Mon to Fri. By Friday it’s spot on!
Too many people have issues with the Seiko accuracy. I actually do the same with my SPB143 when wearing it.
I’ve owned both, and there really is no comparison quality wise. Looks wise, is the only realistic comparison to be had. Both are fantastic looking watches.
I really like my spb147 but it gains 20 seconds a day. I took it to the store I got it from and they said they can’t regulate it because it’s still under warranty and it’s technically within specifications for the movement
Yes the accuracy of that Seiko movement disappointing
Thanks for this comparison. I always enjoy your content as we have similar tastes in watches. I have the SPB155 and got very lucky with COSC tolerances and no QC issues. But as you know it's priced much more competitively than the SPB143, especially at a discount. Despite my good experience, I'd personally hesitate to buy the SPB143 when there are other great options at that price as you mentioned. Currently longing for the BB54, though! Take care!
Thanks so much for your kind words. Glad you like my videos. I actually also have a Baby Alpinist only mine is Blue (SPB157). No quality control issues but the movement is also "behaving". I would say that with discount or pre-owned a SPB143 is a good proposition but at the same time there are other solid options on the market.
The BB54 is fantastic. I am hoping that Tudor will introduce other dial colours with this line sometime soon.
What great options would you recommend instead of the SPB143?
Thanks for this excellent review! Would love to see a SPB143 with a high accuracy quartz movement.
Thanks you. I would prefer if Seiko would improve their mechanical movement.
Meh, I don't find mechanical movements worth getting unless the watch has a sapphire caseback and it's particularly striking to look at it. Quartz is better in every way besides presentation. A truly modern 62mas tool watch should be using quartz anyways@@OneManReviews
Honestly for the money the Longines Hydroconquest is probably a better deal than both these watches, but in saying that...the Seiko design is very attractive.
I love Tudor BB but hate the fake rivets...why?
I own the SPB 143 and love it . I paid $1000 u.s . No tax
How is the accuracy of your model?
Well I believe the contest between these two designs is unfair. When you pay more for an item, it usually means it offers better quality or performance and of course between these two the Tudor wins. On the the other hand, for a few more dollars I could have a spring drive. If your going to compare a Mercedes to anything, you don't compare it to a Toyota, you compare to a Lexus.
My Seiko SPB143 is +2 sec per day out the box. You sure you haven't magnetised the movement?
It's great that your Seiko runs that accurate.
I also have complaints about the Seiko 6R movements. In the past 8 yrs I've owned over 20 Seikos. Of them, 4 with the 6R, and 9 with the 4R. All of my 6Rs are highly inconsistent. On the edge of the specs or outside of it by a good bit, and vary greatly if worn, or sitting in watch box, or winder. And they even vary from week to week 🤷.
And all mine with the "entry level" 4Rs have been great, always consistent. All within +/-15 secs/day, and many less than +/-10 (some 4Rs even within COSC). So I'm a bit frustrated in the 6Rs costing 2-3x the price, and that's what's mainly offered in the Seiko's that may interest me. Also there's been no real QC issues with any of mine except one.
All this is disappointing because I really like my SPB147 & SPB213. They're some of my favorite watches to wear. 😐
Seikos are easy to regulate from what I hear
Both are pretty but only one is a true nice watch. Tudor by a mile. Not in the same class at all.
If Seiko would improve their movement it would make the watch well worth the retail.
Am I wrong or the BB58 bezel is misaligned?
No it’s fine.
I own both of them, and I prefer the Seiko. That said, I do not quite like the weight of the Seiko and prefer the wearability of the Tudor.
Seriously?!
Preown Bb58 in “very good” condition, full set are selling at $2800-2900, negotiable.
925 are selling around low 3k.
Tudor is constantly cannibalizing itself with new hype models, current bel-du-jour is the 54.
Comparing a watch that’s retailed 30-35%to another is disappointing.
Even then, similarly worn spb143 are going for 900, losing about 3-400.
Putting it squarely in the beater/daily driver with low service/maintenance cost.
It’s like comparing fit n finish in a Civic TypeS vs BMW m340.
Seriously?!
1000 euros a lot of money for a unnecessary item that one struggles to tolerate, outch.
Wish seiko had a incentive to make these watches better
The question is black bay 58 or black bay 54?
I like the blue version better. If Tudor make 54 different colour versions I will be considering it.
@@OneManReviews but aside from color, which do you like better
@@Ferien7 Hard to say. I still enjoy my BB58 a lot, but I also want to compare these two side by side to see.
But the Seiko is a prettier watch😍
Seiko is very nice but I like the BB58 design better :)
As much as it is a very clear fast that the Tudor is overpriced (regardless of it being very valuable overall), don't you ever compare a Tudor with a Tag Heuer :-) Tag Heuer is garbage... not even worth thinking about spending money on, unless you get some silly no brainer discount and you just buy it as a beater. most people think that "Tag Heuer" is the same quality like the older "Heuer" brand used to be... far from true! it's almost borderline with premium priced fashion watches
the Seiko "62MAS" Re-Issue is IMHO well worth the money, only bummer is of course the stupid Lume part they have added at 3 o'clock to all watches produced after 2020 (that was done in order to maintain compliance with ISO which means the watch is still certified as a professional diver), I wonder if they have fixed the movement running too slow issues with the slightly later editions of this watch (e.g. SPB147..)
I actually have a different opinion on Tudor and Seiko. I think that Tudor is worth the money given the quality, specs, size, and design. Seiko is overpriced considering quality problems and poor movement performance. I also have TAG in my collection and I think it is a decent watch.
Tag is well known for being a garbage, no news here. The news here that they make efforts to break out of that image, as that market is dying out. Stay tuned for new models, including ones branded as "Heuer" only.
@@antonv5488 I wish! I doubt that "Tag Heuer" can ever go back to what the original brand was, now that they are owned by a corporation who made them into an overpriced fashion watch brand where you get a watch with a total value of about 300 euros and pay over a grand for it.
would be lovely to see a genuine re-production of a "Heuer" Carrera chronograph (with a movement reproduction or a similar one) available to buy
Yes they are starting to get back into investing in their products as opposed to simply marketing crappy watches @@antonv5488
100% polished sides of the Tudor looks kinda flimsy 100 dollar Casio.
Your compairing seiko to a 4x price ( tudor. ) What wrong with you.? Hahaha
Did you watch the video? I am not comparing them by price.
The SPB143 is over priced. If i cannot afford BB58, I will still not choose SPB143 as at that price there are many watches that are cheaper and better.
I think that with a discount or pre-owned the SPB143 is a good watch. But considering Seiko issues there are safer choices on the market for sure.
Which better and cheaper watches are you talking about
@@Ferien7i agree.
hyperbole is strong in this video
Seiko movements are junk. Sorry :/
No contest the Seiko movement is trash.
This particular one seems to be.

Wondering what is the accuracy and the bezel situation with your Japanese version.
