  • In this video, I will review my Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue and my Seiko SPB143J1. I want to share my experience of owning these Tudor and Seiko for two years already. I bought them both new from Authorized Dealers, and I have them in my collection and my daily rotation. I traveled with diver watches from Tudor and Seiko, and now I want to share my experience and my thoughts about these two popular watches. I will show you the similarities between watches and how they are different. Which one is worth the money? Let's find out.

The fact that a Seiko is being compared to something 4x its price means it wins the comparison.

I have both (the newer SPB455) and BB58. Along with Rolex 114060 and Seamaster 2531.80 and 2220.80. I respectfully disagree with most of your points. The BB58 is great but I wouldn't call it a clear win. IMO Tudor has QC issues for the price. Divers from Doxa (poor lume and case finishing, odd lug width, base SW200), Hamilton (bad lume and bracelets, too thick), Mido (too large and odd lug widths), Tissot (too large, powermatic 80 with plastic pallet fork, mineral bezels) have compromising issues that rule them out for me. I have tried them and still think Seiko SPB is better.
    1. Lume is slightly brighter on Tudor at first but both are very long lasting and Seiko is less "splotchy" because it's very thickly applied on the Seiko.
    2. New SPB has shorter lug to lug than BB58 now.
    3. Endlink fitment is a non-issue with the Seiko. Yes, the BB58 has tighter fitting end links but it is not noticeable on the wrist and barely visible.
    4. Springbars on SPB are much thicker, heavier duty, as well as the case having drilled lug holes.
    5. The handset on the Seiko SPB IMO is better finished than the BB58.
    6. Also, if you take a look at many preowned BB58 listings, the 12 oclock indice or Tudor printed logo is often misaligned.
    7. The Tudor Bb58 movement cannot be regulated. It is running -4s a day. I regulated my 6R55 Seiko movement to be +1 second a day. However, Tudor movement is full bridge to technically it might be more robust?
    8. Case and bracelet on Seiko is smoother and has less sharp angles that don't dig into wrist. SPB is more comfortable. I actually had to use dremel tool, sanding sticks, and polishing to smooth out the bracelet and case sharpness on the BB58.
    9. The SPB has a divers extension. BB58 does not.
    10. New SPB has 300M WR, opposed to the 200M WR from the BB58.
    11. BB58 bezel is 60 click, SPB 120 click.
    12. Seiko has Diashield, BB58 does not.
    13. BB58 has lume pip on bezel reportedly falling out. SPB is inlaid inside bezel and protected with sapphire cap to prevent damage or falling out.
    14. SPB has smooth crown, but it is a little harder to disengage than BB58, Tudor has smoother crown action.

Really. You’ll have to share your secret. My experience of the positional accuracy has been the opposite of what you have achieved. I can dial in great results when the watch is level with zero beat error and good amplitude but tilt it off the horizontal and the accuracy and amplitude drops off a cliff. I have to adjust it fast on the level to counter it running slow in any vertical position.

I have the Seiko and love everything about it. It’s a great utility watch and I like most things that some complain about. I don’t care that the crown is not signed. What value does that add? I like the strap and find it comfortable. I understand that strap comfort is subjective, but it can be swapped out. The bezel is great and lines up perfectly. I don’t have any issue with the movement.

  • @manuel_winde

I’ve owned both and loved both, if I were to buy either again I’d be tempted to get a Seiko and pay for it to be regulated properly as that was my main gripe with it. The Tudor stayed on the bracelet and could easily be a one watch that rarely comes off the wrist but the Seiko had something special and was a better strap monster with the flatter lugs.
I remember taking it on holiday to Crete, with the bracelet, a leather strap, a black rubber strap and 2-3 natos. It felt great mixing it up each day and night, really versatile piece. Ultimately for me the accuracy was annoying with the Seiko though and it stopped it being a regular daily watch.

Seiko 143 wears a bit larger.
Accuracy on the seiko not great. If worn 24 / 7 mine runs about minus 20 seconds a day. If taken off for any period of time it starts dropping time like crazy.

Thx for the great content. In my experience, both have a place in one’s collection. The BB58 is a great daily that does not look out of place while ‘dressed up’. But at 1/4 the cost and with it’s hardened coating, I don’t think twice about wearing the SPB143 when I’m expecting to knock it around for the day doing chores.
The accuracy of the BB58 is amazing (+2) while the SPB143 is, as you say, way off.

I also have complaints about the Seiko 6R movements. In the past 8 yrs I've owned over 20 Seikos. Of them, 4 with the 6R, and 9 with the 4R. All of my 6Rs are highly inconsistent. On the edge of the specs or outside of it by a good bit, and vary greatly if worn, or sitting in watch box, or winder. And they even vary from week to week 🤷.
And all mine with the "entry level" 4Rs have been great, always consistent. All within +/-15 secs/day, and many less than +/-10 (some 4Rs even within COSC). So I'm a bit frustrated in the 6Rs costing 2-3x the price, and that's what's mainly offered in the Seiko's that may interest me. Also there's been no real QC issues with any of mine except one.
All this is disappointing because I really like my SPB147 & SPB213. They're some of my favorite watches to wear. 😐

the Seiko "62MAS" Re-Issue is IMHO well worth the money, only bummer is of course the stupid Lume part they have added at 3 o'clock to all watches produced after 2020 (that was done in order to maintain compliance with ISO which means the watch is still certified as a professional diver), I wonder if they have fixed the movement running too slow issues with the slightly later editions of this watch (e.g. SPB147..)
