As a retired physician, I can tell you I was caught up in the sales pitch of the expensive watch companies. Yes, I own Rolex’s , Omegas ,Breitling, even a Petek. Now I give them away to young family members. The Seiko and even some Citizen watches are better buys. After all, what you need is great quality and reliability to tell time. Kill off the high prices by not falling for name brand products and they will reduce prices.

That is pretty fussy 😂. Watch collectors are indeed a confusing bunch. Funny that the clear flaws in a Rolex can be passed off as Interesting quirks but on a Seiko are deal breakers. Do you not have a Rolex with a stamped clasp? I think there might be a clear reason why you don’t like your Seiko as much as your Rolex and Omega - sooner you accept that then you can move forward more effectively. Best of luck finding the perfect diver dude - there is one out there for us all.

Its not fair to compare a Seiko Prospex 143 to an Omega or Rolex. The 143 was also available in a Grand Seiko version - called the SLA017. THAT would be a fair comparison.

I'd ask, "why build a 3 watch collection including 2 of the most commonly owned luxury watches?" Nothing against the Speedy or explorer, they're both great. But also, kinda boring and everywhere. The problem with a 3 watch collection is that all three need to be as versatile and unexciting so as to fit as many applications as possible. It's unsurprising that they both have black dials for this reason. 5 would be better but ideally 10. Then you should have room for fun and more diversity of colour, shape, dial texture, movement, bracelet etc.

    • @ThePlaiibox
      @ThePlaiibox 2 роки тому +5

@Cana Gummy wasn't advice. Just opinion.
Also, with the hype around them, how can you be sure the speedy and explorer are completely chosen purely on the basis of personal taste and have absolutely nothing to do with the history and background to each and by extension what others will see in you if you wear them? C'mon this 3 watch collection absolutely screams what's thought to be cool to watch people but has little that reflects the owners personality other than to say 'I like what other people think I should like'. THAT is why it would make sense to expand the collection to include more variety and depth. Because as it stands, it's shallow..........only my opinion (not advice)

Back in the day I was deciding between this Seiko and Certina DS Action Diver 38. While Seiko might be a better known brand among watch enthusiasts, Certina was better in literally any other way: 300m ISO Diver, smaller size (38mm, so it disappears on the wrist), better movement (80 hours pf power reserve and Nivachron anti magnetic spring, better accuracy), and of course QC is miles better on Certina.
Only “issue” is that lug width on Certina is 19mm, but bracelet is so good that I don’t even want to change it.

If you want a good seiko get the sla043. It's quality , and made just as well as your rolex and speedie. It doesn't come on a bracelet however, but it's not top heavy on a strap either. It's as good as seiko make in terms of build quality diver. And because it's made of the new ever brilliant steel it's 1.7 harder than normal 316l steel. It also houses the very reliable 8l35 movement made in the grand seiko factory. It is limited to 1700 worldwide , so it's also got a bit of exclusive benefits too. A beautiful watch by anyones standard.

I do own the SPB143, and agree with you that I really like it a lot, but don’t love it. I also have the explorer, the new 36 mm 124270, and totally agree with having that in the collection. I envy you being able to keep it pared down to three watches. I have way way more than that, but the beauty of having fewer watches, is you get to enjoy each one more. I guess my thoughts on the third watch would be a little bit to work backwards… To figure out what role in the collection you want the third watch to play. Don’t know if you are a dressy guy or would need a dress watch… Also regarding budget, I know you sold off the entire collection to get the Explorer, which I can’t disagree with. Since you’ve got versatile, daily wear, black dial watches pretty covered already, I would be thinking outside those metrics. If you are a guy that even once in a while needs to dress up or go to anything formal, I wouldn’t hesitate to look at JLC Reverso. Preowned mono face models you could get for 4 to $5000. Sure, a lot of people wouldn’t wear that informally or day to day, although I would in a heartbeat, but you already have the explorer, which covers almost every situation otherwise. A quartz Cartier as potentially a more budget friendly option in the dress watch category. Nomos Orion or a vintage Universal Geneve Polerouter also come to mind…. beautiful dressy but versatile options. Also Grand Seiko SBGW231 is a beautiful, formal yet versatile option.
A few other thoughts (various possible third watch options, since I don’t know you personally, and can’t guess what you are leaning towards):
Panerai PAM 111… A classic Panerai model. You either love it or hate it.
IWC Mark XVIII… specifically the le petite prince, blue dial. Brings a pop of color, and still pretty versatile.
Casio G-Shock GW-M5610….. like the Panerai, you either love it or hate it, but super budget friendly, and versatile in any situation where you wouldn’t want to bang up a nice watch. A hell of a lot of functionality for $100 or so.
Tudor Black Bay 58….. since you were looking at a dive watch, with a bezel, this is an option that would solve the weight/heftiness issue. Certainly a bit more expensive, but really a damn good watch. A number of dial options if you didn’t want to go for the black, which is the one I own, but for something a little different from your current collection, the blue dial would certainly be nice.
    Thank you for the video

Own an SPB143 myself. Do I love it as much as my Tudor BB58 or say a Submariner? No. But I still enjoy it non-the-less. In certain lights that sunburst grey dial with the hands & applied markers looks stunning. I wear mine on a waffle rubber strap & never noticed the weight. It serves as my beater type diver.
I tend to agree that if you are limiting to just 3 pieces overall then this may not be that ultimate final piece you are after. What about a Tudor GMT for both a dive look plus a GMT complication? Otherwise one of the new Grand Seiko divers? Or lastly, if you’d be happy to have 2 of the same brand in the collection, a Submariner or Seamaster? I’d also look to add a bit of colour either way to contrast your black speedy & Explorer. Good luck with it 👍
Ps. The bezel alignment on your SPB143 looks really good to me!!

Come on now, I'm not the biggest fan of the bracelet myself, but "no taper at all" is just factually incorrect. It has 2mm of taper, which is pretty much standard on modern watches. Not as great as the 4-5mm taper you get on a Rolex or an Oris, but still far better than no taper at all, like what you get on an Omega Seamaster 300m.

It has the same fking issue as the seiko when you hack the watch to reset the time, it bloody winds the movement. It's because there are so many small toothed gears rubbing against that wheel. All of which are quite thin components, so it reverberates.

I've had this watch for 2 weeks and my observations (pros and cots) are the same as yours, except for the bezel resistance. Like you, I also prefer to wear my watches a little tight to avoid movement on the wrist. I picked up a Strapcode jubilee bracelet (20mm taper to 18mm) earlier this week and find that the watch is much more stable on my wrist on the jubilee than with the OEM bracelet. I think the jubilee bracelet has saved the day because I now intend to keep the watch when, before, I was thinking of flipping it. It now has taken the position of black dress diver in my 6-watch permanent collection (along with Doxa SUB 300 Searambler, Omega 3861 Speedmaster, Grand Seiko Snowflake, Ball Trainmaster Standard Time 135 Anniversary, and Doxa SUB 800Ti Professional).

@@HarrisonElmore ahhhh gotcha! Well you have two classics! Such a tough spot. I've owned a ton of divers and I finally settled on the super ocean 42 in blue. I've owned the bb58 (sold it) as well as the pelly. Have also had pre ceramic subs, bunch of aquis, blue sea master 300s, bunch of seikos, doxa. Out of all of them, none of them resonated like the SO 42 in blue. From the tapered lugs, to the blue DLC treated bezel, the screw down bezel, probably the best sapphire crystal I've ever seen (sometimes its so clear it feels like there's no glass), the best lume I've ever seen hands down, and it's accurate to - 1 a day for me. In the sun the blue has this gorgeous Grey hue to it. If you get a chance try it on a Breitling boutique. If it doesn't sing to you, I wish you the best on your search!!

My three watch collection consists in:
One diver/toolwatch for weekends, holidays, travelling: this SEIKO SPB143
One everyday go to office go anywhere piece: Rolex Datejust 36mm on jubilee with silver dial and domed bezel
My dressy piece (even if the datejust make this job also this is an icon and a personal/romantic choice): Cartier Tank Must
So I have a diver/tool, a daily and a personal iconic romantic choice. It took me time, but I love my three watch collection.

Why does it absolutely have to be a 3-watch collection? I understand not wanting to go crazy with too many watches, but what if you find one you really desire, but still want to keep the three you already have?
Having said that, this watch definitely doesn't belong in your 3-watch collection because if you are a watch lover (yet wanting to only keep it at 3) then it should be three watches that you absolutely love and are completely sure of.

Just seeing this after deciding this week to sell my SPB213 (white dial blue version of the SPB143) agree with a lot of your points, particularly the top heavyness when on the bracelet. The 213 is beautiful but it's ever changing dial colour puts me off, I'd of loved it to be just a crisp matte white. Although it's main problem for me is that it's competing with an Explorer, Speedmaster, BB58 and a BBPro for my wrist time and there's just too many small compromises on this one.

4:22 so you "planned to solve it" with the tropic strap, but instead you ended up putting the tropic strap on your speedmaster and then complained that you still had the top heavy wobble issue on your SPB when you put a nato strap on it....what?!?! lol. Wasn't the whole purpose of getting the tropic strap so that it could be used on the SPB to try and eliminate the wobble issue? I mean, you cant really expect different results when you think up a solution, then get the parts necessary for the solution, but then dont end up using said solution lol.

These are probably some of the oddest cons I’ve seen for this watch. It sounds like you need a Tudor bb58 or a Tudor pro if you want a date and gmt.
The spb isn’t that heavy but maybe your threshold is much lower. Tudor Pelagos 39 sounds like it would work too.
The winding as you are screwing it back in is not a huge deal. I’ve had a Hamilton that did the same thing.
Ps. Try the chevron strap from crown and buckle. It’s an adjustable nato so you can get that perfect fit.
