Avion Travel Trailers are like an Airstream only better.

- I was camping at the Outer Banks a number of years ago. An Airstream Club was camping on a cauldesac behind us. A young boy walked by and the child asked his father if my Avion was an Airstream. The father replied "It's like an Airstream only better."
Both brands have pros and cons and some people own both. This short documentary gives the Avion point of view. I hope you enjoy the video.

At 1:22, that is ME sitting on the picnic table bench, in front of the 19' Nomad that my parents had.... That was the summer of 1971, we were at the Tra-Tel RV Park within sight of the evening fireworks at Disneyland. After that Nomad, Dad had a 23' Mobile Scout, then a 27' Airstream, then a 1980 or 1981 Avion 34V. THAT is how I learned the differences between Airstream and Avion, and THAT is why my wife and I have our own 1987 Avion 34W!
That picture was from a Polaroid camera my dad had. If I remember correctly, it was the Land Camera..... take picture, pull out the film or whatever it was called.... seems like you'd wait some short length of time, peel it apart, then apply some kind of stinky "fixer" to it. I still have the original picture.
Wanna hear a story??? That trip to L.A. was the 2nd leg of our travels that summer. Started with a trip to the Kingston, NY area. On the way home from there, we stopped overnight at a KOA in Mt. Gilead, OH.(There was a bumper sticker on that Nomad bumper from that KOA) I woke up during the night sick to my stomach, and it kept going..... I thought I was going to throw up my socks!! Hugged a bucket in the back of that Ford Camper Special all the way back home to Tulsa. Went to the doctor..... he checked my appendix, sent me to the hospital, I had it taken out. I think I was in the hospital 4 or 5 days, got out, and the next day we hit the road to L.A. In that picture, I still had the stitches from the surgery. I had to spend a WEEK watching my siblings swim in the pool at that park all day...... it was torture!! I remember standing in the rear bathroom of that Nomad, looking at the pool, with Dad doing the snip-YANK, snip-YANK process to remove those stitches!! Then I could go swimming!!!
I am glad me and my wife bought our triple axle Avion. My father-in-law told me about it and fell in love with it. I seen potential so I bought it. The trailer is pretty much all there just small minor things needing replaced. I should have it on the road 2024.
I love this video! Thank you for making it and preserving this history. ❤
Thank you for the video! Currently traveling the country with my partner in our ‘84 34ft Avion. We love her, she’s a ton of work to fix, but the quality is unmatched!
I have a 34w and previously I had a 28ft Lagrande. These are the very finest trailers ever produced.
I think there’s a place in the market for an Airstream competitor. Competition means more features, better quality and better prices for the end user.
I'm the great-granddaughter of Robert and Frieda Cayo, I drive past the old Cayo building in Watervliet, Michigan shown at 2:59 often, and my dad actually used to work there installing the cabinets and other interior features when he was a teenager around the late 70's-early 80's
I'm so glad I came across this channel, it's so cool seeing so many people enjoying and taking great care of their Avions and seeing a bit of my hometown and family history out here on the big ol interwebs, lmao :P This video was really informative and entertaining and I love seeing the passion that went into its creation, great job and I look forward to seeing more content ✌️😁
Go to silveravion.com and find the archives section. There are some pictures of your great grandparents there.
@@OfficialSilverAvion Thank you, that's so cool, I really appreciate it ✌️😁
The Cayos are part of the awesome history of Avion..... My wife and I are the recipients of their work. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this video, I'm in the final throws of remodeling my 1972 Avion Voyaguer-25. Having owned and remodeled two Airstream trailers ( Safari-25 & Globetrotter-19 ) prior to my efforts with my Avion, I can say with absolute certainty that Avion is superior throughout. Being intimately familiar with every nut, bolt and rivet on both trailers, I'd pick the Avion ever time.
Regards
Sonny
That is high praise. Would love pics or video to post on your project.
@@OfficialSilverAvion Thanks for your comment, I've always had a great respect and appreciation for craftsmanship and quality, two things we seldomly see in today's world. Not to take anything from Airstream, I've owned and enjoyed two of their trailers. However, in a unbiased and fair comparison Avion is superior to Airstream in just about every way. Without offense to my Airstream friends, please give me a chance to explain my stance. After undertaking a comprehensive remodeled of both the Airstream and now my Avion, the differences between the two are quite easy to see.
To begin with the Avion frame is heavier and consist of three beams not two. The Avion floating axle system is far superior to Airstreams axle system. The interior and exterior aluminum skins are of a heavier gauge, and Avions closed cell insulation is far superior to that of Airstream. The floor of the Avion consist of a 1" rigidity foam core sandwiched with plywood on either side, Airstream has a single layer of plywood and glass insulation below. The cabinets in the Avion are far better than those in the Airstream.
It would appear that Airstreams philosophy was to make a good travel trailer while keeping its overall weight to a minimum. I'm not knocking Airstream by any measure, I have enjoyed both my 1968 Safari-25 and my 1969 Globetrotter-19, they were both good travel trailers.
Avion on the other seemed less concerned with weight and more interested in building the highest quality possible given the limitations associated with constructing travel trailers.
For now, I'm hoping to wrap up my 1972 Avion Voyageur-25 remodel before years end. If you have a email address you can share on this forum. I'd be happy to respond, we could chat in more detail why I like my Avion so much.
Regards
Sonny

I think the only negative is the weight because it may require a tow vehicle that is more robust. That said if it is matched up properly it tows beautifully. I have never towed an Airstream but can't imagine it being better.
@@OfficialSilverAvion That's very true, I tower the Airstreams with a F-150 equipped with a 4.6 liter V-8. It did really well towing the Globetrotter-19 but struggled with the Safari-25. I now tow with a F-250 equipped with a 6.2 liter V-8, it towers the Avion with no problems whatsoever.

Always loved these since I first saw one, would love to have one
Thanks for spreading the word about Avions. Just wish we could've seen a few full interiors to back up what you say.
I should have included mine.
@@OfficialSilverAvion I bet it's a doozie!
I just remembered this video showing the interior ua-cam.com/video/O6zsnbtGVgM/v-deo.html
@@OfficialSilverAvion Cool! Thanks for the update!
What's with NBC Peacock Avatar?
I have a 1990 38’ Avion 5th wheel with slide, and sold my airstream. Holy cow, what an upgrade!
Loved the video. Grandpa pulled his Avion with a Buick LeSabre. I just bought an Airstream. Would have gotten an Avion if they were still making them.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Bet your grandpa loved that big LeSabre.
Great video. As a child in the 1960's some of the folks in our camping club had Avions. Some had Airstreams. We had a Holiday Rambler. I knew the Avions were special. Fast forward to 2017. We purchased a new Airstream and have since purchased a 2019 Airstream Flying Cloud 25' Rear Bed Twin.If the Avions were still being made we probably would have bought one. Keep the faith and restore what you can.
My grandparents had an Avion. So many fond memories from summer trips and some during school. My grandmother passed away at campground in Pigeon Forge, TN. As upsetting as that was, she died doing what her and my grandfather loved doing.
Great video. I own an avion trailer 33f manufactured in 1988. I put it in front of an antique shop near my house and enjoy it with my wife and child.
Grandpa had one
very cool. thank you!!
I have an '87 34X. Fixed it up once with new everything. We live in WV, and have hauled it FL, ME, and everywhere in between. Really like the old thing. I got it about '06. I need to redo it again, but she's still solid :)
Saw an Avion in a storage...had never seen one or heard of them
What area do you live?
Nice video thanks. However, with all due respect, they’re called A-vion, Avion not aveion. It’s not a tomato toMAto or potato poTOTo. I toured the factory where they were made in Benton Harbor, Michigan in 79 with a grand Uncle who owned them. Great quality solid well built units
I took a tour in 86. At one time they would them there. I don't know about pronunciation but I am from Chicago and it is our accent. I dangle my participle too.
Glad you enjoyed it.
All my paperwork says Avion? Hmm…
I have an 1989 avión 32
IF they're of the same quality and cost less, they're better, IF they cost more, they're no better, they just cost more...
Airstreams are outrageously priced, and there are better values out there, remember, cost doesn't always equate to quality...
I would not pay their prices.
I restored a 1978 Avion 7.9 meter and just acquired a 1978 Avion Argosy 27' (about the same size). I'll tell you that the Avion is by far the more solid, sturdy and well-preserved of the two. I could call the Argosy a shite-hole but that's only because the previous owner didn't take care of it. Side-by-side the Avion wins in every respect, glad I got one! At the end of the day though, you'll gain more sweat equity in an Airstream trailer just because of the cult-following and the cool-factor, unfortunately.
In the first 30 seconds you lost me… Avion is pronounced A (like what Fonzie said) Avion .. I grew up in one as my grandparents, then my parents, and now I own an Avion.
Great that you did your research but it makes me cringe every time you say the name of a bottled water company
I have had people tell me I pronounce it wrong. I have owned Avion since 1987 and I created the silveravion.com website. So other than pronunciation there is no inaccuracies.
To heavy ???? Lol what aluminum trailers are the lightest... Avion is way better then airstream ... Did you compare the 2022 models ????? Ohh yaaa nvm
The 5th wheel nicknamed "the whale" was too heavy to be practical
@@OfficialSilverAvion any idea what the weight would roughly be of a gutter 5th wheel avion?
