  • We have a treat for you today!! (And for us too!)
    In this video, we met up with our friend Jim Vititow with United RV in Fort Worth, Texas, and he gives us a full tour of his new trailer. He recently purchase a vintage 1985 Avion 34V. For those that don't know, it's the BIG triple axle Avion.
    He's done a fantastic job of keeping this amazing trailer original, but he's also added some amazing upgrades. He shows you everything he's done to update his trailer, so grab a pen because you're going to want to make a list for which options you want to add to yours!
    Here are some of the things he's done:
    - Installed a 10-gallon water tank
    - Changed trailer suspension
    - installed new battery box on the trailer tongue
    - Sealed trailer roof with Gaco Roof Coating: amzn.to/3pkAwzC
    - Installed new Electric fridge in trailer
    - Repaired and rhino lined rock guard
    - New trailer tires and wheels
    - New LED trailer lights
    - Rewired trailer to 50 Amp
    - Installed new bumper on RV
    - Polished the anodized Aluminum skin
    - New bathroom plumbing
    - Install new RV Air conditioners
    - Installed new Max fans
    And much more.
    He has done a great job, and we greatly appreciate him taking the time to show us his beautiful trailer.
    Enjoy the tour!!!

    I’ve got this exact same one except for the interior layout mine has the rear Queen bed I have had it for 25 years and love it.
    They don’t make anything that compares to the quality or better yet the durability these days
    I did all leather upholstery, painted pale white cabinets, and true hard wood floors to match and it looks great
    I will never Sale this camper
    Looks great

    Enjoyed your video tour. You mentioned sanding the cabinets to remove the old shellac. Using denatured alcohol will remove shellac without the sanding. Cleans up well.

      Hi, Leslye! I 100% have to agree with you. Jim Vititow did an AH-mazing job on his Avion. He is the director of service for a large RV dealer, and he is ALL about attention to detail and getting the job done right the first time. His updates are top notch.

    Wow that Avion looks good. I just bought one exactly like the one in the video. I am in the process of restoring it so me and my family can enjoy it. I may drag it to FW and get some stuff done to it.

      United RV does great work and customer reviews I've read are stellar (we get absolutely $0 for saying that BTW). If you hit something you can't handle, definitely give them a call!

    You have done a lot of really great things. It's really nice. I have to say that I chuckled when you got back to twin beds. and wondered if you had a *work-around* that, like one side pulling out further to make more of a "full bed."
    For me, the fridge was a great part of the reno, but I would have it opening toward the stove and sink.
    Hey, it's AWESOME! GOOD JOB!

    nice trailer! Always wonder why they have 3 axles since they are fairly lightweight! The toolbox doesn't do the streamlined Avionn justice, they're ugly! and so are the batteries! This refurbished Avion deserves Lithium batteries which would double the capacity as well. Never turn the battery switch off while hooked up to shore power! This way the batteries don't get charged and if the power goes out your fridge and lights are not working! And I'm wondering why you didn't reverse the opening on the fridge? this is totally backward! Limo tint does nothing for keeping heat out, it's only about 20% effective! The 2 aluminum Panels you were talking about covering the opening above the fridge and covering the water lines will look out of place next to all that beautiful wood!

    Great video! How much is a fair price for a 1984 Avion in good but not restored shape?

    • @OurGoldRoad
      @OurGoldRoad  Рік тому

      Hmmm... Honestly, that varies widely depending on location (the west coast seems to be the highest priced area, midwest the lowest), condition (outer shell, frame condition, floors, systems and appliance function), etc. Rear bed models are typically more desirable (instead of the rear bath). The length of the trailer also plays into price. For instance the shorter ones (like 19 - 25) are more rare.

      Scroll thru some of the listings to compare, and then post up some pics of the trailer and ask about value.
      Pics (and a systems inspection) will truly help determine value.

    Great tour. I reall need to know--what SIZE of FANTASTIC FAN is required? 14" or 12"? I have the same trailer, need to replace the fan and love his recommendation--but which size did he purchase (I'm measuring 13" on my old one, so it can go one way or the other). Thanks!

    How did you deal with the shocks. I had several shocks come loose and destroy my tires so I want to eliminate the shocks altogether. There is no clearance for a larger shock and the shock system was an afterthought for AVION originally.

    Do people ever take out the interior liner to replace all electrical? Or does everyone just use existing electric and upgrade the panel and utilities?

    • @OurGoldRoad
      @OurGoldRoad  Рік тому +1

      Honestly, I guess that would depend on your trailer condition. (Check out the Avion owners group on fb.)
      It's rare that we've seen other owners remove the interior skins. In fact, I often see those gutted trailers for sale. Pulling the interior skins off is one thing, BUT putting everything back together would be a huge undertaking. Owners try to avoid that if possible. I would advise getting a full systems inspection from a well reviewed RV service company. They could further advise you. Our trailer electric (including panel) was in proper working order, so we just updated outlets and we were good to go.
      Best of luck, and we'd love to hear what you end up doing!

    He said it comes with spray foam from factory?

    • @OurGoldRoad
      @OurGoldRoad  Рік тому

      That is correct. In 1966, Avion began using spray foam insulation. When comparing construction quality, Avions are often considered better built than Airstreams.

  • @scatt8775

    Any idea how much the cost was to get it where it’s at?

    • @OurGoldRoad
      @OurGoldRoad  Рік тому +1

      Honestly, no clue. BUT I'm sure the service department at United RV can get you quotes for any work you need done, and you can decide what is and isn't in your family's budget for your trailer renovation. (And again, we do NOT work for United RV and get zero dollars for sending any work their way. I've just read numerous customers' praise on their service department.)

      The great thing about RVs is that we don't make modifications to suit anyone but ourselves. Having been a RV owner for over 30 years, and working in the RV industry for over 25, 90% of RV fires start with the LP fridge. So we eliminated that all together. I can run my fridge off of the batteries thanks to the inverter when on the road, and we installed an automatic switch for when I plug into shore power. It makes perfect sense to me, and that's really all that matters at the end of the day. Safe travels out there.

    Tongue to short

    • @blacklabeltools2249
      @blacklabeltools2249 Місяць тому

      The tongue is too short because we moved the LP tanks forward a few inches? Since we finished this project I have pulled her all over Texas on countless trips, backed into some really tight spots, and haven't had a problem yet. We didn't shorten the frame of the trailer, it's still the same length as it was from Avion when it was built in 1985. As I said in my previous reply to one of your other comments, I have been around RVs my whole life, and my son is a 4th generation owner. Everything I've done to my RVs over the years has always been well thought out before the modifications were done. I do appreciate your concern. Happy camping & safe travels out there.
