  • One of the simpler cocktails to make, the classic Gin Rickey is similar to a Gin & Tonic. Try it with a new-world gin such instead of a dry London gin for a more refreshing bite.
    What you need:
    Mulholland Distilling gin
    simple syrup
    lime (for juice and garnish)
    soda water
    ice
    Collins glass
    How you do it
    1. Pour 2oz Mulholland Gin into shaker.
    2. Follow that up with ¾oz simple syrup.
    3. Measure out ¾oz fresh lime juice into the shaker as well.
    4. Fill the shaker with ice
    5. Shake shake shake shake
    6. Strain into a collins glass with ice - preferably an ice spear if you've got one laying around in the freezer : )
    7. Top off the glass with soda water.
    8. Garnish with a wedge of lime.
    9. Enjoy!

I've been watching a few videos about making a Gin Rickey, but this one is the best for three (3) reasons: (1) the inclusion of simple syrup gives the cocktail some depth, (2) it's served in the correct glass (a highball glass), and (3) the effort employed by this bartender (Coco Morton). Other Gin Rickey videos show bartenders simply pouring (dumping) the ingredients into the (wrong) glass, but Coco knows enough to construct this cocktail in a cocktail shaker AND THEN add it to a highball glass. Well done, Coco.

If you include simple syrup and shake the ingredients, isn’t this a Tom Collins?

I guess the lime juice instead of lemon juice is the difference?
