    One comment about the K2 piston seal under the flange that needs the 3 rivets drilled out and replaced by 10/32 screws. I have a 1983 380sl (I'm the original owner) with the 722.312 transmission, that was working fine but I had the engine out to be rebuilt so I decided to do the transmission as well. No disrespect intended but I feel like it's a bad idea to simple test the seal for leaks with kerosene. I considered doing what you show in the video, but my gut told me that a 40-year-old seal should be replaced regardless of how difficult it may seem to accomplish at first. The reality is, it wasn't difficult at all and I'm very glad I decided to replace the seal because the seal was a mess. On a more positive note: your video is an essential watch for anyone considering this job. I've watched your video many times start to finish, and it is by far the best video on the topic I have ever seen. Thank you for all your efforts. Ed,

    I just ordered the rebuild kit for my 722.3 that is in My Porsche 928. Just for the sake of it Ill tell you I'm also swapping the torque to with a newly rebuilt one and the torque converter with a 3000 stall converter.. The car is a hot rod/ supercar.with crazy power as well. A NEW or fresh rebuilt trans of this type can take demented levels of power safely.

    So, i just finish to rebuild my 722.5 transmission but I have problem with 1st gear and 3-4 upshift. When oil is cold 1st gear is slipping, 3-4 upshift with flare and when I put in D or 3 or 2 it takes about 3 seconds to engage a gear. In R it engages almost imediatelly and drives fine. Problem is only when driving forward. I dont have idea what goes wrong when rebuilding. Is it valve body problem or clutch/band?

    I do have another question in my mind which is related to correct sequence of the steal plates/ rings and the friction rings.. like from bottom to up.. steal ring/plate then friction ring and close them finally with steal plate. I am talking about K1 & K2. I am just wanna make sure of the sequence.

      probably yes. I think the housings have same mounting holes and dimensions. What's important are the last 3 numbers in the TX code, like 722.3XX. these indicate the specification of the transmission, you need to match or at least be close for the torque requirements.

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel

      My first impression is that this spring is there to dampen the rattling of the plates when the clutch is idle. I dont see any other purpose for it. How critical is this spring? I dont know, I dont have lots of experience with these transmissions

    I am rebuilding a 722.6 for a S55 amg. I'm thinking of removing the cushion plates in order to get firmer shifts also trying to add extra frictions. What do you think?

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  6 років тому

      you know, at first i thought you're crazy...but thinking more about it ...this might work. it would be very interesting to see the result. Im not sure if you gonna have enough space to fit one more pair of friction and reaction plates in there.

    • @AnotherWisenedOne
      @AnotherWisenedOne 5 років тому

      You most likely will not have enough room for another friction and a steel after removing the cushion springs, but for a faster apply rate on the clutches and a firmer shift, find the oil flow holes in the separater plate and open them up a little bit to get a faster oil flow to the pistons. Also, open up all of the holes that the oil will flow through on its way to the pistons and de-burr their edges too. And if you can, jack up the line pressure with a shim or stronger spring. But don't say that I didn't warn you that you may not like the harder shifts after a while!!

    • @sonikempire
      @sonikempire 5 років тому

      @@AnotherWisenedOne I think furthermore, I could machine down the hat of the piston (elevated ridge that the cushion plate sits on).

    • @sonikempire
      @sonikempire 5 років тому

      @@AnotherWisenedOne Thank you! I was waiting for a reply like that! When you say add shim..u mean in the pressure valve lineup? How much are we talking here, like 1mm or more worth of shim?

    • @AnotherWisenedOne
      @AnotherWisenedOne 5 років тому

      Ivan WNY I couldn't tell you how much shim to add right off the top of my head because I have no idea of what the surface area of the pressure relief valve is or how much pressure the spring exerts upon it. So you'll just have to experiment with it to find what you like and can live with.

      Its a bit difficult but doable.
      Just for info, there are 2 bushings, one on the shift tower lever and second on the transmission lever.
      Its a very easy job if you have the correct tool, search www.mercedessource.com for info.
      I managed to change mine without the tool, but it took some time and lots of swearing.
      The one on the shift tower it not too difficult, theres enough room around to get the hands and sone tools in. The one on the transmission is difficult. So support transmission with a jack and remove bolts holding transmission mount to the chassis. Now tou can drop down the transmission a bir and also push it to the side to make more room.
      If you find that its impossible to insert the bushing, you can cut it radialy. Now youll be able to insert bushing into the lever. Its hard to explain in words so if you need more details email me at aiptech1@gmail.com.

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  5 років тому

      Hi, how do you know it shifts into 3 gear?
      First i would check 2 vacuum lines going to the transmission, second check shift delay solenoid, make sure its not stuck in one position.
      If these things are OK, drop and rebuild the valve body, check for broken spring on 2 gear spool

      @@ETHAN-fz8ec well this is not the beginner's job.
      youll have to jack up the vehicle high enough off the ground and make sure that it's safe and secure. Next you have to drop the muffler off the hooks in the back of the car then you're going to have to remove the drive shaft. Then you going to need a really long extensions in order to get to the bolts holding the transmission to the engine. On the C280 engine it is somewhat difficult because the back of the engine is really close to the firewall. you have to drop the back of the transmission (tilt) low enough in order to reach top two bolts and you have to use almost four feet of extensions. You also might need a helper to help with your extensions to engage in the bolts head. for somebody who has a hoist and all the tools it's not such a difficult job, but for a diy mechanic its a JOB

      для начала проверь все ли вакуумные трубки идущие к трансмиссии на месте

      AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel добрый вечер .трубки первым делом проверил а вакуум какимнибуть образом влияет на заднюю скорость? Дело в том что задняя включается с задержкой 2секунды и теперь стала буксовать,то есть включаеш заднюю она трогается через 2секунды а если поддаш оборотов перестает ехать , в чем может быть дело?

      нет...вакуум на включение задчей передачи не влияет, но ты писал что появились пинки при переключении передач, а это от модулятора в который идет вакуумная трубка....это отступление от темы
      по твоему описанию ...это классический случай разрыва сальника/уплотнителя поршня включения задней передачи.

      советую скинуть коробку как можно скорее и поменять 2 сальника на этом поршне, пока не спалил задние фрикционы. Может отделаешься легко, задний поршень в самом начале на крышке насоса и задние фрикционы тут-же доступны для инспекции.
      Сборка смори на 46 минуте.
