Hello Andy. I want to thank you to make a such video with great explanation! I have driving this car since 2009 and faced with this issue several years ago. Servicemans in our country told me that the sensor is not repairable and sensor is expensive in our country. But after watching your video I can understand that everything is possible if you really want to do it. Big thanks from Azerbaijan!!❤

Hey. I have Mercedes Benz C180 1996 1.8l car and my fuel gauge doesnt work. It always shows zero fuel even though its not true. Do you think the problem is in fuel sender? Would appreciate if you can answer!
This video helped me like no other video and I have worked on many things. AndyP you are the man! Also love the "Digital" jacket you started the video in... I worked for that company when I was in College in the 80's PDP 11's and VAX 780's and of course all the peripherals. Again thanks 1998 C280 sport, 2015 E350
Thanks for the video. My W202 fuel gauge has not worked for all of the 3.5 years I've owned this car. The drivers side fuel sender needed to have its spring re-tensioned like on your video, and the passenger side one had been fixed by former owners at one point (the first metal clip you remove from the sender was gone, and the spring had been re-tensioned already). I got the senders repaired like in this video, checked them and they seem to put out the right ohm level now. However I still do not get any fuel level showing in my dash, even when I filled the tank after I did this repair. I was wondering if it could be the instrument cluster that has issues? Oh also occasionally it would jump to full when I had a full tank before, but only when I did hard turns. Does not do this anymore though.
It was tested before I hooked it back up and the resistance was continuously going up and down. I was able to test another instrument cluster which also showed zero, so at this point I'm inclined to believe it's a pinched or corroded wire somewhere.

Hi Im Shake from Malaysia..Im just having my 2nd W202 couple month ago. Earlier C180 since 2006 now C220 4 speed W202..Some restoration could be needed for my 1995 W202..Find very useful video from you tq.
Great video, thanks! Quick question: My 1998 W202 (C230) had really bad gas (dark brown and nasty smelling), so I drained it out of the drain plugs just like you did except I used a Hold fluid extractor. It emptied quick. Then I put 2 gallons in it and ran it for about 15 minutes. Then shut it off. After about 30 minutes I tried starting it and it wouldn't start. So I did some tests and discovered that the fuel isn't leaving the gas tank and feeding the fuel pump. I watched another YT video showing a later model W211 and they show that the plastic hoses crack and break. But they access them from under the seat, and it's way easier than mine. But I don't know if that's causing it or what tests to do to make sure it's bad hoses. Do you have any ideas why that's happening and how to fix it?
first see if the fuel pump is still working, when you turn the ignition on you should hear the pump running. then check if the fuel actually gets to the pump
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Thanks for your quick reply. I had to replace the pump b/c the existing one was totally plugged and corroded (I cut it open). So I checked the supply and return lines and they're clear from front to back. I determined that there is no gas coming out of the tank to feed the fuel pump. So I unscrewed the discharge nut and found it clear, and no debris in the feed-well. So that screen isn't plugged either. At this point I'm beginning to believe something is broken inside the tank. Any ideas what else can be causing no gas to get into the feed-well inside the tank? I read somewhere that the return line flows through a venturi which siphons gas causing it to flow between the tanks and fill that feed-well. If that's true, then how do you go about priming that return line if no fuel is in that feed well to be pumped through it? I don't know enough about this system to know how to troubleshoot it any further. Appreciate any help you can give.

Hello Andy. Brilliant video. I've been trying to drain the fuel tank via the method you described. However, pushing the valve on either sending unit with reasonable force (and a screwdriver) releases only a small dribble of fuel. Disconnecting the hose on the left sending unit released no fuel at all. The car (1993 W202 c180) has been sitting on my front porch for nearly 7 years. It has not been started since then. However, I am still unable to drain this or any petrol. Could I be doing something wrong? Maybe I am not using enough force with the valve? Regards, R.K.W
Hi. The check valve doesn't need a lot of force. There's a much easier way to drain the tank: disconnect the fuel hose after the pump. Pull our fuel relay and jump the contacts. But I'm afraid the fuel has turned into jelly and will cause more damage.
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I will assume that the fuel gel should be removed before adding fresh fuel. Is there an easier way to do this without removing the whole tank?

Hi Andy extremely helpful video thank you. I really need some advice my c36 stopped running and I now think it’s a blocked fuel tank. Tank shows half a tank but reserve light is on . I have tested that I get spark and fires when I put easy start in air box and it fires up. New fuel relay and 12 v to fuel pump - so replaced fuel Pump. When I replaced fuel pump and filter not much fuel came out ! I’d have thought having Hal a tank loads should have come out ? I’d really appreciate any advice on what to do next ? Dave getting desperate 😳
Hi David. you gonna have to get inside the fuel tank. and see the condition of the transfer pump and hose. seems like its a very common problem. the fuel doesn't get transferred from right side to left side of the tank. so fuel level still shows half a tank . but in fact the left side of the tank is empty . and this is whre the intake for the fuel pump is connected
Andy silly question but is the transfer pump in the right or left sender unit ? I have purchased a new left side sender unit . I’ve not got inside yet ordered the groco tool but not arrived yet
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Thanks Andy I hapurchased a new unit for the left and it seems that Mercedes don’t do the right hand side anymore - thanks for your help I will replace and see how I get on I have also got a new filter fingers crossed
You mean the hose inside the tank? It pumps fuel from one side to the side that pulls fuel to the fuel pump. Thete's a ventury pump that this hose is connected to
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Thanks Andy, it wasnt the pump that was the problem, as far as I can see..Car still has a mystery misfire but its much less after timing chain change, and all obvious tweaks.
Thank you for the video. I didn't have a jack or floor jacks that was able to lift my car high enough to fit a 5-gallon jerry can. I also noticed my existing wire connector is round while the sending unit connector on the new one is rectangular....did you have that problem? Did you splice or run a new wiring harness completely?
Oh yeah....I also read online that Mercedes had a recall on their original sending units because of the contacts corroded easily causing a poor electrical connection. Their newer sending unit contacts are supposedly gold-plated to better resist corrosion....how can we tell if the new sending units are the right ones?
One more question...sorry...while you were down there performing sending unit repairs, did you or have every replaced your fuel tank screen? I bought a new one and will replace since I am doing the sending units....
Hey, I‘ve an issue with my C240. The car stops running when half the tank is depleted. That probably means that the Venturi siphon on the left unit is probably broken. It should be enough to change just the left unit, right as the siphon is included in the sending unit or am I wrong?
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel No, the sending units are very reasonably priced at around 50€ on average. The previous owner told me though that he already had the fuel pump and filter changed. So the possibility of a clogged filter resulting in too little pressure in the left unit is out of the question probably yes?
Most likely it's not a filter or pump problem, you can confirm by taking fuel pressure reading at the fuel ramp. From what I've learned mainly it's the transfer hose issue. Not so much the venturi pump itself, but the hose. Until you open the tank you can confirm the problem, you can get the sending unit if u can return it in case you don't need it.

Hi Andy. I have the fuel leak on the right hand side also when I pump fuel it leaks onto the ground. What part of the tank is leaking in your experience? Would it be from the sender unit, or from the anti splash tank part?
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel okay thanks alot. I will give it a go. However my fuel gauge isn't working either so will have to do this fix on the video. Cheers your videos are awesome.
...this one is a very helpful video!👍👍👍 However, question.. if we just need to drain out the fuel tank, can we just loose off those two bolt (using a hex tool), slide in the hose and carefully pushing the hose up to move up the valve (the white valve). Will the fuel come out via the hose? thank u. awaiting your answer soon. Mine is w202 c200.
You could do it much easier without the hose and fitting. Remove the plug and push in a big screwdriver, it will push the ball in the check valve up and will let the fuel out. It might get messy cause youll get fuel everywhere. Using the hose makes it much cleaner

@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Andy does the fuel fill on the right side and the Venturi pump to the left ? Then does the fuel go to the pump from the left saddle bag ? Could this be why my reserve light is on and no fuel even tho it says half a tank ? Could problem be left sender unit ? Dave

Hi, in my W202 200 cdi , approx 8 liters of fuel will stay in the tank and the car won't start. As you mention this is the amount of the reserve fuel. Is this video applies to my case?
Im not 100% sure but I would think that all w202 use same fuel system. On the LH side sending unit there are connections for 2 lines, one suction line to supply fuel to fuel pump and another to pump fuel from RH side to LH side of the tank. It uses the venturi effect to pump the fuel. I think you have a problem with this line, either the line is broken, plugged or something is wrong with venturi pump.

Pump.
Hi Andy thank you for getting back to me I’ll let you know how I get on
Andy silly question but is the transfer pump in the right or left sender unit ? I have purchased a new left side sender unit . I’ve not got inside yet ordered the groco tool but not arrived yet
As I recall it's on the left side.
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
Thanks Andy I hapurchased a new unit for the left and it seems that Mercedes don’t do the right hand side anymore - thanks for your help I will replace and see how I get on I have also got a new filter fingers crossed
Thanks for useful video Andy, do you know what the hoses from left hand unit do and what are they connected to please? Mark
I used existing sending unit, so no problems.
Im not aware of it.
I haven't changed the screen.
Hey, I‘ve an issue with my C240.
The car stops running when half the tank is depleted.
That probably means that the Venturi siphon on the left unit is probably broken.
It should be enough to change just the left unit, right as the siphon is included in the sending unit or am I wrong?
Previous owner changed the fuel pump btw. It should be located on the right side yes?
Left side behind a plastic cover.
People say new sending unit is expensive , so I'd check first...it could be a damaged hose that siphons the gas from rhs tank
Hello Andy. Awesome video. I'm about to take on this repair job myself. I have a few questions and I'm really hoping there's a way I can reach out to you for a little assistance. Thank you in advance
Hi Garren. you can email me aiptech1@gmail.com, if i can answer your questions
I need advice please C300, 2008. My fuel gauge repeated shows empty after 4 attempts at repairing it at Mercedes Benz Service Center for the past 5 months every few weeks. They replaced my fuel pump and sending unit, replaced my fuse box and replaced both my FR sway bar links in April 2023. They gave me a refund of $2,673.42 on September 22, 2023 for the many attempts that did not fix it. The declared it was fixed on September 7, 2023. It shows empty again 9/21/2023. Please HELP???
Hi Im not very familiar with newer MB's. Im just a DIY mechanic, My suggestion, take it back or find an independent mechanic . Sorry that's all i can help you with.
Hi Andy. I have the fuel leak on the right hand side also when I pump fuel it leaks onto the ground. What part of the tank is leaking in your experience? Would it be from the sender unit, or from the anti splash tank part?
Rhs ,it's where the gas tank cap is. I can't tell u exactly where the leak is. Pull the tire off and then the plastic to get to the filler neck.
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel okay thanks alot. I will give it a go. However my fuel gauge isn't working either so will have to do this fix on the video. Cheers your videos are awesome.
...this one is a very helpful video!👍👍👍
However, question.. if we just need to drain out the fuel tank, can we just loose off those two bolt (using a hex tool), slide in the hose and carefully pushing the hose up to move up the valve (the white valve).
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel ..great! thank you. will do it using the hose.
Anyway, what is going to happen if after both part of the tank was empty (LH and RH), i fill the fuel into the tank (around 20litres; probably will only fill up the RH part) ?
will the engine able to start and well running (with the LH part empty) ?
@@geochannel8593
Interesting question... But i didnt have any problem starting the car and it ran fune.
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel i'm sorry, i didnt get it. Did u mean you have no problem starting the engine with only one part of tank empty (LH)?
@@geochannel8593 this is what ive done, ive drained both sides of the tank, replaced seals on both sending units and then put about 10 litre of fuel into the tank. Fired the engine and like i said... No problems. If you watch the video carefully i explained how the fuel gets from RH side to LH side.

Which of the two sending units has a pressure sensor? Any experience with check engine code P0450 on a W202?
I don't remember any pressure sensors on my sending units. I think its on the newer models.

Hai there my Benz is a 202 but it keeps going off when it finishes the bank were the fuel pump is why?
Looks like its only using half of the tank, watch the video carefully i explained how the venturi pump works. It pumps fuel from one side of the tank to another.
Is there a second fuel pump inside the tank?
No, its not a fuel pump. Its a ventury pump to transfer fuel from right tank to left.
@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
Andy does the fuel fill on the right side and the Venturi pump to the left ?
AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel Thank you, I will have a look! Your channel is amazing, keep up the good work!
How did you get on ? I have a similar issue
Thanks Mr for imparting the knowledge .your video it is of great importance and so helpful ki
Hello, I have an interesting question Perhaps you have never seen such a car. :) So on a regular w202 the fuel pump has 2 inlets: one big, one small, both go from the tank to the pump. But in my car, the small fuel tank pipe is cut and blocked. Fuel pump replaced with w210. There is only one big pipe from the tank to the pump. Fixed as w210. What are the consequences of this? I'm interested in your opinion...?
sorry, Not sure

НЕТ это не страшно, обычно замена платы и сброс ошибки решает проблему, если конечно проблема не в механике.

Just a thought why not drive the car till you have very little fuel then do the job so you won't have to deal with so much gas? Other than that your video was very informative
Well.. that would be too easy....
Actually the car wasn't insured..
Ok cool, one more question can you use the existing pump to get the fuel into your container by connecting a hose or does it not get enough out of the tank?
why did you not take camra under the car
