Steve, I just wanted to say thank you one more time. Just yesterday, my oldest son was telling me how frustrated he is with his newly acquired used lawnmower. It's a Briggs engine, and it hasn't run correctly since right after he got it. So, I pulled the top yesterday afternoon and first thing I saw was the coil contacts were 100% corroded. So were the contact points on the flywheel. I cleaned them off, checked the spark plug and got a good hot spark. The engine would not start at all. We found that it was missing the vacuum tube and replaced it. Still wouldn't start. We, then, pulled the carb. square style and cleaned it. I was super-duper two beer careful in handling the needle jet and put it back together. Pumped the primer bulb, pulled the cord twice, and voilà! For about 20 seconds... Gas started pouring out of the carb and primer bulb. I had forgotten to double-check the seat. I racked my brain, trying to figure out what I was missing. I pulled the carb back down and double-checked the needle jet and checked the ports and blew the ports again as a precaution. I would bet money, I blew out the seat and didn't even realize it. THANK YOU! I now know where to look and what to do once again thanks to you Steve... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
Going to try and fix carb on B & S Power Washer. I hate doing stuff like this but tired of paying $60 just for someone to look at it. Thank you for the easy to follow video. Very well done.
Steve, INVISIBLE HUGGIES...WOW. I am 72, female and always excellent with tools. My lawnmowers have never ever leaked gas into the air filter...until now. Your video is absolutely excellent. My problem was not how to repair...but finding the correct Briggs and Stratton carburetor parts.
watching Steve is like going to small engine school for free, been watching Steve fore awhile now ,now i don't only fix my small engines i fix family and friends small engine and i get lots of free beer doing the summer months i might add. Thanks Steve for the free schooling!!
My Briggs is leaking fuel I just ordered another carburetor. I’m praying it fixes the problem but seeing your video here sir smh. I’m a subscriber now. You’re a genius. Thank you sir.
God bless you friend! I trusted my memory, but reversed the needle and bulb valves and the carburetor leaked, but after watching your video close ups, I finally got the lawn mower working again. Good as new!
Steve, you are the man. I watched a bunch of other UA-cam clips before I found this one that exactly described the problem I had with gas freely flowing out of the carburetor on my Honda HR21 lawnmower that has a carb very similar like the one you showed here. Removing the bowl, float and needle and cleaning them up fixed the problem. The only thing I would add is that I did not have to remove the entire carburetor. I dropped the bowl, float and needle off while the carb was still attached. If needed, you can lean the mower on its side to help see what is going on. After cleaning and putting the parts back on, the mower fired right up and no more gas leak. The whole fix from start to finish took less than thirty minutes. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, I fixed my carb! Problem in mine was that it was sitting there with no gas for 2 years. Some of the gum actually dried up and got between the needle and the rubber seal. Overhauled the carb with totally cleanup And did the leak test as you showed while the carb was still out. Perfect, no more gas leak. And powered up on first pull!!! 😁😎👍👍👍
Great video. By installing the new needle and seat, it fixed my problem. Also, changed the air filter gasket and O-rings on carb. Sprayed the carburator with carb cleaner. To insert the rubber seat, I used a wooden dowel of the same diameter. Thanks again. Beer = Landshark My leaky carb is now fixed. My next problem is, every time I tilt my beer bottle it leaks. I may require another video. Cheers.
Appreciate the video. I replaced the needle and seat on my cyclone lawn vacuum and it worked like a charm. No more leaky carburetor. I wouldn't have had a clue what to do without your video.
My MTD riding lawn mower was flooding with gas. I now know how I could've fixed it. But what I did, was to buy a replacement carburetor for $21 plus $6 shipping, and w/ a new universal gas filter, I got my mower going again. Better than ever. Easy starting now!
Your videos are the best and very informative. Your video helped with leaking gas from carburetor, replaced needle and seat on carburetor for a Briggs and Stratton engine although float seemed not perfectly level it fixed leak. Lawnmower start fine after priming. I still have an issue were I have to prime every time I start it even if it's running for a while.
Thanks for helping me get my carburetor fixed. It was leaking when stopped and running lean while running causing it to run hot and die after a while. I replaced the seat and needle and it runs like a champ. I did have to push the seat harder than I thought to get the float to sit level so it took me a couple of tries.
Big thanks for this. Been screwing around with this carb a few days cleaning the piss out of it and it kept leaking. Watching this looks like the tip broke off the needle. Finally got the help I needed.
I know these videos are more for the homeowner but I have a tool made by tecumseh to install and remove seats. 20 dollars on eBay. They work like a charm. They don't work on some briggs carbs for installing because some of the briggs use smaller seats but it will remove them. It has almost like a small crochet hook on the end. Great tool. Again I know this is more for a home owner that doesn't have a need to buy these tools but they are worth it for a mechanic. I also like to put a little oil around the seat when sliding them in. I find on some of the stubborn ones where the aluminum carb body has swollen over the years it helps it like right in. Then a little carb clean washes the oil off
Had a B&S, 15.5 h.p. on my tractor. Was doing the same thing. Only difference was the seat was a metal cup and the needle had a rubber tip. Had to use a screw to pull out the seat, but you're right, a cheap and easy fix.
Usually I do maintenance at work where we have big vices and all of the tools handy to the benches in the sheds. Today I was able to have a cold beer at my own home while I replaced the blades on my Briggs and Stratton. By chance and good fortune I had a TWO SUNS carton delivered last week. Two Suns is an Australian beer made here in Queensland and I will share the fact that I found it so tasty that I am having another right now. Cheers, Steve.
Great video Steve. Still very relevant. I have a beat to shi- Toro Lawn Mower with a Briggs and Stratton motor that has run like a champ since 2009. Well...I got seriously injured and the mower sat idle for three seasons until today. I rolled it out, gassed it up and it started on second pull ! went to top it off and gas was leaking out of the filter just like you described. I let it dry off and did a partial disassembly. blew in compressed air and carb cleaner... the float must have been frozen and it loosened up. works fine now. The mower is literally falling apart around the motor. When the mower dies I will remove the motor for when I have to run a washing machine when the world ends. Your video helped confirm what was wrong. These motors are indestructible! BTW... save those empty toggle top beers for when you home brew beer... always repurpose old materials!
Thanks Steve for sharing your knowledge. It took me two rounds. Round 1 was a fail so I went back through the steps and realized I forgot the most important step. Round two I crack a Mickey's big mouth everything went smoothly and was more enjoyable, success. If you follow the steps exactly
Since I discovered your videos, I hardly have to visit the small engine repair shop anymore, except to buy parts. I just hope he doesn't go bankrupt because of your videos.
Thanks so much Steve! I now know what’s happening and how to fix it, I’ve watched your carb rebuild and brought a 30 year old chipper back to life! Time to replace the seat and needle, thanks again.
This fixed my problem. Drained the fuel out of the tank and carburetor before I stored it and when I pulled it out this spring filled it with fuel and it was non stop leaking. Took the bowl off and removed the float to inspect the needle and seat it all look fine. But it back together and it stopped the leak. I guess the float was just stuck in the down position. Thanks again for the video.
Thank you so much for a great video and I did exactly what you said and fixed my lawnmower! I have an older Murray lawnmower that was leaking gas and I hate to throw things away and would rather fix them. I would give you a hundred thumbs up if I could.
Great description Steve! My Toro 675 is flooding bad from the carb. Took it apart 3 times, float off, valve out but no luck, still leaking bad. Got to get on ebay right away for the new bits, looks like it's a simple repair. Thanks Steve.
I just do a month blow test on the carb shut off, flip it over upside to shut down / flip back over and air should come out. If the O-ring gasket from the bowl is stretched, it could develop a leak! About a one beer job!. Just a Miller-Lite works for me. Nice to have a 36 pack of ML in case I run into trouble...I keep my 36 pack, next to my 740 pack of hand sanitizer now! great video Steve-O!
Steve, you're a bad ass when it comes to small engine mechanic. I tip my hat and salute to you. I've learned a lot from you by watching you on you tube beside learning drinking a good ol brewski :)
Appreciate the assistance on the problem. Ordered the part from Amazon; should have tomorrow. My favorite beer to drink while in my shed repairing lawnmower is Shiner Bock.
Your videos are really informative. About that brass float, though... To save even more money, that can be fixed really easily with a cup of boiling water, a can of freeze spray, a soldering gun and a roll of solder. Using the soldering gun, remove the solder from the vent hole in the float. Once that's done, hold the float under the boiling water with the vent hole at the bottom. The boiling water will force the fuel out of the float. You will see the fuel bubbling out. You may need to hit the float with freeze spray in between dunks in the water bath to lower it's temperature back down below the boiling water if you need to dunk it multiple times to remove all the fuel. Once no more fuel is escaping, reflow solder back into the vent hole. Dunk it again in the boiling water to be sure no more air bubbles are seen. If you see air escaping from the float, be sure to seal those holes as well. This works great for fixing these floats so long as you don't over do it. Too much solder and the float won't float. But for one or two small pin holes... this has saved many a dollar.
Steve, there's another viewer down there who is a Root Beer fan for the same reason I am. BUT when I replace a needle and seat and discover the brass float is leaking I do replace it with the plastic one. I also add vanilla ice cream so I can have a Root Beer Float.
Great video Steve, another quick and easy way to remove the seat in a Briggs or Tecumseh carb is to screw a wood screw into the hole in the seat and pop it out.
Have a carb off of a Briggs on a Scott's mower. Cleaned it, replaced the needle and seat and still leaks out of the filter side. Took it back off, checked to make sure nothing is stuck in the needle or seat. All good. Back together, test, still leaks. Blew the new seat out, checked it, put it back in, felt it seat in place. Sill leaks. About to toss the carb. It does have the proper needle, I tried the old needle, yep, still leaks.
You're a Master Demonstrator, Steve. From someone who got blue ribbons for 4-H demonstrations at our county fair! And yeah, Grolsch is always a good choice.
Last summer was the first time I’ve ever seen a plastic float leak, it was on a newer Toro with a Loncin engine. Hey, it got me a 2 year old Toro for $25 and it was an easy fix so no complaints! Harp Lager for me, and plenty of it!!
My dad has a Craftsman tractor he was cleaning the carb on. He was using the air compressor to blow out the carb. I bet it's the seat he saw come out and couldn't find it. The tractor never ran again been 2 years now since it ran. I just bought him a carb for it off of Amazon for $14. Not sure if it will work but dad isn't too worried about it. It is 28 years old, has a bent frame in front, no brakes and burns a little oil. Figured if he wants to sell it he can get a little more with it running. He pulled the carb off cause it wasn't running right.
Great video among all the other great videos you've made. Thank you for taking the mystery out of the operation of carburetors and many other small engine related equipment. I've learned a lot. I don't drink beer when I'm working on my equipment. I might forget something - or lose my sight!
Once you drink Beck's you'll never go back I learned that sinking carburetor trick many years ago working on outboard motors the solder joint breaks and leaks couldn't figure it out for a while but just accidentally shook it and heard the liquid inside problem solved. Steve one thousand thanks I saw your video about fixing a blower that would not rev up I have a Husqvarna blower that was almost new that was doing the exact same thing drove me nuts for a while but your video solve the problem thanks again
Great explanation and camera work! I ordered the part from the description - very helpful. I’m drinking a Founder’s IPA while watching this video. Kudos to all who are drinking root beer or water! I’ve cut back from two-four beers down to one.
I'm drinking a Carlton dry and my first time figuring out why soke is blowing out of my 4 stroke mower... I'm a single Mum and don't mind getting my hands dirty lol but enjoying your clips to help me fix it... 🍻
Good job Steve, very understanding and straight forward. I like to clean my carbs with mineral spirits to get the bug crud off nd out , then I heat a pan of water with a little Pinesol to cut the varnish , wiggle it around in that hot! Solution for awhile and the carb comes out clean, I put everything in there except plastic.. cleans up good. Regarding beer, my brother and I used to like miller gd, now I like Wisconsin amber or "Capital Amber" as it is called, I think it is better than Alaskan Amber. Thanks bud, keep up the good works and stay cool. God bless everyone. 'Nosdrovia' good health.
Great video. Would likely never have found the problem. I probably caused the problem myself. As I cleaned the carburetor I blew air through every orifice I could find and likely blew the seal out without knowing it. Thanks.
Hey my Brother, agree with everything you said. Just wondered if you noticed when you showed the seat before you removed it , it was installed upside down. Been doing this for along time. Just hit me real quick. Enjoy your channel , and keep the videos coming.
The best kind of beer for any job is.... COLD BEER... carburetor repair is my favorite on 2 and 4 stroke. Love working on carburetors on just about anything.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Thank you. I cleaned the carburetor outx but missed the step about the needle and float. My float I know was not sitting flat. Hopefully, I didn't mess anything up. That might explain the gas flooding and leaking in my garage and emptying my gas tank dry. :-(
I like the tips you gave us on how to fix the problem with the carburetor leaking gas. I gave a cheap lawnmower to a friend in my neighborhood because she didn't have working mower and I didn't need the mower I had and didn't get around to replacing the rubber bulb which was leaking the fuel. I had other mowers and only used that one for a short time before the bulb began leaking fuel and I stopped the mower and put it up after that. I told her what the problem was and told her how her grown sons could fix the problem and where to get the parts. No one worked on that mower and it sat around her house for a long time and then finally one of them took the mower to their house and never brought it back to her. That left me upset and if I had given her a mower which was working perfectly they would have done the same thing.
BTW Steve, the saw you have hanging on the wall behind you is cool...have one very similar; remember my Dad picking it up in Tennessee while visiting relatives and driving back home to Texas; obviously it would not fit inside the car with family or the trunk, so he tied it to the bottom of our 1956 Chevrolet chassis with bailing wire...its hanging in my shed.
Steve I'm going to have to disagree on the plastic float thing. I've had two lawn boys with I believe walbrocarburetors with plastic floats. Each one of them we're needing replaced because they have leaked feel inside. I have always had better luck with the brass floats. Sometimes they get fuel in them, sometimes they cave in, but nothing an air compressor and a little solder can't fix. I enjoyed the video though. much appreciated for the hard work and dedication for us.
I’ve rebuilt six or seven mowers, push & riding…never had this issue! I’m going to start drinking, as I take it apart, 3rd time. The place I got the parts, (authorized Briggs & Stratton), wrong! I gave them the model & part numbers…. It’s a live & learn….Amazon! Wasted filter & parts…just an fyi…checked the part #’s after, S*** hit the fan! My bad…”Due Diligence”. Check you part #’s before install. Good videos🍻👍

I think all instructional videos makers should take a cue from you. it was very clear and concise. I liked the tight camera shots.
Awesome, thank you!
Gas was leaking from the prime bulb. I was wondering why I was running out of gas the next time I used my lawnmower 😩Thanks for the information 🤙🏼
Thanks for helping me get my carburetor fixed. It was leaking when stopped and running lean while running causing it to run hot and die after a while. If you see air escaping from the float, be sure to seal those holes as well. This works great for fixing these floats so long as you don't over do it. Too much solder and the float won't float. But for one or two small pin holes... this has saved many a dollar.
My mower works fine but I'm gonna subscribe cause this guy is such a good teacher!
Thank You...
Thanks to you I repair all of my gas tools . I would like to say that out there are many lake me wishing you the best
Thanks, you too!
Great video. Thanks for showing the proper orientation of the rubber seat.
No problem 👍
Right on Chuck! Thank You...
Excellent!! I bet its the float and seat thats making the carb leak gas out the carb on my rider! Thanks for very well detail!!
You're Welcome...
Last summer was the first time I’ve ever seen a plastic float leak, it was on a newer Toro with a Loncin engine. Hey, it got me a 2 year old Toro for $25 and it was an easy fix so no complaints! Harp Lager for me, and plenty of it!!
Right on
My dad has a Craftsman tractor he was cleaning the carb on.
I like the tool description and all the little details and tricks you show us, thanks Steve.
Very welcome
What an AMAZING explanation, you earned a subscriber out of me. I want to see what else I can learn from you. Thanks
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Very useful and great instructions. Thanks! I have two that leak and didn’t know that was so easy to repair
Glad it helped
Great video among all the other great videos you've made. Thank you for taking the mystery out of the operation of carburetors and many other small engine related equipment. I've learned a lot. I don't drink beer when I'm working on my equipment. I might forget something - or lose my sight!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
San Miguel .... It's a pale pilsen lager from the Philippines! Soooooooooo good!
26 people have flooded engines. Seriously tho, why the hell would you possibly dislike this video?
Why talk about beers just get on with the solution!
Right on Mike...
Great explanation and camera work! I ordered the part from the description - very helpful. I’m drinking a Founder’s IPA while watching this video. Kudos to all who are drinking root beer or water! I’ve cut back from two-four beers down to one.
Awesome, thank you!
Mmm Founders!
I'm drinking a Carlton dry and my first time figuring out why soke is blowing out of my 4 stroke mower... I'm a single Mum and don't mind getting my hands dirty lol but enjoying your clips to help me fix it... 🍻
Boom! Great information throughout. Great instruction and camera work. Thank you, sir.
You're Welcome...
Outstanding video. Thank you for this. Very thorough.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Steve. Informative and helpful.
Thank You...
Thanks.
Glad it helped
Sorry bro and I will thank him and you each time I use that. Thank you to you both!
Hey my Brother, agree with everything you said. Just wondered if you noticed when you showed the seat before you removed it , it was installed upside down. Been doing this for along time. Just hit me real quick. Enjoy your channel , and keep the videos coming.
The way you explained it make me fix my law mover s and save money thanks
You're Welcome...
Well done Steve!! Never attempt a small engine fix without a cold one.
Exactly!
Cold!! beer is my Favorite while working on samll engines😁
Priceless video. Thank You. Going out to remove my carb!! Saving this !! :)
Good luck!
It usually takes me a quart pint and another small bottle to replace a float in a carburetor. Good video Steve keep up the good work
Thanks 👍
knowledge is power, thanks for this process.
My pleasure
The best kind of beer for any job is.... COLD BEER... carburetor repair is my favorite on 2 and 4 stroke. Love working on carburetors on just about anything.
Right on
Thank you sir. I plan to take everything apart 1 more time tonight.
Best of luck!
Steve, thank you for your informative video...great job!
My pleasure!
Your awesome at teaching that's the first time I had to watch a video one time
Wow, thanks!
Very clear video. Thanks a lot for your detailed work! Saved me some time
You're welcome!
Thanks, I was installing the float upside down, your videos are awesome 👌 thanks!
You're Welcome...
I'm usually a Rainier man, myself! I actually have a mower that will benefit from this exact repair.
Right on
I like him he is really down to earth. He does good job, then he has beer like normal guys do.
Right on Mario! Thank You...
A fine self tapping screw will usually grab those rubber seals to remove easily when they are stuck.
Or a mechanics pik
BTW Steve, the saw you have hanging on the wall behind you is cool...have one very similar; remember my Dad picking it up in Tennessee while visiting relatives and driving back home to Texas; obviously it would not fit inside the car with family or the trunk, so he tied it to the bottom of our 1956 Chevrolet chassis with bailing wire...its hanging in my shed.
Very cool!
Great video - ironically, I've got a plastic float thats split! Same carbie!
Hi Steve. I sure would enjoy a shop tour so we could see what you are looking at when you're showing us these great tips. Please?
Steve I'm going to have to disagree on the plastic float thing. I've had two lawn boys with I believe walbrocarburetors with plastic floats. Each one of them we're needing replaced because they have leaked feel inside. I have always had better luck with the brass floats. Sometimes they get fuel in them, sometimes they cave in, but nothing an air compressor and a little solder can't fix. I enjoyed the video though. much appreciated for the hard work and dedication for us.
That is my exact problem! Thank you!
Happy to help!
Level float is true for a solid needle. For spring top type needles gravity can affect the float position.
Yuengling would be my choice of beer and I do have a leaky carburetor on my edger so thank you for sharing keep the cameras rolling from Florida.🏖🏖
Right on
Absolutely the BEST useful information ever! Very detailed! Thank you very much!!! 😉🤗
You are so welcome!
Darn gaskets. A lawnmower repair man and petroleum proof gasket maker would be best friends
Thanks for the video Steve! I wish you were my dad and you could have taught me all this cool guy stuff!
You're Welcome...
What a compliment!👍
I’ve rebuilt six or seven mowers, push & riding…never had this issue! I’m going to start drinking, as I take it apart, 3rd time. The place I got the parts, (authorized Briggs & Stratton), wrong! I gave them the model & part numbers…. It’s a live & learn….Amazon! Wasted filter & parts…just an fyi…checked the part #’s after, S*** hit the fan! My bad…”Due Diligence”. Check you part #’s before install. Good videos🍻👍
Great video and explanation. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge, and for motivating me to get some Grolsch -- haven't had any in over 30 years.
Right on James...
