  • The old rusty screwdriver is quickly dismantled, because with the multifunction tool only two bolts need to be ground and knocked out. In this project, the focus is on machining with files and sandpaper (different grits).
Please also note that this video is not only to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and unwind from everyday life!
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ What did I do ?! ◀
The antique screwdriver was not in very bad condition, which made this restoration very easy. After I dismantled the wooden handle with the help of a multifunction tool, the screwdriver was soaked in rust remover for a day. Then it was brought back into shape with files and sandpaper. The tip of the screwdriver was hardened. Finally, the antique screwdriver was polished on the polishing stand, my favorite task ;). The new handle is made of beech wood and was fitted exactly. With two bolts made of brass, which I made on the lathe, the handle was connected to the screwdriver.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Multifunctional tool, pin punch, hammer, rust remover, files, sandpaper (different grit), cordless screwdriver, drill, pen, belt sander, linseed oil varnish, soldering torch, oil, polishing stand, polishing paste, lathe, brass, lathe chisel, saw

Beautiful both ways. I love the old for its patina and it’s character. And I love the new for its restored life and beauty.

Couple of thoughts: Firstly I know many will disagree with me when I say that as a huge fan of Evap-o-rust solution to soak rusty tools and parts in, I wish I saw it used more often than sandblasters or electrolysis. I love that good ol' fashioned rust removing solution!
Secondly, I love these old wooden handled tools! The question people should ask is not "Why did they use wooden handles for tools?" so much as "WHY did they stop!?".
    Thanks for a perfect restoration!!

Thanks for your great feedback!🐢 It also always depends on how much an object is rusted, objects in rust remover I usually do only with weakly rusted things. The rust remover works very well too though.... 🤩Nowadays no one makes the effort to make a wooden handle, dipping in plastic is much faster and better with a machine ...😔🐢

    • @autumn5592
      @autumn5592 Рік тому +1

      Price is why they stopped.
Easier and cheaper to form fiberglass (hammer handles and the sort), or use a tube dipped in rubber.
Now, a steel tube is more durable, but god does it feel awful.
I love my wooden handle tools, and make my own whenever I can.

I appreciate the rehabilitation of a still-useful tool. However, I was a disturbed by the waste of the linseed oil--a teaspoon would have been sufficient. A philosophical disconnect there...

Wonderful audio as always, very nice video. It's nice to see something simple sometimes like this, and enjoy watching the pieces come together. The wood matching into the grooves was extra satisfying.
Also, the kids approve, as always, of more turtle brush. ^_^

I agree somewhat with what your saying that casting/forging of certain tool's tangs have a raised/thickened edge in certain locations.
Even some with specific hammer striking areas like chisels. However, IMHO, at about the 14 second mark with the view of the end of the screwdriver handle while in the vise it appears to be a burred areas from hammering and the wood portion is flattened as well. It's more prominent on the one side and it has small splits/cracking on the edge of the more prominent burr which can be seen even better just before he files it later in the video.
You can still see after filing the thicker areas of the tang's casting/forging toward it's edges and end.

Sehr gute Arbeit.

Quick question. Would a spokeshave or plane be a better tool for rounding off the handle? Using a rasp seems to be a longer process and more of an issue regarding the really fine sawdust that gets everywhere even after you vacuum and sweep

It sure looks like an Irwin screwdriver.
If it is it would have Irwin stamped on the shaft.
Irwin made reproductions of their iconic screwdriver. It came in two sizes.
And no, they did not have special hardened seasoned tips.
The entire shaft went into the furnace in batches of hundreds.
The furnace was a big revolving cage that would revolve about 1 RPM over gas flames.
When all the screwdrivers or whatever glowed red they would dump them into a big steel basket on a crane. Then quickly swung over to a vat of oil and lowered quickly into the oil. If they lowered it slowly, or if the pieces were white hot it would set the surface of the oil on fire.
If it was bad it would set the roof on fire. The fire department was called to put out the roof.
The heat treat department seldom had a roof. Because every time they’d fix it they’d set it on fire again. They liked it better without a roof because it got so hot in there.
I worked there before Irwin sold out to Stanley and left town.
