This is the best video I've seen about bentgrass, and I've done a fair bit of research to figure out how to address my bentgrass invasion. Your guidance is so clear. So glad I can stop researching and use this as my guide. You've done a great service to humanity with this guide!
I agree with everyone else. I just stumbled across this video today and subscribed to your channel. My lawn is an absolute mess with bent grass because it used to be an old golf course. The lawn guy we hired to do our fertilizing is really dropping the ball, even when I ask for help. Now I don't need his help, going to start tackling this next fall and will prep for it until then. Thanks!
Thanks for this awesome video! Unfortunately for me I have a ton of bent grass and a big yard. I was hoping you had some super secret switch or something we could use and be done...lol Thanks again man. I really love the way you did this video.
Here is a link to the TENACITY Herbicide and SURFACTANT Bundle. amzn.to/3x5MZKs The LAZER BLUE can be purchased here separately! 👍 18 MONTH UPDATE ON BENTGRASS REMOVAL: The HUGE patches of bent grass that were ripped out had a few small patches return! This was to be expected after ripping out such large areas. Any small spots that were ripped out are still gone.
My bent grass problem was much worse than I thought. When I used Tenacity it turned out half my lawn was bent grass and killed half, it looked horrible. I wasn't going to hand rake that mess so I bought a scarifier/power rake and used that to get the dead stuff up. I used the power rake the first pass to get the majority of the dead stuff up then the scarifier. The scarifier dug down into the dirt about 1/4" making it ideal to thrown down some good quality seed and cover with peat moss. It look great now.
Great video! Reminded me of my own Bentgrass beat down from earlier in the Fall. My front yard was completely overRUN with the stuff and the old grass was trash (K31 and clumping fescue). I went the full renovation route. 2 apps of tenacity then Glyphosate the rest. I went with a KBG / PRG mix, I was really happy with the end result. I also got many many weird looks and comments from the neighbors and their tune changed quickly when they saw the results, LOL.I look forward to seeing your lawn leveling vid in the Spring. I’m now part of the Tribe. Keep up the good work! Jay from NJ
Hey Jmice! Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad someone shared my pain with this project lol! It’s a lot of work for sure but gave some amazing results! I’m sure your lawn looks great as well! I’m looking forward to leveling this thing more than ever! Thanks for being part of the tribe Jay! 👍
Your efforts paid off nicely JB. I hope your neighbors didn’t have many sleepless nights worrying about your lawn. I hope they would be just as worried about you if you were not feeling well.
Thanks a lot Danny! My neighbors know that if they don’t see me out in the garage or the yard daily then something’s wrong lol. I’m always out there. Can’t wait for spring to how she looks with stripes! 👍thanks for being a cool fan Danny!
I just have been diagnosed and I am so glad after watching your video that I have a small lawn. I know I am going to be getting those looks but I have to do it. I have doo good of an established law(same mix as yours) to kill it off.
Best video I have seen on the subject. Just finished my second spraying of tenacity on the creeping bent grass. Now I’ll wait and do it like you did. Wish me luck. Thx for the video. 🙂
Thank you for the video, I have a few areas of bentgrass, so now what it is and how to deal with it. BTW, I highly suggest that you rake the mulch away from all your trees and expose the root crowns. This will improve their growth; there are several videos that discuss the importance of this.
JB, this was the video I’ve been waiting for! I feel your pain brother as I did the same to my front lawn late summer. I didn’t have as much bentgrass as you but mine was a ton of 6” to 24” spots spread across a little bit larger area. Did exactly the sane steps as you (great minds right?) except I did add a dusting of topsoil to each spot before and after seeding. Doing that and covering with peat moss for so many little spot was SO time consuming. Grass came in well and by now it all looks consistent. I didn’t have time to do a few spots in the backyard so will need to hit them next year. My concern now is if I got it all in the front and will it come back next spring. Unfortunately, all my neighbors have it in their lawn and they care not to control it. Let me know if you have any return next year and I’ll do the same. Thanks for this video and Happy Thanksgiving to you and GarageGal! Dave
Hey DAVE!!! Great minds do think alike! I have quite a few friends that were eagerly waiting for this video! The lawn has been looking great and I’m not seeing that bentgrass anywhere where I killed it off. It was a lot of work but if any does return it will be small/quick kill offs at this point. Nothing like this last job. I could spot spray it with a hand can at this point. I will keep you posted if any comes back next spring but I am confident I got it. I’m also wondering when I level the lawn in the spring will any that does pop up get buried? I’m excited to level this thing! It’ll be a fun project! Stay Awesome my friend! 👍 Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Amazing video, my lawn is a mess and after posting in a few places realized I have a creeping bent issue - thought I had to nuke the thing but I'm loving your approach, going to go for it now!
Again, your videos are so great! You make it feel like its so easy and inspires me to try it out myself, even though I'm a beginner.. or even pre beginner, but I get the feeling that I might be able to do something to our lawn. Your videos, your energy, your editing with video content and music is just really awesome! ❤
Thank you SO much!! For the past three years my back yard has been a horror movie - "The Grass That Refused to Be Mowed". Not knowing what I was dealing with, I would try to rake up the grass as I was mowing - a futile effort at best, and probably helped spread it at worst. Your solution does not look fun, but it is a clear plan and appears to be effective. You very may well have saved my sanity!
It’s a lot of work getting rid of it. It’s no fun, but the lawn looks great when it’s done. I would recommend doing it end of August/early Sept. Thanks for following along!
I am so glad i came across this video. You did such a great job explaining everything. I ordered everything through Amazon based on your recommendation. I hope my lawn has the same success. Unfortunately my infected area is much larger.
Great video! My landscaper was saying I'd have to spray roundup and replace the topsoil. A lot more work and cost, and I still wouldn't get it all. This was a huge help. Time to get to work!
@@GarageGear Oh yeah I just ripped everything up! The roots weren’t too bad because they’re so shallow, definitely a lot of patience though. I didn’t notice it too much until I cut it short and saw the exposed fungus in many spots.
My bent grass was so dominant I decided to make it permanent. Live on Long Island NY. watched some videos now I have the nicest lawn on the block. People ask if it is real. The key is cutting at one inch and fertilizing correctly It is a weed and is really tuff . Definitely worth it.
You have the same grass as I do, and I live in the desert lol. I have wild Bermuda that blows in (maybe the same as bentgrass?) and I dig it out about half a foot deep, sprinkle Weed 'n' Feed and fill it in with the good stuff.. viola! Your videos are awesome... Have a great Thanksgiving!
Paul, I though if you owned an Old Toro Proline you never had to do any work ever on your lawn again… lol 😂 Sounds like you have a great attack plan as well. Bermuda is definitely an alpha grass. You ROCK my friend! Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and your toro family! 👍
I had a bunch on neighbors asking wtf I was doing when I was dethatching last year. I went aggressive so it looked like hell but they were all amazed when the new seed started dominating.
Hahaha I know the feeling Joshua! I had so many looks with all the bare spots in my lawn! Many of the neighbors didn’t understand it lol! But now you’re on top! Thanks for watching and sharing!
This video was great! I noticed an unusual green patch that migrated from my neighbor’s terrible yard (along with ants and moles) and I had no idea what it was until it was too late. Now it’s everywhere in my yard and I absolutely hate it. I will be giving this a shot next season when I have more of a window to tackle it. In the meantime I’m using herbicide spray that says it tackles bent grass. We will see!
Hey JB - I didn’t even know what creeping bentgrass was before today but that’s definitely what’s invading my backyard lawn. Appreciate the informative video. Time to get to work on removing it!
Thanks a lot for the positive feedback Alex. I shot something like 400-500 clips for this video. Needless to say my camera/ computer didn’t like me very much especially toward the end. Way too many video files. Lol I appreciate your positive feedback. This was a fun project and my lawn is seriously green right now even as winter is about drop on use. Super happy with the results and we’ll worth the time! Thanks for being an awesome fan Alex!👍
Holy moly!!! I dread doing this. It is really taking over my yard too. And we have gotten hundreds of compliments on our grass. But now we have a bunch of bent in it. And you're right if you kill a circle, then it's all on the parameter of the circle. Great video!
Totally worth it. I nuked mine last year w/ Tenacity…looked awful for several weeks. Ran out of time and never raked it out or overseaded. Looks real good this year but i am seeing small spots i missed. 3/4acre was too munch to do at one time. This year should be easier and hopefully wont need to do again for many years. Its infested my next door neighbors so we’ll see…. From Rochester NY
@@GarageGear it did look pretty thin before spring popped. Surprisingly, Everything looks great/full by late spring and now into summer. I am planning to hit it again soon…but hesitant cause it looks great overall but i know it’ll get worse next year if i dont.
FYI @3:54 you said "point zero 5" (0.05) tsp. then said 2tsp for 4gal. So the correction should be "used zero point five" (0.5tsp) /1000/gal". thanks for the vid!
Im on 4 acres out in the country. I've noticed bentgrass in large patches. How in the heck did I ever even get this crappy grass in my lawn to begin with? By the way...THUMBS UP!!!
Hey JB, I am planning to start this project in the next week or two. My questions are mainly around the first 4 weeks with the Tenacity applications. 1. Did you mow lower than normal/differently prior to the first Tenacity application? 2. Did you mow during this four week period of Tenacity applications? 3. Did you do any watering of the yard during this time? Thanks man! I'm looking forward to starting this up and hope the results are like yours!
@@danbean5 hey Dan! I just mowed as normal about 1-2 times per week but gave about 3 days after application before mowing. I mowed at my normal height. 2.5 inches. We were getting some rain at that point so I wasn’t watering. Good luck with your lawn project! 👍
@@angelomiranda331 I got it on Amazon! Are there certain chemical restrictions in your area? You may have to go to a landscape supply store to get it possibly or shop on another site
Great video now a subscriber I have this painful bent grass thankfully is early days so will attack with your method. If it spread too much I would cry I have 1.5 acres of grass so killing it all would hurt.
Quick tip use the Scott’s Triple Action starter fertilizer early in the spring it has mesotrione (sp?) in it which is tenacity but in granular form. It will light up the bentgrass and then you can spray with liquid tenacity to get rid of it
Respect for anyone pulling that much bentgrass out with a thatch rake. I’ve done it, brutal. I’ve got a power rake at the new place. I’m getting too old.
I am actually thinking bent grass might be better as might not require as much mowing. And seen more resilient than the other common used grass type. Similar to zoisia en my view based on the running stems that self heal more disease resistance. My thoughts 💭
Great video! I just sprayed my lawn with tenacity approx 5 days ago and the bentgrass is already turning white… was planning on power raking it up then overseeding with compost (via the lanzie) but wasn’t sure if I should hit it with a second dose of tenacity ( therefore prolonging the compost/overseed another couple weeks
Agreed, great video! Central NY here with bentgrass creeping from neighbor's yard and a couple questions: 1. Did I see your infestation creeping over into your neighbor's yard and you sprayed that as well? I read somewhere that Tenacity can spread to unsprayed bentgrass near the area that was sprayed. Myself and my neighbor both have a dog and I know they would not want any chemical spreading into their yard (They have a lot of bent and do nothing more than mow/scalp their yard weekly). 2. When you originally removed your previous bentgrass, did it possibly return because you didn't dig it out deep enough? I was wondering if using something like a sod cutter would work just the same as Tenacity?? Thanks and keep up the great, informative vids!
Hey cdawg! I did spray near my property line and yes this can spread a little bit so use caution. A sod cutter may help getting down low enough and save your back. Some did return in the areas that I dug massive areas out which was kind of expected. You can just keep treating those smaller areas that return in the following seasons.
Great video JB. I love using tenacity on my lawn. I also use an electronic dethatcher on my lawn. Unfortunately it is to late in the season for us in Vermont to do the process in the beginning of the video. There's been frost and we're expecting some snow in the next day or two.
Hey WHITIE! I know you’re a big fan of tenacity! It works great! You’re right. Timing is everything for us northern lawn people. I was a little worried at one point because the bent grass was yellowing for so long then it finally turned white. We’re expecting snow soon as well. I have never had my lawn this dark green this late in the season. Shame it’s gotta get covered soon. Lots of lawn projects planned for spring though. Got any plans yourself for the lawn in the spring?
@@GarageGear just putting down my grubx and dethatching. I probably will also putting down my tenacity a few weeks after the grass is up and looking healthy.
Did the electronic dethatcher work well for you on bent grass @whitieinvermont? I just tried it after watching this video and I'm thinking I should have used a manual rake. The dethatcher seems to have pulled up a lot of the bent grass but left plenty of roots and some stems and runners. I'll have to rake as well, I think.
@gregjamieson7918 it works great. No need to worry about the grass. It will stand it up and also help to get the dead grass off the new and growing grass. Plus it actually allows the air to get to the new growing grass. You may want to consider using the rake to remove the dead grass or a mower that can either mulch it or into a bagger. If this is the first time for you, I think that you'll be surprised on how well it looks weeks after.
A few small spots have returned from the large areas that I ripped out which was to be expected. If you have a lot this is a multi season process. Thanks for watching!
Great video,I'm battling bentgrass for 3 years now.im gonna use a power rake to rip out instead of my hand de thatcher,a few areas are at least 10x10 and that's alot to do by hand
Curious how the power rake did? I’m 2 apps of tenacity in, but still seeing little green shoots form the bentgrass. My thought is to hit it one more time, wait a few weeks, then power rake.
@@cpalagyi I just sprayed my 3rd application last week and seeing alot of brown now.by labor day im hoping to rent a de thatcher and go to town.but each week as it's been dying I'm ripping out what I can with a hand dethatcher that way the next spray really gets to the roots
@@jeffiwanicki460 good call, sounds like you’re a few weeks ahead of me! I have about 4k sq ft, probably less than 1500 or so I need to give a good thatch. Does it help to make the batch of tenacity stronger? I’ve just been following the injection syringe and adding surfactant. I’ve been sticking to about 2 weeks apart too
I'm surprised you went with Big Box Store seed with all that work. I've got some grass like that on my east side. I can't tell if it's fine fescue or bent grass. It lays over like that. I grew some fine fescue in a shady area and it does the same thing. I'm doing a dethatch and overseed right now and I'm dealing with no rain in the forecast, a couple masting oak trees and squirrels attacking my lawn burying acorns.
@@xsiveone Jonathan green is great grass seed that comes up dark for me and I already spent enough on this project. If your grass has a long green grass blade it’s most likely a fescue. Bent grass is greenish blue and stubby
Thanks for the video. Thought I had a grub problem(brown patches in the summer) but also pull up like this. Thought maybe fungus (cause of the yellow/brown patches) but I’m pretty sure it’s this bentgrass. I live in southern Ontario (next to Detroit). Just wondering if I started the tenacity in August and finish round 2 by September so I can start the seeding and patch work in September to have more time in the fall with getting the grass growing and ready before Winter? Think I could aerate as well while doing this just before the seeding starts? Thanks
Haha thanks Flint! Trust me it’s not something you want to go to battle with on a regular basis. I was sore for like 3 days from all that raking! Snowblower season starting up by you?
Hey Brody here is a link to the leveling video I did BEFORE YOU LEVEL A COOL SEASON LAWN, WATCH THIS! ua-cam.com/video/Tc_3i9iPm8U/v-deo.html For the mixture are you referring to the grass seed? Or the tenacity?
Wouldn’t it be easier to use an electric power rake/dethatcher? I have a ton of this bent grass but I don’t want to use the hand dethatcher after I kill it haha
@@shawnodom975 great question Shawn. Those electric rakes won’t get down deep enough to get all the roots. Notice how you could see soil when I tore it up. You need to remove that much and those won’t go that deep
Great video!! Appreciate the time / quality you spent making it. The span of video like 3 months? Anyway, great job. FYSA just subscribed to ur channel. 🤙
Thanks a lot for the positive feedback Mills! I appreciate it! And thanks for subscribing! This was a big job no doubt about it and a lot of filming for sure but worth it in the end! Thanks for being a cool fan! 👍
Hello from central Ohio! @GarageGear - This is a great video that I'm looking to follow this fall. Did you work backward from the first frost date to arrive at your early September start date or was there another date you used to time this? Is there any problem with starting a bit earlier just to be safe?
Thanks for the informative video. I have bent grass in my lawn on a much smaller scale, just some patches here and there. I plan to spray the tenacity surfactant spray today and had a couple of questions. 1. Any issues with doing this in the spring versus fall? I am located in the Midwest so temps are just starting to get warm. 2. Is it an issue to fertilize with first treatment after about a week or so of the tenacity application? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching. You can fertilize at any point but the tenacity will kill any bent grass that you spray. So you will see yellow patches in the spring and your lawn will look like garbage. Hope this helps.
Hey Bondo! In my experience no. The machine did not get down deep enough to get all the roots. Friend of mine has one and it didn’t get low enough. Thanks for watching!
I live in Nebraska and in convinced I have bent grass invading my turf tenacity is not helped much some areas that did work other areas it's growing back I'm using Roundup now
Hey Samuel! Glyphosate products may be your friend at this point. Killing everything around it and reseeding may be the way to go. Thanks for watching!
Grass has taken over my whole front lawn. I have two small sections between a pathway I really think I’m better just digging it up because the whole thing is covered with bent grass. Should I dig up and still put tenacity down because this was dug up once before, and it came back. It is very hard to get all those stallions out. That’s why I’m thinking wants to once it is dug out. Should I spray tenacity down and if I do how long do I have to wait to seed and fertilize. I am in New Jersey right now and it is early spring March 17. Any suggestions would be helpful
Great video! I have come to learn that bentgrass has taken over much of my lawn so I'll be following your procedure this Fall. Around what date did you do your first application? I'm also in the Northeast.
So i have too much bentgrass to do what you did so with that said i will be killing my lawn about 4k sq ft with round up glysofate. Then 10 days later mow low. Then dethatch. Then if any grass still living will need another hit of round up glysofate. Then aerate both ways. Add loam Then Seed then peat moss. Then use roller tonget ground level?? Then water. Your thoughts on this sequence? Thank you. Love your vids. Cheers
Great video! Just curious, would an electric dethatcher have worked as well? I’ve also got a lot of bentgrass that I’ll be killing off soon but I want to dethatch the entire yard as well so I’m just wondering if the electric dethatcher would pull out all of the dead bentgrass or if the hand dethatcher is required. Thanks!
@@Avlniner hey Devin there is no way an electric dethatcher will up the bentgrass patches like I did. You gotta get down deep enough to pull roots up. Save your money for carbohydrates you’re gonna need them! 👍
Looks like a lot of work but it must be done. When you sprayed the lawn with your mixture did you do the entire lawn or just around where you saw the bent grass? How is it this year 2024? Looking to attack this soon here in OP. Go Bills!!
@@angelomiranda331 hey Angelo I only sprayed my front yard for this. Doing one area is strongly recommended. Three years later some small patches have returned in the larger areas I ripped out which was kinda expected. This is one of those things you have to keep up on and eliminate it over time
Thanks for the video dude. I know you said you did this in fall but what month exactly did you start this. I want to do it but I’m worried it’s too late
Can I ask when you actually start putting down the seed? Did you have to wait a certain period time after putting down the tenacity below is pictures of my lawn. I got most of it out already but there’s still some in there. Do you think I’d have to do two rounds of tenacity or just one ! Would like to send you some pictures, but it won’t let me
@@ginaadam3983 hey Ginaadam. UA-cam won’t let you comment with pictures. I would follow label directions of the tenacity. I put seed down immediately after I ripped out the old bent grass.
When (what date) did you start the process? That’s about a 2 month deal to germinate grass. I live in a warmer place than Buffalo, if I waited until Fall, I’d run out of growing time in a month.
Great video. I’m in the process of tackling my bent grass issues. I also have heavy amounts throughout my property. I’ve decided to do it in sections as to not be overwhelmed. Anyways, how is your lawn doing now? Has the bent grass come back much at all?
Hey gervevs. A little has come back in the larger areas that I ripped out. Which was expected based on how much I ripped out. Still holding up quite well
Have you found any resources saying it safe to spray under trees? I have a canopy of several 70 ft maple and oak trees that I want to keep safe! But the canopy also covers about 4000sf of my managed turf, which has bentgrass creeping in.
Hey life! I did not see anything about trees. I got about within 10 feet of my big oak tree and didn’t even think about that. No issues to report on my end!
I know exactly your problem. I have the same bentgrass all over my lawn. Tenacity is not available in Canada. I don’t suppose you can ship me a bottle or 2?
I live near you in Rochester, NY and I'm going to try and get ride of my bentgrass now in the spring not fall. I'm ready to start spraying but everything I read is saying I need to wait until the low temp are over 40. But really why should I wait, all I'm trying to do is kill the spots right? When do you think I should start? Thanks BTW, I subscribed, nice videos!
Hey Kevin! You could try it in the spring and see how it goes. I went according to label directions and got some great results. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I am in year 4 of my battle with bentgrass. I thought I had it beat last year, but came back with a vengence this year. How has your lawn held up after a few years post beat down?
I have so much mixed throughout the lawn I would have to kill off the entire lawn. I was really hoping to avoid a full reno. I have applied tenacity three times in two weeks intervals. I am going to do one more application.
So you started this treatment in the fall? Did you mow/water between your 2 applications of tenacity? How late is too late to put new grass seed down? Im in Michigan and looking to start tackling this stuff asap!
@@flyhighty yes I started in the fall! First week of September. I mowed once between my two applications. But I avoided big areas that the tenacity was working on. I would put grass seed down up until the about a month out from the first frost.
JB - As I mentioned I did this project last year. However, I have several brown spots that I'm not sure what has caused them. I do have an irrigation system and certainly have watered the lawn. any though?
Hey in Ontario here I applied 2 rounds of tenacity 10 days apart. I have been raking along the way. My back yard 2000 sq feet has a ton of bentgrass. I mowed in between and noticed it more after I scalped the lawn down but it didn’t really turn to white mostly brown like dead grass. I wonder if it was because I was raking and dethatched the lawn so maybe I wasn’t patient enough. Do you think that hurt the effectiveness of the tenacity to the bentgrass. I hope it wasn’t for nothing. I plan on doing one more round of tenacity this weekend. Should I wait few days before I seed the bare patches and over seed the whole lawn after the last tenacity application. I bought a 25lb bag of Barenbrug TTTF with RTF to seed with even though now I have KBG with Rye and fescue mix. Great video.
Hey Steve tenacity may harm the new seed. You gotta let it do its thing if you’re gonna put it down. I wouldn’t do a third because then you’re pushing your timeline of seed germination further back because you’ll have to wait another ten days or so.
@@GarageGear thanks for the reply and info. Your video is great and has helped me along my way. I was under the impression you can(should) apply tenacity at time of seeding but not after seeds start germinating.
Excellent work. I’m going through the same process. After seven hours of raking I think I’m gonna try renting the power dethatcher from local rental store and see if that makes getting the bent grass up easier.
Awesome you’re tackling this job too! I raked for many many hours. I don’t think the dethatcher will get down deep enough to grab the roots. Usually those only dig at the surface level! Good luck with your lawn restoration my friend
Crap ..... looks like my back yard. I knew about it 3 years ago but it's really been spreading. Anything come back yet on yours? Would love to see it in 3 ta 5 yrs. Peat Moss is great! I throw my down old coffee grounds when I'm reseeding, yep... it helps, google it. Thanks for the video good one! I need your kool-aid 😉
Hey Kaylee! Some little spots did return but that was expected from the massive areas I cleared out. I sprayed them again this year and knocked them out. Far less work this year compared to last. Thanks for watching and for being a cool fan! 👍
JB - Thanks for the great video. I also live in Buffalo and was wondering when you started this project? I'm looking to do something, but am concerned with the timing of doing this.
Awesome Mike! I started this project the first week of September in 2021. The whole project wasn’t really done until the last weeks of October. If you have any other questions just let me know! Go BILLS! Thanks for watching!
@@GarageGear JB - question for you. I plan on using a Sun Joe to de thatch the dead grass. I was wondering if you had areas that still had the bent grass after using the hand rake? PS the Bills looked GREAT last night.
@@mikepucser6821 hey Mike, that rake got it all. I worry that those machines won’t go down deep enough. I really pulled up roots with the rake. You shouldn’t have to respray anything that way. Bills looked Awesome man! Great start to the season!
One week sgo. I detached and aerated plus overseeding plus starter fertilizer. Is ot okay to fo the procedure you judt did. I am concerned with new seed i applied. Thanks for your help.
Hey Brody! Tenacity should not affect new grass. I would not do this now because it’s too late in the season. By the time the tenacity does it’s thing and you reseed it will be almost November. The new seed then won’t grow because temps will be too low. Keep on rocking my friend!
@@GarageGear will wait until April to dethach again those areas and reseed or sod. Any idea why bentgrass happens even if you use pre emergent in March or April? Use quality seed. I haven't seen this happen since I have living here for 27 years.
Hi. So it's now Oct 9th 2024. Two applications of tenacity. So now I assume pull out / or hard rake these areas so that there are no more bentgrass roots? Then either sod or reseed but it's too late to reseed here in the Boston area. So for 2025. Are you supposed to spray tenacity once a month in your entire lawn to make sure the bentgrass does not come back? I always use pre emergent in late March or early April. So please advise. Your vids are the best in learning what to do. Much appreciated
A few small patches have returned where I ripped out the largest areas. This was to be expected since I pulled out so much! Not hard to handle those spots. Thanks for watching Devan!
Hey JB, great video. I have about 9ksq ft with some big areas of bentgrass in front and back. Contemplating doing the reno w/Tenacity but debating if I should do it all at once or split up front and back. How long did it take for the bentgrass to die off enough to rake out and start the overseed? Nice work on the vid!
Hey Jake thanks for the positive feedback! I would definitely recommend breaking it up if you can. The tear out process is back breaking work if you have a lot to do. Hit the front one year and the back another maybe? Usually the first app takes about 2 weeks to start showing signs of die off and then the second app really gets it about two weeks after. So figure about a month. Two, two week applications. If you have any more questions let me know. Thanks for being a cool fan! 👍
@@GarageGear Forgot to ask, how is the yard doing this year on the bentgrass front? Did you have any return? Also, when you did have the bentgrass did you notice more disease/discoloration compared to your normal rye or fescue? I'm on a fert/biostim program and my bentgrass areas seem to be discolored and looking rough! plan on starting my first app of Tenacity end of July/beginning August to kill that off.
@@jakebosquez4060 I had two little spots return. One in each corner of the yard where I dug out a large crater! There was so much in those spots that I anticipated some may return there. If you have large spots dig down deep to get all the roots and refill them with new soil! I do notice diseased bentgrass before my normal turf in my side yard where I did not kill any bentgrass. It’s a weak turf. Turns brown much faster than the rest. If you’re going to spray anything try to do it early in the morning so it does create issues for you. 18 MONTH UPDATE ON BENTGRASS REMOVAL:
The HUGE patches of bent grass that were ripped out had a few small patches return!

Hey JB, I am planning to start this project in the next week or two. My questions are mainly around the first 4 weeks with the Tenacity applications.

Hey Ralph I’m pretty sure tenacity recommends two doses!
Agreed, great video! Central NY here with bentgrass creeping from neighbor's yard and a couple questions:
Any update on this from last year? Has it creeped back in? I have a problem as well, just curious if this is a multi-season process.

I'm in Brockport and have a ton of bentgrass. I'll definitely use these instructions. When did you start? Aug or Sep?
Awesome neighbor! I started last week of august or first week of September. Let me know how it goes for you!
When (what date) did you start the process? That’s about a 2 month deal to germinate grass. I live in a warmer place than Buffalo, if I waited until Fall, I’d run out of growing time in a month.
I have a cool season lawn and started this the first week of September! Thanks for watching con
Hey chin! I’ve friend shipping fluids to Canada before and it never goes well. Wonder why it’s not available?
Gonna try this this spring. Still happy with the results? And, do you know what will happen to the moss embedded in my lawn?
Yes, I do see a few bentgrass patches come back, but overall yes I’m happy with it. I would thicken up the lawn with some seed for the moss.
@@bryanmccracken7276 hey Bryan! I had a few spots come back. Mainly from the larger areas I ripped out. Have you thought about glyphosating yours?
I have so much mixed throughout the lawn I would have to kill off the entire lawn. I was really hoping to avoid a full reno. I have applied tenacity three times in two weeks intervals. I am going to do one more application.
@@bryanmccracken7276 oh wow sounds like you got a lot!
@@GarageGearthank you!
JB - As I mentioned I did this project last year. However, I have several brown spots that I'm not sure what has caused them. I do have an irrigation system and certainly have watered the lawn. any though?
Hey Mike not sure without seeing exactly. I would re seed and water like fiend! See what happens and let me know. 👍
Btw I want to aerate before I reseed. Should I do that before or after the last tenacity application. Thanks again
@@stevebaselj2478 you got it my friend! I wouldn’t apply after you seed for fear of it affecting it.
Excellent! 👍👍
Thanks for watching Dave!
Do you recommend respraying those areas? I'm a few days short of the 4 weeks ( 2 and 2) from applying the application of the liquid. I started to work on the yard yesterday.
@@brodygoalie not sure why it happens even if you use a pre emergent. Bent grass is crazy stuff!
Great video! Can we get a one year update?
A few small patches have returned where I ripped out the largest areas. This was to be expected since I pulled out so much! Not hard to handle those spots. Thanks for watching Devan!
Great video thanks, I killed this still the way you did several times it finds a way to comeback 🤦♂️
Bent Grass is pretty resilient! So far no sign of it. I’m keeping an eye out! Thanks for watching Bucky!
I know its an older video, did you eradicate it? Did it come back the next year?
@@peterscanlon9727 hey Peter! Some little spots came back the next year out of the larger areas I roped out. It was far easier to control from then!
did your spray leak out of the lid? I bought that sprayer and it works great however it strated to sloosh up and drip down out of the lid?
Hey Watts! Not a problem for me. Was the lid fully on? Thanks for watching!
Would using a dethatcher work?
No they don’t get deep enough to grab roots
Spraying at night can lead to some fungus in the lawn. If you have any more questions let me know! 👍
@@GarageGear Currently in the middle of a major front/side yard bentgrass kill off, just put down my 2nd round of Tenacity. I would say majority is killing off nicely, but some of the major/big areas are still showing life. Should I put down a 3rd app after 2 weeks of my 2nd? I've hit those spots the hardest and still don't seem to be dying off like other spots. Thanks!
@@jakebosquez4060 hey Jake if you just put it down I would wait it out to see. Mine turned more yellow and white as those last two weeks went on. Then see where you stand. 👍
Can I use a motorized dethatcher to pull up the bentgrass? I have a lot!
Hey Ken a dethatcher machine will most likely not dig down deep enough to get its roots. Thanks for watching
hows the bentgrass removal holding up?
Hey watts I left an update in the pinned comment. Thanks for watching!
After you sprayed the first time, you said you waited 2 weeks. I assume you still watered your lawn normally after a day or so?
@@michaelhollister7932 I only watered a little after a day or so. We were getting some rain help too
@@GarageGear I have this same problem in my lawn and I HATE Bent grass and I let it go for too long. But your video here has given me the motivation to "kick some serious bent grass butt!" I just hope it isn't too late in the season for us here in northern Utah. I will probably just do a smaller portion of my lawn now and the other in the Spring (or next Fall).
@@michaelhollister7932 that’s a good plan my friend! Glad to hear this video motivated you! 👍
When did you start the tenacity application...? Was it the middle of August, or... ?
It was the first week of September here in Buffalo New York! I was done with this whole project around mid to late October. Thanks for watching!
@@GarageGear I'm outside of Cleveland. I started mid to late August with the mesotrione for bent grass. Seeded that area 2 weeks ago. Came across poa triv in some low areas that i smoked with glyphosate last week
I pre germinate the seed while I'm waiting for the chemicals to do their thing... so far so good.
@@jcs1758 sounds like you’re off to a great start JC! Let me know how it turns out for you!
Maybe I missed it in the comments. But does Tenacity also kill the weeds in your lawn like clover crabgrass. And does it leave fine fescue alone?
Hey Bondo! Tenacity will kill weeds and clover. I’m pretty sure it knocks down crab grass too. It should leave the fine fescue alone. Thanks for watching!
Great job
Thanks Scott! Thanks for watching!
What brand of worm castings do you recommend? How much per 1000 sg ft? Are all worm castings able to be spread with a spreader?
Hey Rod! Any brand of worm castings seem to work well. Wiggle worms have been great for me. 5lbs per 1000sf seems to work well but they have changed their consistency and can’t be spread with a spreader. Honestly better with a shovel and rake lol
@@GarageGear Thank you for the information. We have almost all of our supplies for our bentgrass beat down. Thank you for your video. Extremely helpful.
@@RodMaass you got it my friend
@@GarageGear I need to cut the grass soon. Can I cut the treated area? If so, bag or mulch?
I am only at day 2 of treatment.
do you have to remove it all? can you just reseed + top dressing?
Good question Matthew! If you only want to do this in a few small spots you can do that. You don’t have to do your entire lawn. The more you spray the more you’ll have to pull out down to the roots. Thanks for watching!
What company sells that dirt mix for leveling? Thanks
Hey Michael are you in the Buffalo area?
The dead bent grass just went in plastic bags? Does that just go to your dump? You don't have yard waste options there?
Our yard waste options are pretty limited here. Mainly leaves and that’s it.
@GarageGear wow. So all of that just goes to the dump? Yikes!
