Based on your video, it appears longer grass is ok, but it will take more work to spread it. That's ok. I recommend ditching the wheel barrow and buying a gorilla cart. Much easier on the back!
Hey Dan! Yeah there was no way I could get it down to one half inch. Probably would have killed it or my mower! I got it down to 1.5 or 2 inches and that was fine. 👍

JB - I did the lawn last year removing the bent grass and I see I have a few bare spots this year. Do you recommend using the soil/sand mixture along with the seed? Or just seed and then fill in the low spots next year are later this year? Also, living in Buffalo when did you do the leveling job in the spring?
Hey Mike! Now is the time to level the lawn. Spring time in Buffalo is best. Level the low spots with a sand soil mix. Put some seed on top. Put some peat moss over it and let it grow! In about two weeks you’ll be good as new! Thanks for being a cool local fan!
I thought the same thing about the leveling rake when spot leveling. I think it works a lot better and easier on larger areas where it's primarily dirt, OR if the turf is super low. Incidentally, I used 2 bags of top soil to 1 bag of sand, whatever sizes those were at home depot... Worked pretty well.

Hey Martin! I would definitely keep the grass that’s currently there and just smooth it out. Old grass is the best grass. It’s hardy and new grass may suffer with summer temps on the way!
@@GarageGear you mentioned in the video if I use dirt only I will end up where I started and that's what happened to me last year. The craters were back. Originally the last owner had a huge dog that tore up the lawn and left bumps, lower and higher areas. I almost sprained my ankle walking through one day. Anyway, do you think it's a good idea to roll a wet lawn since the dirt is softer after I apply the mixture?
@@martinp.9853 yes definitely roll the the lawn to ensure it’s flat and smooth. You could even give it a quick roll before and after to really get it down. 👍

JB how did the leveling end up a year later? I tried using sand mix in the past (25% sand/75% soil) but it became really spotty for future growth of cool season grass.
All good here! Every lawn is different! There could be a million factors affecting your lawn and it’s level. Leveling is usually not just a one and done process. Typically you’ll do it over a few seasons.

I have a bumpy lawn in my backyard it's a small area. Could I just till it and start over with seeding or you think this is worth a shot?
Who knew Duffman was a lawn guy?
Thanks for watching sc!
@@GarageGear great content btw, new subscriber here
Throw the sand in when you screen topsoil and save a step
Thanks for sharing
Just realized I love my bumps now after watching this.... lol. Gonna go fishing instead!
I probably should have went fishing as well lol! Thanks for watching
Love the vids. Really looking forward to future Toro Timemaster videos!
I got a couple in mind Dave! Stay tuned! Thanks for being a cool fan!
Can't wait to see how it turns out! 👍
I’ll be getting some clips later this week! Hang in there my friend I know the suspense is killing you! 😂👍 taking a bit longer because we just had a week of higher temps.
strongly appreciate your realistic projections of timing, so true other YTs dont illustrate how long jobs take.
Hey Andrew! I try my best to lay it all out for everyone so that way they know what they are getting into! Thanks for watching!
Last week , lawn mower reviews. Subscribed. This week I need to know how to level my yard. Boom! Winning
BOOM! You’ve arrived at the right channel DJ! Thanks for watching bud!
You're nuts man! I get it but spending time with family is a higher priority 🙏😉😊😇

How do you like that spinning composter?
Works great Pete! In the spring summer and fall it turns out compost about every month! No complaints on my end! Thanks for watching!
Best lawn leveling vid
Appreciate you Jose! Thanks for watching!
Hey jb! Nice video dude 👍
That material disappears fast doesn’t?!?
Hey Bud! Good to hear from you! I was planning on send the video your way! I know you’re the leveling pro! The sand soil mix definitely went down fast! The law is nice and flat! Seed is coming up quick! Just need some more rain! How’s everything on your end?
Look easy but obviously isn't a easy task to take a lot hard work and $$$$ nice looking lawn BTW 👍
Hey best friend! This is definitely not a task you want to do every year. It is a bit of work and can be expensive depending on the tools and soil you’ll need. Appreciate the positive feedback. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing! Did you buy that screen or make your own?
You got it J! I actually made my own screen! Thanks for watching!
When ordering top soil.....ask if it's been treated for weed seeds
Good tip! Thanks for sharing!
how long after the initial starter fertilizer can you put down some regular fertilizer ??
About 6-8 weeks! Thanks for watching

Great video, your yard looks great dark rich green. I have a question, what was the temperature like when you put it down? Thanks
Hey Eric! About 60 degrees I think! Thanks for watching!
My next house will be a corner lot like yours, that way I can dominate the neighborhood from two sides and one less neighbor with a crappy yard to deal with
Smart move it! Thanks for watching!
Do you have underground sprinklers?
I do not Bryan! Best to be careful doing this around them.
You really have an attention to detail.
I try to cover as much as possible so people can make educated purchases. Thanks for watching Houston!

hello excellent videos have a lot of teaching, I have a question I live in the Wisconsin area and I am looking for recommendations on what type of top soil I can use to level the lawn
Hey Javier! Not sure what’s available locally near you but if you can find a topsoil with sand mixed in that is a huge plus!
@@GarageGear thank you
Did you know “waterproof” tarps will trap humid air overnight ? The next morning you get wet clumpy dirt and a soaked tarp.

That 13$ peat moss last yr from

Hi I'm Troy McClure, you might know me from such films as "How to level a cool season lawn" 😂
Another awesome video ...very informative. Your lawn is gorgeous now , and it's gonna be even more gorgeous. Thanks for making the video .
You got it edgardo! Appreciate you bud! 👍
Any guy that owns that many cones is next level 😂😂
Hahaha The garage gal and I also teach fitness classes. We use cones all the time for those so I figured they be perfect for the video! Thanks for being a cool fan as always JS!
I finished the video this morning. The peat moss, in my opinion, is the best way to get seed going and keeping it wet. Great choice for seed as well. Hard work pays off and the neighbors know it👍🏻
@@js12278 the peat moss definitely does a great job! I love giving my neighbors a hard time!
I see the Tommy Topsoil ad while going to Orchard Park and have been wondering how good their soil is but don't know anyone whose used it. Thanks for the review!
Haha awesome Crepe soul! Small world huh? I think they may have used this video somewhere on their website. Please Mention you saw this video to them. 👍I think they’ll appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Do you have any good tips for if you back yard gets to wet after rain and takes for ever to dry
If water is sitting there for a while you may want to consider a drain tile in your yard. Installing these can be a lot of work but your yard will be significantly drier! Do you have a large area that stays wet?
Great video
Thanks for watching Jesse!
Good video. Another advise I found here and there is to mix the seeds with your dress-sand/soil beforehand. Do you agree ?
Yeah, you could do that. Thanks for watching!
Great video jb!!!!!
Thanks a lot Fire Buff! Appreciate the positive feedback! 👍
Man i really need to invest in a huge mower like that
No ya don’t! That one is riddled with problems. Sold it last year. And did a review of its issues. Thanks for watching though!
I was just told on a different channel that if you have tall fescue the only way to level is by full renovation 🤦♂️
This method worked great for me! Thanks for watching
I noticed you cut your lawn without the bag, then with it. Did you do two passes??
Yes I did a clean up pass because there were so many clippings from cutting low. Thanks for watching Jonathan! 👍
I’m also in buffalo ny! Love watching your videos, I started watching this winter when I bought my first snowblower.

Sure is! Definitely not something you do all the time! Lol! Thanks for watching tacome!
I feel like you may be buying low quality ice cream.
Hahaha thanks for watching sharp!
This would have worked better if you cut your grass shorter
Perhaps! But my mower was bottoming out in spots. Some things you just have to deal with. Thanks for watching
How many yards is that?
I think that was about 5 yards!
awesome I'm going to call Tommy and get my lawn filled in from where my pool was in the spring
@@bc454irocz89 tell him JB from Garage Gear on UA-cam sent you!👍
Why wouldn't you cut your grass way shorter instead of ending up with blotchy areas?
If I went any lower the mower would bottom out in spots. Mow as low as you can comfortably go with it
@@GarageGear I didnt realize there was that many dips. Grass looks like 2" long! The first time i tried to level it looked like that and i just killed off holes of grass versus spreading it out more.
@@PatriotBrad it’s mostly along the edges I would be bottoming out. Don’t want to scalp it
It made me cringe he dumped the dirt straight on the concrete
Hey Nick! Can’t dump it in the street. Town won’t allow it.
Cant handle the gameshow host talk.
