I love the fact that at the beginning of the video, the family talked about the pressure of representing all Black people because we are not a monolith. The experience with the black family and Baltimore can and probably is very different than with a family in Texas, Louisiana or even California.
Absolutely! You could even include black people in the Caribbean too their experience may differ.
Not very different but maybe different in terms of Classism, religion, and origin of home state, or parts of the Carribean, South and Central America may play a roll in that. But our roots are African in Spirit and DNA. Unchain the Brain .
I agree. I will say as a Black man from Charleston, SC, I found some differences but also so many similarities with this Black family in Baltimore. I think that can said for many families across our entire country.
Being afro carribean british the watermelon story came as a surprise to me. It's just not our experience of the black British story.

@@Jay-jb2vr you'd be nervous around anything you don't have a lot of experience with. His gf is mixed. But from across the ocean. The black culture in the US is unique to black culture anywhere else. He had a very unreliable experience with a family in Louisiana that made him nervous. Maybe he thought maybe it was BECAUSE he's white? Idk. But I used to live in Bmore and SE DC, but I still get nervous in those areas. As anyone should be. On high alert.
The whole family and I had an amazing experience with you Markian! The world needs more of this openness to learn about each other, no matter how different. I believe what we’ll find is that we’re all pretty much the same. We all want to enjoy life with family, friends, and good food, to prosper and be respected. This was so awesome to watch because I as a white person I see the differences between me and black people because I see I can go in to the store and I could steal but they would blame the closest black person for my crimes I see the distrust in white people and it is honestly so sad, it's sad also that I am going to school for cosmetology and black hair skin and all of that are not part of what we learn and I feel that if I can't learn that then I'm not worth anything as a hair dresser and I hope that one day I can

Same here! I LOVE watermelon and bring it to work with my lunch. I live in the South and do not care what anybody thinks! I can’t tell if the white people even know about the history.....I really don’t care.
Racist white people care and want us to as well but at lease we know how to season
Same ... but in my younger years I was definitely aware of the foolishness. Food was one of the weapons of choice other black Americans used to ridicule not to mention the racist comments thrown out there by others. Thick skin and maturity allow me to give folks the death stare now when they try it. 😂

Most black families are welcoming and open, especially after they get to know you and you're not prejudice.
Those are the 1 percent that actually get to graduate and study and live in a white neighboorhood of course they have to be welcoming

The majestic beauty of this landscape called United States is not just its land mass the terrains and seasonal changes, it is a microcosm of the globe (I don't have to travel to Ecuador to have met an Ecuadorian, or to any other global country or territory because inspiringly and beautifully there is a piece of the world right here in this ONE country - the "United States".
Believe it or not "never judge a book by the cover" as a human species WE have flaws and hang-ups of insecurity, but WE do need each other, WE do want peace and fairness. More than not, WE are a peace-loving people but like anyone else when constantly being pushed down in the attempt to drown us, WE eventually will hold onto the hand trying to put us under to either release it from us or take it with us if we aren't allowed to coexist. We Care & We Share & We have patience to try to figure things out.
I released myself from the mental shackles of caring what white people and other non-Black people think of me and my culture. I will eat watermelon, dance and wear my hair as I please. My life doesn’t revolves around who thinks what of me, because I have knowledge and love of self.

Love how they stated white and black accordingly without any sense of being discriminatory. Some think saying white or black is discrimination but it’s a fact that’s the color of a skin.

It’s so refreshing to see a happy and united family.
Black families are some of the most accepting of other races. We feed and treat and shower with love and support. If only we got the same in return from others
True. But our hospitality is also our downfall. Yes, great love and respect other people groups but be wise when it comes to doing business because at the end of the day each person is out for themselves but black people tend to give away without thinking ahead.
The genuineness is in his eyes and smile. He is humanly vested. The fact that he is trying to understand black people and black culture, is admirable.

This family represents barely 30% of black fanilirs....if that, people judge blacks for good reason.

As a black person that grew up like how their family operates from church , to intellectual conversations about our struggles as people, to dancing and bonding I loved to see this it felt like you were visiting my family❤
We celebrate Juneteenth with the black half of our family every year. This is such a great holiday and very important. Thank you for bringing some awareness to this. There are so many whites out there who don't care at all about the importance of this holiday.
A lot of people don't know about Juneteenth but it's an important holiday! We talked more about it on the day but most the video aimed at highlighting Black culture. There was so much to cover!

Juneteenth is a company holiday at my company. Nobody else I know in my entire city or state is off work for the day. I think it’s great that my company is making it an observed holiday and I think others should start doing the same.

I love black people!!! I always feel at home with my black friends. One time a black lady who I'd only met a few hours earlier said "You're a white woman with black woman's soul."
I really wish we could do this more, and not be afraid to take the first step to get to know and understand each other without preconceived notions. Thanks for doing this episode.

I am from Iceland and frankly there aren't that many black people here and so whenever I see one I tend to look and and if they look back I just smile because honestly I'm just happy to see a non blonde haired blue eyed person for once 😂❤

Despite all of the propaganda,hate and negativity constantly shown on the media, most people of all races are actually very nice and accepting like the wonderful family on this post. You can find good loving people everywhere if that’s what you are seeking.🙏

exactly! racism 100% exists still to this day, but the media is trying to divide us more than they are unite which does not help at all. They focus on the hate and negativity towards others instead of sharing the good news of communities like this coming together and the reality that it can be a great time and that we are all human and we come from the same God.
As someone who has hoped from foster home to foster home and got raised around black culture they family fr fr I’ve only lived with one white foster family but I loved the stuff I’ve experienced they showed me more love than my own family fr

I applaud him for wanting to simply understand. A lot of people call themselves Allies but don’t understand.
As a white teenager originally from the US and now living in South Africa, In the last 5 years I've spent a lot of time in black african households. I think a lot of black Americans might be suprised by the amount of similarities. Yes there are differences in language, types of music and the way people dress, but family "Braais" are incredibly similar to cookouts and the devotion to family, aswell as the appreciation for community, food, music and dance is definitely shared. Its heartbreaking how much of black American peoples history was stolen from them, but its great to see that some of the core african values (such as Ubuntu and Ujamaa) have remained despite the many struggles black americans have had to face through generations. The warmth, acceptance and willingness to teach me their traditions, shown by my friends families, has brought me closer to their families than I have ever been with mine. I would love to hear a black person who has experienced black american culture and black african culture share their views and opinions. Also please remember that this is my observation from a white persons perspective and is not nessisarily an accurate representation of how black people may experiance this.

I enjoy these videos and learning about other cultures. The three episode Hawaii was really good. Having a three part video, you got to see more and understand the culture. In one video everything seems rushed and a longer one, you learn so much more.
I'm glad you enjoy these videos! There's going to be one other culture that I'm splitting up into 2 episodes. The tough part is that each video takes 3 weeks to edit and I'm trying to complete 10 families this year so we're going to have to keep them shorter 😭 I may or may not be working on a podcast to be able to have deep conversations and not cut them out of the video...
When I was in foster care, I lived with a black family. Went to a black church. Went to all of their stuff. She was one of my two favorites. But, when my son was born when I was 18, my black foster mom was so sweet, the white one apologized and made me feel bad. That's not my overall experience with both cultures, but people need to stop acting like white is right. As a white, conservative woman.
Black people just want to be treated with respect like a human being white people care about animal than black people black people want to live in peace not deal with racism

That was cool and informative to watch. I completely understand the BBQ and feeling out of place. Yet at the same time, some of the BEST times I've ever had. Some of my closest friends are black and I've spent MANY cookouts, Thanksgivings, Christmases, Birthdays, Fourth of July, Easter, Memorial Day, and just hanging out for no specific reason, enjoying fellowship, games, and good food! They truly felt like family when I was alone. I think more people should open themselves up to experiencing that and learning about other cultures.
I love this video. So much! As a white woman who has always felt so accepting. Seeing the family explain how they feel opens my eyes even more and will in the future, allow me to approach those of colors in a better manner. 💕

As a Black man who is born and raised in Los Angeles around nothing but Armenians I can tell you that they strongly believe in gatekeeping their culture and can be very mistrustful of outsiders. Which makes sense.
Maybe this Markian guy can do a show where he takes a Black man into Glendale around his people and maybe it can tear down some misunderstandings and misconceptions we might have of another. 🤷

This is actually amazing, I love how he explains the nervousness and they explain the culture and history, I used to make water melon jokes all the time thinking it was just because they like water melon so it shocked me when I heard what it’s actually from.

What is sad is that they shouldn't have to. We should be teaching the history of all the people of the united states in schools. The idea that a person can graduate High school in the United States and not be adequately educated about their fellow Americans is just astounding. It's great you have good friends and frustrating that the nation's school systems insist on failing to educate white students about African and Native Americans. Black history IS American history which you should know. The reason you don’t is due to the fact that America calls it black history to absolve itself from accountability, which your comment is proof of this fact.

To be honest, I see white people eat more watermelon than us. I never have watermelon when we cook out, not because of stereotypes but I just don’t buy it alot. I love it when I do buy it. I love this. Just like the stereotypical statement about welfare when statistical there are more white people on the system than black people. I learned also that, white people are safer around us than we’re around them. I love this

I Noticed that every time I go to WHOLEFOODS hot food bar, there is an Asian, light Hispanic or white person that would see me making my way around, and they would stand directly in front of the damn chicken or stand behind me looking over my shoulder to see if I would grab the chicken.

The funny thing is, I always go for the beef before chicken。
I love beef stew over Arugula salad and white rice, which so happens to be a THAI dish. (I discovered this when I thought I came up with something 😂)
The Asians, Whites and Hispanics eat chicken as much as we do if not more than. I don't why they are so ignorant when In our presence.
I believe they can be more aggressive and violent too, because we mind our business while they mind us. They always feel uncomfortable around us. I mean, I've seen white and Asian girls only decide to stroke their hair while looking at a black girl with an afro, head wrap or braids. They assume that we all have fake hair for being bald and want us to be jealous of their hair when we are having a good "minding our business" time, while they keep trying to get our attention in order to offend us.

When they mentioned the melon stero type I felt a deep rooted hurt, first of all because I had not heard about that before, and I could feel them carrying all the burdens these injustices brings and it is heavy the yoke our people bear.

I live in New Orleans, and I and most of the people I know have close friendships and family members from all sorts of cultural backgrounds. Its hard for me to understand that there are places in this country where that isn't the norm. We have so many festivals here, and whether they are focused on black or latino or asian culture, people of all backgrounds feel very comfortable attending them.
I lived in Baltimore which is a majority-black city. Afram always has lots of white people in attendance. There are also lots of Asian vendors, selling Asian food, and Italian vendors selling Italian food, especially sausages. Of course, there are West Indian vendors and music also. This year there has been a boom in Latinos moving to Baltimore so, we expect to see more Latinos at Afram in the next few years. It's as close to a multicultural experience as you can get in Baltimore
We're all human we should be enjoying each other company instead of being racist just because of skin color how stupid the guy was having fun
