I ALWAYS de-lint my rollers. Get a big strip of ducttape and roll roller over the tape it until it stops picking up fuzz. I go through about 6-10 ft of duct tape to do this, but it makes a HUGE difference just, fyi
THANK GOODNESS! I’ve been searching and asking for this exact demonstration. And, in black✔️ My roller handle came with foam but I took a leap of faith and ordered 1/2 inch nap, last night. I don’t need to go in the same direction?! No, I’m not painting wood. So helpful AND such a relief. This project is kicking me while I’m down. I learned a hack that I have yet to try because I can’t get the paint right but a furniture painter, sorry I forgot who or I would give them credit. Anyway, she said to mix a bit of the paint you used into the poly coat and that helps insure that you don’t have streaks or in my case, it’s sort of an unevenness. I can’t explain my struggle but it’s real! I’m ready to tackle this project, once AGAIN. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This is good, and just to add: try wetting out your rollers before painting and to combat the fuz try wrapping tape around the roller and then peel it off the remove loose lint and fabric, lastly waterborne clear coats will, a significant amount of the time, cause white pigments to yellow like within hours. great vid thanks
"...if you have a Menards in your area..." That line broke my heart. I moved to Florida and Menards is one of the things I miss most about the Midwest.
That's point of foam roller for a more fine finish it's not for coverage,u wouldn't use foam roller on plain pine, use foam on already covered area to get fine finish, like on cabinet doors
Awesome info! Thank you so much! I've been debating on fabric rollers since they're more expensive. I don't mind paying a little more for better quality.
So perhaps a foam roller where you want to be sure there'll be no unwanted spread, in other words for more accuracy. For instance, if painting trim. I like to use a brush, but if your not good with the brush or don't want to see any brush strokes. You'll probably want to use a roller. This is where those mini 2" inch "touch up" rollers work really nicely. An when getting the tops or bottom, if you don't want to get any on the other surface or carpet. The foam one may be a safer bet then the fabric / nap roller. Although I feel like you can also see the difference in texture between the foam and fabric roller, so may want to take that into account as well.. Kind of hard to notice much of a difference in the textures, in the video. But it is a little different, an the foam roller definitely applies a "thinner" coat."
I’ve always found it confusing that so many advocate the cross-hatch or W method of application, because whenever I watch professional painters apply paint to a wall, they always go in vertically straight overlapping lines and don’t do the cross-hatching technique. Quite an enigma.
Yeah, I don't know any pros that do the w method - maybe at rare times (uneven surface for ex). One thing non pros do frequently is not load up the roller enough with paint - then they try to push hard to get the paint on the wall. (trying to paint that w and m with almost no paint left on roller) Keep the pan close to the wall, load up roller, and the first vertical stroke should be up - so paint isn't doing a Niagara falls down the walls. And not too much pressure the first few up and downs. Repeat for next area - overlapping enough. If working left to right - do a finish stroke with a little more pressure on the right side of the roller to get rid of any edge line (on left) roller might leave. ps - like fabric, not crazy about the sponge ones. They don't hold much product. A brush would probably be quicker for poly cause it can hold more.
Quantanglement obviously knows what they are talking about. Shes going on her experience here doing a few things around the house. Fully supported by her partner who's an IT professional mountain biking weekends. When you are good looking, mildly handy, have means and probably loved by your circle of friends who is going to say you really aren't doing this right? Or theres a better way. Her millennial confidence then says "well, this works for me!"
I'm a pro, and quantanglement basically described how I would roll a surface as well. You should not hear the paint or roller fibers pulling from the surface. Use a wet roller and coverage will be better and there will be less splatter. Foam rollers are great filler for the trash can.
The polyester brush works but you have to be sure to work the bristles to get any loose ones out first, especially if it’s cheap. Foam brushes haven’t impressed me but I’ll have to check out the roller.
Will a foam roller do good on painting a truck. I got one coming but from what I see online it doesn't look as good as spraying with a hvlp spray gun or a electric sprayer but painting now would have to paint inside with all the pollen outside now and even more the windier it gets.
It all depends on what your putting it on but I like the comparison with the SAME color that shows the true texture foam is only good for metal or flat surfaces and gets rid of stipple effects 😉
We recently moved from the metro to Zimmerman, and this Septic System Life is a HUGE damper on my projects😩 Wondering if you happen to have septic, and if so, any tricks on cleaning tools/brushes responsibly? LOVE your channel, I’ve learned SO much and am so inspired 💞
With any painting I keep at least a dirty and clean bucket with my paint. You have to soak all rollers and brushes before you paint anyway and then I was taught to clean everything throughly every hour or so to keep paint from curing in your bristles and rollers. When I'm done I just rinse it and dump it in the yard.
@@dlove118 thx fir the reply! Our property boarders a wetland, so I won’t dump paint water on our property. Your paint brush washing routine is the opposite of mine, I wrap the brush/roller in plastic wrap and keep in fridge between “shifts”, which explains my gunky tools! 😂😂😂 thx!!
If you have OCD? ADHD? Don’t paint! It’s never good enough! You can spend every day of the rest of your life Taping, painting, sanding, filling holes... repeat.. you find stuff you would not notice if you have house done fore you.. beware of floorboards! You will never achieve perfection 😂😂😂😂
I bought a great foam roller that looks like microfiber. Lowes. Worked right for me. Her comparison here looks like she's inking a printing press instead of painting. A couple things she should have is a primed board to start plus enough paint to get the texture a knappy roller is meant to provide.
if you use the 1/4" rod style handles and covers, don't push the roller cover on all the way. Push on and then back off a fraction of an inch. When pushed all the way, they will bind and not spin freely. Often times, brushing or rolling is faster, gives better coverage, and has less prep and clean up......then again, I'm a pro and have sprayed 2 part coatings with automotive style guns as well as using airless for large areas and plenty of brushing and rolling. They all have their pros and cons.
total nonsense, you cannot compare a fur roll with a foam roll. you also can't compare apples with pears. both rolls are for different backgrounds or for different colors. like glazes, dispersion paints, varnishes etc.
She has a thousand dollar camera! Haha. It takes a great movie style picture but she obviously knows it misses the details in closeup and texture. But then who is here to learn about painting? You want painting see the "idaho painter" on "paint life TV". Chris knows how to paint.

It can help with new cloth rollers to wash them with clean water and spin dry with a air hose this gets any lose nap out before you paint

This video was so useful. Thank you!
You are great at your job
Nice clear instructions and explanation of the cloth or foam rollers great video overall 😁👍
I'm gonna return the foam rollers. I thought I was doing something incorrectly when it took many rolls to get a uniform look.
Interesting, never thought much about the differences.

Hello from Bulgaria,както винаги много профисионална работа продължавай все така и много успехи....
This is pretty satisfying
The foam rollers do not have a good finish, it’s very orange peel like look/feel rather than a really smooth look/feel. Good for outside finish!!
