I think Denis’ means in that Dune: Messiah “ends” Paul’s arc in the sense that Paul is no longer the protagonist after Messiah. Though he’s still in the story,he’s no longer our point of view character
@@tgiacin435 Paul wasn't the protagonist in Dune Messiah. He's more of an Anti-Villain. What Messiah does is it exposes how Paul was never really a Protagonist but rather an angry leader who was hell-bent on vengeance and drunk on power.
@@DW-bk5nb I get ya. But by the time Messiah starts Paul already has it all. The only real protagonist if any for Paul would be trying to get out of his reign. Dune is one of those where there are good arguments for most of the main characters can be thought of as either one. Just comes down to perspective. But that's what makes the series great.
I completely agree with you on taking the time to get the story right. The changes Denis made to Dune itself (timeline, Chani's arc, Alia's presentment, etc.) certainly don't preclude him from coming up with a fantastic script for Dune Messiah that respects the source material while still being the basis for a great cinematic experience. But striking the necessary balances will be a tricky business, for reasons you've discussed in this and previous videos. It's important that Denis not rush the process, and I don't think he will allow the studio execs to push him any faster than he's willing to go.
YES! Villeneuve needs to take his time and get Dune Messiah right! He earned a TON of goodwill from fans by how well he handled the first two movies. The shame would be to rush it for artificial deadlines (or money) and produce a sub-par show. Longtime Dune fans, and new ones that have enjoyed his Dune adaptations, will be delighted to buy tickets whenever it comes out in theaters.
There is a natural 12 year timeline break between the Storey in Dune and the start of the storey in Dune Messiah. Paul has to have aged significantly during this period and shifted from success and WAR with the great houses to cynicism after victory. It is therefore essential that if the current cast is to be used then time needs to pass in the real world as well. The 3rd book in the original series "Children of Dune" carries on a further 9 years later. 3 other books were originally published by Frank Herbert making a total of 6 books: "God Emperor of Dune" (1981): This book represents the most significant time jump in the series, occurring about 3,500 years after "Children of Dune." It follows the rule of Leto II Atreides, who has transformed into the God Emperor. "Heretics of Dune" (1984): The narrative of "Heretics of Dune" happens approximately 1,500 years after "God Emperor of Dune," introducing a significantly changed universe in the wake of Leto II's long reign. "Chapterhouse: Dune" (1985): The last book written by Frank Herbert, "Chapterhouse: Dune," picks up shortly after the events of "Heretics of Dune," with no major time jump between these two books. Dune 7 was the working title for Frank Herbert's seventh Dune novel, which was to be the concluding chapter of the entire Dune series. He had hinted that he was planning to end the series; however, the work was never completed because of his untimely death in February 1986. AND of course family members and others have written their own books.
I dont have a doubt on Denis vision of the Dune Universe. Because not only did he succeed with the 1st one he succeeded again with part 2 and was even used as reference source for the dune game thats in development and even the Dune Show is using the vision of dune he created in their show. Denis Paved Dune for WB, however this where it can ultimately fail. Just like how disney is fumbling the title of Star war, WB has that chance to screw it up too once Denis walks away and they wish to continue the story of Dune. Unlike SW tho they do have a beginning, middle and end. Its just can they find a visionary if not as conparably or greater than Denis to carry Dune forward if WB chooses this route.
I realize I’m in the minority. I was disappointed in the movies because I just couldn’t connect with the characters motivations as presented. I waited and bought both movies at the same time because I was so sure I would like it. It turned out that I didn’t care what happened to the characters. I have read Dune (the first book) twice and enjoyed it. I have not read deeper, so I wouldn’t be considered a Dune fan.
Paul becomes the blind Preacher in children I loved the SF channel children of dune series I have high hopes but I can't wait to see what happens to Alia. Hopefully Chani drops that crappy attitude. Good info
My guess is that Villenueve wants to do it like a Godfather/Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, which stopping at Dune Messiah would be perfect for. Children of Dune Paul was more peripheral while his son is the central character.
Ill never understand the chani going off on her own in the movie I really hope chani and jessica get that talk still because imo it was way more impactful and insipring tbh its more powerful to have two women known as concubines state that they will be the ones remembered as wives rather than in name only especially with how bad ass they are it really defeats the point of what frank wanted to say with that situation i think
@@andrewog3516 I can see that actually. That would be good to have Jessica return for just one scene in Messiah even though she’s not in the book. Her POV could help return Chani to Paul. However Jessica was one of the orchestrators of this so Chani might not want anything to do with her. We’ll see.
The film literally has Paul stating that she will come around so there is no reason to think she won't be with Paul in Messiah. The changes are to focus on Paul becoming a dark figure and not a hero, which Herbert himself felt like he failed to convey with the first novel as so many readers took the wrong messages from it. Villeneuve has stated multiple times that he aimed to follow Herbert's actual intent and make it clearer.
I'd love for DVN to continue the whole of Frank Herbert's Dune but I'm sure he'd said in an interview when Dune Part One came out that he wasn't sure how to handle the weirder aspects of the original six novels, and that made him decide only to adapt Dune & Dune: Messiah.
Not understanding the Denis hate here. He did a great job with translating such dense material into something both book fans and audiences can like. His changes were overall for the better imo (other than Chani). If anything I was impressed that he included scenes and characters like Margot Fenring
@ true but I feel like dune is so complex that including all the pieces would’ve gotten overcrowded and make people complain about how rushed and nonsensical it was
If you wanted a complete book to screen, you’d have to go the game of thrones route. But as for the movies, I’m waiting to see how Denis concludes it. Chani was fine for the most part, and I thought having her be the cynical voice Paul and Jessica had in the books worked. But I’m curious to see what they do with her, cause she still has to be mother to Leto and Ghanima. But I think they’re gonna make it part of Paul’s vision, knowing that he can’t be with her because he would lose her would make their final moments all the more tragic since they had very little time together. As for Margot. I love that they had her, but I wish we also count Fenring as well. They said Lady Margot was the emperor’s childhood friend, yet we don’t see her interact with him. I would’ve loved to see the Fenring’s talk about Feyd in their secret language while watching him. Though I’m hoping that messiah is gonna have Alia fight Feyd and Margot’s daughter.
He fucked up the timeline, fucked up the religion, left out the most impactful thing, losing a child, Chani leaving totally changes the story. Nobody really cares about Margot, unnecessary installment, where as Count Fenrings involvement would have been something I have waited. Its not Dune. I dont understand why you guys worship him so much if you love the actual story. There was no reason to take so much liberties when the path was basically laid out for him.
@@SweetandFullofGrace Yeah no one is going to watch a four hour movie that includes everything. It's an adaptation for a reason. I'm sorry you wanted a page for page reenactment of everything in the books but those don't really exist, and would be much worse than what we got, because they're different media.
I didn't care for the time compression in Dune. I don't see how You can win over an army and train them in 6 months. That was unrealistic. The director also took a few liberties. I understand not everything can be included but when something is rather important like having the guild present or Chani's role change, Alia's role change, etc. I'm looking forward to dune Messiah. I think they will extend the timeline. Anyway. Doesn't matter... It won't be exactly what it was when we read it the first time or the 10th time. Thanks for the update.
they weren’t trained in the weirding way as they were in the books. It was already cemented that at base they were better fighters than the sardaukar based on what Duncan said when he fought a fremen.
fremen were already a well regimented society. even fremen children are trained to kill the wounded after battle and collect their water. its just now they have the emperor's stuff and the means to wage war against the rest of the universe.
I'm coming to terms with the fact, that as a whole, I didn't really like Dune part 2. It's not a bad movie, and there are really cool parts in it, but the story is not for me. Denis's Messiah is going to deviate heavily. I can't see how it won't. Main character plot points can't be there from the books. Chani's whole arc? Alia's whole arc with Duncan? Not if she's 12. I don't like the way the last movie was left and I'm worried ngl.
Yeah, they really screwed up Chani in Villenueve's adaptation. And Kynes, who was her father (they dust mention it in the 1984 version either - who doesn't want Max von Sydow as a dad?!), didn't benefit from an unnecessary gender/race swap (no offense to the actress - she did a fine job). Idk how they're going to navigate Chani in Messiah. No one will like it if Zendaya dies.
The spacing guild was technically introduced at the beginning of Part 1, subtly but technically it was. And the Jihad or Holy War was setup at the end of part 2. And also set up a little in Pauls vision in part 1. The only thing he'll have to introduce is the Ghola and the Face Dancers.
@@loganastrup6870 They had maybe 10 seconds of screen time and were ferenced another 3-4 times. The Jihad has been set up for vastly different reasons than the book though.
@@filippos13 yeah but they’ve technically been introduced though. It’s not like it’ll be an entirely new entity that will have to be explained in the next movie.
Long time Dune fan. I agree with many comments here. After Dune Messiah all the characters are either much older or don't exist anymore. The next movie will need almost complete re-casting or a shipload of makeup! Denis strikes me as a very smart and practical man.
The Alia plot hole is simple. She's already a reverent mother. She already has the knowledge to control her body at a cellular level. All she needs to do is accelerate her aging.
I did not even know that was a "plot hole" until now lol. I mean, I thought that it had already been explained in both the movies and even more so in the books, no?
Alia is pre born, he will speed up her aging growth. You can’t do everything you can in a book to work in a movie. Trying to have a toddler have the acting chops of Alias character doesn’t work on screen. Anya is a brilliant choice for this iteration of Alia. I’m really excited for this movie… Denis has done so much to bring Dune into mainstream. Franks books and stories have never been so popular. I love seeing it !!!!
I’m not sure I want Messiah to be made. Because if you make it and end it the way the book does, then he needs to make Children of Dune, and then the next all the way to Chapterhouse. I just finished the books about a month ago and they are excellent. But the farther you go with them, the harder it will be to make good films of them. I’m on the fence about this one.
@ Regardless of whether it’s a show or film, the more you make, the more likely it is that the director will make a bad project. Denis is 2 for 2. I’d rather he quit while he’s ahead. But, maybe Messiah will be even better. Time will tell.
He'll definitely stop after Messiah. Just looking at his adaptation of Dune he narrowed the focus to mainly be about Paul's journey and Paul is only a proper protagonist in the first two novels.
I can't wait for Villeneuve's Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C Clarke. One of my all time favourite hard scifi novels, I have no doubt this new movie will blow everything out of the water. Clarke is just such a great scifi author, we desperately need a repeat of Kubrick/Clarke cinematic masterpeice of '2001: A Space Odyssey' for the 21st Century👍
@@bf99ls You misunderstand me... I'm saying Villeneuve's Rendezvous could be the 2001 of the 21st Century. I would never want Kubrick's masterpiece to be remade, EVER!
What if… Alia is compressed into Messiah, taking on Scytale’s role as well. Her fate is concluded like Scytale and at the end the kids are born and Paul goes into the desert leaving the empire in Jessica’s in the meantime. Sucks but if I only had one movie to wrap up Paul that’s how I might do it
DV's massive changes to the Dune story ruined Part 2 for me, and now I'm concerned he's going to screw up Rendezvous With Rama, when he gets around to that.
If you look at it in another way, Dune and Dune Messiah were about Paul, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune were about Leto II, while Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune were about the universe after Leto II. Adaptation-wise, it would be easier to have one set of actors and staff for Dune and Dune Messiah because the timeline jump from book to book is not as great as between Book 3 -> 4, and Book 4 -> 5. For Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune, given the timeline and the common set of characters, it would be nice to have a single set of staff and actors work on them when adapting.
I've wondered if one reason he doesn't talk about CoD as part of Paul's arc is also because saying that it is part of his arc is a huge story spoiler. For a movie that would still at best be years away (speaking hypothetically of course), if I were directing and enthused about doing CoD, I'm not sure I'd be broadcasting repeatedly how Paul is also in CoD when the book does not confirm his survival until several hundred pages in.
He’s probably gonna take some of the Jihad scenes from the expanded book Paul of Dune to hopefully show some of the jihad as that’s where I think the action will be, the rest of it will be a lot of political intrigue with lots of dialogue which I’m 1000% here for.
Yep. The Holy War and Paul's reconciliation with Chani could be the focus of Act 1 of the movie and satisfy the audience's expectation for some spectacle. The events of Dune Messiah could be introduced in Act 2 (which would start with the formulation of the plot against Paul) and resolved in Act 3. Dune Messiah is a short novel and I don't think its story really requires more than two-thirds of the movie's run time.
There was another recent interview - and unfortunately I can't recall the source or event - where he was asked about the more 'exotic' aspects of Dune Messiah - and will they feature in his film. And this, for me, was a question that was on my mind - does Villeneuve somehow simplify Messiah to end his run with the films, or does he remain true to the book and open up the potential for future exploration of the Dune universe. Surprisingly, he seemed to favour the latter - he would be keeping the more colourful characters and aspects of Dune Messiah intact, giving other directors more to leverage in possible future adaptations of later books (or the broader Dune universe).
I think Messiah will begin with Paul basically almost all alone. He'll have Alia and Stilgar on his side but he'll be in a loveless marriage with Irulan and he won't even have Chani supporting him. The movie will begin with Chani against Paul. This will emphasize the tragedy of who Paul has become. At some point though Chani will reconcile with Paul. As Paul says "She'll come to understand. I have seen it." How though? I dont know thats for Denis to figure out. But I trust him to tell a great compelling story that will obviously have changes from the book but will still honor the core ideas and themes of Messiah. I think hes done that so far with Dune.
How? I really don’t think it’s hard. She loves him passionately and he loves her. She had an absolutely normal reaction to Paul‘s decision to marry Irulan, but it was a first emotional reaction. Once she looks at it with a bit of distance and gets convinced that Paul will never touch Irulan, why would she not come around (though like in the books it remains an issue for years). If anything, her reaction in the book makes little sense by modern standards.
I'm no great storyteller like Denis, but it seems to me that Act 1 of the movie could consist of the events of the Holy War and Chani reconciling with Paul as it becomes clear to her that (1) his marriage to Irulan is in name only, (2) he is fully entrusting the conduct of the war to Stilgar and the Fedaykin (as illustrated in one or two big set piece battles), and (3) he is channeling the spoils of the war to Arrakis to benefit the Fremen people rather than to Caladan (where Jessica and Gurney have relocated) to enrich and rebuild House Atreides. That would set the stage for Act 2 which would begin with the introduction of the plot against Paul described in Dune Messiah.
I think the revised version of Chani was a great idea, because it's clear to her that he is no longer the boy/man he was, and she can see his changing into a power hungry man, not the boy she fell in love with. It could even be possible that she has the children-since she is already pregnant-at a sietch without him knowing that he even HAS children, and when the film begins, he will meet them for the first time. I don't think that under these conditions their love will be quite the same, and very different from the books. How she is reconciled with the new Muad-dib, remains to be seen.
Alia could still be possessed by the baron but in the story it was so so much sweeter because she is the one who killed him the first time (as a toddler- bad ass) and then she got to kill his ass again later after possession. IDK how he comes back from the changes he has made in regards to getting the same feeling the story gave us, there was so much room IMO for him to change or tweek things and the things he decided to actually change were really odd choices. Will he extend the time line between end of Dune and Messiah, yes I dont think he has any other choice but to do so if he wants any chance at saving the few things FH actually wrote into the book that were solid truths.
I've read all the books multiple times and love them-- all I know is I don't want to see Zendaya ever again. In the films, let Leto II be the son of Princess Irulan and Paul.
Dune Part one and two make my imagination just run wild. I think there will be more movies after the third, because there's now a hunger for more Dune, wich will never be sated, only slowly fade when less visionary directors will make their adaptations of later books. To make God-Emperor of Dune, where to me, there was some pay-off to everything before, as true cinema would be hard, we should be honest about that. It would need to be planned together with Children of Dune and it would need to be done very creativelly, as to not weird out the people who do not yet know of Leto II final form. Maybe Leto II would narrate for 2/3 of the movie and only in the last third will he be fully revealed. Or something like that. I don't know if DV will still have the drive to do it himself, if he does everything before that. Maybe he'll come back 20 years later to finish his career with a last hooray.
I would love to see God Emperor of Dune, Heretics, and Chapter house to be done as series. End the first trilogy as films, and then do the second trilogy as series.
My only question is what happens with Chani after she returns to the desert. The way she stalked out with murder in her eye gave me a definite negative conception going forward. And how will that affect her and Paul's children. Is the death of Leto I going to be addressed and will it even become part of DNV's ideas for Dune: Messiah. I know he's hopping around, but how much of what's canon is going to be changed further. As the late Inga (Teri Garr RIP) would say, "it's a puzzlement !"
Personally, i won't be in theater to see the next Dune movie, Denis Villeneuve has gone too far from the Dune original story for me to want to see it, i will wait to see it in streaming. And according of what you just said messiah wont be messiah.
Yes, his divergence made leads to whole another plot and I am always worried when Hollywood people try to divert too much since they are not better story writers, they are visual artists yes, but usually their "visions" bring in more questions than answers.
@@heskrthmatt I think Bijaz will be cut. Hes really not that needed. Hes almost like a Tom Bombadil lord of the rings character. Works for the books but doesn't work for a movie.
it makes sense to end Paul Atreides with Messiah. Paul is no more with Children of D, it's the Prophet. Main characters are mostly Alia, Leto and Ghanima
The idea of Alia growing so much in 12 years is possible. We know Reverend Mothers have such control over their bodies that they can stop the aging process of their cells. Maybe Alia sacrificed her "childhood" to better help her brother.
Or Denis can just change the setting for Dune Messiah from 12 years after the events of Dune to 16 years after. It's not going to make a difference for 98% of the audience, and I say that as a huge Dune fan who first read Herbert's books 50 years ago. The trickier thing will be to age up Paul, Chani, and Irulan in a convincing way. Make-up can do amazing things but when it's used to attempt to add years to a young actor's face the result often doesn't come across as realistic.
Maybe he'll skim through Messiah and focus more on Children of Dune, however, the children will need to already be born and Chani have a limited role as she's supposed to die at childbirth. Having CoD be more emphasized will line up Alia's age correctly I would guess... 🤔
Well, I think most Dune fans want this next movie to be done right so I say let’s not rush him in my opinion. My next question is is the Benny Jewitt prequel series still happening?
I maintain that Hollywood will make a 4th movie. But Dennis will not direct it. Hollywood likes money, even if they crush the franchise into trite mediocrity.
Wanna mess with the fans? Switch rolls of Chain and the princess. Make the princess have Paul's twins and Chani wanting her and Paul dead. That would actually help with his tampering of the original source. Lol
I would prefer DV wait at least 4yrs for Messiah( l’m curious to know how he addresses the Chani arc due to her departure in previous installment)but it’s all about the loot 💰l guess 🤔
I’m surprised to learn he’s bringing back Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. I figured surely with the time-jump they’d recast. Hopefully they do better with the age makeup than the X-Men Prequels did! 😄
The spice affects aging and in the book it says Paul still looks 18 despite being 30. Aging slows down when you are wealthy and take care of yourself, Paul being the most powerful person in the universe is no exception.
He F'd up badly with the time line among other things. If anything he should have extended it the other way to get Alia older and push Messiah into Children territory.
*spoilers* I think Villeneuve’s adaptation will end with Paul walking off into the desert, just like in Messiah. In a way, it’s the perfect ending to his character arc. We don’t necessarily need to see Paul as The Preacher to know how profoundly he has been changed by his role as Emperor.
Villeneuve has focused on the political aspects of this Fremen revolution. It would not surprise if he linked Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. A revolution corrupted, followed by a great tyranny. Kind of reminds one of the French Revolution.
There will have to be a clear passage of time because of Anya Taylor Joy playing Alia. I maintain that an older, more mature actor needs to play Paul to show the passage of time and Paul's maturity but that's sadly not happening.
I am willing to give DVN the benefit of the doubt that Dune 3 will be a decent cinematic experience, despite how much I dislike his interpretation of Chani and some of the other plot holes he has created for himself.
I don't think she even did a good job portraying this version of Chani. She sticks out like a sore thumb and doesn't at all act like the other Fremen. Like many others have said, she plays a typical sarcastic 21st century California chick.
@@derek96720 She's awful. I was making fun of her acting on the ride home. Zendaya's not a good actress and she's not even pretty. No wonder why Paul marries Irulan.
Please stop nitpicking and complaining about these films not EXACTLY following the tiniest details of Herbert's stories. DV can only work within the time and budget constraints given to him by the studios. He MUST cut/condense/change FH's original novels to some extent. Just like Jackson had to do with his masterpiece adaptation of LOTR. Please, who cares if a character is changed from a toddler to a grown woman in 12 years? Just tweak the story a bit.... make it 22 years instead of 12, or just say that her maturity rate is double that of an average human. Nobody except the most fanatic fanboys and girls will care! The average non-Herbert movie goer certainly won't care, and these movies need millions of these people to pay money to watch the movie!
@rithmantyr The only ones who care are the 10% of movie ticketbuyers who have memorized the text of the novel and are religiously devoted to it. Newsflash!... Hollywood doesn't make movies for you. They make movies for the 90% who just enjoy a great story, with great acting, and great visuals. Lots of brilliant movies have modified the text of the source material or of actual history in order to get a movie made or to make it better. Frank Herbert wasn't a God handing down stone tablets that must not be modified. The movie changes made for a better and more entertaining product for 90% of people. You are in a tiny whiney fussy minority.
Considering the end of the second part, I see no reason for a time jump. The holy war has started, Denis will have to show a battle with some ruling family, maybe House Richese or House Vernius. Meanwhile, as the war is going on, he can outline a conspiracy by The Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and the Tleilaxu. Also, the blue scarf that Chani wore may be an anticipation of her pregnancy (I know Villeneuve changed the meaning, in the book it indicated motherhood and marriage, in the movie it was sign of falling in love), which initiates a reaction from Irulan trying to prevent the birth of children. The only thing we will be deprived of is Alia and Duncan's flirtation. If Denis says that Alia is aging rapidly, just so that Anya can be part of the film, that would be another abomination, completely silly, at least for me. Anya will voice the infant Alia and can appear in dreams. This will cause difficulties in future screen adaptations, primarily because Alia and the twins will be the same age, but I don't think it concerns Denis too much. If he is really going for a 12 year time jump, how will he portray the war and the mending of relations with Chani? In flashback? And Alia won't grow up enough to do the events of the book anyway.
Probably going to compact children of dune and dune messiah into Dune 3. Have Chani was pregnant with the twins already and due to the time setup he can see the unborn as adults c In some ways you could say Paul end cus he disappears into the desert
In my ideal world, the next movie would be called ”Dune: Part 3”, and would join Messiah and Children (otherwise, Anya TJ would be a tragic tease and a waste of talent). Gimme a 3.5 hr movie ! (the minisereries combined messiah and children in about 4,5 hours, so that would be feasible in a GRAND FINALE movie format,, LOTR style)
Translation: The first 2 films were triumphant on every level... and now that the majority of the "IP Obsessed" fan bases from every genre are completely disgusted with almost every franchise at this point... Dune becomes doubly valuable. That said... the woke agenda doesn't change. He has been approached (offered the sun & moon) to do a more "modern" take on the 3rd film... and he's considering it
I think Denis Villeneuve wants to move on from a creativity standpoint. He’s devoted years to the Dune project and it’s likely time to do other things. It’s so difficult to make entertaining cinema from intrenched source material that has so many devotees. One is always in danger of either adhering slavishly to the source and making o boring film or straying too far and alienating the fans of the book series. He’s masterfully threaded that needle to this point and he’d like to finish it off with a strong finale. I can see him doing something smaller and more contemporary after he finishes with Dune.

*The SPICE Must Flow ❗*
There is a natural 12 year timeline break between the Storey in Dune and the start of the storey in Dune Messiah. Paul has to have aged significantly during this period and shifted from success and WAR with the great houses to cynicism after victory. It is therefore essential that if the current cast is to be used then time needs to pass in the real world as well.
The 3rd book in the original series "Children of Dune" carries on a further 9 years later.
3 other books were originally published by Frank Herbert making a total of 6 books:
"God Emperor of Dune" (1981): This book represents the most significant time jump in the series, occurring about 3,500 years after "Children of Dune." It follows the rule of Leto II Atreides, who has transformed into the God Emperor.
DVN is a genius. I’m sure he’ll figure it out and I’m sure it will be great. I’m not worried one bit. Thanks again for a great video.

get off the bath salts. He is lame.
That shit made *NO SENSE!*
@@storkfletcher821 Denis boy did "such" a "good job" with Part 2's ending.
@@wiinterflowers4277 Can you elaborate more? I'm sure I'm going to love an explanation from someone that couldn't even make any sense of it.
I'd love for DVN to continue the whole of Frank Herbert's Dune but I'm sure he'd said in an interview when Dune Part One came out that he wasn't sure how to handle the weirder aspects of the original six novels, and that made him decide only to adapt Dune & Dune: Messiah.
It’s a ten year commitment for a trilogy. It’s a lot.
Another outstanding video Elaine!
Not understanding the Denis hate here. He did a great job with translating such dense material into something both book fans and audiences can like. His changes were overall for the better imo (other than Chani). If anything I was impressed that he included scenes and characters like Margot Fenring
It's good but definitely a speedrun, a lot was left out.
I dont understand why you guys worship him so
much if you love the actual story.
Cue audio clip "oh brother, this guy STINKS!"
I too am at a loss on why Denis wants to end with Messiah. Paul’s journey in Children is so integral to his overall story…
I believe it’s his end he DVN want to move on
Its possible that he will hand the series to a different director after _Messiah,_ probably staying as a producer after that point.
Weird how people think only one director directs a series of films.
@kuribayashi84 Exactly. It's not his property anyway. It's the studios.
Also it's bizarre they won't release extended editions.
But she will, if Villeneuve is true to his source material
It will be a challenge to introduce the Guild, the Gholas, the Tleilax and the Jihad, without setting them up already!
@@loganastrup6870 The big reveal would be Edric. I'm guessing Denis will take his time to get the design and details absolutely perfect.
3 hrs hopefully
Long time Dune fan. I agree with many comments here. After Dune Messiah all the characters are either much older or don't exist anymore. The next movie will need almost complete re-casting or a shipload of makeup! Denis strikes me as a very smart and practical man.
The Alia plot hole is simple. She's already a reverent mother. She already has the knowledge to control her body at a cellular level. All she needs to do is accelerate her aging.
I did not even know that was a "plot hole" until now lol. I mean, I thought that it had already been explained in both the movies and even more so in the books, no?
She's like 16/17 in Messiah. Which is still dicey but it's not 12.
Exactly
She is 15 in Messiah
She accelerates her aging to be the hot ATJ, then maintains it for Children of Dune
They must have made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Happy Diwali elaine
I’m not sure I want Messiah to be made. Because if you make it and end it the way the book does, then he needs to make Children of Dune, and then the next all the way to Chapterhouse. I just finished the books about a month ago and they are excellent. But the farther you go with them, the harder it will be to make good films of them. I’m on the fence about this one.
Have rumors that after Dune 3. Children of Dune will be a big budget tv show not a movie
Rama, a big yes. Remake 2001? An even bigger no!
Hooray.
After Dune part 2 I’m not excited for Messiah at all
I've wondered if one reason he doesn't talk about CoD as part of Paul's arc is also because saying that it is part of his arc is a huge story spoiler. For a movie that would still at best be years away (speaking hypothetically of course), if I were directing and enthused about doing CoD, I'm not sure I'd be broadcasting repeatedly how Paul is also in CoD when the book does not confirm his survival until several hundred pages in.
He directed a couple short films to bridge blade runner and the blade runner sequel, I really hope he does the same for Dune Messiah
Im fine with him taking his time and not revealing too much.
If anything, I'd wish he'd make all books into movies.
Cool. I thought that the second episode was the end of this adaptation.
I think its going to be totally different than the book and not in a good way.
That would set the stage for Act 2 which would begin with the introduction of the plot against Paul described in Dune Messiah.
i love dune
I think the revised version of Chani was a great idea, because it's clear to her that he is no longer the boy/man he was, and she can see his changing into a power hungry man, not the boy she fell in love with. It could even be possible that she has the children-since she is already pregnant-at a sietch without him knowing that he even HAS children, and when the film begins, he will meet them for the first time. I don't think that under these conditions their love will be quite the same, and very different from the books. How she is reconciled with the new Muad-dib, remains to be seen.
I hope one day someone takes on the last 3 books
They will.
Depends if you consider the Preacher is part of Pauls story or is it part of Leto II story.
It is no longer Frank Herbert's Dune, pity
Ever since dune 2, I’ve been concerned about future dunes
Yes, his divergence made leads to whole another plot and I am always worried when Hollywood people try to divert too much since they are not better story writers, they
are visual artists yes, but usually their "visions" bring in more questions than answers.
DVN loves the Dune Lore. I just would like less Chani. My least favorite character & Zendaya imo was over acting least powerful actor in the movie
Don't worry. He's dune it, dune it, and dune it well
Will Jason Momoa return as Duncan?
He should.
Kinda hoping for Peter Dinklage as Bijaz…
That's a great thing about Momoa in that he pretty much doesn't age, guy can play Duncan for the shows also if it comes to that!
@@heskrthmatt I think Bijaz will be cut. Hes really not that needed. Hes almost like a Tom Bombadil lord of the rings character. Works for the books but doesn't work for a movie.

@@loganastrup6870 I really hope we'll get Bijaz, he's just so entertaining. But if needed, that character COULD be melded into Scytale I suppose
it makes sense to end Paul Atreides with Messiah.
Is this the same nerd cookies narrator? very different ambience.
Yeah.
As long as they kill off Zendaya's character early, I'm interested. But if it's another Zendaya-fest... no thanks.
Wouldn't Duncan Idaho be another key character? Interesting that he doesn't mention Idaho in that quote about the actors coming back?
He's incredibly key to the story, yes. He's in almost every chapter of the book.
Maybe he'll skim through Messiah and focus more on Children of Dune, however, the children will need to already be born and Chani have a limited role as she's supposed to die at childbirth. Having CoD be more emphasized will line up Alia's age correctly I would guess... 🤔
Cool.
he needs to stay as close to source material as possible. no more DV revisions!
Well, I think most Dune fans want this next movie to be done right so I say let’s not rush him in my opinion. My next question is is the Benny Jewitt prequel series still happening?
*Rendevous With Villeneuve.*
I maintain that Hollywood will make a 4th movie. But Dennis will not direct it. Hollywood likes money, even if they crush the franchise into trite mediocrity.
I do want DVN to make children of the dune or maybe dip into it through messiah
That Elaine
I'm still trying to figure out how Dune Messiah can be done without Alia.
He also could easily do a bigger time jump
As a reverend mother, Alia has power over her body, her growth rate, hormones, etc. She would naturally choose to become adult sooner.
The should recast. It would open up a new tension
If he is doing Dune Messiah, he will do Children of Dune. They go together.
@@matthewdeancole nope he will turn it over to another director
What will they do with Jessica? She heads back to Calladan, and leaves the Fremen.
He F'd up badly with the time line among other things. If anything he should have extended it the other way to get Alia older and push Messiah into Children territory.
*spoilers*
I think Villeneuve’s adaptation will end with Paul walking off into the desert, just like in Messiah.
A Trilogy Mindset.
I thought Zendaya was not a good choice. She is very wooden, stiff, showed zero passion for Paul.
I think Zendaya did a very good job at portraying this version of Chani, but it’s not book Chani.

Yeah, who cares about a 8year timeskip completetly being ignored and the foundation of Paul and Chani's relationship, right?
@rithmantyr
The only ones who care are the 10% of movie ticketbuyers who have memorized the text of the novel and are religiously devoted to it.
OK Dune Massia will start with a 15-minute montage so it can move forward from the right spot...
Too bad he couldn't have stuck to the books more closely.
Translation:
The first 2 films were triumphant on every level... and now that the majority of the "IP Obsessed" fan bases from every genre are completely disgusted with almost every franchise at this point...
I can see him doing something smaller and more contemporary after he finishes with Dune.
meh... more overlonged desert-stills than anything important from the original. villeneuve is a blender and i despise his "adaptation"
