    We get asked why we use such a large truck to tow our RV. Our good friend Chad Heiser had an accident while traveling on the interstate and his HDT Hauler probably saved him from going over. We got a chance to chat with Chad about the experience and get his opinion regarding towing with an HDT.

      In truck driving school they reiterated over and over again not to swerve off the road. Only bad things can happen. If he’d have taken the hit in the radiator, he’d be only replacing a radiator. Glad no one was injured!

      Yep. Late reaction which can happen to all of us, but regardless of what is pulling the pinbox, that single attach point is the same. This was not a stopping issue and what happens if just full brakes are applied and straight ahead maintained?

      @@hnh1877 I'm not gonna bash him...he's not a professional driver. So I'll give him a break...he did what most "untrained" people would do. But when he said he didn't know what was beside him...tells me he was not paying attention and had tunnel vision. You absolutely need to know what is in your "zone" at all times. I tell people to try your best to keep others out of your donut..you being the donut. 4 million miles accident and ticket free...I feel like I know just a little bit about safety. From what I saw, it wasn't him hitting the grass that hurt him, watch it again, you'll see a big cement drain culvert he hit dead square. That's what absolutely tore his rig to shreds top to bottom end to end. This is why you have to do your diligence to keep on the pavement, as you may not see what the grass and ditch is hiding. Driving is like other things, you need training to be safe..just like police need consistent training, driving a semi is no different. I'm glad he is safe and okay. His camper can be replaced, he can't. Expensive lesson tho...

    Hello folks. Great video. Glad everyone is ok especially your friend. It's unfortunate that he had to experience that on the highway but here are some very important words of advice. I am a Class A Professional Truck Driver. I've been Trucking since 1999. Well, first and foremost always do a "Pre-Trip" on your (Rig and Trailer). There are some cool UA-cam videos that can help learning that. But the main reason for commenting is to tell you folks to always stay conscious of your mirrors especially the lane of travel next to you or on either side using your peripheral view. Always remember to look in both "mirrors every 8 seconds" and always keep a mental note of vehicles (types and sizes) behind you, beside you, in front and if possible on opposite side of road/highway.
    The reason I say this is because if the KW Driver (your friend) would have made these mental and visual notes and stayed on his mirrors every 8 seconds or less he could have been prepared to maneuver to the left lane because he would have been aware if any vehicles were in that lane of travel. Always leave yourself an escape route (this doesn't mean to swerve hard). And never ever allow a vehicle to ride beside you. Either you pass or slow down and let them pass. You have to always keep those lanes beside you clear if all possible at all times. Remember that you are in a bigger vehicle. You are like the big brother. You can't screw up because everyone depends on you. The rule of thumb and the safest thing to do is keep that truck straight (going forward) no matter what's in front of you and I mean no matter what. Swerving that big rig could cause a roll over very easily and that could be catastrophic to you, your wife and to other motorist vehicles next to you with families in them.
    Your friend was extremely lucky that he did not flip that truck on it's side. Weight had nothing to do with it. That was pure luck that it stayed upright. Trust me. I've seen empty trailer's GVWR at 9,000 pounds flip a semi over all do to the angle and speed factor. Anyways I don't want you guys to think that your truck is unflippable. Respect the machine. God bless and take care. Be safe and drive smart.❤️🙏✌️

    Well, we are selling our Kenworth T680 and downsizing to a 2022 Ford F450 if and when it ever comes in. Too many campgrounds just can’t handle 65 feet in length , and frankly a few of them don’t want us on their property anyway. My dad was a trucker until about 10 years ago. As a kid, I rode with him several times and the comfort of a semi is night and day different. You almost feel like you're on a boat instead of a road with the air suspension, air ride cab and air ride seats. You just bob up and down instead of feeling jolted most of the time. We covered over 600 miles in a day and sure, at 14, I was sick of being in a vehicle, but it didn't feel near as bad as the back seat of the pickup going half that distance.

    As one of many who live full time in a 5th wheel RV I would love to have a HDT to pull my RV, but in the 7 years we have owned our RV, I only moved it 2 times, one less than a mile and the other was less than a block to a new space. So our one ton ford was it. If I was going to do more over the road pulling then I would have a HDT! I see all the comments about swerving but I think you did a damn good job driving that rig! If you saw the tire sooner you would have probably not gone off the road but once you did, you did a fantastic job of keeping the wheel straight and not pulling back left in a panic.
    A lot of students wreck their cars trying to pull back on the track in a panic instead of going straight off and regaining control. A+ for not rolling that rig over and freaking out during the ride! 👏

I refuse to offer unsolicited advice as every situation is different. If you weren't there driving the woulda, shoulda, coulda's mean nothing. My only question is, where did the tire come from? Did a opposite direction vehicle lose it or maybe fall off the back of a ranchers flat bed pick up? Or God forbid was some idiot setting in the trees and pick them to send it out in front of? So glad they are safe. Thank you.

    In a split second, you have to decide. A split second!! Choices are, hit the tire/wheel & risk it coming through the windshield or the tire bouncing off you into another vehicle or coming out the other end into the car behind you, 2nd choice, move into the left lane & although you are somewhat aware at all times what’s there, there are blind spots & someone could be there & then you would have more than one vehicle in an accident, or choice 3, try to swerve right and Miss tire & try to stay on the road. I think Chad chose well & I would have done the same. Trailers and even trucks can be replaced, but his actions did not involve other motorist. BRAVO 👏

As I got closer he quickly turned into left lane, slammed on brakes and took illegal u-turn. I changed to right lane quickly and the wiggle pushed me into shoulder slightly. All this happened in a blink of an eye at 65 to 70 mph. I"m happy with F-450. It works for me. Not sure the semi would have done better as I switched lanes much quicker then this guy and I kept it on the road. The only advise I would give here is trust those brakes. I wasn’t there so I can’t say what you should of done but throwing yourself off the road from what I could see looks terrifying. And it sucks because the ding dong on the other side of the road probably threw a spare on and kept going with no care in the world other than needing a new wheel. Those big trucks with a light trailer have solid breaking power. Idk how fast you were going either which would definitely change some things. Glad you’re safe and glad you didn’t swerve into lanes that’s probably the worst idea may of been much worse. Dude..I've had 450s too..but old iron or not, you are never going to compete with a semi...that 450 has the exact same running gear and engine as a 350. Ford's 450 does have impressive tow numbers but don't be silly to think it's anywhere near what a semi is, gadgets or no gadgets. You don't want to drive a semi anymore...cool...that's your decision. But others want safety and longevity. Your opinion on others choices of tow vehicle is irrelevant. So you choose what's best for you and let others choose what's best for them.

      @TonyBenton0728 2 роки тому

      @@showcasecharlie11 And you opinion is irrelevant also. As I said if you feel safe with a semi truck that’s fine. In the RV world you won’t but the same miles on as you would in a commercial operation. So longevity is no factor. I see where they drive and if you as Jim it won’t be as many miles as you think. And if semi trucks were that popular you would see them everywhere. Because they can’t get into the vast majority of the the RV parks and the hassle of having to have a smart car or something else to get around. Most people don’t want to deal with that. You and others in the HDT community enjoy that because you get the attention. Of the novelty. Also your semi truck in general only tow about one half the weight as done in commercial operation. Their rigs gross weight is 24,000 lbs. That’s half as much I hauled with tankers. The only RV that would weigh that much might be a custom spacecraft on a semi trailer chassis. And I just saw one in Reno Nv. last week. Being pulled by a single axle Volvo. And a single axle can not gross 80,000 lbs.

    I have seen these trailers behind PUs. The regular PU looks so small. Everything you said about distance that you can go between service on those class 8 Truck's, they are made to go down Freeways hauling a 52 foot trailer. I just think of Dump trucks full of gravel, rock. They go day in day out, full loads. Just think of wt. In dump box. One question I have to ask. What about CDL license. Medical certificate. Mine is every year because of my BP. Can you talk about what is required on those class 8 Truck's, for the RV community, the License issues with Driving. I keep mine current because I have a 1971 SeaGrave Fire Engine, Restoration project
    that old has Airbrakes. Tell you a story, had a AIR leak in one can. Was able to get back to shop with leak, still drive above the 60 pounds. It never went below 90. Even with leak. It wt. Is 35000 pound, 750 gallon water tank. It is so much funnier to drive than my 1 Ton PU. And boy everything you said about STOPPING. Boy pulling my 6500 pound 26 foot boat with my PU. I have had to make those quick STOPS. Everything and I mean everything you say is correct. That boat is heavy full of 85 gallon of fuel. They never add that fuel and water tank into wt. On pulling RV or Boats.
