Hi guys.... Our Western star is set up very similar to the inside of your Volvo. We had ours customized for us back in 07 as well.. Except we are truly set up for heavy haul..(200k)... We elected to get a bed at the very tip top to where we could sleep side-by-side and leave the dinette table set up all the time... The extra tanks underneath is a great idea... We have a Honda 7000 set up like Dave and Karen's however you are correct about the APU being a whole lot louder... Thank you so much for the video... Stay safe...J&A
Hey J&A, good to hear from you again. That sounds very cool on the top bunk mod. Great idea. We really enjoy the dinette and use it daily while on the road. Your truck is definitely set up for heavy loads...glad we don't have to pay the fuel costs for 200K loads though! LOL. Appreciate the comment and hope to see you guys sometime on the road. Safe travels. Aloha
@@bigtruckbigtravels lol...back when we were hauling heavy...we would get 1.5 to 3 mpg...now..we are around 5.5 to 8 depending on terrain..( Mountains )..looking forward to seeing you guys...🙋♀️🙋♂️
I love how you keep the generator locked away in a ventilated box and it's quiet. Well done. You people are considerate RV'ers. I like that. A loud generator in a national forest camp ground would piss campers off.
You guys have quickly become a favorite for us. What a cool ‘Truck-umentary’ David! Danette and I loved seeing how all of this came together. We always enjoy 'finding Mickey' in your videos. Safe travels you two!
Thank you so much. We truly appreciate that comment. We enjoy sharing our travels and experiences as fulltime RVers and glad to have you guys along on the journey.
Great idea with the water tank and the black/ gray tank mounted to Voyager used as a big „honey wagon“ so you don’t have to move the 5th wheel / O‘Ryan - great video!
That's exactly right! It's so much easier and more convenient. And it doesn't waste any space either! Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
The Volvo is really laid out nice and high quality. Awesome that 2000 W generator can be closed off and quiet and even run Orion if need be plus much cheaper to run then the big generator. Such a nice set up. The guys really did a great job.
Thank you very much. A little bit of thought and a lot of experience went into the plans of Voyager. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Thank you. We asked a lot of questions and thought about what we wanted in a truck. It turned out great. Appreciate your comments and your time watching the channel. 😃
Wow! Thank you very much. I wasn't sure if I should do this one since it's not really about our travels but I thought that a lot of people would find this interesting and helpful with any modifications they might be thinking of for their respective situation. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
We’re watching your episode in Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio. Have you visited Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio and Turkey Run State Park in Indiana? You will be amazed by the incredible rock formations in these parks. There are many hikes to experience the beauty in both parks. You will not be disappointed! We are from Michigan and these are two of our favorite Midwest parks.
Yes, Chuck, there are some longer units out there but their trailers are significantly less weight (by half at least) and with a longer bed I worry about stability with our trailer. A Jeep would be nice in some instances but the Smart is very convenient as well. We really like the tanks as it keeps us from having to move Orion if we need to dump and fill. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Hello, I want to say I really enjoy watching you guys traveling. you go places That I would never see in my lifetime and it's as if I'm traveling with you. you guys are Entertaining. And you show and tell lots of interesting places you have traveled to. and you are funny too. and you have a beautiful traveling rig and living space. stay safe and keep enjoying you adventures!!!
Very nice truck. I told you on Facebook that my wife and I are planning on getting the same setup you guys have. So thanks so much for the in depth information.
When I first saw this rig I wondered why it had tandem rear axles... then I read the SpaceCraft weight specs, and it made sense. The explanation of the history is appreciated. I'll note that the fifth wheel is positioned unusually far rearward, due to the car deck. As delivered the fifth wheel was over the axle, which is normal. The first deck moved the hitch back to make space for the car, and the second deck placed the fifth wheel roughly over the rearmost axle instead of midway between the axles as usual. The new configuration is suitable for this use, but wouldn't work for a heavier commercial trailer. The smaller fifth-wheel hitches, as used for RVs and lighter commercial trailers, go up to about 30,000 pounds of trailer weight, which is the range covered by the SAE J2638 standard. They can typically handle up to 7,500 pounds of pin weight - not enough as explained in the video - but even the total trailer weight capacity would not be suitable for the SpaceCraft. Both RV and many commercial fifth-wheels use the 2" (nominal) king pin size, but there is a higher-capacity 3.5" size available for heavier applications. I assume that while this is a commercial truck fifth-wheel, it is still the 2" size, and it could be used to tow more conventional fifth-wheel RV trailers. If I understand the history, remarks, and images correctly, the truck was originally a 4X2 and had a idler (non-driven) tag axle added for load capacity, making it a 6X2. As long as it is never driven on ice, snow, or mud, I suppose that's adequate; it's certainly cheaper than a 6X4.
You are correct, Brian. We were going to make the additional axle a drive (6x4) but after discussing with some friends, decided on just a tag axle. That was a mistake. Our gut told us to configure as a 6x4 but we didn't and should have. I guess the better mileage is a consolation but had we to do it over again, it would be a twin screw set up. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Great Rig. In Palm Beach County (PBC) Florida they considered this a conversion and the county campgrounds are so stupid for not accepting it. Only if you have RVIA cert. Happened to me since I started living here once again. In Orange County FL they allow it even car/truck camping. Heads up when you are in PBC not to stay in the county campgrounds w/o the RVIA Cert. I love that the car fits up there. So convenient. I hope you can use the rig for years to come!!!
Thank you. We plan to be in it for many years. We've stayed just north of PBC at a county park but they were fine with our unit. So far, everyone has been great about accepting us and we have had zero issues with staying at campgrounds...the only issue is our size! But in 8 years of fulltime travel, our size has never prevented us from going where we want to go. Appreciate the info and thanks for watching.
@@bigtruckbigtravels Now that I realized they will accept you because you are indeed pulling an RV. I was focused more in the Semi Trailer aspect. Unless you can't fit which I think you will.
I'm glad you shared the mystery of your HDT looking differently in pictures. Even more changes it underwent that I would never have picked up on probably. Definitely a beast and a comfortable one at that. Good to see you both again.
Thanks, it has definitely undergone some modifications and changes over the years. It's really nice for traveling and we love it when we boondock too. It is a beast! Appreciate your time watching the channel. 😊😎
Hey, we live right by Kings Canyon National Park! LOVE your tshirt. My husband has several of The Mountains are Calling tshirts. Just found your channel, you have an amazing set up!!
Thanks, Cheryl. We love it and really enjoyed our trip out to Kings & Sequoia. The t-shirt "spoke" to me so I had to get it! Beautiful area and the drive down into Kings is amazing. Appreciate the comment. 😊
Very informative video on how you customized the Volvo to your needs. And how you explained the purpose and functionality of it. Also what you had to do in your state Can’t wait to see what’s next!
I love the Volvo 780. The bed is amazing with all those hidden features that make extended boondocking much more pleasant. So far I adapted two Sondra specials in my new home. 1) Master Kill switch ⚡⚡ 😂for the computer media center. 2) Upgraded the electric water kettle to 2.5 Liters because the Gas Heater is upstairs far away from the galley. Saving money watching your videos. Yes my Bose sound system moves with me too when I can live in mobile home.
We love it, Hans, that you can glean some useful tips from our experience. That's very cool and makes us feel very good. Thank you for sharing with us. The Volvo mods do make boondocking much more pleasant. Appreciate your comment and your time watching the channel. Aloha

@@bigtruckbigtravels thanks David. Jill and I are suckers for Southern California. You and Sondra travel safe please. We really enjoy the channel sir!!!
Hope the last comment came through (sorry about length) but that is about all I can contribute . You will be able to figure out the rest . When do you head off to Alaska ?
Beautiful setup. I think a big part of why you don't get pulled over is because it looks like an RV, with the matching paint and graphics. If the Rig was a completely different color than the RV it may look like you are hauling it commercially or delivering it somewhere.
I never realized until you said it that your truck has a dead tag axle. Can you dump the air on just the tag axle? I drove a few light weight dump trucks and a log truck with a tag axle and always hated them because is was so easy to get stuck empty or loaded. You do a good job boondocking and not getting stuck. I would want a live tandem with a locking power divider and locking diffs in both rears to offroad. Your bed design is one of the best!
We were not thinking Carl, when we had the axle added. I could have had power or lift to it but I told them that a "dead" axle was fine. It should have had power to it but we're looking into options. It's always a challenge to not get stuck but so far we're doing ok. Appreciate your comments and thanks for watching the channel. 😊
That truck was easily close to 175-200K new. Someone hit the lottery in South Carolina. My wife are close to you guys ages and we live very comfortable, and traveling is a burdensome hobby for us since I drove a semi for 41 years and retired.
Purchased new in 2015 and with the bed built and installed, our truck was $5K less than your low range. Purchased today, that truck exceeds your upper range. We enjoy RV travel and this lifestyle so it's not hard work...yet. At some point, it might be but until then we will keep rolling down the road. Thanks for watching the channel and your comments are appreciated. Also, thanks for your 41 years of keeping America rolling.
DOT rules say they only pertain to commercial, so once they check your plate is not commercial DOT will not care. A State Trooper may care but they are usually busy enough to not look for work. Stay safe and healthy.
We are from San Antonio. Did you go to your local DMV without an appointment ? When I got my Class B non-commercial, the staff was not aware of the Class A non-commercial. Sounded like you had to work with the staff to create a written test. I had to take the Class B commercial written test. We like your channel. Thanks.
We had to make an appointment for the road test. We waited 2 weeks. At the time, they were aware of the Class A non-commercial endorsement but that was 8 years ago. They had a standard test for this at the time but it was also done in Livingston and they were aware of Escapees members needing to do this.
Hello from the UK!! Another great video. Two questions. When would you need the beds in the cab - is it for long travel days? Second, have you considered using nylon plates on the 5th wheel (Trailer hitch) rather than grease?
Hello to the UK! We use the bunk beds when we camp in the truck or on the rare occasion when we are doing a long travel day and one of us sleeps while the other drives. I tried using the nylon plate but my tolerance is so tight between the hitch and pin that the jaws wouldn't close to fully engage and lock. Great question. I wish I could use the nylon plate.
Awesome truck, and built with a lot of thought and features. Hardware/software questions: Hardware - What are service intervals, costs, and fuel mileage numbers? I imagine oil/filter changes are longer intervals (20K miles?...), probably cost around $300 per visit for an oil change?, and mpg's are 8-10 depending on a lot of things? Software - You went quick inside, what are you using for navigation and communication? Apple Maps on your phone, or a dedicated GPS unit (Garmin or Rand McNally)? And, for comms? I'm a radio guy, so I'm interested in CB and Ham radio, and monitor/use both while traveling... along with a Garmin inReach mini so others can track my travels and keep in touch when I'm out of cell range. Enjoyed the tour, and thank you for sharing. Cheers! Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL
Hey Pete, we have a regular CB radio and really only use it around large cities to check on any congestion or accidents. We have our truck serviced annually (usually in December), so the mileage is always between 20K - 24K miles and the cost runs about $400-$500 and that includes oil change and all the filters changed (oil, fuel and fuel/water separator). Our trailer is 42K lbs so we get about 6.8 mpg to 7.2 mpg. Our navigation is through two GPS units: a Garmin RV GPS and a Rand McNally Trucker unit. We also use a Rand McNally Trucker Road Atlas which has all the STAA approved routes listed, we use that as a check to the GPS units. Plus, we'll be on Google maps during the trip to insure some routing as well. I think the inReach is a good idea. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
@@bigtruckbigtravels Right on and thank you for the info. Radio's can be useful, service work is typical, and mapping is as easy or complicated as you want to make it. I use Apple Maps, and then Gaia when off-road. My wife loves paper maps, and every year I go to a truck stop and buy her a Rand McNally Atlas for Christmas. She writes, scribbles, circles and makes notes on it during every trip we take. Loves it every year, then stores that "edition" for reference when we want to go back and review a trip for a future visit. The inReach is a very specific tool that can be useful depending on how you use it. Driving Interstates with cell reception the whole way... nope, not worth it. Going on State or County roads, and ultimately ending up stopping and/or boondocking in an area with no cell reception, and wanting to keep in touch with others, then absolutely, yes. Leave the rig and go walking/hiking/biking, if out of cell range, absolutely, yes. Good to chat with you guys. My comments might be "long winded" but I type like I would talk to you around a campfire, asking questions and sharing ideas. That high school typing class in the '80's is really paying off I guess... lol. Peace and cheers! Pete
Lol... thank you. It works for us and after 8 years it still does a great job and makes our life on the road easier. Thanks for the comment and we appreciate your time watching the channel. 😃
Enjoy your videos so much! I used to drive a 9-speed that had to be double-clutched back in the 90's (automatic transmissions were uncommon). I never drove a Volvo but they were considered top of the line back then. I was curious what type of transmission your Volvo has if you don't mind me asking?
Wow! Scott, a double clutcher! We have it easy with our Volvo. It is an i-Shift full automatic transmission with 12 speeds. 11th is geared from 54 mph to 61 mph and a direct drive (1:1 ratio) which is great for driving in California with 55 mph speeds. Overdrive is 12th gear. At 63 mph it cruises at 1100 rpm's. It's a D13 engine with 500 hp and 1700 ft lbs. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
@Big Truck Big Travels is it the AT series single-clutch transmission or the SO series dual-clutch? Both are 12-speeds which shift automatically, but internally they work differently.
@@bigtruckbigtravels Thanks. I realize that you don't have any heavy truck experience for comparison, but how do you find the transmission behaviour - does it shift smoothly, and at appropriate times?
@brianb-p6586 you're correct. My only experience is with our truck but it is very smooth and intuitive. If on a hill and loaded it will start on 1st or 2nd depending on the grade of the hill. But if on level ground and no load it will start in 5th and skip gears. Loaded and level usually starts in 3rd and will skip gears depending on how much I get into the throttle. Love it. No issues.
Wow what a great rig does the extra axle have brakes or is it free wheeling I don't see any air hoses going to the trailer or electric maybe I mis it take care happy camping
Thank you. The extra axle is a tag with no power to it but it does have air bags for suspension and disc air brakes. The trailer has air suspension and air brakes just like a commercial semi-trailer.
I am so happy to have seen this video as David answered a lot of my questions. A 2000 watt generator l never thought they could be that powerful. If l may, where you two originally from?
It is amazing, Linda, what you can do on 2000 watts! We're both from out west but lived and worked in the Carolinas for years. Nice area and we never lived up north...much too cold for our liking for sure. Thank you for watching and being apart of our journey. 😊😍
Thanks, Kevin. Using the truck to haul water and waste really increases our boondocking enjoyment. Appreciate your comments and your time watching the channel. 😃
Great question. We do not have a video on that. LOL. When we started this channel last April, we didn't think that anyone would be interested in "our story". We weren't even sure about starting the channel but we felt that it was a way to give back to the community and our sharing might help others. We may do a video at some point.... Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
The RV/sleeper part of the truck seems like an expensive redundancy, given that it exists only to tow an RV trailer that has far better versions of everything in it. I suppose the inconvenience of using a trailer that isn't functional without the slides out explains this.
Hi Brian, very astute observations from the video. The sleeper "condo" cab for the truck is for a few reasons: 1) we wanted the ability to camp in the truck of we couldn't get the trailer in to a campsite which we've done at a few places including Yellowstone. On a few occasions, we've also slept in it when our trailer was in for repairs and we couldn't stay in it such as at MorRyde several years ago with our first trailer and while we were having some paint done up in Iowa. 2) This cab also affords us the lower bunk as a dinette which we use 95% of the time in this configuration so we can have our lunch while on the road. Also being a little longer wheelbase gives us a better ride but does limit us on places we can fit. Always a compromise but so far, it's not prevented us from going where we want to go. Thanks for the comment. 😃
Greetings from Michigan 🙂 I'm a retired truck driver and have a 40 ft toy hauler with a 1995 volvo gmc truck I purchased the rig from a friend of mine just before he passed away. I'm trying to jump through hoops with the d m v to get it retitled as a RV my biggest issue is insurance can you touch on that subject in a future video ? Thank you
Hey Doug, we want to get to the UP in the near future. I've heard it's very nice up there. Regarding your title efforts, each state is different on requirements but I can tell you that most DMV's don't understand a semi-truck for personal use to tow a fifth wheel. The key is to get with an experienced DMV associate and have pictures of the unit. Explain to them what you are doing and usually that will work. You may also want to call a supervisor ahead of time to explain and get a "pre-approval" or at least an understanding on their part. Sometime it's smooth but most times it's not. A lot of times it depends on the DMV associate and their experience. I hope that helps.
Thanks for the video. My question is on the commercial hitch, most videos I’ve seen say you can’t use them because you’ll twist your frame on the RV,do you think they’re right. I’m a Truck driver. I have a 2022 VNL860 .
I wouldn't recommend using a commercial hitch on a production trailer. Our SpaceCraft is based on a semi-trailer chassis and thus has a steel plate welded to the upper frame deck where the pin is welded. It's built to be hauled with a commercial hitch. Plus, our pin weight of 13K lbs would crush any RV hitch out there. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Since you live in Texas, why does Orion have a Montana license plate? Do you have it registered in Kalispell? I'm enjoying your detailed videos on Orion and Voyager!
We are domiciled out of Texas but we live on the road. Yes, we're registered out of Kalispell for insurance purposes. MT is more flexible for our type of rig.
Hey I was just your neighbor in eustis where you filmed this! I have a question- if you meet your states cdl requirements (or lack thereof) can you operate in other states where the requirements are more? In NH I do not believe id need any special endorsements, but it sounds like in Texas I would... do you know how that works?
Yes, all states have reciprocal agreements on licensing requirements for personal vehicles. If you are legal in your domicile state (the state where you live) then you are free to roam the other 49 states and Canada...and Mexico if you so desire. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Does Sondra have her CDL as well?? You kept saying “we” when you were talking about taking the test for it.. I can’t imagine trying to drive your rig! I’m not allowed to drive pulling our 27 ft travel trailer! 😂
She does have her Class A non-commercial endorsement just like I do and she drives the Big Rig too! She never drove our 27 ft travel trailer either in 25 years of camping but she likes driving the truck and trailer now. She feels safer now, Richelle. Thanks for the comment and great question. 😎
awsome. i used to cdl. truck doubles. and thousand trails fulltime. i wonder what your fuel capacity is , i had 300 gal. hopefully both drive axles are drive air locking hubs, shocking how easy these trucks get stuck🤔i also love having eight ball on steering wheel really helps😎🌴 love the build
Thank you. We have 250 gal fuel capacity since we have the bed with storage but not tandem drives, only a drive and tag. The drives lock but it is amazing how easy these big trucks get stuck! Wish we would have had tandem drives....thanks for watching the channel.
It's very comfortable. No CDL required since it's a private truck. Out of Texas, we need a Class A non-commercial endorsement on the license. No medical. Thanks
It was geometry and us trying to find a happy median between overall length, storage and maneuverability. If the hitch is moved forward then the rear of the truck must be shorter, losing storage boxes. If the trailer overhang is longer to accommodate a longer truck then the basement storage is eliminated by the front Jack's. Also, the further forward the hitch moves then the trailer doesn't maneuver as well. We tried to strike a balance. Thanks for the comment. 😃
Actually, Thomas, in 8 years of fulltiming, we have never been turned away from an RV park. We call ahead and make sure they know what type of rig we have and we're very carefull to be good RV stewards by trying to not put our tires where they don't belong! 🤔😂🤣😊
Hey, appreciate the comments. If you'd look at the last several videos you'd see we're in Alaska for the next 5 months. Where are you? We've been going for 3 weeks with 5 days at hookup campgrounds. The rest is boondocking camping. Enjoy your summer.
Lol... does it show?!? Yes, we are definitely Star Trek fans. Our first trailer was a DRV Houston (as in we gave a problem), so the theme just fits. Thanks for the comments. 😃
I love the look of the little microwave. What is it and what to you think about it? Is it worth while? I am in Oregon and to my knowledge no extra license required for large RV's but I am a believer that there should be. Too many people with large RV's that do not know how to drive them. My current combined length is 61 feet with generator rack.
We use the microwave in the truck nearly every time we travel which is weekly. It's a great appliance for heating up lunch and has served us well for 9 years.
Our DRV Houston was nice and we loved the floorplan which was very similar to our SpaceCraft. There were improvements we wanted to make that the DRV couldn't handle due to space and weight (bigger tanks, more batteries, more solar and more carrying capacity. We really enjoyed the DRV and would still be in it if it weren't for those improvements. Also, the amount of miles we put on the trailer is much more than a "normal" RVer, so we also felt that the trailer would not hold up to that kind of mileage. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
OH, I forgot but the MorRyde IS was very nice. It really smoothed out the ride on the trailer and is a true independent suspension system which works great. They only had 8K lbs axle ratings when we had it but I think they have increased that to either 9K or 10K.
It has to do with titling your HDT as a motorhome. Lots of people do it by meeting 6 of 8 requirements. My feelings on it are that it's not "right" and it's a truck not a motorhome because it bears a load on its frame. Decided not to get into it. That's all. Thanks for the comment. 😃
looking for HDT and I guess it’s gotta have a sink in the refrigerator in there to be called an RV in Massachusetts. How do you buy a truck with it already in or do you get to install it yourself?OK
We ordered ours from the factory that way but you'll need to install yourself. Very few out there with sinks. I think Volvo stopped offering as an option.
I was a truck driver and owner for 37 years. I wondering how much the registration and insurance for something like this. I was based on California and in the later years the tractor registration was about $1,300 per year and the insurance was around $7,000. I hope your not paying anything like that
Hey Ron, definitely not that much. $950/yr insurance and about $400 on the tags/registration. It's titled as a private truck so we stay out of the commercial tier. Thank goodness. Appreciate your comments and your time watching the channel. 😃
Great question, Ted. I tried on day 1 but the tolerances are so tight between the pin and the hitch plate that a 1/8" teflon plate prevents the jaws from locking! Grrrr...so grease it is.
Hi and great question. No. Since it's titled as a private truck then we don't need to stop at weigh stations. We obey all truck speed limits and weight/size restrictions as posted but no weigh stations.
Yeah, we did... we wanted it but all our "friends and associates" who had trucks said..."awww, you don't need that!" We should have gone with our gut...
Definitely a lot of custom features even though the Volvo is "standard" except for all our options. All told, we were in it for about $170K but it's a 2016 truck so they are a little more now. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Actually, Jack, we do use the fridge in the truck when our lunch requires refrigeration. If it's frozen then we place it on the table to let it thaw a bit before lunch. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate you coming along on the journey.
South Carolina requires Class A CDL or Class F Non CDL to drive a truck like this. Class E would be RV's that are only a single unit. Class F is RV's with a trailer.
Don't worry about the haters, they're everywhere, some of them even hate the air they breathe. That's an awesome build, like how you put the fresh water tank and waste tank on the semi gives me great ideas for mine. What's the verbiage you use to persuade the insurance company to give you coverage, and what company are you using? You might have covered it on a different video, but I'm pretty new to your channel.
Thanks for the words of encouragement. We are an RV and insured through National General. I don't know if they are doing any new policies, but we've been with them for 8 years. We have spotless driving records which help but they were definitely hesitant in the beginning. Our agent really helped a lot, BSX Insurance in Texas, Dianne (800)736-5622 Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
Several reasons, Glenn. 1) Safety - cab is all steel, no fiberglass, Volvo is world renowned for the safest truck. 2) Interior layout with the "workstation/dinette" which suited our travel style. At the time, Volvo was the only truck with this layout. 3) The interior was the most quiet of any other manufacturer. 4) iShift automatic transmission. At the time, it was the most advanced and reliable auto trans in a semi-truck and we wanted the auto transmission. Hope this helps.
Imagine an eCascadia electric Freightliner being powered by a giant rooftop solar system. That’s what I want to build. Then I wouldn’t be reliant on outside fuel.
Great question, Christian- We have Montana plates to simplify our insurance situation as we do presentations at HDT rallies on a volunteer basis (from time to time) as well as our "normal retirement" travel tours. Since we fulltime in our RV (no stick and brick) then it's important to make that distinction as we have no "physical" homebase as such. Appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching the channel. 😊😎
Hey, Brad. Money helps but you also need vision, planning and a desire to make the changes to see it through to fruition. We really enjoy boondocking and this helps us achieve our goal and easier so we don't have to move the whole rig to dump and fill. Thanks for the comment. 😃

Basically, you are correct, Kenneth. But it has been modified to be a great fulltime truck...and might I say, most "fleet" drivers would love to drive it. Thanks for the comment.

A Voyager that would make Janeway proud! Your Texan customizer did a spectacular job.
Thank you. We're really happy with the customization that was done.
I think you are both special. Thank you for sharing your journeys..

I like that you did not do any trendy designs inside. This unit will flow through the years and not be dated.
Thank you. Lol...I guess we did that because we're not real trendy ourselves! 🤔😉🤣 Appreciate the comments.
@@bigtruckbigtravels that is smart! You would be ripping it apart in a few years. Your taste is timeless.
One of the best planned and thought out HDT builds I’ve seen. What an awesome set up!
Thank you. We asked a lot of questions and thought about what we wanted in a truck. It turned out great. Appreciate your comments and your time watching the channel. 😃
This is one of the best videos from you all! GREAT
Nice. Did not make it to Hocking Hills but next time! Hope to be in the UP next year!
Loved the tour of Voyager . 😊
Thanks. Voyager deserves a little love now and then!
Love your tour
Really nice! Great addition with the tanks and storage. I’ve saw a few with longer beds that can carry a Jeep.

Very nice truck. I told you on Facebook that my wife and I are planning on getting the same setup you guys have. So thanks so much for the in depth information.
Our pleasure, Brian! Hope it helps and thanks for watching the channel.

We cross the border on April 27th and should be back in the lower 48 on October 1st. Thank you for the comments.
Beautiful setup. I think a big part of why you don't get pulled over is because it looks like an RV, with the matching paint and graphics. If the Rig was a completely different color than the RV it may look like you are hauling it commercially or delivering it somewhere.
Thank you. That was one reason why we wanted it to match... plus we like it! Lol. Appreciate your comments and your time watching the channel. 😃
Oh my word I think a just saw this exact truck, had the small blue car and everything

We are from San Antonio. Did you go to your local DMV without an appointment ? When I got my Class B non-commercial, the staff was not aware of the Class A non-commercial.

Very nice truck.
Thanks, Timmy. It's really comfortable and super useful for our needs. Appreciate your time watching the channel. 😃
Pete

@@brianb-p6586 I believe it's the AT version, an automated manual transmission for regular duty use.
Hi guys. Thanks for your very interesting videos. I'm thinking of taking a ride around Alaska in my RV. I have a few questions, can you help me?

I hate to ask but.. Is there a video on your back ground. What you all did for a living..Etc.
Wow all those things I could have used OTR. Do you have to have a CDL to drive the tractor?
It's very comfortable. No CDL required since it's a private truck. Out of Texas, we need a Class A non-commercial endorsement on the license. No medical. Thanks
Why did you choose to put the hitch behind both axles and not put it directly over at least one of them?
It was geometry and us trying to find a happy median between overall length, storage and maneuverability. If the hitch is moved forward then the rear of the truck must be shorter, losing storage boxes. If the trailer overhang is longer to accommodate a longer truck then the basement storage is eliminated by the front Jack's. Also, the further forward the hitch moves then the trailer doesn't maneuver as well. We tried to strike a balance. Thanks for the comment. 😃
Imagine a lot of RV parts won't allow you in there with that tractor and the trailer? Just asking
Actually, Thomas, in 8 years of fulltiming, we have never been turned away from an RV park. We call ahead and make sure they know what type of rig we have and we're very carefull to be good RV stewards by trying to not put our tires where they don't belong! 🤔😂🤣😊
You are so cool man…. All show and no fire wood. Do you actually have time to go camping? Do you know what camping is?

I love the look of the little microwave. What is it and what to you think about it? Is it worth while? I am in Oregon and to my knowledge no extra license required for large RV's but I am a believer that there should be. Too many people with large RV's that do not know how to drive them. My current combined length is 61 feet with generator rack.
We use the microwave in the truck nearly every time we travel which is weekly. It's a great appliance for heating up lunch and has served us well for 9 years.
@@bigtruckbigtravels Do you know the make and model? I have been looking for one for a year.
@@SkylinersYeti it's a Walmart special...cheapest we could find. Rival brand 700 watt microwave. Fits great, works good for heating stuff up.
@@bigtruckbigtravels Thanks, it is hard to find compact a microwave
I’m just curious on what you thought of your previous fifth wheel compared to the spacecraft and what are your thoughts on the Mor/ryde is ?
Ar the beginning of the video -- what were you going to say that you thought was going to trigger the "haters"?
@@bigtruckbigtravels Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate it.
It makes me think about doing the same.
why use grease on 5th wheel why not teflon plate
Great question, Ted. I tried on day 1 but the tolerances are so tight between the pin and the hitch plate that a 1/8" teflon plate prevents the jaws from locking! Grrrr...so grease it is.
You didn't mention the engine in voyager and transmission
How could I have missed that?!? It's a D13 with a 12 speed i-Shift auto transmission. 500 hp and 1700 ft lbs of torque in an XE package.
A persneeds a Scania with a V8 and 770HP for as extreme HDT hauler.
That would do it!
Hi, do you need to stop at the scales with this rig?
Hi and great question. No. Since it's titled as a private truck then we don't need to stop at weigh stations. We obey all truck speed limits and weight/size restrictions as posted but no weigh stations.
TO BAD YOU DIDN'T THINK ABOUT THAT AXLE WHEN YOU PURCHASED THE TRUCK YOU WOULD HAVE SAVED SOME BIG MONEY NICE SET UP
Yeah, we did... we wanted it but all our "friends and associates" who had trucks said..."awww, you don't need that!" We should have gone with our gut...
Where I live a tag axle I is not powered and can be lifted, In snow or any slippery surface, what is yours like?
It's just a "dead" tag axle for weight. No lift, no power...it just sits there!
how much is this setup here? all custom built
Definitely a lot of custom features even though the Volvo is "standard" except for all our options. All told, we were in it for about $170K but it's a 2016 truck so they are a little more now. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're along on the journey. 😁
@@bigtruckbigtravels loving the content, keep it coming. A video idea is A Day in the Life, including food, setups, etc.
@@bigtruckbigtravels
Thanks for sharing that info!
Is the 60 gallon black/gray tank vented?
Yes. It is vented as is the fresh tank. Great question. Thanks.
It's so special that you don't use the fridge inside the cabin of the truck What a BS mate having lunch inside the truck
Yes. Very different from Texas. We moved from SC before we got the truck and fulltimed.
@@bigtruckbigtravels I've noticed your Clemson Tigers shirt. GO TIGERS!
Why did you pick a Volvo. Just wondering.
That would be super cool! Add regenerative brakes and a wind turbine incorporated into the grill or roof. Now we're talking! I like it!
So if you are out of Texas why is the truck & trailer licensed in Montane
Great question, Christian- We have Montana plates to simplify our insurance situation as we do presentations at HDT rallies on a volunteer basis (from time to time) as well as our "normal retirement" travel tours. Since we fulltime in our RV (no stick and brick) then it's important to make that distinction as we have no "physical" homebase as such. Appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching the channel. 😊😎
Wow. All it takes is money.
Hey, Brad. Money helps but you also need vision, planning and a desire to make the changes to see it through to fruition. We really enjoy boondocking and this helps us achieve our goal and easier so we don't have to move the whole rig to dump and fill. Thanks for the comment. 😃
@@bigtruckbigtravels Please know I meant no disrespect with my money comment. I say this all the time, in a joking way, about things on my dream list. I totally love your set-up. Happy travels.

Ok, that's a new one.
You both are married to one another correct? Don't mean to sound bad just curious?
😆 yes, the last time I checked, we were married to each other! Thanks for watching.
It's cool to see married couples who genuinely love each other like you two due, society today most marriages don't last long. The fact that you both live in smaller spaces yet very much enjoy your times together and don't argue like cats and dogs is truly amazing. I have really enjoyed subscribing to your channel.
Put A APU on the truck
I'm thinking about it... trying to figure out a way without giving up too much storage...or dollars! Thanks
Just a fleet truck
Basically, you are correct, Kenneth. But it has been modified to be a great fulltime truck...and might I say, most "fleet" drivers would love to drive it. Thanks for the comment.
THAT'S A BIG PROBLEM AS A RETIRED TRUCK DRIVER OF 48YRS EVERY ONE WITH A RIG LIKE YOURS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO TAKE CLASS A TEST BEFORE PURCHASING A RIG
Agree. There's a lot of people out there that shouldn't be driving these set ups.
