How I got PAID on MATERNITY LEAVE as a California Tech Worker 💻

- Today I'm sharing my personal experience with how I got paid on maternity leave while working at a tech company in San Francisco in 2020. If you work in sales, I go into how base and commission worked while I was out on leave. I've since worked with several clients on maximizing their maternity leave.

How much maternity leave did you take?
This was very helpful ❤
So are you allowed to receive an sdi check and UNUM check as well?
Yes I received both simultaneously
Hi Ashley! Just found your channel- and excited to learn more. I’m a new South Bay Area worker and we’re TTC. Good call on checking employers 1 yr policy. As a mgr myself, navigating a new system- I admit I learn every time I walk a team member through this and agree that HR & a leave absence team is helpful.
Cool, thanks for the thoughtful feedback! Good luck with your TTC journey! Happy to have you in our Discord if you're interested
This is so informative, thanks for doing all the research so that we don’t have to :) also always love hearing your mat leave story & how the timing worked out so well!
Thank you, loyal viewer!
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Thank you for this information. So to clarify further, does it mean you should not apply for SDI earlier than 4 weeks?
Hi Claire, thanks for watching! I recommend applying for SDI the first day that you start your maternity leave. Let me know if you have a more specific question! askashleyyang at gmail
@@AshleyYang thank you very much.
Thank you so much for making these videos! My company also offers 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. If I understand correctly, I can have up to 22 (6 from State and 16 from company) weeks of maternity leave after I gave birth - am I hearing that correctly? Assuming that I have a vaginal birth.
Hi Helen, it is likely that your company's maternity leave needs to include the 6 weeks from the State. I can do a full review for you if you reach out at askashleyyang at gmail thanks!
If u take the 4 weeks prior and SDI pay kicks in, does that eat into your available SDI funds after birth….? Like would that take out from what you have for the 6-8 weeks post partum and can you run into the chance that you might exhaust SDI funds sooner than if you didn’t take the 4 weeks off prior to birth?
Hi Wren, great question. Taking 4 weeks before does NOT eat into your SDI allotted weeks (it's more about the # of weeks than funds). Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this!! Unfortunately my employer doesn’t offer any paid maternity leave but I can get the unemployment benefits.
You're welcome! Ugh I'm sorry to hear that but I hope you find ways to get the rest and recovery you need before going back to work.
Hi, I am just wondering if I can I work part time while on short term disability due to pregnancy? Thank you!
I believe SDI requires you to be completely off work.
How often did you get paid through SDI?? Was is it every 2 weeks or was it every week??
I got a check every 2 weeks
Thank you for this, very helpful indeed! I was wondering when did you file your Disability Insurance claim? Did you file it before you gave birth?
Hi Cindy, I filed it a few weeks after I gave birth because things were so hectic! You can definitely backdate it. Thanks for watching!
Was the $3342 from state, is that the total amount paid by the state? As in the EDD? Sorry I’m so confused
Yes this was paid by the state, EDD.
So the pfl you took it after the maternity leave? Thank you still so confused
According to my company's leave policy, PFL ran concurrently with my maternity leave. In other words, my company paid the rest after PFL in order to reach my 100% base salary. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Im currently on SDI for pregnancy disability, when I deliver my baby I will technically still be on SDI payments or will it automatically transfer to PFL? Or is PFL what you take once you recovered from birth like after the 6 or 8 weeks? This is all new and I’m just trying to get a better sense of it. Thank you!
Hi Gloria, my understanding is SDI lasts 6 weeks (natural birth) or 8 weeks (C-section) from the day you give birth and PFL will start after that, you need to file a separate claim for it! Hope that helps.
I need help with this. I’m still confused how this works. I am currently 5mos pregnant and 5months employed only. February is my due month but I’m not employed for a year by then so what are my options? I know I won’t be able to get FMLa
Great info! Thank you!
You're welcome! Are you expecting soon?
So can your work party time during your 4 week disability before the birth?
I think you can but I'm not 100% sure, best to check with your employer.
How many hours do you need to work to qualify??
Our company policy was that you had to work 30 hours to qualify. Hope that helps!
