Thanks! I dove into the specs on the Dell ones like the 7010 and 9020's last year when I bought a few used. I didn't end up liking them as much as the HPs, so I've stuck with these for now.
@@ntgm20 very much agree on the preference towards HP, the pro/elite desk models with the black and silver design are my favourite of the corporate target devices and to me a very clean take on design. This video also helped a lot in understanding the naming conventions of hp hope to maybe see the mini series as those are about as adorable as the little pcs get Great content!
Great video, thanks for spelling it all out! Bought a elitedesk 800 g4 a little bit blindly, needed the two 3.5 bays for a NAS/jellyfin server. It works great with the UHD 630! Great transcoding capabilities.
Glad that you reviewing the SFF variant, since STH already reviewing Tiny Mini Micro, and many other youtuber review the standard "MT" tower. Also those overview table is to the point and easy to understand, and maybe you can make each line alternate color so it's easier to identify. Great job as usual!
Thanks! I really have liked the SFF for general computing. The mini's are too loud for me, though these do sound like jet engines when worked hard. I hadn't thought about alternating colors, not a bad idea. Thank you again!
@@ntgm20 I still have HP 800 G1 SFF, already maxed out with 4790 and 32GB of RAM, and also put GTX 1650 LP and NVMe adapter on bottom slot. performance is quite good, and like you said, the fan is pretty noisy so I swapped it out with my spare deepcool PWM fan. Now that system is decommissioned as living room PC and serve as Router. Feels like SFF is like an step child by PC community despite the prefect expansion capability despite the tight space. (PS. I want to see you put the more modern SFF like the G4 machine with Quadro RTX A2000 and see how it's perform :D )
Adding a RTX A2000 would be really cool, but I don't know if I would have the return on investment. If only I was a gamer... For the fans, I'm going to look and see how replacing the CPU fan will help any. I did it with an i7-6700 in a G2 SFF, and it was very impressive, especially at idle.
@@ntgm20 RTX A2000 is amazing for home server, you can load multiple 4K transcoding at the same time for Plex/Jellyfin server and also can run AI face recognition in Nextcloud photo gallery (just like google photo), especially for the 12GB variant, and it's quite an space saving and power efficient too (75W at max load), so you can put it on 2U server or in one of SFF system as multimedia server, other alternative if you feel challenged enough (and for saving several bucks) will be Tesla T4 and it's derivative, both T4 and RTX A2000 is quite cheap nowadays in used market, even in 3rd world country where I live!
Thank you very much for the information; HP's official documentation is a little all over the place and not really well compiled. Been shopping for a new NAS for a while now, just made a purchase of a 800 G3 SFF for $70 in total as my new NAS(2 bay is good enough for me, for now), after watching your video and the decision of G3 rather than G4 saved me about $50.
Great video! I'm a big fan and user of old OEM machines. Had various machines, 8200, OptiPlex, Z440 and it's time to upgrade to something more modern. I went with the EliteDesk 800 G4 with an i5-8500 because it has more slots, more ports and less crammed inside. The differences are in the detail and you did a great job outlining them! Very important to know is that with the 8th series, the i5 now has 6 Cores, so it's a big upgrade over a 7th gen i5, so I would aim to get a 8th gen intel at the very least. I'm not sure if 9th gen is worth the premium yet...
I've been a fan of the Elitedesk 800 SFF since finding the G1. Great as a used OEM. Agreed I don't see the great draw of the 9th gen over 8th, but either is a great leap in front of the 6/7th gens.
@@ntgm20 6 cores instead of 4, yes, but no multithreading so just 6 threads instead of 8 on previous quad core chips. That said, you can upgrade that to the 8700 for 6 core 12 threads for just a bit extra, so that's the better price/performance upgrade :)
reading the final charts, it seems like for the 800 sff, the best option is G4, you get the massive improvements that came with 8th gen intel over previous generations, a second nvme slot, support for 2 3.5 drives and an extra 2.5 drive on top of that, plus you get usb 3.1 gen 2 for those 10 gigabit usb speeds
Gotta thank you bro, I purchased a Pro 600 G5 and upon watching your video had a hunch I needed a bigger size for an RTX A2000 so grabbed a Elite 800 G5 and it ought to be perfect, arriving in a couple of days and I can't wait!
Great video. Please make a follow up video about the Mini series as it it is incredibly confusing. Prodesk vs Elite Desk...Then series 700 versus 800 and the the generations! I don't understand how Hp would think this naming schemes make any sense lol. Anyways thanks for the video. Subbed!
Excellent video, narration and visuals especially the charts. Would really appreciate a similar video on the minis as none of the many I've seen so far present a true comparison. They could all learn and up their game by learning from this video. Thanks again. Regards
I think a video on the tiny ones would get a lot of hits, because of ServeTheHome's Project TinyMini Micro. I also think the SFF is way more useful. Thank you for this video!
Thanks! I started looking into it this morning. As I only have a few 800 mini's, there would be more data presented vs pictures, but it could go faster too.
These HP Pro/Elitedesks with Intel 8th gen processors can be build into a budget triple-A gaming PC with the addition of low profile RX 6400 or RTX A2000.
This video saved me getting scammed. Was looking at a Pro Desk G4 i5 8th series online and it was a good price. I was able to see by your detailed photos of the back that it was actually a G3 7th series and worth a lot less than what they priced it at. Thank you!
I'm so glad that it helped! I've seen listings like that, and have myself not understood the differences that sellers may not disclose or maybe not know themselves.
Thanks for this. Exactly what I've been looking for. My (I5-3570, 16gb RAM) EliteDesk 8300 SFF has just decided to power off shortly after boot, and continues to do so. So now I'm looking for a suitable replacement. I'd like to try windows 11 out but, I'm a Linux user. I had thought the EliteDesk 800 G5 would be the best choice, But a ProDesk model might be more than good enough.
Thanks! Yes, the difference with size or ports with the Prodesk 600 or Elitedesk 800 is really just a preference. Real thing is which can you find at the best price? Sometimes the 800's go for cheaper, but that is subject to change of course. As a Linux user, do any of the Windows or Linux benchmarks translate well for your situation? Alas, it is sad to hear of the passing of your 8300 SFF.
@@ntgm20 Never done any before. In fact, I've never really thought about the benchmarking. I don't know too much about them. I just look at the number of cores, number of threads, L3 cache, and base clock speed. And if the CPU doesn't have too high a TDP. The sweet spot for me is 95w or less. I've seen a few Core i5's with a TDP of 65w even with decent L3 cache. Maybe I'm still a novice, but that's what matters to me. Of course advice from anyone who knows more than me, is always welcome. 👍
@@Avigazed The benchmarks I do are really just to show the difference between systems. Those are subject though to error, so raw numbers still have to be averaged with similar systems. Reality is if a machine does what you need it to and you are happy with it then everything is good. From your 8300 if you get a 8th or 9th gen i3 you'd see a big difference. I'd go with an i5 or i7, and if not running dedicated graphics then try for a 9th gen as there are better encode/decode support for video.
I always recommend ex lease HP Elitedesks to people. My lad bought a Elitedesk 800 g3, and have just got an 500w power supply. As hp did a 240w and 500w option. He wants to run a better graphics card. Great comparison video.
Thanks! The Elitedesk 800 G4 tower I have came with the 240w power supply, and I've been looking for a well priced 500w to go in. I have an i7-8700k that I want to see how well that pairs with it and CPU workloads, and if I can get it as quiet as my Dell XPS was.
@@ntgm20 HP did a version of the tower with an from the Tech Specs: " NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB FH PCIe x16 (requires 500 W chassis and 500 W PSU and will be available after launch)" I did some searching and found a thread with this part number : "For reference, here is the partnumber to the PSU: Partnumber 913290-001 Description GNRC, PSU 500W, 90% EFF,800 TWR" , Also found a local auction wite with this part number for the 500w supply: 901759-003. We havn't fitted it planning to do in the weekend.
Great vid, only spotted after getting the EliteDesk G4 800 i7 8700, and just waiting delivery of a EliteDesk G5 800 i9 9900. Was going to do the usual 'build one up' and spotted these, they really are a great unit, such a well thought out frame assy, no screwdriver needed for anything, well, just a small one to crimp up the NMVe sticks, but it seems your prices in the US are almost give away, a bit more pricey here, but still well worth it. Keep up the good work. My only worry is 'spares', the power supply especially.
Thanks! They are very interesting designs for sure, after using custom builds for a long time. I think you will still be able to find spare power supplies that are the most common configuration.
I just ordered an EliteDesk 800 G3 with an i3-7100. I plan to use it as a Homeserver. I liked this video very much. Now I know in what family tree I married into.
That does suck. I think any that I've had to reset (going back to the G2 maybe) had a jumper. Nothing else special you can do, like unhook battery, power on, drink a coke, stand on your head, and enter 5555 14 times in 9 seconds?
Ordered an Elite desk 800 G4 with i5 8500, 32gb RAM and 512gb SSD with Windows 10 Pro for $177 a couple of days ago off Amazon. Plenty good for non gaming tasks and a nice form factor. Good overview of the three HP models.
@@ntgm20 hi i watched your vids and i got the 400 g6 sff, and also a mini, but i cant get 4k 60 option resolution to my 4k tv from the display port with a hdmi adapter, could you tell me have you ever conected a tv in 4k 60, if so how?? thanks
Thank you for making this video because I keep getting confused by the models and thank you for mentioning how some of these are upgradable with how available barebones kits are on eBay for $40 for a chassis, CPU fan, hard disk caddy and no power adapter. This is a better route for me because $80 for an i7 CPU, the 65w power adapter then dealing with a few of these systems I've got spare RAM and M.2's which I kinda stressed about realizing I'd have leftovers but I plan on doing multiple builds for projects. My HP Elitedesk 800 G3 with 16GB of RAM and a cheap M.2 is a perfect Linux desktop for me. I got tired of SBCs like RPIs because of the CPU/upgrade/availability limitations. I'm thinking a Prodesk for a backup/Zoneminder server and another maxed out for a virtualization server to host a VPN, remote desktop, home automation, testing, etc. type stuff
I'm assuming you mean the 800 G3. I went back and looked, HP does list 4. Since making the video I've purchased 3 800 G3 SFF machines, and they only have 3, but have the spots for a 4th one. Maybe it was a special order thing and then the MB could have had all four connectors. Thanks for pointing it out.
I am watching this video on a HP ProDesk 600 G3 with i5/6500 I got at a cheap price from Ebay. I think these HP machines are still good for most needs if you're not into gaming.
@@capostrength3908 The issue with these machines and gaming is going to be GPU related, at least for most games. If the Intel internal GPU is okay in game reviews for that title, then these would be okay.
@@ntgm20 yeah good thing about these machines is that they are extremely versatile and upgradable. From what I read, the gpu can be swapped out and the motherboard can handle it.
@@capostrength3908 Another thing to be considered is the small case. A beefy graphics card would not fit. And the integrated Intel HD530 or the like is OK for office work and for Video streaming upto 1080p. Certainly not good enough for gaming in higher resolutions. Simple solitaire games and Super Tux Cart we're fine for me.
Great Video , how safe would it be to run Win 11 on these since they dont meet the requirements? Every thing still run good ? Wanted to set up one of these for my son but would prefer Window 11 so it would last a while. Thanks !
Thanks! Any running the 8th gen Intel Core processors are supported by and run Windows 11 without issue. For the 7th and 6th gen, it is not supported but I've read good results running with 4 cores at least.
They use USB2 because USB3 can’t do live serial natively. The lightning port is a debugging and jtag port too, even though normal users don’t have the custom software and hardware to utilize it. Look up Apple Kanzi Cable.
Thanks. No, I've not measured them all. There is some difference between what you get too. I had three 800 G1's and they differed by 5 to 10 watts from idle to maxed. I think my 800 G4 pulls just over 10 at idle, but the 600 G4 I used pulled only 4 watts. That is crazy and something I've not been able to find even in some of the mini PCs.
Very helpful thanks very much, there are so many options for these SFF HP PC's! Managed to snag a HP Elitedesk 800 G5 for £175, so about 200 USD? Obviously there are plenty of cheaper options, but it's got a 9th Gen core i5, and the extra storage options and multiple PCIe slots make it a winner. Hopefully it won't consume too much power on idle, I'll be replacing an old HP Prodesk (the super small form 1litre jobs).
Very cool. From my limited experience, the idle power consumption could be very near or even less than the 1 liter minis. That depends though also on if you have multiple hard drives spinning all the time too.
Really good video - really helpful and clear. I have had a great wee Prodesk 400 g4 SFF, but unfortunately the motherboard has gone. Before I buy like for like, does any other 400/600 fit the same case?
Thanks! The 400 motherboard from a G5 or G6 may fit, I can't remember but I think the rear I/O is the same. A 600 wouldn't line up on the front with it's extra ports, not sure about the rear or internal mounting points.
@@ntgm20 many thanks for replying, really appreciated. I had an inkling that the 600 might be a stretch, but the 400 g5 or g6 gives me the m.2 option that I didn’t have (although I could have gone down the PCIE card to be fair), so might be worth a punt. 👍
I noticed that these systems don't have a heat sink on their PCH a.k.a. "south bridge"... I wonder how worm those chips are running? Should I be concerned, if I plan to move a lot of data over SATA/USB/Ethernet?
@@ntgm20 Thanks for the response! Would you mind checking what temperatures the PCH runs at during normal use and during file transfers over SATA to USB 3.0?
The slimline slot in the 800 G3 SFF isn't tall enough to accept the slimline Blu-ray drive out of an 800 G1 SFF. That was a shame since my G3 is our Plex server and it would have been nice to rip Blu-rays directly on it.
That is a bummer. Is it the drive height or the front bezel? Those can be removed, and I put a HP Blu-ray drive in my XPS machine and swapped the fronts to make it fit.
Hi, thanks for this great video ! This helped me decide to buy a Prodesk 600 G4 Sff. Now i'm thinking to upgrade it a bit, starting with psu. This is proving to be a bit difficult task as officialy there is only the 180w psu, but on ebay and amazon there are some psu, 310w, with the standards 2x 4 pin, a 7 pin and a bonus 6+2 pcie. This psu however come with 3 wires in the p2 connector (black, gray and green) and is supposed to be compatible with "ProDesk 280G3 600G3 400G5 G5 G6 SFF S01 Pav TG01". As do you know a lot of this machine and also have a lot of them/have access to a lot, could you try a psu with a p2 with only 3 wires on the prodesk 600 g4 sff ? 😀
Thanks. My guess is just a business model. These are business machines, so sometimes a company has different needs and can save a lot going with 400's, but others have the cash to splurge for the 800's.
Thanks. I hand not planned on it, but I might could dig up some information. No promises though, I have a lot of Mini PCs to get through and maybe the HP minis as well. Still could be useful after that though.
Would it be possible in HP EliteDesk/ProDesk to plug a 4 port NIC with a low profile into the PCIe port? I would like to install Opnsense on this. Thank you
Yes, it is possible. You just have to match the interface to what is available in that model. There are some x1 cards that can do two Gbps ports, but for a four port card you are probably looking at needing at least a x4 slot. If you go with the Elite Desk you could have multiple cards in there too. My first install of pfsense was on a Elite Desk 800 G2 with a second NIC.
@@ntgm20 Thank you for your help. Do you know if any of these SFF devices have a built-in card based on the Intel chipset? In the HP documentation, I checked that there are such models, but which models, because all the ones I saw were on Realtek
Thanks! I've seen from 9 to 20 watts at idle, depending on the efficiency of that board and the power supply. I have found different values for the same model with same part numbers. Top power draw of course depends on which processor is in there.
What is the cheapest HP mini computer with usbc DP Alt Mode, even better with 15W power delivery? I think thunderbolt would be pretty cool? Is the hard-to-reach and expensive additional board with a connector the only solution?
I don't know about the cheapest, that is always up to what you find. From what I've seen it looks like for the 800 minis in G4 or G5 are able to have the optional USB-C on the back with DP Alt, or Thunderbolt, but the specs list those separate. The G4 and G5 list the front USB-C as 10 Gbps and charging, but don't list if 10 or 15W specifically.
Thanks! The optional USB-C board for the back PNs are L07094-001& L25753-001 I believe, if a eBay listing I saw has it right. That is for the USB 3.1 Gen 2 card.
Would you have approximate dimensions of the Elitedesk 800 Gx? I'm looking at a G6 with a i7-10700 to replace on older NUC with a i5-6200. I'm also curious how these Elitedesks are with cooling and if they're fairly quiet?
Hello! The approximate dimensions on the 800 G4 SFF I have is 13 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 4 inches tall. The tower is 6 inches wide 14.5 inches deep and 15 inches tall. That is of course with the SFF model laying down and the tower standing up. Is the 800 G6 you are looking at a SFF or tower? As for how quiet they are depends on the fans and the workload. With no GPU, there are two fans, one in the power supply and the other on the CPU cooler. Unless working it hard (for me that was rendering video normally) the fans can be very quiet. On a 800 G2 I replaced the CPU fan with a Noctua NF-R8 redux-1800 PWM one and that really quieted it down at idle.
Thanks! Unfortunately no. The chipset to run the 8th & 9th gen processors are different from 6th & 7th gen. HP also doesn't support some things that would be doable with BIOS updates. That doesn't really fit their business model.
now i know the elite desk are wider than the prodesk, i have not seen them side by side since, until this video...i own the Prodesk 600 G5 running i5 9500, with a built in dedicated Nvidia RTX T1000 8GB GPU, is it plug and play if we are goin to upgrade lets say the Prodesk 600 G5 to i7 or i9?

Great computers if you want one for basic use. They are quiet, quick and perfect unless you want to game new titles or edit big videos. Thanks for the detailed research.
Wow, that is a good catch. The Prodesk SFF G4 and G5 do have a x4 slot. I don't know why I'd put 0. I think the aliens have made edits that I wasn't aware of.
I have an 800 G3 SFF. The only problem I face with these machines is even though they have a full sized PCIe slot, the slot itself is limited to 35W max output which significantly decreases the range of GPUs i can use on the machine. In addition, The power supply is limited to 180W supply which again makes it difficult to put a power intensive GPU on the run. For the moment the only 2 GPU's that run on these SFF machines are the GT 1030 and the GT 730 2GB variant. Other than these 2 issues the PC in itself is a really good machine for regular use.
Thanks for pointing that out. I can't recall if I saw that about only 35W max on the PCIe x16 slot, but in reality as an office PC and not a gamer or workstation it isn't that surprising.
Very instructive video. I'm trying to buid a cheap HTPC able to read and RIP 4K Bluray discs and read H265 videos. I still don't know what processor, bluray reader/ripper and HP PC to pick but it seems to be a good start. I'll probably watch this video several times. If anaybody can advise me, (s)he's warmly welcome.
I use Prodesk 600 g4 sff for coding and data stuff, just great machine for non gaming productivity tasks, fast boot up, silent and nice connectivity. Great machine, love it.
From the specs yes, it does support a M.2 card for wireless. That doesn't mean what you find used will have that card in place though. I'm not sure if any of the used ones I've bought have.
You can get WiFi via a thumb drive unit if the motherboard does not have it. It just plugs into one of the USB spots. Used one for years on an old system I built. It worked fine.
It wasn't terrible. Ended up choosing 600 G3 SFF over 400 G4 MT. Chassis is like 48$, 7100 for 19ish$, free leftover ssd, 4TB HDD for storage - 46$, 16GB RAM 28$. Should be fine for Plex, storage and random software/project to learn something new.
I recently picked up a HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Sff. 32GB Ram, i7-8700 CPU. I would like to upgrade the power supply and the GPU. I am thinking of putting a rx 6400 low profile in it, but I am not sure what power supply would fit. Any suggestions?
Very nice. I've had to piece my 800 G4 SFF together. As for a power supply, I wonder if any of the flex power supplies would fit. I don't have any currently to try.
It appears so. The documents that I used to create the video seem to have been moved by HP. After looking through the maintenance manual I see where there are still two 3.5" bays.
I don't know for certain, but don't remember seeing anything about it in the BIOS. That said, I have HP Z4's and those do mention bifurcation in the BIOS. That is what leads me to believe it is no, but I don't have a definitive answer.
The HP Elitedesk that support 4 dimm up to 128GB ddr4 memory never sold below USD 200 in Taiwan...even no processor and memory, they know this model is popular....damn it!!
Finally found a cheap af leftover-Elitedesk selling guy in town. I'm now also a proud owner of 3 Elitedesk 800 G3s i5 6500 2x4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD. With only a few more spending for comfort kind of upgrades, that was less than 100 bucks for a workstation, a living room media player \ petit station du gaming and also a spare Elitedesk. Could probably do some server nertwork kind of things in the meantime. V.1337 - I enjoy.
It seems possible, Thunderbolt 3 support was added to the Skylake processors (Intel Core 6th Gen). The system would need a PCIe x4 (or x8 or x16) slot to put one in.
I have an HP ProDesk 600 G5 SFF i7 9th gen. According to Linux dmidecode command, this PC supports up to 64GB RAM, however several websites say that it supports up to 128GB. I'm really not sure if it supports up to 64GB or 128GB. Do you know or have any way of knowing this?
I think the reason that the stated max RAM capacity is wrong is because 32GB DDR4 sticks didn't yet exist when the product was launched. But the 8th-11th gen CPUs support 128GB RAM. You might need to update the BIOS too.
Specs say it should have a 180W power supply, so I'd say no. You'd have to upgrade, maybe use a flex power supply, but it wouldn't have to be huge, you probably need no more than 300W.
My only problem with the ProDesk SFF G3,G4,G5 is that they cant physically install teh NVIDIA RTX A2000 (which basically performs to a 1660TI). Which is why a prefer the Pro and Elite SFF G1, and G2 with i7 4790 and 32GB of Crucial Balistik RAM. They are entertainment/gaming mini monsters.
Thanks. I've not actually tried installing it, as I'd read there were work around needed. 4C/8T on the likes of the 6th and 7th Gen i7 would still provide a nice experience under W11 for a few more years.
Great video. I needed exactly this to find a SFF that woukd hold 3 ssds. (Windows OS, Lunux OS, storage. I hate dual booting ia grub). I wish the Tiny / USFF pcs coukd fit 3 drives :-)
i got a used prodesk g5 sff with i7 8700 in 2020. forced it to use a gtx 1060 with a riser and additional psu. few months after the system crashed and won't enter windows. luckily, it was still in warranty. they said the cpu got faulty. yeah, that's the first time i hear such a cpu fault. it's working but it always got stuck in os startup. in windows or linux.
@@ntgm20 no. They said the cpu was replaced. No problems so far. And i never use the 1060 with it again. Fyi,the gpu was a used one too. And sometimes it crashes itself. I did install a new gpu. But, it only uses pcie power.
I guess that depends on what you are needing to do with it. Low profile and power stuff isn't as plentiful, but I've seen some videos on using low profile cards to game. I still just use CPU power for video editing.
Nice video thanks :) Going to try to buy a 600 G4 bare maybe one with os in, have 4 earlier HP SFF .. plain core2, (2) Core2quads and a Core I5-3470 am on now. Am still hazy on getting OS and files from hard drive to new one. Want ssd drives for any new computer and would like to have win 11 compatibility though I will likely try by buying a barebones with win 11. Am not unhappy with win10. I have never had a problem with an older system I have bought online.
Very cool! I hope you have found a good deal. I still operate computers with Windows 10 and 11. Both have their quirks, but overall with some of the new things I am bias to Window 11 now.
I wish I could get these for $40. In our country they are usually more like $400 lol, although I managed to get the MT version of prodesk 600 G5 for $130 usd, but that almost looked like a mistake in their pricing, as it has the pentium gold CPU, which is however not bad at all.
Ordered a 800 G3 with a i5 7500 yesterday to use as a NAS a bit more expensive where i live as it cost me a total of 135 Euro with shipping from UK to Sweden. Still cheaper than buying one here in Sweden as the G3 with the 6th gen i5 6500 proccesor goes for around 120-130 Euro and dosent support H.265 10bit transcoding.
I lived in the UK for two years and understand a little of the back and forth on prices between them and mainland Europe. While we could get something cheaper here they could easily run as much too.
That is what the specs from HP say. I've not found a 32GB stick that I've been willing to purchase to figure it out though. Currently mine is maxed out with 4 16GB sticks.

Thank you so much!
Really appreciated this video, was confused what the differences between the models were, now I understand. Thanks for this , spot on 🎉
Thanks for the HP EliteDesk tutorial! 😄I'm looking into buying one now, and this was really helpful!
Glad it helped. I hope it does fit okay. Let us know either way!
The best information I've been able to find. Not to mention., you do an excellent job of narration. Thank you
Been confused before this video, glad you made this vid! thanks
Thanks for your feedback. Glad it helped!
Great video. Very educative . Thanks. I love the g5 800 series.
They are up to the G9 now... it's ok I'm only 7 generations behind 🙂. Awesome video, Zig!
@@ntgm20 HP did a version of the tower with an from the Tech Specs: " NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB FH PCIe x16 (requires 500 W chassis and 500 W PSU and will be available after launch)" I did some searching and found a thread with this part number : "For reference, here is the partnumber to the PSU:

Very useful video, thanks for making it!
Thank you!
I just ordered an EliteDesk 800 G3 with an i3-7100. I plan to use it as a Homeserver. I liked this video very much. Now I know in what family tree I married into.
What sucks is getting one that the bios is locked and it doesn't use a jumper pin but a dedicated chip
That sounds like a pretty decent deal all put together. Thanks!
@@ntgm20 hi i watched your vids and i got the 400 g6 sff, and also a mini, but i cant get 4k 60 option resolution to my 4k tv from the display port with a hdmi adapter, could you tell me have you ever conected a tv in 4k 60, if so how?? thanks
Hi, could you give me the PC link please?
thanks for the comparison tables
I'm thinking a Prodesk for a backup/Zoneminder server and another maxed out for a virtualization server to host a VPN, remote desktop, home automation, testing, etc. type stuff
i really like these computers.. from their small size so extensive expansion to the (IMO) best color scheme, silver n black
I honestly think all the HP business line since they went to this modelling scheme look a lot better than their older ones.
The G3 has only three (3) SATA ports, thank you for your video.
Very nice! That is my thought too.
Is it laggy? I’m thinking about using it for light gaming

Thank you!
Such a shame apple just uses usb type c 2.0 on the I phone 15 whereas the prodesk 600 that came out 6 years ago uses usb type c 3.1 gen 1
I didn't realize they were going to do that when they switched over. Guess everyone transfers things over a wireless connection.
They did it because they can. If Iphone 16 come with box only no phone inside Apple fans would still buy it and say this is unprecedented.
They use USB2 because USB3 can’t do live serial natively. The lightning port is a debugging and jtag port too, even though normal users don’t have the custom software and hardware to utilize it. Look up Apple Kanzi Cable.
Hello, I have a question. Does the HP Elitedesk 800 G3 SSF have PCI Express 3 or 4?
Sorry for my Bad english, i come from Germany. 😅
The 800 G3 SFF will have PCIe Gen 3. Your English is better than some native speakers I know.
Thanks for the vid, did you measure the power consumption of these? Idle and under load
I guess it depends on what you mean by a lot and how often. I've moved a couple TB, but I've not bothered looking at the chip temps.
@@ntgm20 Thanks for the response! Would you mind checking what temperatures the PCH runs at during normal use and during file transfers over SATA to USB 3.0?
Thanks for the video!
Very useful, thanks.
@@ntgm20 It's actually both. I had both bezels off and they don't interchange.
One detail I did not catch concerning the 800 G3 or G4. Is the x16 slot next to the CPU or the PSU?
i bought one with the ssd included for 45usd. great machine.
Very nice! It is great to find deals like that.
Just bought a 700 series for home office and I think it was a great purchase.
Very cool. What processor is it running? From what I've seen the 700's are running AMD processors, but I know little to nothing about them.
amazing. why do manufacturers find it so difficult to differentiate their model ranges?
Thanks. My guess is just a business model. These are business machines, so sometimes a company has different needs and can save a lot going with 400's, but others have the cash to splurge for the 800's.
Thank you for the video, can you do a video on HP's SFF using the AMD cpu's?
@@arturkruszyna4741 It is possible. I don't recall on all of them, but I'm on my 800 G4 right now, and it is running a Intel I219-LM.
Great video, if you are able a power consumption value would be helpful.
Thanks! I've seen from 9 to 20 watts at idle, depending on the efficiency of that board and the power supply. I have found different values for the same model with same part numbers. Top power draw of course depends on which processor is in there.
How about HP Elite 800 G1 SFF?
@@ntgm20…do you have the parts number for the Thunderbolt I/O board? I haven’t found that number (yet).
BTW, I really like this series of videos.
Thanks! The optional USB-C board for the back PNs are L07094-001& L25753-001 I believe, if a eBay listing I saw has it right. That is for the USB 3.1 Gen 2 card.
@@ntgm20…thnx, used your info, and ordered one off eBay, works a treat on my EliteDesks 800’s.
G6 wouldn't be very quiet. but its SFF is good. can hear fan noise when heavy loading. other time just quiet.
This a fantastic video. since the 600 sff g3 MB has a LGA1151 Chipset can I upgrade to a 9th Gen CPU?
Thanks! Unfortunately no. The chipset to run the 8th & 9th gen processors are different from 6th & 7th gen. HP also doesn't support some things that would be doable with BIOS updates. That doesn't really fit their business model.
Very tempting!
Thanks. Which one?
now i know the elite desk are wider than the prodesk, i have not seen them side by side since, until this video...i own the Prodesk 600 G5 running i5 9500, with a built in dedicated Nvidia RTX T1000 8GB GPU, is it plug and play if we are goin to upgrade lets say the Prodesk 600 G5 to i7 or i9?

is there any known mod for adding a 3rd 3,5" HDD on the elitedesk 800 G3? trying to build a nas off of it and raid 5 or z2 seems interesting
no way.
NAS can use G4, two M2 SSD slots and one SATA SSD slot.
It seems the prodesk 600g4 and g5 also have pcie x4 slot, are they functioning? In the comparison chart, it says they don't have these slots

Looks like a great use for one. Yes, it is amazing how quickly these can boot compared to hardware just a few years older.

That silver-coloured part on these computers, is it metal or just spray painted plastic?:)
Just plastic. It is part of the front bezel that can come off and then there is metal behind it.
For the prodesk 600 g3 does it have wireless wifi connection
From the specs yes, it does support a M.2 card for wireless. That doesn't mean what you find used will have that card in place though. I'm not sure if any of the used ones I've bought have.
You can get WiFi via a thumb drive unit if the motherboard does not have it. It just plugs into one of the USB spots. Used one for years on an old system I built. It worked fine.
Thank you!

The 800 G5 SFF should be able to install two 3.5-inch drives according to the official maintenance manual
It appears so. The documents that I used to create the video seem to have been moved by HP. After looking through the maintenance manual I see where there are still two 3.5" bays.

They, along with the 800 g3 do not. Instead they support 6th and 7th gen.
Any chance anyone knows if the 600 allows for bifurcation of the PCIe x16 slot?
I don't know for certain, but don't remember seeing anything about it in the BIOS. That said, I have HP Z4's and those do mention bifurcation in the BIOS. That is what leads me to believe it is no, but I don't have a definitive answer.

The ones that I have purchased and shown in the video have all worked, though there may have been something missing like RAM or a drive for the OS.
Sounds like a great deal! Not a bad way to start any of those projects for sure.
is it possible to install a Thunderbolt 3 card on EliteDesk ?
It seems possible, Thunderbolt 3 support was added to the Skylake processors (Intel Core 6th Gen). The system would need a PCIe x4 (or x8 or x16) slot to put one in.
@@ntgm20 Thank you. Do you recommand any ?
@@mialarssen2627 I can not, I've not tested any.
@@ntgm20 Thank you :)
According to HP it should support 128GB of RAM. I don't have a 32GB stick of RAM to test that out though.
I think the reason that the stated max RAM capacity is wrong is because 32GB DDR4 sticks didn't yet exist when the product was launched. But the 8th-11th gen CPUs support 128GB RAM. You might need to update the BIOS too.
Anybody know how large HDD are supported? Would 16tb be problematic? Thanks
Not entirely certain, but I've had luck putting in 6 and 8 TB drives.
Can the 600 g5 be used with a i7 9700 and a rtx a2000 without bursting into flames?
Specs say it should have a 180W power supply, so I'd say no. You'd have to upgrade, maybe use a flex power supply, but it wouldn't have to be huge, you probably need no more than 300W.
@@ntgm20 i dont think you can upgrade the power supplies in those computers since psu is oem
@@MysticSteve I think you should look at what @LowcastleTech has done with a flex PSU and OEM builds.
Prodesk 400 is a bit smaller for sure, and does create some issues like that.
6th gen i7 6700t does just fine on windows 11. No problem whatsoever installing. I guess similarly for lesser chips on 6th.
Thanks!
i got a used prodesk g5 sff with i7 8700 in 2020. forced it to use a gtx 1060 with a riser and additional psu. few months after the system crashed and won't enter windows. luckily, it was still in warranty. they said the cpu got faulty. yeah, that's the first time i hear such a cpu fault. it's working but it always got stuck in os startup. in windows or linux.
Very weird. CPUs can go bad, as can any component. Are you saying that even after they fixed the computer it still hangs?
@@ntgm20 no. They said the cpu was replaced. No problems so far. And i never use the 1060 with it again. Fyi,the gpu was a used one too. And sometimes it crashes itself.
I did install a new gpu. But, it only uses pcie power.
Very helpful
Glad to hear that!
I just want to know if they will run notepad, turbo notepad, or super duper double turbo notepad.
Notepad, yes. Notepad++, yes. Turbo notepad, super duper double turbo notepad, only if you dare.
What is the best GPU can i put Prodesk 600 G3 SFF with 180W?
I guess that depends on what you are needing to do with it. Low profile and power stuff isn't as plentiful, but I've seen some videos on using low profile cards to game. I still just use CPU power for video editing.
@@ntgm20 can i put HD7570 1gb ddr5 low profil on this pc with 180w?
My HP 800 with 9th gen i5 doesnt have NVMe slot.
That is so weird, it should have two.
Wow. Anything that is official supported by Windows 11 will pull a premium against those that cannot officially support it.
Are you sure about the 800g4 only supporting 64GB? I think it's 128GB.
That is what the specs from HP say. I've not found a 32GB stick that I've been willing to purchase to figure it out though. Currently mine is maxed out with 4 16GB sticks.
