The New Mobapad M6 HD for Nintendo Switch - Hall Sticks, Real HD Rumble, NFC, Gyro & Back Buttons

  • This is the second generation Mobapad Gemini JoyCon replacements for Nintendo Switch, and they are by far the best JoyCon replacement option available on the market.
    They feature all mechanical face buttons, great dpad, and shoulder buttons with a bit more travel than I’d prefer, but they’re still nice.
    They have remappable back buttons, and you're given a choice between a standard dpad or an Xbox style circle pad.
    They are the first of their kind to incorporate legitimate HD rumble, and they didn't skimp on the NFC. They have every single feature a JoyCon has sans the rarely used IR sensor.
    I forgot to mention that they come with an alternate set of magnetic face plates with octagonal gates. And, of course, they are using hall sensor sticks.

    Please read: I don't feel the same about these controllers 1 month later. They work great, but they don’t feel very comfortable for long gaming sessions if you have big hands like me. There needs to be more room for my pinky fingers. Just wanted to put that out there.
    Also, for those looking for a case that will work with the M6 you can order one here: a.aliexpress.com/_mNsayqO

      Is it at-least better than traditional Joy cons, I’ve been using the ones that come with the device and usually put my pinky under the console/controller for support but the back being flat makes it so uncomfortable, is this atleast an upgrade? I love the way it looks.

    • @OGTechNick
      @OGTechNick  5 місяців тому +4

      Definitely. It is still a massive upgrade over OEM JoyCon without a grip. I think JoyCon with a Skull & Co. or Satisfye grip is a more comfortable experience, but you're still left with the small thumbsticks in that case. The M6 is awesome. I just don't want to mislead people into thinking they're perfect now that I've had some time with them.

      I totally agree, the hyperion pro for me is more comfortable to hold. But the buttons on the m6 are awesome..would love a controller that was big like the hyperion with the same clicky buttons and hd rumble as the m6 hd.

    People were asking… “Does have turbo?” Yes. The same function button that you press for mapping is the button to initiate turbo. Just press and hold the the function button on the joycon and press the button you want turbo to be applied to (on the same JoyCon). The first press will initiate turbo on the button. Press them together again and it will put it on auto turbo. Press them a third time to turn turbo off. It works like most turbo buttons do.
    The same program button works for the back buttons. Just hold it down for a couple seconds until the light blinks, then press the button (or set of macros) and end it by clicking the back button. If I made that sound confusing please let me know.

      I think about 2-3 weeks. I have to say, as much as I love the HD rumble and mechanical switches, I’ve been enjoying the D9 with the Switch more. I don’t really think they belong in the same category but the D9 has been getting more use lately. My pinky fingers feel like something is missing on the Mobapad and it gets a little tiring after a while. I feel like they didn’t extend the sides down enough, and I think the reason for that is so it can still be dockable… That dock has been a major influence on so many dedicated Switch controllers/JoyCon replacements and always seems to hinder the ergonomics.

      If you have the correct screwdriver you can take Joy-Con connector apart and remove the handle part from the centre piece. I did this with the Nintendo Joy-Con Charging Grip after I got the Nyxi Hyperion Joy-Pads because their centre piece doesn't have a USB-C port to charge them.

    Best controller hands down. I just received it today and the product feels so premium. the ergonomics is the best for me. I have Nyxi Hyperion Pro, Crkd Nitrodeck, Binbok, Binbok Slim, and Hori Split pad pro. This is the best of all of them. The ergonomics is in between Binbok and Binbok slim with Nyxi Hyperion Pro and Nitrodeck joystick hall effects. It's got the best of both worlds. I'm buying a 2nd pair just in case they sell out. Their website doesn't look impressive so I do not know if this is a big company. I rather get a 2nd pair than find out they stop making them (I hope not)

    I am glad to see this video finally. I LOVE my Retroflag but the lack of data pass through and inability to dock kill it for me. I find myself having to take off the dock for data transfers and using the port to ‘dock’ into my covert dock. I was between this and the M6S and I think you’ve pushed me over.
    I will also add I have the v1 version so it doesn’t completely fit within the Retroflag deck. I use foam ear protectors to snugly fit it in place with no wobble.

  • @hbhavsi

    Great review, thank you so much! Do you have recommendations for a center grip for charging and playing in docked mode? I like the idea of Nyxi Hyperion Pro, but I've been reading and watching that these are better as controllers, but lack the center piece/grip.

    • @OGTechNick
      @OGTechNick  4 місяці тому

      It seems kinda hard to find them these days, but I took a few center charging pieces off of the older DOBE JoyCon charging grips, and they work well. Most of the other charging pieces sold alone have that "A" shape and wouldn't work very well IMHO. Nyxi now sells a center charging piece for their Wizard, and I've used it with the mobapad, but it looks a bit awkward and bulges out in the back. I hope Nyxi does the same thing for the Hyperion because a standard central charging rail is all the Mobapad really needs. If you can still find a DOBE charging grip, removing its central piece is my best suggestion though. If you do, keep in mind that the underside of the charging piece has a hole in the plastic. It can just be covered with tape or whatever you want. I used one of those adhesive rings from the $1 store designed to help with holding a cellphone. It works well and the ring even comes in handy from time to time.

    Definitely the best joycons, and i bought the cheaper M6s versions. But for the me, the 8bitdo Ultimate is still the best for having all the same features (minus amiibo), but with Full button/stick remappability, which the mobapad sortof has, but 8bitdo's can also invert stick axis. I did leave a comment with their customer support asking for that, and mobapad did say they're possibly working on it, along with pc controllers. I just hope it means its coming to their nintendo controllers too

    What center piece do you recommend to connect the controller as one? I usually play my switch as a single controller seperated from the screen. Great review

    • @OGTechNick
      @OGTechNick  5 місяців тому +1

      My best recommendation is to buy a cheap DOBE charging grip and remove its center piece. The other charging pieces are all “V shaped” and really mess with the ergonomics. If you have a set of Binkboks with the plain black center piece that’ll work too, but it’ll be a little wider than the piece on the DOBE grip and feels less comfortable as a full controller like that, not to mention it won’t charge and DOBE one will. I don’t think the battery life is great on the M6 and maybe that’s why they didn’t include their own center piece?
      If you do take my advice for the DOBE charging center piece, you’ll have to cover a square hole on the back of it with something after removing it from the original grip (I used one of those adhesive finger rings for a cell phone purchased at the $1 store)

Its nice to play on the couch or in bed. Sometimes handhelds actually feel more immersive than monitors/televisions. @OGTechNick are you able to run a turbo on auto on one side and then a macro on auto on the other side? I am looking to buy some joycons for use with a gpd win mini pc to play ARPGS like path of exile and diablo 4 and I want to try to run a movement turbo constantly with the left and then my attacks and flasks on the right side as a macro so I can theoretically just move the joystick around to do everything I need. It seems like either these or the Doyoki ones would be the only joycons that might be able to work for that purpose as they have the turbo/macro functions and work with pc/steam unlike the hyperions.
    Also do you know if there is any way to charge these without docking on the switch? Could the Doyoki charging middle grip work on them to add a usb c port?

    • @OGTechNick
      @OGTechNick  5 місяців тому +1

      Macros and auto turbo definitely work but I’ll try to figure out how to test that to confirm 100%. I’m pretty sure it’ll work as each side works independently.
      As far as charging goes, I bought a $5 DOBE charging grip and took the center charging rail off of the grip. It charges the M6 perfectly and serves as a full controller if you ever wanted to use it that way. I don’t know why they didn’t include a charging option, being that these can be used for things other than the Switch. It doesn’t seem too smart of them. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them release a central charging piece down the line, the same way NYXI did with the Wizard. I have that one as well but it’s not a good fit because it’s thick and sticks out in the back. The DOBE grip is a cheap and easy solution that works well.
      I’m juggling a few things here right now but I do have some other requests to test on the M6 HD, so I’ll get on it soon and try to cover it all.

      @@OGTechNick Thanks a ton for your super fast reply! I appreciate that you're willing to confirm my question but I also agree that it should work as they are independent.
      Another question in the macro realm if you don't mind also testing when you get around to it, is which buttons are actually able to be put into the macro? Is it only the face buttons and triggers or can you also macro the + - buttons too? I'm curious if you can remap the + and - if you're using these on pc and have them also be able to be included into a macro assigned to the back button. Not a huge deal but figured id ask since you might be testing some of these things in the future anyway.

I have tried SO many joycons and they all have huge flaws, I'm very excited to try these. My favorite that I've tried so far are the smaller Binbok ones with Hall Effect sticks (they're hard to find and not on the official website for some reason), but they dosconnect unexpectedly often and are generally poor quality. It's a bummer that you haven't tried the Hori Split Pad Compact, because they are the most comfortable for my slender hands, and I'm wondering how these compare. The thing about testing precise controllers with Ultra Street Fighter 2; is that game was made with the standard joycon in mind; which is made easier to pull off moves on a flawed joycon. As soon as you use a better controller, it is slightly off. You are better off testing the dpad with SF anniversary collection.

      @OGTechNick  5 місяців тому

      Aw man, that sucks. It makes me wonder if there is a quality control concern to be had. I’ve been feeling like my right side is vibrating lower than my left. Certain games make it more/less noticeable than others though. If you go to “find controllers” and click each one they should have a different frequency set for that feature and the right JoyCon has always been the lower frequency one for the “find controllers” vibration. If you haven’t already, please try testing that to see. If your right motor is stronger, I have a feeling they somehow programmed the right motor for the left, and the left one for the right.
      All that being said, certain games still do feel a bit “more off” for me with the lower intensity on the right side than it would in the exact same situation with an OEM (R) JoyCon.

And i just couldn't get on board with the squishy L1 & R1 buttons, and weird sharp ended flat L2 & R2 triggers which felt pretty awkward to use.
    Analog sticks are very nice, D-pad works great(But sounds awful. "click! click! click!"), it's not that comfortable(Hate the non-smooth backings and it's a bit bulky), and it includes HD Rumble & Gyro which are typically lacking from nearly every other alternative to Nintendo's own joy-con's, which is fantastic. But ultimately the loud and annoying mouse clicky buttons and lousy shoulder buttons did me in.

      I hear you. No pun intended. A lot of people hate the clicky buttons. I used to when I was in a situation where I had to be considerate of other people around me, but if that's not a factor, the mouse click sound doesn't bother me. After some time with them, I learned that they're not for me either. Mostly from an ergonomics standpoint. I have to be careful about the rose-colored glasses I'm subconsciously wearing during real unboxings. I might stick to official reviews instead. It will give me more time to test and form an accurate assessment in the end.

      That's another issue i was having as well, the ergonomics/form factor. It eventually gets tiresome to hold after a while due to the bulk and wider placement(s) and i don't like the rougher indentations/grip on each controller handle either. I ended up giving them to my niece, and she loved them at first. But just after a couple of weeks or so, she went back to using the Joy-Con's. :P
      New unboxings are always exciting, and can sometimes come with a bit of bias, obviously with the peeps who have been handed a free product and decide to shill it up, Money Talks after all. It's just refreshing hearing somebody else having some what of a similar negative opinion, because typically all i see is praise for the moba's.

      For example, the case that you originally bought for your Switch, in which you can put your Switch including the Joycons that are connected to the Switch. There is also an original case by nintendo. I don't think these controllers here shown in the videos would fit into it with the switch.@@OGTechNick

      @OGTechNick  6 місяців тому

      I understand. That’s true. These are way too big for a standard Nintendo Switch case. A lot of the 3rd party JoyCon offer an optional case and I have a couple from Binbok that are much bigger and work well. Mobapad sells a big case for their previous Gemini JoyCon so they’ll probably start selling cases for the M6 soon. Unfortunately it’ll probably be at least another $20.

    The click sounds from the buttons are too off putting. I would get it ASAP if they do a version that isn’t the “mechanical button” type. Also preferably a black or other dark colour scheme

    • @OGTechNick
      @OGTechNick  5 місяців тому +1

      I understand where you’re coming from. The button feel is a subjective one, but the more I use it the more I realize how much better a nice quality silicone membrane button press feels. As long as they’re not badly implemented and mushy I prefer rubber membranes better too. Also, I couldn’t agree with you more about the color. This controller is guaranteed to look filthy after heavy use by any normal person. I put thumbstick grips over the caps to protect the white sticks. I’d’ say I hope they release black faceplates in the future, but to be honest with you.. I’ve stopped using the M6 altogether. I’ve been using the D9 telescopic controller and I don’t care what anybody says about its looks. It’s the most comfortable way I’ve ever played my Switch portably. The buttons, sticks and dpad all feel so good. The rumble set to its lowest setting feels really nice too. Not HD but it’s comfortable.

      @@OGTechNickI did it and is impossible. I pull it very, very hard and it never moves a bit, nothing and I almost break it. I had to use a knife to pull it out. i can't really give a professional comments or give you proper advice but i will give you my two cents about videos, but almost 40 min video is quite long and i have no knowledge about your video editing skills or anything but i wouldn't mind if you had a shorter video where you make the gaming section about a 1 min long for each game and say your opinions how you felt about the product during that game on and short impression in general and then post these kind of videos where you have almost nonedited fotage where you fumble and ramble on. The shorter vidoes could be just short clips from the longer video where you did some simple voice overs or a totally different footage.

    • @OGTechNick
      @OGTechNick  6 місяців тому +1

      This is good advice, and was essentially my plan. Things have been busy around here and I haven’t allowed myself the time to learn video editing and I instead end up using that time making unfinished products videos and releasing them to the public. Probably a bad idea… I should’ve started with some editing knowledge. I’m going to find a balance and get that sorted out. It is going to limit the amount of content I release for a while but, you’re right. I know most people won’t want to sit through a 40 minute video. Time flies while I’m filming too. It always feels like 15 minutes until I see the clock. I like speaking naturally and unscripted so I lose track. I might have to make myself seem a little more generic like my successful competitors. I hope to find an enjoyable way to do these presentations without being too similar to the other channels posting the same type of content. There’s a lot more work involved in this hobby than I anticipated. I will likely take some time off in the new year to begin the process of learning to edit. I’m apprehensive to post anything else until then because I get similar comments to yours often, just not in such a kind and respectful way. I appreciate you. Thanks so much for your comments and I’m really glad you like my hat :) Have a happy new year!

      @@OGTechNick i don't think you should stop making these rambling type of videos at all because they are you but i think that shorter and more thought out video later where you could take feedback from these videos into account and answer questions. You could just title the longer videos something like "Spewing out my thoughts about (insert product here)" or "First impressions and opinions/ramblings about (insert product here)" and later make a proper review video where you have editing and more thought out game plan that are like 5-15 min long
