    Atlantis 6710 Monogram
    Digging deep into the tooling comes the classic Monogram Slingshot Dragster. This all plastic kit comes all molded in white, Does not have chrome parts or rubber tires a real classic. All new artwork created by Gene Chambers, Comes with 2 decal options for the Fireball or the Californian.
    The dragster is a specialized type of race car designed to cover a quarter mile drag strip in the shortest time possible and to reach the highest speed doing it. It is basically an engine mounted in a simple chassis. The weight of the engine and driver is centered, as much as possible, over the rear wheels for best traction. the rear tires are usually the extra wide, smooth "drag slicks". The front tires are usually the slim motorcycle type, mounted on spoke wheels for lightness. The Atlantis Fireball Dragster is a typical example of the cars used all over the country during the early to mid 1960's. The engine is a highly modified Chevrolet V-8 with a GMC supercharger.
    Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles or motorcycles compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance, most commonly 1⁄4 mi (1,320 ft; 402 m), with a shorter (1,000 ft (305 m)) distance becoming increasingly popular, as it has become the standard for Top Fuel dragsters and funny cars, where some major bracket races and other sanctioning bodies have adopted it as the standard. The 1⁄8 mi (660 ft; 201 m) is also popular in some circles. Electronic timing and speed sensing systems have been used to record race results since the 1960s.
    The history of automobiles and motorcycles being used for drag racing is nearly as long as the history of motorized vehicles themselves, and has taken the form of both illegal street racing and as a regulated motorsport.
    Drag racing started in the 1940s. World War II veterans were prominently involved, and some early drag races were done at decommissioned aircraft bases with landing strips that made them an ideal place for the sport. In 1951, Wally Parks formed the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).[1][2] The organization banned the use of nitromethane in 1957, calling it unsafe, in part through the efforts of C. J. Hart; the ban would be lifted in 1963.
    The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) oversees the majority of drag racing events in North America. The next largest organization is the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA). Nearly all drag strips are associated with one sanctioning body or the other.
    Besides NHRA and IHRA, there are niche organizations for muscle cars and nostalgia vehicles. The Nostalgia Drag Racing League (NDRL) based in Brownsburg, IN, runs a series of 1/4 mile (402 m) drag races in the Midwest for 1979 and older nostalgic appearing cars, with four classes of competition running in an index system. Pro 7.0 and Pro 7.50 run heads up 200 mile per hour (320 kilometre per hour) passes, while Pro Comp and Pro Gas run 8.0 to 10.0 indices. NDRL competition vehicles typically include Front Engine Dragsters, Altereds, Funny Cars, early Pro Stock clones, Super Stocks and Gassers.[11]
    The National Electric Drag Racing Association (NEDRA) races electric vehicles against high performance gasoline-powered vehicles such as Dodge Vipers or classic muscle cars in 1/4 and 1/8 mile (402 m & 201 m) races. The current electric drag racing record is [12] 6.940 seconds at 201.37 mph (324.0736 km/h) for a quarter mile (402 m). Another niche organization is the VWDRC which run a VW-only championship with vehicles running under 7 seconds.
    Prior to the founding of the NHRA and IHRA, smaller organizations sanctioned drag racing in the early years, which included the competing AHRA in the United States from 1955 to 2005.

    This would be a perfect kit to use some of the leftover parts from the Atlantis Mooneyes dragster kit. Looks very cool built straight from the box though.

    So many good memories here. BTW, I'm always amazed on how fast the spray paints cover the surfaces! I use only airbrush and it tales a lot more time for a complete coverage. Thanks for sharing, for the good moments and for the nice music too.

    On the first front wheel, you were careful and only got a little chrome paint on the tire. The second, off camera, was; eff it, get the chrome on, I'm gonna cover it with craft paint anyway. Great build Chris.

    Oh man - this may have been my first plastic car model back in the '50s - at 75 I can only remember what I haven't forgotten, but I'm pretty sure. It came molded in blue and gray. Mine ended up being testers glue colored as I used an entire tube. No decals on mine, just fingerprints. Pretty sure I was proud of it, though. I just ordered my second chance at building one - thanks to you and Model Roundup. BTW, I only ordered a half tube of glue, just to be safe this time! Nice build, Chris. Very nice.

    Hi Chris, knowing you enjoy hand painting as a zen moment for you. Thought it might have been easier when you were painting the front wheels, to paint them silver/chrome first then black the tyres? But hey what would I know you're building it 😊.

    Love that company's are reissuing these old kits. Ya it's not a highly detailed kit but still builds up to a good representation of a period dragster and as you are always pointing out build it your way you can always kit bash the heck out of it. Thanks Model Round Up for giving the opportunity to revisit my youth.

    Interesting. Easy build, this gives me some ideas for my scratch build rail dragster, using the Barris Dragula as an inspiration. I would get two of this kit. One to build as the Fireball dragster, the second for some parts to use on the scratch build.

      You are exactly right...I build military models and I just purchased a Sherman tank with workable tracks. What a nightmare and being 65 and no patience anymore I think my military building is over. I dont get why these companies are trying to outdo each other on the parts count.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  2 роки тому +2

      LOL, yes, the parts count just to show a high parts count is a bit tedious for me, but some of the builders out there love that stuff.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  2 роки тому +2

      I agree, I stick to the kits with vinyl tracks or snap link tracks, etc. There are a good amount out there.
      It would be excellent if the companies put band tracks in the kit as an option for those of us that don't want to spend four days assembling and pinning tracks.
