The 53 Studebaker was a beautiful car that came out in 1953. Its gorgeous styling by Raymond Loewy was well received and the car today is still beautiful. It was adopted for the drag strip to become a “Gasser”. The Gasser class allowed many different types of cars and the aerodynamic Studebaker was chosen by many drag strip car racers because of its shape. This Studebaker gasser is powered by a blown 392 Chrysler V-8, one of the most popular drag racing engines.
If you are not familiar with Jim Keeler a designer and engineer of custom parts for Revell in the Golden Age, Rick DelFavero, VP of Atlantis Models, states, "We are so excited to be working with Jim Keeler who has been such an influence in car modeling over the years! My Uncle had many of the Custom Car Parts sets and they always fascinated me. I was amazed at the many combinations and how you could arrive at your own original creation. I can't wait to see where we can take the series under the Atlantis name. Peter Vetri, President of Atlantis Models states in a recent press release, "We are so proud and honored to be working with Jim on producing a new Line of kits based on the old 1/25 Custom Car Parts. Look for many exciting kits to come from Atlantis Toy and Hobby

The Studebaker Champion is an automobile which was produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, from the beginning of the 1939 model year until 1958. It was a full-size car in its first three generations and a mid-size car in its fourth and fifth generation models, serving as the junior model to the Commander.
The success of the Champion in 1939 was imperative to Studebaker's survival following weak sales during the 1938 model year. Unlike most other cars, the Champion was designed from a "clean sheet" and had no restrictions caused by necessarily utilizing older parts or requiring the subsequent use of its components in heavier vehicles. Market research guided the selection of features, but a key principle adhered to was the engineering watchword "weight is the enemy". For its size, it was one of the lightest cars of its era. Its compact straight-six engine outlasted the model itself and was produced to the end of the 1964 model year, with a change to an OHV design in 1961.
The Champion was one of Studebaker's best-selling models because of its low price (US$660 for the 2-door business coupe in 1939, equal to $13,885 today), durable engine, and styling. The car's ponton styling was authored by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, who had been under contract with Studebaker for the design of their automobiles. Champions won Mobilgas economy runs by posting the highest fuel efficiency tests. During World War II, Champions were coveted for their high efficiency at a time when gas was rationed in the United States. From 1943 to 1945, the Champion engine was used as the powerplant for the Studebaker M29 Weasel personnel and cargo carrier, which also used four sets of the Champion's leaf springs arranged transversely for its bogie suspension.
The Champion was phased out in 1958 in preparation for the introduction of the 1959 Studebaker Lark. Prior to this, Studebaker had been placed under receivership, and the company was attempting to return to a profitable position.
In 1953, Studebaker was redesigned by Robert Bourke from Raymond Loewy's design studio ("the Loewy Coupe" or "Low Boy"). The 2-door coupe with a central pillar was called the Starlight, while the more expensive hardtop coupe was called the Starliner. In addition to the Loewy Coupe, there was also a 2-door sedan based on a shortened 4-door sedan. The 2-door sedan has a taller profile, and the back side windows in the 2-door sedans are noticeably bigger than the windows in the Loewy Coupe. The Loewy Coupe is substantially more collectible than the 2-door sedans. The front end of the new Champion was lower than contemporaries and shares an appearance with the Citroen DS.

The Studebaker brothers would be mighty impressed with this build. The boys started out making horse drawn wagons for the Army in the 1800's winning bids against the Conestoga Wagon Company. They finished up with cars like this. Thanks for this build, red on red is a tough combo, but you made it work, Chris.

what was updated? different decals & different color plastic, not particularly radical changes or did I miss something? oh, yeah, a second engine! but not an appropriate one. this is really a neat kit, I've built several over the years & will likely build more. but I'm not seeing a much changed kit. anyway,
kudos to Keeler for his part in bringing it back.

This kit was originally issued in 1965, as the Miss Deal funnycar. The story goes that Revell was tooling up a '53 Studebaker but AMT beat them to it! So they just modified the body into an altered wheelbase car and used some "PartsPack" parts. The chassis is actually the "Custom Show Car " frame, based on the early Corvette. The Pontiac engine is also from the PartsPack but was never included before.

Welp...im at the beginning point where hes assembling the engine in tbis vid....an its ironic....i was just building on an old hotrod revell two car kit pack from the 80s with mickey thompsons challenger bonnevill car and ivoes show boat...the engines in the challenger are pontiacs and i just noticed...
Its the same engine in this kit an mine.....so i was wondering how is an old revell engine in this kit here??? Weird

The kit is the former Revell Miss Deal model kit. With the Revell Parts Pack Pontiac engine thrown in at no extra charge. Keelers Kustoms refers to the guy who designed this kit for Revell in the early 60s. Along with the Mooneyes dragster kit introduced in 2022 and the Fiat Topolino altered kit, both of which Atlantis is producing to my delight. They're doing a very good job with these excellent old kits.
PS: While most everybody has always referred to this as a "gasser", as you pointed out, the wheelbase is modified from stock. Thus it, like the Fiat would've raced in "Altered" class. Funny Car class in the mid 60s required the body to be a factory body or a replica of a then new car which would not have allowed the 12 year old body on this car. Way back when I 1st got a Miss Deal kit, my plan was to combine parts from this kit and an AMT 53 Studebaker to build a drag Studebaker that would have fit the Gas class rules. Chopped roof, stock wheelbase, blown hemi, roll cage, etc. This kit is on my "to buy this year" list.

FWIW, this is the old Revell "Miss Deal" kit and is in no way a "Gasser". It has an altered wheel base and would be more of an Altered class car or early garage built funny car. Glad to see the Pontiac engine is there, so you can rob the Hemi from this for all the Atlantis dragster kits that should have that engine instead of a Cadillac, etc. lol!

This is very reminiscent of the 1970'S "Miss Deal" kit from Revell. It was sold as a funny car back then, but it had the same foot shaped push bar on the back and was modeled in white.

Revell did this with lots of engines in the early/mid 60s. The Tommy Ivo 4-engine dragster had 4 engines detailed like this. Gassrrs, dragster, altereds, parts pack engines, all kinds of stuff got this treatment. And while they look complex, they go together well.

Miss Deal was Revell. Yes this is the Miss Deal kit, now produced by Atlantis. Manufactured in the USA. The AMT 53 Studebaker built stock, or as a Bonneville racer with a chopped top.

Enjoy your builds and the reviews of what's in the box - I have to say I now base a lot of my purchases on what you've reviewed if it's a kit I haven't purchased before (which it seems I've purchased a lot over the years!) Sort of unrelated - what turntable are you using at the end?
