As a Giants fan, the 2014 final out will live rent free in my memory. From Mad Bum’s easy two outs, to Alex Gordon hitting the ball followed by an error by Juan Perez with that followed by by another error by Gregor Blanco, to Gordon being held up at third to Salvador Perez being the next at bat and the fear that followed, to Mad Bum remaining cool and finally Perez pops it up in foul territory leading to Pablo Sandoval’s easy catch. So many emotions in that final out. I always shed a tear when I see Buster Posey and Mad Bum celebrating the final out and Bruce Bochy, happy in the dugout caping off the Even Year Giants. Can’t believe it’s been ten years!!!!
I like to think that Rivera blowing game 7 of the '01 world series was notice from the Baseball Gods that it was a new century and that things were going to change. Because thematically, everything was pointing towards the Yankees winning - so for them to lose like that was an extremely ominous event. Lo and behold, the Yankees choke 4 straight postseasons, last and most brutally against the Red Sox, who break their 86-year curse - and what do you know, next year the White Sox break theirs. It's insane how much everything we thought we knew about baseball was turned on its head in 5 short years (I haven't even mentioned Moneyball yet lol).
Could be fun doing a “Death of Steinbrenner” where after years of unimaginable success, suddenly he loses it. After winning 3 titles in the final 5 years of the 90s, he’s facing leaving the 00s with only 1 more trophy to his name. This causes him great anguish, rapidly degenerating his health, but over time he learns about the importance of patience, of embracing people over winning. He gets his final championship in 2009 and dies less than a year later.
On 2003: I predicted at the time that if the Cubs and Red Sox had gotten to the World Series, the universe would have exploded with Game 7 tied in the bottom of the ninth, two outs, bases loaded, full count 😂
I can name the final batter and pitcher of every world series and the result of the at bat going back to 95. I should research more though. So this is a good video for me.
2012 vibe check should be higher. Miggy had won the triple crown that year and he had told Romo earlier that “I’ll be waiting for your slider” so Romo throws him a 90mph fastball down the middle of the plate.
I kinda figured Miggy’s exploits would reflect in the WAR total, but that is a badass story that I didn’t come across in my research. I was mostly looking for macro storylines/flourishes that were wholly apparent during the final out, but had I known about that exchange I definitely would’ve bumped it up a notch.
Great video, NMF. I like the methodology you use to justify your rankings. This is a topic that I didn’t even realize could be quantified, but you managed to do so haha
Fun fact: Yuli Gurriel appeared in the final out of 2 World Series, a World Baseball Classic final and an Olympics final, most likely the only player to ever do so. Only one of these championship moments was he on the winning end.
As someone who considers himself a final out of the World Series connoisseur I’m gonna have to disagree a little with your metrics approach (although it is much appreciated). Vibe check is high for me but also the plays aesthetic, so 2019 needs to be higher because it was an electric pitch and celebration and 2009 needs to be way down because it was awkward that Rivera was at first rather than on the mound and everyone starting going there anyway. I would change others too because the vibes are so strong!!! You just feel a good out and don’t feel the bad ones
I remember me and my dad watched Tucker catch the final out in the 2022 World Series and it didn’t feel real I guess… like I was trying to process that it actually happened, then he threw the remote across the room and cursed the astros….😂
Considering the heartache Braves fans endured for a quarter of a century it should be way higher. I had never noticed that with Dansby's last play, I thought he looked and moved on because the runner was going to beat the throw at 2nd but now I see he had a play at 2nd but wanted Freddie to catch the final out.
True, but I had to compare it to the heartbreak other teams felt during their droughts. Truth is, only 1 of 30 teams end the season at the top, and so many feel the same hurt even if it feels unique to them.
As a Rockies fan I’m completely disgusted with Jonathan Papelbon’s celebration in 2007. Yes, Boston won and yes, it was a sweep, but the way he was gloating (and probably taunting) the Rockies is unacceptable. It’s your second championship in 4 years. Now if it were 2004 I would understand, but his behavior made the entire Rockies franchise look bad, and the effects of it are still reverberating to this day. I firmly believe the Rockies are cursed because of that. They were never the same after that.
Yeah honestly I feel like I could’ve done this ranking differently. Maybe I could’ve given a penalty on outs that didn’t end the game. I might revisit this topic in a few years and do it for the last 50 WS with updated metrics.
That was the literal last out of that series, Luis Gonzalez hit a walk off single 1 batter after that out so yes that throw to third was the official last out of that series same with the other outs that were made right before a walk off
@@nomorefieldersThat's fair, but you're a beast! On further examination, they do appear lighter than I had first imagined, but still, I personally can't drum in anything with shape to it like that. @@Thndrstrike Interesting. I've always never been too particular about which shoes I dum in, but I can understand being thrown off by shoe with a curved bow. Honestly as long as the pedal is good, I can play in about anything besides sandals.
What hurricane Harvey did to Houston in some places still haven’t recovered from. I will fully admit that 17 is a meaningless ring with the cheating. But Houston had something to cheer for. A city that loves its baseball team finally got a ring. It is fucked but I still love it.
Manny Machado swinging and missing badly with his knee on the ground to the Red Sox in 2018 is the single best moment of karma in baseball history. I really hope he doesn't make the HOF, but I have a feeling the writers are going to forget about what a poor sport he was over the years in many, MANY instances, including the ending of Dustin Pedroia's career, who probably would have just recently retired instead of being on the ballot in January.
Royals fan here, Bumgarner gets way more praise for his one year w sf then I feel like a lot of other pitcher do when they realistically do something very similar. That is give a near superhuman performance that takes time off their career. I blame Joe Buck and that world series is why I can’t listen to him.
ranking a cheating 2017 team multiple teams above a 2020 that had to win the most games in a postseason up until that point is atrocious bro! astros should’ve actually been ranked dead last gotta unsubscribe for that one

A 27th out video that lasts exactly 27 minutes. Beautiful!
And there are 27 outs in a game
18:03 I feel unbelievably blueballed that I didn't even get to see the Joe Carter walk off, but I greatly appreciate the Devon White praise.
Urías delivering the final out also kills the vibes
in retrospect yes, but he was liked at the time

I can't wait to see where my team (The Mariners) will place on this list!
The 2008 Phillies win also broke a city wide curse and should have a higher vibe check

I wish you waited a bit longer! The final out in 2024 was pretty darn cool, in my opinion
I’m gonna throw 2024 in there and see where it ranks. Definitely giving it a much higher vibe check than 2020.

That's crazy. he was the final out for the Royals in the ALDS this year :(
That Devon White stat blew my mind. I had to hear it over 3 times just to comprehend it.
A extra tidbit for the 1997 series: White and Fernandez were teammates on the 1993 Blue Jays.
