Fellas I need help, What if the round is slamming into the breach of the barrel. Ive just ordered another magazine try but I am starting to worry something is off. Its like the bolt wants to push the round DOWNwards, but if I angle to cartridge UP in the magazine, he bolt doesnt catch the round as well and maybe 1 out of 5 will feed. Sometimes the LAST round in the magazine with work.
my lips are fine but i just got a bunch o 30 rounders and they are all finished with some kind of anodized coating or something. rough as a cats tongue. i disassembled and took a sheaf of 400 grit paper to the follower and the weld marks on the inside of the back. should be fine but i wont know till i get out there. nice vid and subbed.
I bought this tool and have noticed that I have smoother feeding if I make the front of the lips significantly wider than the rear. It allows the nose of the round to point upward while still in the magazine. I've noticed the follower of the magpul magazine makes the magpul mags feed the same way, allowing the nose to point upwards. Have you guys noticed the same thing?
It really depends on the action. The potential challenge to opening the front feed lips wider (with the nose of the round sitting up higher in the mag) is the bolt can skip over the base of the cartridge causing a feeding issue. But again depends on the action, cartridge, COAL, etc. As long as the feed lip tool has helped you fine tune your feeding, then it has accomplished its function!
As Masterpiece Arms says, "it depends on the action" but widening the lips at the front of the mag also cured my feed issue. In my Rem700, as the bolt progressed forward and the cartridge moved up the feed ramp it caused the case to pivot on the front of the magazine lips. This caused the back of the case to drop below the bolt. Widening the front feed lips prevented the case head from dropping down as much. Thanks for the tips guys!
I went a bit wider on the front for my rem 700 SA as well (before seeing your comment). Seems to have helped but time will tell. One of my goals this year is to get 2 bullets in the air at the same time to a 1200 yrd target (both hits) so that will be a good test….
$40+ "cheap" stamped steel 10-round magazines it doesn't cost $5 to make sold by a company that builds "accurate" rifles with a whopping "1.5 MOA accuracy guarantee" that all START at $4000 and you have to "adjust" the magazine to make them work in the rifle. There's a term for that kind of "adjustment" when its used to make an "adjustment" to something that shouldn't be bent and distorted in the first place. "Bend to fit, paint to match".
Which company are you talking about? MPAs start at $3200 and have a 3/8 MOA accuracy guarantee. AI rifles are pricey, but source barrels from Bartlein, Krieger, and other top makes. Accuracy guarantees mean shit.
Question : what do you do if the mag also has a plastic insert that rises to the top of the metal feeding lips. Plastic won't bend. With my Accurate Mags I had to file down the plastic to get the position that a cartridge should be to feed properly. That took awhile as I did a little filing at a time then back to the range to test it out. The second time I just took my file with me :)
Lol, every time I pick one of these up at a show or shop, I take my thumb and bend the lips down. Aics mags are disposable garbage, at a super premium price. Thank God for magpul!
Depending on the action and bolt head configuration, the feed lip opening should be between 0.385 and 0.420" Adjust as needed to optimize feeding and ejection
You sir are a life saver! Your tool and this video make this a simple job. I do also smooth the inside lower edge with some 400/ 600 wet sand paper.

Phil, any advice on running a polymer AICS mag? I thought about filing the mag lips.
Can i use the MAGPUL PMAG 5 7.62 AC magazine in the Masterpiece Arms MPA BA Rifle Chassis.

The only time I have ever seen feed lips that needs fixed, was after someone screwed with them.
